In March of 2014, even before I was officially at BGA, I began soliciting proposals for strategic plan consultants. Though I knew of Ian Symmonds by reputation, I had not spent much time in direct communication with him. From our first phone call, the fit was clear. His knowledge of the area, expertise in the field, and scope of the proposal were unparalleled, and by June of that year, he began to form a partnership with BGA that would help shape our plan. As a side note, SAIS (the group that accredits all independent schools in the Southeast) recently selected Ian to develop its strategic plan.

During the summer of 2014, a steering committee was formed and a research plan was set in place. A dedicated group of board members, parents, educators, and community leaders met with Ian monthly for discussions, thought exercises, and reports, culminating in a key findings report in November. This report represented all of the data collected and analyzed, the market research performed by Ian Symmonds & Associates, and countless interviews and listening sessions. From this report, the steering committee began to move toward five strategic initiatives.

Interestingly, the five strategic initiatives you see in our final plan are not the same as the ones the steering committee originally identified. Through a process of subcommittee workgroups and reporting out the results of those sessions, some of the initiatives were combined, and some were pulled out to stand on their own. The key to the entire process was transparent communication and a common, significant goal.

In May of this year, the plan was approved by the strategic plan committee and submitted to the full board. After many summer edits and small revisions, the plan was officially adopted at the August board retreat. As you will clearly see, this plan is the result of hard work, collaboration, shared vision, and a deep and abiding love for this school. I believe it sets a course for BGA that will sustain it for years to come, and the ripple effect of this plan will be felt long after all the goals are completed and another plan is underway.

Laying the Foundation for a Sustainable PathThis issue of echo focuses on our newly adopted Strategic Plan. Built on the premise that we want to both describe who we are and aspire to what we can become together, this plan offers an incredible amount of clarity and confidence about our direction as a school. In the pages that follow, you will see some of the exciting things to come, but, in this letter, I want to take the opportunity to describe to you something just as exciting: the process.

thoughtful, thorough, and collaborative planning. After countless interviews, committees, subcommittees, drafts, revisions, and finally, approval, the Board of Trustees has adopted a plan that understands who we are as a school both historically and in our current context.

It all begins with our mission.

WHAT WE DO

“To ignite and nurture student curiosity, intellect, and character.” Almost a variation on our core values, these qualities reflect the best of our students and puts the responsibility on us as a school to both inspire and to care for our students. We have a vision for what our work will accomplish.

WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO

“We believe in the transformative power of independent education.” I have heard one of my mentors eloquently encourage parents to give their children something that can never be taken from them, to give them an educational experience instead of things. One of our colleagues, Leigh Lambert, said it best when she said that to know her is to know that she went to BGA.

Strategy is a set of integrated choices that will define how you will achieve superior performance in the face of competition.

This definition clearly depicts what our planning process and product have tried to bring to fruition. The 2015 Strategic Plan provides a light to show us the way forward. It helps to create clarity of identity and purpose. It puts together in one place interconnected programs and approaches that will allow us as a school to achieve even greater results because the decisions of one area of the school will be better connected to the decisions of another.

One of the greatest challenges in a school is discouraging excellence. While that may sound strange, allow me to explain. We hope to achieve excellence as a school for the sake of our students in a broad array of experiences. We do not want excellence only in isolated areas. Therefore, the coach who wants students to practice to the point of neglecting other areas of life or the teacher who assigns so much work that other subjects get short shrift may both be pursuing excellence with the best intentions. In these scenarios, however, the excellence we want to achieve as a school is impeded. Certainly, students will concentrate their time in some areas more than others, but ultimately we want a student to reflect the entire BGA experience.

The challenge then becomes to define that experience – what is it? How do we get there? The answer is found in

So much is written every year about the concept of strategy, and when schools speak of strategy it can sound as if it such language doesn’t belong in an educational setting. During our administrative retreat this June, Ken Wempe and Rhonda Bennett, Heads of the Middle and Lower Schools, respectively, reminded me of a definition of “strategy” they encountered at a summer administrative workshop:

That is the indelible mark we speak of in the Portrait of the Graduate. That is why we are so passionate about educating young people. We believe that we can change lives and change the world with the work that we do here.

This vision exists in a context of core values that allow us to work together.

IDEALS WE LIVE BY

In some ways this portion of the strategic plan is the least original, and in some ways it is the most original (and important). “Character. Scholarship. Excellence.” as a tagline has existed for many years, but this plan seeks to define those for our context, our school today.

THE PLAN

What follows our mission, vision, and values is a set of integrated choices and objectives that we believe will lead us to superior performance as a school. Each pillar is critical and the result of a great deal of work and input, and I want to take a brief space to provide some commentary on each.

Articulate Our Unique Educational Philosophy BGA has a pretty good track record for educating young people for more than 125 years. We are not looking to start over but to define what we do well and blend it with what we believe to be best practice. We want our classrooms to be vibrant and alive with discussions and questions, real-world problem solving, and collaborative learning. We want to ensure that students are getting the most from their experiences here and are challenged and supported with equal measure.

Enhance Our Academic and Extracurricular Program Sections II and IV are direct responses to the work of our consultant with so many different constituencies. Improving areas like College Counseling support with greater staffing and resources, or ensuring that we have a full-fledged learning support program for any student in the school were just a few of the areas in which we needed to grow, and this plan provides a path for that growth.

Develop a Signature Entrepreneurial Leadership Program In many ways this program will be the biggest takeaway from the plan. It is tangibly different and new and exciting. We want this program to grow and take shape in the coming years, but we also want it to affect how we teach across the curriculum. We view our entrepreneurship as “applied liberal arts” – to steal a phrase from one of our parents – and thus a logical outgrowth of what we have done well for so long. The classes in this department are open to all students, and the Entrepreneurial Leader distinction will provide an outlet for our most interested students.

Connect to Our Greater Community Again, in our research we heard consistently that while we were a close-knit, warm community ourselves, we did not always connect with the broader community in Williamson County and beyond, one that has changed greatly in the last 10 years while we have remained more insulated.

