significance of the Enter Key" engenders anxiety. 28 At the same t ime,the electronic text for her is "impersonal; letters and numbers seem toappear without having been derived from an embodied process ofauthorship."29 As Beverly Burris argues:

In offices, for instance, machines such as the typewriter presupposesome degree of worker pacing, whereas word processing technologyhas the capacity to be systematized. Such systems can be used bymanagement to undermine worker autonomy; tasks can be fragmentedand assigned to different workers, and work can be teclmo!ogicallypaced and monitored for productivity and errors . . . . Among thenon-expert sector, whether clerical or production staff, computerizedtechnology has typically been used to isolate and control workers.Predominantly male managers and technical experts control the laboror workers who are disproportionately emale and non-white, usingtechnology to embody and promote social differentiation andmanagerial control, both domestically and internationally. 3~

In advanced industrial societies under the regime of an ascendanttechnocracy, there is a bifurcation between the experts and non-expertsbut women in both the sectors have borne more brunt. "Women are tobe found in great numbers operating machinery . . . But womencontinue to be rarities in those occupations that involve knowing whatgoes on inside the machine.'31 In 1980, 93 percent of the keypunchoperators in the U.S. were female but only 22 percent of systemsanalysts. 32 In the export-processing zones of multinationalcorporations, while young women comprise "80-90 percent ofop era ti ve s .. . Men predominate within the smaller administrative andtechnical expert s e c t o r . . . ,,33 Even within the expert sector, the workof women managers is subject to be patriarchal stereotyping. AsCockburn tells us: " . . . when the dust settles after the technologicalrevolution, the same old male/female pattern can be seen to havereestablished itself. The general law seems to be: women may press thebuttons, but they may not meddle with the works . . . Always theperson who knows best, who has the last say about the technology is,, 34a ma n . . .

Here, it must be noted that although opportunities for women inadvanced capitalist societies appear to have increased during the pasttwo decades, their overall economic situation has deteriorated.
