B&GCS Be Groovy 2009 Program

Transcript of B&GCS Be Groovy Program

Welcome...Dear Friends,

Thank you for joining us for our 50th Anniversary Celebration. We are proud to have served the children of Pinellas County for fifty years, producing graduates, preventing crime and developing leaders. Boys & Girls Clubs of the Suncoast offer safe havens for children throughout the county to learn, grow and build self esteem. Last year we were proud to have served over five thousand children in our 11 clubs throughout Pinellas County.

This evening we celebrate the many successes our youth have had over the years. We also celebrate the contributions of many community leaders, friends and supporters that have helped us reach our 50th Anniversary. This celebration is our time to say ‘thank-you’ and ‘job-well done’ to many, time to show support for the many yet to come, and a time to just “Be Groovy”.

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Suncoast’s mission is to inspire and enable all young people living in Pinellas County, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. With your help we can continue to meet this goal. We hope you will leave this evening inspired to make a difference and get involved, remember, It Just Takes One!

Please visit our website www.bgcsuncoast.org or call our Vice President of Resource Development, Carla Mattern at 727-524-2427, x 17 to learn more about the many ways you can help Boys & Girls Clubs serve the children of Pinellas County.

HONOREES

Honoring the Founding Family: The Nicklaus Family

Margaret “Peg” Nunn

We fondly remember this amazing woman with a great heart for children. Mrs. Nunn, or Peg as we called her, was our Founder. Her tremendous determination for excellence and her astounding focus on the etiquette of our society made her a stand out in the world of philanthropy. Among her many achievements are the opening of the Southside Boys Club; the opening of the Northside Boys Club, the merging of the Pinellas Park, and Suncoast Boys & Girls Club, our first gala; the Royal Theater grand opening; the Women’s Guild; and the Peg Nunn Scholarship that has awarded over $50,000 in college support to Boys & Girls Clubs youth attending colleges all over the world.

Peg to her credit never missed a Board meeting in forty-five years. She was remarkable. With her famous hats, her warm and gracious smile, and her supreme sense of style, Peg, was a treasure. Rest In Peace.

Lenne Nicklaus Ball

Mrs. Ball, Lenne as we call her, is the real definition of Legacy. Lenne’s mother, Beverly, and her Grandmother, Peg, established a way of life for their children and grandchildren that included an emphasis on giving back to the community. Lenne has carried the torch with much success. Tonight’s celebration is just one of her many contributions to Boys & Girls Clubs of the Suncoast. Her family’s resort, the great Sirata Beach Resort has hosted many Boys & Girls Club events. Several years ago our Girls Night Out party involving seven of our most troubled middle school girls, and their mentors, were given a suite at the Sirata for an overnight. One of the girls was so thrilled because she had never stayed overnight in a hotel. That girl has gone on to receive her PhD from the University of Florida in Psychology. That night at the Sirata proved to be her cornerstone inspiration. Lenne thanks.

Honoring the Sustaining Family: The Sokolowski Family

Robert “Bob” Sokolowski

Leader, Philanthropist, Educator, Dad, and Grand Dad, Mr. Sokolowski is the quintessential friend of youth. A stalwart for exceptional achievement, and excellence, Bob embraced our organization two decades ago. He has brought a strong sense of accountability, and vision to our mission. The Sokolowski Family, especially his lovely wife Claudia, has welcomed our children into their home many times with kindness, and hospitality that inspires children to succeed. Thanks to Bob we have sustained our organization with remarkable results. Always faithful Bob represents all that matters in the world of non profit leadership & philanthropy. His emphasis on Executive Leadership has transformed our organization. Truly Bob and the Sokolowski Family are our Heroes.

Did you know? During the school year, lower income children’s skills improve at close to the same rate as those of their more advantaged peers.

Over the summer, middle- and upper-income children’s skills continue to improve, while lower income children’s skills do not.

Summer learning shortfall experienced by low-income children over the elementary grades has consequences that reverberate throughout the children’s schooling, and can impact weather a child ultimately earns a high school diploma and continues on to college.

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Suncoast has launched an exciting new summer literacy program. The Boys & Girls Clubs Summer Reading Camp will encourage and inspire reading and learning to youth of all ages.

Reading Camp expenses will be approximately $1000 per student and we plan to raise scholarship funds to accommodate 200 of our most needy children. Our campaign theme is aptly named It Just Takes One: Book, Summer, Sponsor. $1000 will sponsor a child at the Boys & Girls Clubs Summer Reading Camp... please sponsor a child or two today!