Ensuring a Sustainable Future Call this the “put up or shut up” section of the plan. If our strategy is based on how our mission and our market intersect, these directives will help ensure that we are assessing our progress and the results of our plan. Do we have a compelling story to tell our families and prospective families about what BGA does for young people? Do we properly invest in the school so that it will be educating young people for another 125 years? These action steps hold us accountable to our expectations of stewardship and fiscal responsibility.

There you have it – a lamp to light the path of our future, a guide for our decision-making, clarity in our identity and purpose. I hope that you will take time to peruse this plan and ask questions as we go forward. We needed a great deal of your help to put this plan together, and we will need far more of your help and support to see this plan through to successful completion. u

BGA alumna Bethany Kirkpatrick ’15 has been named one of 150 nationwide Coca-Cola Scholars. She is the only Williamson County student and only one of five from Tennessee selected for this honor. Nearly 103,000 students applied. Bethany will receive a $20,000 scholarship to the school of her choice, Davidson College, and will travel to Atlanta in April of 2016 for Coca-Cola’s Scholars Weekend. The award recognizes high school seniors based on educational excellence, leadership, and service to school and community.

Grace Whitten ’16 performs one of three prepared poems at Tennessee’s Poetry Out Loud competition, where she was declared state champion; she also competed in the national competition in April at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Speech & Debate Finishes the Year StrongThe Speech & Debate Team ended the school year with many exciting accolades. Bethany Kirkpatrick ’15 set the BGA school points record in the National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA), which tracks the top 135,000 students in the United States in their point system. Her total places her in the top 0.35% of all students in the United States. Bethany earned the NSDA Quint Ruby Award and also became an Academic All-American.

Other outstanding achievements this year include four National Qualifiers, an All-State NSDA All-American, becoming the first high school in the country to defeat Team USA Debate, National circuit place winners, and BGA’s first round-robin invite in years. Harry Strong, BGA’s extraordinary coach in his first year here, began the tradition of awarding varsity letters, which were earned by four seniors, one junior, and one sophomore.

Please join us in giving them a Wildcat welcome! The Alyne Q. Massey Honors Scholarship was established by L.H. (Bill) Armistead III ’69, a member of BGA’s Board of Trustees, in memory of his mother. The scholarships provide partial tuition for high-achieving students with strong grades and Independent School Entrance Exam scores. “Mrs. Massey was a strong advocate of independent school education and a longtime supporter of Battle Ground Academy,” says Will Kesler, BGA Head of School. “Through these scholarships, Bill Armistead is giving kids opportunities they

might not otherwise have. This will be a lasting tribute to his mother’s memory.” Mrs. Massey, who passed away in 2012, was the widow of the late Jack C. Massey, a Nashville entrepreneur and businessman. She was a graduate of Vanderbilt University and served on its Board of Trustees for three decades. She was a co-founder of the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, a trustee at Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art, a former reporter for the Nashville Banner and head of the Women’s Division of Commerce Union Bank (now Bank of America). She was also a board member of the Blair House in Washington D.C., which is a temporary residence for foreign leaders. The Law Library at Vanderbilt University School of Law is named in her honor.


Why do you think this is a valuable opportunity for Tennessee’s high school students? GW: Since the program is free, we didn’t all come from the same financial background. Anyone can apply. Governor’s School gets kids who never thought college was an option for them interested in going, or at least interested in learning more.

Seniors Share Tennessee Governor’s Schools Experiences

What was the most surprising thing about your experience? GW: I think one of the most surprising things was how prepared I felt I was. The classes were really challenging, but I felt like I could do well. I think this is because of BGA and how well it’s prepared me for college.

What was your greatest accomplishment during the program? GW: We didn’t get awards, but we did get diplomas at the closing ceremony. It didn’t really sink in that Governor’s School was over until the first kid walked across the stage. All the students cheered for him like crazy, and that’s when it hit me that we had grown amazingly close in the time we spent together. When I walked across the stage, I got cheered for, too, and I think that’s my greatest accomplishment during the program. I became a part of that Governor’s School family, and gave as good as I got.

What did you learn about yourself during the program? GW: Above all else, I learned that I could definitely go into college. I was going to go to college anyway, because that’s just

what you do when you go to a high school such as BGA, but I wasn’t ever sure I’d be able to do well. After Governor’s School, I know that I can manage going to college and surviving, but more importantly probably, thriving.

What did you learn that you hope to share with the BGA community? GW: There was always this sense of urgency at Governor’s School to make the most of every day because we only had a certain number of them to spend together. This is my 13th year at BGA. With so many days spent here, there’s never been that acute sense of timing that was at Governor’s School. We too often think we have forever left here, when we really don’t. One of the most important things I can share with the BGA community is to bring to it some of that urgency; we need to find the best ways to enjoy our time on this campus and in this community.

Matthew Minor ’16 Governor’s School for International Studies University of Memphis

Why do you think this is a valuable opportunity for Tennessee’s high school students? MM: The Governor’s Schools, especially the school for international studies, give students an opportunity to study subjects that aren’t typically taught in schools. I wouldn’t have had the chance to study international relations, environmental politics, international political economy, or the Portuguese language if I hadn’t attended Governor’s School. It also gives students a chance to grow by living independently in a college setting; I know that I grew and matured tremendously because of it.

What was the most surprising thing about your experience? MM: I gained several new interests within the very broad discipline of international studies. We gave a mock policy brief to President Obama about the United States’ role in the nuclear negotiations with Iran, and the research we did from that project piqued my interest in nuclear nonproliferation policy. In Introduction to International Relations, I was fascinated by the intersection of politics and economics and how governments run economies. As we watched countries struggle to maintain sound economies and function within the global economy, we learned about the role of international organizations, such as the IMF and

World Bank, in building and supporting economic activities around the world. As I get ready to go to college, I’m so excited to see what opportunities lie ahead for me to pursue my new interests.

What was your greatest accomplishment during the program? MM: Most students come not knowing many people; going to Governor’s School really made me put myself out there, as I’ve gone to BGA my entire life and never really had to go out of my way to meet people. Now, I am completely comfortable going to a meeting or event where I may not know many people and introducing myself to strangers.

What did you learn about yourself during the program? MM: The most significant thing I learned is I do not have to have a path set in stone as to where I want to go. Governor’s School completely changed my notion of career building. We met with a Foreign Service officer, an official at the State Department, former Director of the CIA Counterterrorism Center Philip Mudd, and FBI agents. They all had taken different paths to their careers in the international arena, and our conversations showed me there is more than one path to accomplish my career goals.

What did you learn there that you hope to share with the BGA community? MM: It’s so important to be engaged citizens in the global community. We cannot afford to turn a blind eye to the world around us, whether that be ignoring developments in international politics or failing to recognize human rights violations across the globe. I hope to share the idea that global engagement is crucial to building and sustaining a just and harmonious global community. At BGA, I hope more students will be more involved in the global community, through exchange programs, building relationships with our international students, or becoming better versed in current events. There are so many opportunities at BGA, and I hope we all take advantage of them. u

Grit Day Still Going Strong After More Than 40 Years

Grit Day is still shaking up the routine at BGA; held each spring, Grit Day is a day in which both students and teachers dress in their most creative costumes for the honor of winning a bowl of cold grits, compliments of the Head of School. Students choose to dress up individually or plan themed costumes for a group. A Parade of Costumes in the Middle School Gym allows for an entertaining view of this unique spectacle. u

Started in 1971, Grit Day is a time-honored tradition at BGA. A 1972 BGA yearbook states the purpose of the newly minted tradition was to “give the students a holiday from the day to day routine of student life.”

Mary Campbell Easel Award Honors BGA Artists Past and PresentAlong with the gift of the Mary Campbell Visual Arts Center, Battle Ground Academy’s art department was fortunate enough to receive several pieces of furniture and equipment from Mary Campbell’s studio, including her easel. To honor Mary’s memory, it was decided that every quarter the visual art teachers would review the artwork of current students and choose a piece that exemplified the qualities students strive to achieve: creativity, effort, and quality. That piece would receive the Mary Campbell Easel Award and be displayed on her easel during the following quarter.

Lucy Evans ’18 was the proud recipient of the 2014-15 4th Quarter Mary Campbell Easel Award. This was Lucy’s first foray into linoleum printing, and her assignment was to incorporate visual texture into her print. Lucy began by photographing a porch from an unusual point of view, making an ordinary subject more appealing. She was interested in the element of visual texture created by the bead-board ceiling. After the initial print was completed, Lucy used watercolors to hand-tint the print, creating a realistic interpretation of light’s effect on the colors chosen. From composition and carving technique to the final coloring process, Lucy achieved impressive results with her attention to detail.

“The Mary Campbell Easel award is a wonderful way to honor both Mary Campbell and the talented young artists who work so hard in the Visual Arts Center each day,” says Alison Logan, BGA’s Fine Arts Coordinator. “We look forward to sharing and celebrating the work of many more emerging artists who will have their talent supported and broadened here at school.”

Andee Rudloff Creates Mural Alongside Art StudentsAndee Rudloff, artist and facilitator, worked for a week in March with the upper-level art students to create a large-scale mural that was hung in the Carol Lea-Mord Senior Studio. A video was made of the process that was shown at the opening reception when the mural was unveiled. Use the QR code at the right to watch the painting of the mural, start-to-finish in less than three minutes!

Upper School Retrospective Art ShowThe Upper School Retrospective Art Show is held in April every year and showcases the work of all current art students. During the reception, students work in the studios, giving guests a glimpse into the artistic process. Senior work is shown in the media room, and underclassmen art can be viewed in the halls of both floors, all while patrons enjoy refreshments and live music.

Middle and Upper School BandsThe 2014-2015 school year was filled with instrumental music of many genres from BGA’s Middle and Upper School students. The Middle School Concert Band made its premiere at Middle Tennessee State University in March for Concert Performance Assessment.

The Upper School Jazz/Rock Combo reveled with tunes from the Roaring ’20s, featuring music by jazz standards Duke Ellington and George Gershwin. After-school groups, Vanguard and Giant Steps, rocked out pop, country, and rock hits from multiple decades at multiple venues, including Nashville’s Soulshine Pizza, and for our own BGA audiences.

Middle and Upper School ChorusThe Middle School Chorus presented its annual Spring Concert, where in addition to performing music from around the globe, each grade level presented a class composition.

The Upper School Choirs presented “The Music of Tennessee” as their annual Spring Concert. In between the music of Elvis Presley, the Fisk Jubilee Singers, Johnny Cash, and Tennessee Ernie Ford, audience members were asked to come up on stage for a Tennessee trivia game.

Upper School Presents The Wedding Singer

Middle School Presents Bard High: Spring Break Edition

The Upper School musical, The Wedding Singer, was an entertaining blast from the past for the cast and audience alike. “The unbridled energy and enthusiasm of this talented young cast coupled with the musical expertise of Sarah Evins (Musical Director and Conductor) helped make this one of the most rewarding high school musical theatre experiences I have had,” said Jenny Noël, BGA’s Upper School Drama Director. “I also enjoyed the opportunity to introduce the students to all things eighties, including TAB, the original cell phones and Boy George.”

The Middle School spring play, Bard High: Spring Break Edition, is a modern retelling of the Shakespeare classic Much Ado About Nothing. The gifted 5th through 8th grade cast carried the audience through twists and turns in an amusing retelling of the classic play.

Price comes to BGA from Fellowship Christian School in Roswell, Ga., where he coached girls’ basketball, served as the Department Head of Social Sciences, and taught government, economics, and history for the past eight years. Previously, he served in similar positions with Athens Academy in Athens, Ga., Mt. Paran Christian School in Marietta, Ga., and Wilson Hall School in Sumter, S.C.

“After an extensive search that included nearly 50 candidates, the committee found Coach Price to have the right balance of experience, passion, and commitment to lead our girls’ basketball program forward,” says Head of School Will Kesler. “With his great background in the independent school world, he understands the expectations of our student-athletes on and off the court. He has a track record of developing players and teams throughout his career.”

Battle Ground Academy welcomes Clay Price as the head coach for the Lady Wildcats varsity basketball team. Clay also teaches Upper School history.

At Fellowship Christian, Clay rebuilt the girls’ basketball program, leading players to their second Georgia High School Association basketball playoffs this past season. While at Athens Academy, his team had a string of three consecutive GHSA playoff appearances, including a run to the final four. He was the Northeast Georgia Girls Coach of the Year in 2003.

In addition to coaching high school teams, he has served as a college men’s basketball assistant at Davidson College and University of South Carolina Upstate. He is a graduate of Coastal Carolina University, where he also played basketball. u

sports echo Jess Enderle Named Head Volleyball CoachJess Enderle has been named head volleyball coach for BGA. Jess’ coaching philosophy works to shape each student-athlete as a “whole person,” not just a volleyball player.

“Volleyball does not reduce a student’s academic responsibility,” says Jess. “Instead, the girls who participate in the volleyball program will develop good time management skills in order to fulfill their responsibilities to the team as well as their academic work.”

Jess was drawn to BGA based on her desire to work at a school with a compelling vision and a solid community.

“I strive to teach them that hard work and patience pay off and that in winning or losing you must maintain your honor and character.”

2015 Winstead Award WinnersHarm Abbott ’15 and Cole Grosvenor ’15 were presented with the 2015 Winstead Award. This award was established in 2013 by Beth and Kurt Winstead in honor of their daughters, Bridget ’09 and Mary Hannah ’12, and their achievements as athletes at BGA. The award is given at the end of each school year to students who have earned at least 12 athletic letters during their BGA career.

Harm earned 12 letters at BGA in football, trap, and soccer. Harm is the son of Hal ’84 and Karen Abbott.

Season Over But the Future Is Bright at BGA

Battle Ground Academy’s softball team was eliminated from post-season play with an 11-0 loss on the road at King’s Academy in Seymour. Few would consider the finish of the season as a reason to celebrate, but the Lady Wildcats might.

Two years ago they failed to make the postseason and it wasn’t because they didn’t have a record. It was because they didn’t have a team.

A storied program with a solid tradition, BGA coach Charley Manning found himself with just Upper School girls wanting to play. He was forced into making the gut-wrenching decision to cancel the program to rebuild.

“We played a middle school schedule, worked with our kids in the county rec league,” he recalls. “I had some great assistant coaches,” he says, adding they were all committed to getting the program back on track.

In what should be considered a second year program, the Lady Wildcats finished the season with a strong 12-9 record, a record forged without a single senior.

“We are still a very young team – we did not have a senior on the squad,” he says.

Lily Kruse ’16 is one of Charley’s go-to leaders, along with a trio of then-sophomores, Taylor Davis ’17, Sarah Fly ’17, and Sophia Gallamore ’17. He is looking forward to next season.

“We’ve got something to work with here,” he says. “We’ve got girls that can play and a ton of talent in the pipeline.”

That might turn out to be one of his great understatements. The Middle School dominated the Harpeth Valley Athletic Conference, finishing 10-0 on the season by run-ruling every team they

Just two years after not having enough players to field a team, BGA’s softball program is back on solid ground. This story is excerpted from the Williamson Herald following the end of the 2015 season.

faced to finish with a 174-3 run advantage.“I’ve never seen anything like it,”

Charley says. “It’s just a group of 7th and 6th graders...there’s not an 8th grader on the team.”

Much of the success comes from a trio of players who have been named to the All-HVAC team. Rayne Gray ’20 and Jordan Warzynski ’20 were dominant on the mound and Emari Frazier ’20 added more power at the plate.

“Rayne is pure power; Jordan puts a lot of spin on the ball,” he says. “The two complement each other extremely well.”

Rayne’s record was nothing short of frightening for opposing teams.

The seventh grader at the time threw a perfect game, five no-hitters and gave up only a single hit all season.

The veteran coach is quick to stress that the group’s abilities are not limited to just defense. At the plate, both Emari and Rayne slammed home runs over the left field fence in a split-squad scrimmage prior to the start of the post season.

With that much talent waiting in the wings, Charley is ready to start next year’s practice schedule now.

“I’ve been the softball coach at BGA for 12 years and I’ve never seen this much talent here at one time,” he says.


This project is the culmination of a capital campaign that began in 2008 and with its completion increases BGA’s physical plant by 50,000 square feet. BGA has cultivated space for both artists and athletes in Middle and Upper school with the completion of the Mary Campbell Visual Arts Center and the Jewell Athletic facility; in short, these additions have enhanced the experience of virtually every student who has attended BGA in the past four years and will continue to provide dedicated space for decades of students to come. Perhaps more impressively, BGA was able to do so through the generosity of our donors, ensuring that the school has incurred no long-term debt.

BGA thanks John Jewell III ’62 and Tyler Berry IV ’87, for co-chairing the campaign effort; without their enthusiasm and perseverance, these buildings would not have been possible.

Jewell Athletic and Wellness Center CompleteThe top floor of the state-of-the-art Jewell Athletic and Wellness Center is complete. While BGA athletes have enjoyed use of the indoor turf facility and weight room, the completion of the top floor includes much-needed locker rooms, houses meeting spaces that will honor Camp Hy-Lake “alums” as well as BGA Hall of Fame honorees, and provides new office spaces for coaching staff, allowing the Cherry Sports Center to be used more strategically.

Fred is the strength and conditioning coach at BGA and has 17 years of experience that includes coaching at Louisiana State University, the University of Tennessee, and the University

of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He was voted the 2013 Samson Equipment and American Football Monthly High School Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year and is a sought-after speaker in the field of strength and conditioning.

National Strength and Conditioning Association Honors Fred Eaves as the 2015 High School Coach of the Year Award WinnerFred Eaves, M.Ed, CSCS, RSCC was honored as the 24th recipient of the High School Coach of the Year Award. The award has been handed out since 1991 and is based on coaches’ contributions to the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), their community, and the coaching profession.

Dawn Drugeot is Director of the Learning Center at BGA. Dawn comes to BGA from Williamson County Schools’ Kenrose Elementary, where she was the ESL Specialist for grades K-5. Prior to her work there, she was the Learning Services Coordinator for Franklin Road Academy. She has earned her Bachelor of Education from the University of Western Ontario, Canada, her Bachelor of Arts Honors

English Language Learners from the University of Poitiers, France, and her Bachelor of Arts in French from the University of Trent, Canada.

Jamie Griffin joined BGA this summer as the Head of Upper School. Jamie comes to BGA from The Haverford School in Haverford, Penn., where he was an Upper School history teacher, the faculty advisor to the student-led Honor Council, varsity wrestling coach and junior varsity soccer coach. He previously served as a teacher and Dean of Students for his alma mater, The Episcopal Academy, in Newtown

Square, Penn. A graduate of The United States Naval Academy, he served from 2000 to 2006 as a Commissioned Officer with the United States Marine Corps. He has a Master of Education from Cabrini College.

Leigh Lambert ’95 joined BGA in the newly created position of Director of International Students. Leigh has recently returned to the United States after four years in Shanghai, China, where she worked at the Shanghai Reparatory Theatre. Prior to her time there, she was an Adjunct Professor at Belmont University. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Theatre in Business from the

University of Alabama and her master’s in education from New York University, Steinhardt College of Education.

Dustin Lynn joined BGA this summer as the Director of College Counseling. Dustin comes to BGA from Shorecrest Preparatory School in St. Petersburg, Fla., where he served as the Assistant Director of College Counseling. Prior to his work there, he worked in the Vanderbilt University Office of Undergraduate Admissions as a Senior Admissions Counselor and as an Alumni Program

Coordinator. He received his Bachelor of Science and his Master of Education from Vanderbilt University.

Spencer Connatser has joined BGA as a faculty member in the Foreign Language Department. Previously, he taught Upper and Middle School French at the University School of Jackson (USJ) in Jackson, Tenn. While at USJ, Spencer was responsible for organizing the Middle School French curriculum, and he led student trips to France and Québec, Canada. He has traveled extensively

through Europe, and brings great cultural experience into the classroom. Spencer received his Bachelor of Arts in Theology and French from Union University in Jackson, Tenn.

Robert Harry is a faculty member in the English Department and the Associate Director of College Counseling. A native Virginian, he comes to BGA from the United Kingdom where he was an English teacher and head of careers (college counseling office) at Oundle School, a large co-educational boarding and day school in Northamptonshire. Robert received his Bachelor of Arts in English

Language and Literature from the University of Virginia, and has completed work for a master’s in educational leadership from the University of Cambridge in England.

Alicia Brandewie has joined BGA as a faculty member in the English Department. Alicia comes to BGA from Vanderbilt University after completing her M.F.A. in Creative Writing. While at Vanderbilt, she was a writing consultant and instructor for a poetry workshop. She was also a graduate instructor at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Creative

Writing from Emory University.

Kenneth Coca is a faculty member in the Science Department and is assisting with soccer. He comes to BGA from Lipscomb University in Nashville where he taught general and organic chemistry. Previously, Kenneth was a chemistry consultant, teaching assistant, and research assistant at Fisk University. He received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from Lipscomb University.

Laine Milam ’09 has joined BGA as the Director of Alumni Relations. Laine comes to BGA from Gullett, Sanford, Robinson, & Martin in Nashville where she was a Legal Support Specialist and Client Liaison. Prior to her law firm work, she was a track coach and substitute teacher at BGA, and an editorial intern at Publishing Group of America. She received her Bachelor of Science in Political Science

from Belmont University in Nashville.

Andrew Phelps joined BGA as the Business Manager who will also oversee all Human Resource matters. Andrew comes to BGA from Girls Preparatory School (GPS) in Chattanooga, where he was the director of human resources. Previously, he was the financial manager and assistant to the headmaster. Jessica Enderle joined BGA as the head volleyball coach. Jess is currently the co-owner of Club West Sports and was the director and founder of Club West Volleyball Nashville. Prior to that, she was the head volleyball coach at Page High School. Under her leadership, Page High School had four consecutive undefeated District Championships, four TSSAA State appearances, and two

TSSAA State Championships.

Raye McDonald has joined BGA as the Athletic Administrative Assistant. She comes to BGA from Belmont University where she worked as the Video Services Coordinator for the Athletic Department. Prior to Belmont, Raye worked as a marketing intern for D1 Sports Training and Therapy in Franklin. She received her Bachelor of Science from MTSU in Murfreesboro, Tenn., and her Master of Sports

Administration from Belmont University in Nashville.

Trisha Davis has joined BGA as a 3rd grade teacher. She comes to BGA from Oak View Elementary where she was an assistant librarian. She has coached softball at BGA and in the basketball training league at Oak View. Trisha has also served as a substitute teacher at BGA and in Williamson County Schools. She received her Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Wellness from Belmont University and her

Master of Education from Lipscomb University.


Lower School

Amy Bruff has joined BGA as a 1st grade teacher. Amy comes to BGA from Akiva School, where she taught Kindergarten. Prior to that, she taught Kindergarten at Lipscomb Elementary School and Harding Academy. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Religion from Furman University in Greenville, S.C. and her Master of Education from Vanderbilt University, Peabody College.

Dr. Scott Johnson has joined BGA as a faculty member in the History Department and as assistant coach for football and basketball. He is an award-winning educator, having been named the 2014 History Teacher of the Year by Tennessee National History Day and the Tennessee State Historical Society. Scott joins BGA from Lausanne Collegiate School in Memphis, Tenn., where he

taught a variety of AP and college-prep history courses, was the Director of the Chapman-Woodbury Oral History Program, and an assistant varsity football and boys’ basketball coach. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Religion from Olivet Nazarene University in Illinois, his Master of Arts in History Education from the University of Iowa, and his Doctor of Education from Walden University.

Clay Price joined BGA as faculty member in the History Department and as the Varsity Girls’ Basketball Coach. With a great deal of experience in the independent school world, he understands the expectations of BGA’s student-athletes on and off the court. Abby Kropp has traveled and spent time with family and friends. Most exciting is that she and her husband will become grandparents soon; their daughter Sarah Pearce ’05 and her husband, McFall, are expecting a baby in February! She is also taking her 87-year-old mother to France for two weeks in the fall and planning a trip to France with students next May. “Life is good, retirement is good. I saw so many kids go through their "Moving Up" ceremony at the end of 8th grade and I have moved up as well,” she says.

Diane Parker has enjoyed traveling and seeing family, including helping hang an art show for her brother this summer in California. She also loved being able to meet a brand new great niece and great nephew. Diane admits she classifies herself as a recovering art teacher because everywhere she goes, she is still noticing elements of the art world she would like to take back to her former classroom. She concedes she will always be an art teacher and misses the kids tremendously. These days when she is not skipping from airport to airport, she enjoys working on her house and decorating.

You are incredibly passionate about college counseling; what brought you to the field? I am actually a first-generation college student. Growing up in rural Waynesboro, Tenn., I did not have readily available opportunities to learn about colleges and their application processes. Outside of a few mentors at my high school, I had to navigate the college search and application process alone. For me, college was transformative, and I believe that every student should have the opportunity to maximize his or her potential through understanding the array of college options available and how to attain admission.

How will your experience at Vanderbilt benefit BGA students? I tell all my students, “I have two goals when helping you find the college that’s right for you. First, I want you to train me to think like you so I can help you discover a college that fits you individually, and second, I want to train you to think like me so you’ll know what an admissions officer is thinking when you’re examining a college or reviewing your applications.” Vanderbilt provided me opportunities to learn about highly selective college admissions and the myriad of factors admissions committees consider. Admissions work is both an art and a science, combining data analysis with a flair for understanding people and their contexts.

How would you describe your philosophy on college counseling? It’s grounded in understanding that each student and family value aspects of the college search differently. For some, affordability and in-state location are paramount. For others, an academic challenge and an adventure beyond the borders of Tennessee are important. By understanding what each student values, we can create a college search tailored to his or her needs and aspirations. When this approach is paired with developmentally appropriate opportunities for students to learn more about themselves and college options, they have the best opportunity to identify the college that best fits their goals.

What trends are you seeing in college counseling and what students are seeking in their college choices? The most selective colleges continue to become even more so as an increasing number of highly qualified students apply. Many colleges are also using demonstrated interest (i.e., the degree to which a student displays his or her interest/commitment to a college or university) in their selection decisions. Some colleges are also moving toward test-optional policies after noticing their competitive pools possess some students who are fantastic fits for their institutions, yet lack the metrics for admission. I continue to hear concerns from students and families about affordability and return on investment. In these turbulent economic times and the rate at which the workforce is evolving, parents want to ensure their dollars are spent for an education that prepares their students for entry into an ever-changing, competitive job market.

How are students and families making decisions based on college loans and debt versus choosing a school with a better ranking? Families are still examining the cost of college when making enrollment decisions. Many want to take advantage of the great educational opportunities here in Tennessee by enrolling in a local college and cashing in on the Hope Scholarship. Others aggressively apply for scholarships or seek colleges offering generous scholarships that align with their students’ test scores and GPAs. It all goes back to what each family values. A college’s ranking should weigh little in a student’s decision to enroll. Instead, examining the other “fit factors” (such as rigor of academics, student body composition, extracurricular and pre-professional opportunities, and culture) should be the focus. However, it’s important to search for scholarship, grant, and financial aid opportunities regardless of the institution.

Dustin Lynn Brings Expertise, Passion to Director of College Counseling PositionDustin Lynn, BGA’s new Director of College Counseling, spoke with echo about how his experience in higher education can give applicants an edge and how his true passion is helping each student find the perfect fit for his or her next four years after BGA.

What made you want to return to BGA after living abroad for several years? My family and I moved back from Shanghai, China about a year ago. When I heard about the opportunity for the Director of International Students, I thought it was the best of both worlds. It would tie my experience in China to BGA, both of which I consider game changers in my life.

How does BGA plan to attract international students? Most of our students come through a program called New Oasis. New Oasis helps find host families and provides academic information for the students before they arrive. At BGA, we are also providing more services to help with the students’ transitions and during their time at the school.

Why is having international students important for a school like BGA? The world is getting smaller, and people are traveling and working in other countries. Our students are interested in the world in their own ways, so preparing them for this is important.

What are the biggest challenges these students face while here? I think the biggest challenge is being away from their family. That is why it is so important for the BGA community to give these students the support they need to be successful.

How can BGA students and faculty get the most of out having international students on campus? Get to know the students. Find out about their interests. Ask them their culture’s opinion on certain topics. Ask them about family traditions and holidays. I think you will find that we have more similarities than differences.

Leigh Lambert ’95 Joins BGA in Newly Created Director of International Students PositionLeigh Lambert ’95 has returned to BGA to serve as the school’s first-ever Director of International Students. Although this first year of BGA’s International Student program will surely bring challenges, Leigh shares her excitement with echo about how making our BGA community a little bigger might make our world feel a little smaller.

Sometimes the schools with the biggest price tags often spend the most money to help students afford them.

What advice do you have for students and parents who are beginning their college search? Breathe! The college search is often misconstrued as a roller coaster of confusing and often conflicting information and emotions. While that’s true at times, remember that we are here to support you. For students who are beginning Upper School here at BGA, it’s important to do your best. It sounds simple enough, but I work with plenty of seniors who lament, “I wish I would have worked harder as a freshman and sophomore.” Colleges base their preliminary decision on your freshman through junior year grades, so ensuring that you have a solid foundation is key. Secondly, explore! Look for ways to engage outside the classroom with things you love. Remember that this is the time to learn more about yourself. Not everything you try will become a passion, and that’s fine! Use these years to create a foundation for success and self-discovery that will later guide you through the college search.

How do you define success for a student at the end of the college selection process? College rankings, peer pressure, and advice from parents and counselors are all difficult for students to navigate. If a student can maintain a commitment to self-reflection then allow the knowledge gained from that perspective to guide the college search and decision process, then that student has succeeded in my mind. It all goes back to Shakespeare, “To thine own self be true.”

What excites you most about being back at BGA as Director of Alumni? I’m so excited for the chance to engage in all aspects of campus life and communicate to our alumni how the BGA of today looks and feels.

In what ways have you been involved with BGA since you’ve graduated? Since graduation, I have coached Middle School volleyball and Upper School track, and I have served on the Alumni Board as the youngest member in the history of the board.

How do you hope to engage alumni in new ways? BGA grads are 3,400 strong worldwide and include industry leaders, public servants, and community influencers. We have a real opportunity to partner alumni with current students and prime the next generation for global success.

What activities were important to you during your time as a student at BGA? I had the quintessential BGA experience by taking AP classes, playing sports (volleyball and track), and serving on the Honor Council. Those are some of my favorite memories and proudest accomplishments.

A scholarship has been created in honor of Jimmy Burchett ‘58, the BGA alum and longtime Franklin High School girls’ soccer coach who brought home four state championships. He was recently diagnosed with lung cancer. BGA Welcomes Dr. Eleanor Fleming ’96 to Board of TrustEleanor Fleming ’96, PhD, DDS, MPH is a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) and BGA’s newest member of the Board of Trust.

As a dental public health officer, Eleanor works as an epidemiologist at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics in Hyattsville, Md. Previously, she was assigned to the North Carolina Division of Public Health and served as CDC epidemic intelligence service officer (disease detective) in Atlanta. Eleanor works to improve the health of minority and underserved communities through active public health practice, research, teaching, and community engagement. In 2007, the BGA Alumni Association selected her as its Distinguished Young Alum for her professional and community service work. “Whether I’m doing fieldwork in Kenya, analyzing public health data and writing reports, or giving my time in my community, I always remember the lessons I learned while at BGA,” Eleanor says.

Eleanor was the salutatorian of her class at BGA. She went on to Vanderbilt University and in 2000 she completed her undergraduate training in political science and African American studies, graduating with summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa distinctions. She remained there to earn her master’s and doctorate degrees in political science in 2003 and 2006, respectively. After working as a senior lecturer at Vanderbilt, she began her dental training at Meharry Medical College in 2007. She graduated with her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 2011; there she was the first Ingram Scholar in the School of Dentistry and a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Scholar at the College. In May 2015, she received her Master of Public Health degree from East Tennessee State University. Eleanor’s work has been published in peer-reviewed journals and books,

earned awards from the USPHS and the National Dental Association, and been presented at state, national, and international conferences. In 2014, her work supporting the fight against Ebola was acknowledged in TIME magazine’s Person of the Year story, “Ebola Fighters.”

Doug Langston, a former Williamson County official and educator for nearly 40 years at Battle Ground Academy, died July 24 at the age of 73 after suffering a stroke.

Doug taught history, coached football, and served for about a decade each on the Williamson County Commission and Franklin Board of Mayor and Alderman. Gloria Langston, who met her husband when she was a Spanish teacher at BGA, says she was drawn to him because “he seemed to be very kind.” The two married in Franklin in 2005.

Greer Bickley ’04, who played quarterback while at BGA, remembers Doug as a behind-the-scenes guy with a jovial sense of humor. Greer says that while his offensive coordinator was “always on my back in practice,” he seemed deeply invested in both the team itself and individual players. Matt Vick ’96, whose father also coached at the school, says Doug’s decision to work with offensive linemen was telling of his ethos. “They don’t get a lot of recognition – they’re tirelessly toiling behind the team,” he says. “The lineman coaches are unsung heroes…that just summed [Doug] up.” In the classroom, he had a way of getting students interested in potentially dry subjects, according to former student Sam Moran ’04. “He was like a human encyclopedia,” Sam says. “He had a great way of relating to students.” Doug graduated from Dickson High School, before going on to earn a history degree from Middle Tennessee State University. Before starting at BGA, he taught history and coached football and girls’ basketball in Shelbyville. He is survived by his wife; his daughter, Carol Eaton, and his son-in-law, Wayne Eaton; his stepchildren, David and Valerie Wilhite; three grandchildren; three siblings; and nieces and nephews.

Longtime Battle Ground Academy Educator Doug Langston DiesBy Jill Cowan, Excerpted with permission from The Tennessean

Personal recollections of Tandy Clinton Rice, Jr. – colorful and endearing – came without hesitation in Franklin as individuals captured the magic of his spirited youth, exceptional athleticism, and creative genius for promotion. Tandy, a sixth-generation Williamson Countian, died August 3 at the age of 76 of complications from a brief illness. Bright-eyed, smiling, and full of boundless energy for others, Tandy has a life story filled with all the makings of a great Southern novel, if only it were fiction.

A Native Son Born to a family whose reputation was set early in Franklin history, Tandy was the great, great grandson of John B. McEwen, Franklin mayor at the onset of the Civil War. The McEwen heritage was an ever-present strength for Tandy, but it was the stellar reputation of his father, a physician in Franklin in the years leading to World War II, that provided nurture and support as he made his way through school. Tandy grew up just south of Franklin’s Main Street where he and his friends ran together in those days. “I remember him when I was 4 or 5 and he was 16 or 17,” says Bill Armistead ’69, Battle Ground Academy Board of Trust member and retired attorney. “He lived diagonal across the street from my grandmother Mattie Armistead on Lewisburg Avenue.” The friendship, Bill says, was solidified when they served years ago on the BGA board together, although Tandy graduated from Franklin High School. It was the mutual affection for family that Bill says he will always appreciate. “He was just one-of-a-kind. He was a great person and I’m going to miss him.” Bill agrees that loyalty prevailed above all else throughout Tandy’s life. “If he was your friend, he was loyal and interested in you.”

A Summer in CairoTyler Lawrence ’12 has always had the drive to succeed. At BGA, he was class salutatorian, captain of the speech and debate team, and lead in school plays. Now a senior at Princeton, majoring in politics, with minors in Near Eastern studies and theater, Tyler continues to excel in the classroom and beyond.

In the summer of 2015, he worked in Cairo, Egypt, and Casablanca, Morocco as an entrepreneur selection and growth analyst for Endeavor Entrepreneurs, an organization dedicated to catalyze long-term economic growth by selecting, mentoring, and accelerating the best high-impact entrepreneurs across the country. He shared with echo about his experience.

How are you involved on campus? I’m co-chair of a student government committee, and I’ve served for three years now on the board of one of the student theater companies. Additionally, I’ve continued to perform and began directing once I got to college. Last fall, I directed my third production when we staged “Little Shop of Horrors” on campus.

What awards or recognitions have you received during college?After my first year, I received the Shapiro Prize, recognizing academic achievement among members of the freshman class. Then, last summer, I was awarded a Critical Language Scholarship by the State Department to study Arabic in Oman.

How did you become involved with Endeavor?I first heard about Endeavor my freshman year in a seminar about philanthropy, and I became intrigued by their model. Its goal is to stimulate economic growth and create jobs by providing mentorship to “high-impact entrepreneurs” – those who’ve created a scalable company that could employ many people. They offer placements through a Princeton program, and so I jumped at the chance to work in their Cairo office. Unfortunately, the security situation in Cairo deteriorated, but the organization arranged my transfer to their Morocco office to finish the summer.

Tell us about the types of projects you worked on in Egypt and Morocco?One of the amazing parts of the internship was the wide variety in my responsibilities. I sat in on sessions between Endeavor’s brilliant mentors and Endeavor Entrepreneurs, which were incredibly enlightening in regards to the difficulties faced by people running a business in these environments. I worked on a promotional video for Endeavor Egypt, and I created lots of internal processes and documents for their associates. In Morocco, my French (begun in 7th grade with Madame Kropp!) was useful, so I could write up reports and translate meeting notes into English. What unique experiences did you have outside of work while abroad? The most enriching experience was definitely being able to meet and interact with so many locals, and to compare their own ideas of their countries and ours with the impressions the American media and government have given to us. In general, I’ve found consistently that contrary to what we’re often told about how much “they” hate “us,” most Arabs really love the idea of the United States and the freedoms we represent. What they don’t always like are elements of the American government, and American foreign policy post-9/11, but that’s true of plenty of people here as well. Those interactions give me hope that we can have a much better relationship with this part of the world in the future, if we work to get past the stereotypes we’ve built up.

How will your position this past summer be of benefit as you move toward graduation? Honestly, I’m not quite sure. I’m still exploring my post-grad options, but I’d like to go back to the Middle East and work for a few years. I’ve already spent two summers in the Arab world, one working with an Egyptian organization, so that experience should help me land a position. It’s given me a perspective on lots of things – the economy, the culture, the people – that people who’ve never been outside the United States or Europe just wouldn’t have, and I’m incredibly grateful for that. What experiences and/or faculty at BGA helped prepare you for your time at Princeton and for this past summer? Speech and debate was the anchor to my BGA experience, and I find myself constantly drawing on skills I learned there with Mrs. Ward. The research skills from Congressional Debate, the confidence and self-presentation that come out whenever I have to speak in class, or present to a group of supervisors...the takeaways are endless. Besides that, I would say that the best preparation came out of BGA’s English program, because I arrived already knowing how to write well. The base I built in Ms. Handelsman’s class, and continued later in AP with Mr. Medlin and Ms. Golden, was really excellent. Once I got to college, I could hit the ground running. What advice would you give current BGA students interested in pursuing their future at a school like Princeton? Take every chance you can to expand yourself. That could be from structured things – I did several summer programs for speech and theater in high school, for example – but it could also just be working a job with responsibilities different from what BGA gives you. These schools don’t just want intelligent people or hard workers – they want people who’ve proven that they want to broaden their perspective on the world. u

Dear BGA Community,

The 2014-2015 school year marked a transcending point in Battle Ground Academy’s distinguished history. We welcomed our 14th Head of School, were fully engaged in a strategic planning process, and completed fund raising for our two most recent additions to the Glen Echo campus – the Mary Campbell Visual Arts Center and the Jewell Athletic & Wellness Center. All the while, our students continued a tradition of excellence in the classroom, on the stage, and the fields of play.

Our school is a community and as such requires participation and commitment to thrive. I am thankful to say that the BGA community continues to support our students and our teachers in all of their endeavors, and gives generously of themselves when asked. Even a quick visit to our campuses provides several opportunities to see how voluntary support makes a difference at our school. Whether it’s the new playground equipment at the Lower School, classroom technology in the Middle School, or the landscaping surrounding the Upper School classrooms, all are the result of your generosity and for that, the Board of Trustees and I are entirely grateful.

And so, we move forward towards even more exciting times. Since our strategic plan (outlined in this edition of echo) has been approved and launched, several initiatives are already underway. Our enrollment numbers are healthy with waiting lists for our Upper School. And school spirit is alive and well which may be hard to quantify but is easily seen and felt by all. This is an exciting time for our school and on behalf of the entire Board of Trustees, I thank you for your support of BGA and your commitment to the success of our students.
