What are head lice? Head lice are small insects that live on people’s heads and feed on human blood. Head lice may be found anywhere on the head, but are usually found on the scalp, along the neck line and behind the ears. What are the symptoms of head lice? You may get a tickling feeling on your head. When lice bite the scalp, it may cause itching and sometimes redness. Itchiness does not always mean that a person has head lice as other things can cause an itchy scalp. It is also possible to have head lice and not have any symp-toms. School Information It is important if your child has head lice to please notify the school. A letter will go home to all families in your child’s class. For additional information please contact the public health office at 1-888-315-9257.

PEACE DAYS

On September 14th all the Grade 4 students went to Peace Days at the Forks in Winnipeg. We got on the bus at 9:00 and arrived at 10:00. Some speakers talked about peace and then some students from each school talked about friendship. Sydney and Evelyn spoke for our school. Next, we walked inside the Human Rights Museum and gave away our friendship cards. Then a man played music and we had a snack. Some kids danced to the music. Some police men gave us stickers and tattoos. We got back on the bus around 12:00 and got back to school at 1:00. We had a WONDERFUL day! By Rorie Pleskach and Sierra Kurbis

Emergency Procedures

Every school year the staff and students at ÉBEYS are required to practice the following:

10 fire drills

2 lockdowns go to your safe place

1 tornado drill

2 whole school evacuations

1 hold and secure

During the next few weeks we will be practicing these procedures. After each

drill the teachers will debrief with the stu-dents and students will be made aware that they are only “practice” drills. In the event of a real emergency a letter will be sent home to all parents with information about the emergency.

Terry Fox Walk/Run On Thursday, September 27th, students, staff, and a few family members braved the

cold weather for our annual Terry Fox Walk/Run. The walk itself was a success but

the fundraising for the Terry Fox Foundation was an even bigger success. We have

fundraised $1224.71!!!! This means 24 students will be randomly picked from a hat

to throw a water balloon at a

couple of staff members in front

of the whole school. Thank you

for your generous contributions!

UNESCO Team News: Our Global Project

Each year at ÉBEYS, our school raises awareness & funds for a global project, which this year is Bridging Villages.

Bridging Villages accomplishes much of its work in a small community in Uganda called, Namavundu. This village is made up of families from a wide range of economic backgrounds. Many survive on less than $10 per month and find it challenging to afford shelter. Bridging Villages is currently working on a project that would provide housing for five families in the community. Dur-ing this time, women will be trained on employment skills such as carpentry, welding, mechanics and more at a training facility built by Bridging Villages. Our school community is supporting Bridging Villages' project by raising money for the construction of roofs for the five houses & training facility. ÉBEYS will be holding a Pyjama Day on October 26th. Students are asked to wear pyjamas and bring a loonie to help build the roof. Another fundraiser will be a whole-school pizza lunch in April. In addition to fundraising, this project will have classroom connections as students learn about Uganda and network with the people of Namavundu.

Tips for Safety on Halloween Trick or Treating

Halloween and Trick or Treating can be a very exciting time for kids, and adults alike. Here are some tips to keep Halloween safe and not turn scary.

1. Pick the right size: Make sure that costumes fit properly.

Hems should be well above the ground to avoid tripping, and

kids should have full range of motion.

2. Keep it bright: Dark colours are obviously harder to see at

night, so dress your kids up in bright costumes or add reflec-

tive accessories to dark getups.

3. Break out the makeup: Since masks can obstruct vision, create the same idea

with face paint. Test it out: Before the big day though, try the face paint to make sure

your child doesn’t have a skin reaction. Wash all make-up off before tucking them into

bed.

4. Get your glow on: Light your kids up with glow sticks, bike lights clipped onto cos-

tumes and reflective tape. And give them a flashlight, or carry one with you.

5. Supervise little trick-or-treaters: Little kids should always have an adult with

them.

6. Go as a group: Older kids should travel together, stick to a route they’ve cleared

with their parents, check in by phone regularly, and have a set curfew to return home.

7. Choose wisely: Don’t feel you have to hit every home on the block. Look for well-lit

locations with pumpkins on display.

8. Stay on the step: Kids should never enter into a stranger’s home.

9. Follow the rules of the road: Set a good example and only cross the street at es-

tablished crosswalks. If you are driving in residential areas, take it slow.

10. Check it all out: Before you let your kids dive in, dump the entire candy bag out

and inspect it all. Throw out any packages that look like they’ve been opened and any

homemade or repackaged goods.

COUNSELLOR’S CORNER

Dear Students and Parents,

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I felt it a good time to speak

with staff and students about the virtue of “Thankfulness”. Being

thankful is one of the ways we can show others our appreciation for

them and what they do.

Here are some ways that students at EBEYS say that they show they

are thankful:

1. I can show others I’m thankful by making them a thank you card.

2. By returning a favor.

3. Being thankful for what I have and not complaining about what I don’t have.

4. Giving to those less fortunate than myself.

5. Sharing with others.

6. Spending time with a person, and showing them I am thankful that they are in

my life.

7. Saying Please and Thank-you.

8. Smiling at people, waving hello and saying good morning.

“He enjoys much who is thankful for little.” – Thomas Secker

“If you are really thankful, what do you do? You share.”- W. Clement Stone

Canadian Parents for French (CPF) is a non-francophone, non-for profit organiza-tion, working for the encouragement and benefit of students, learning the French lan-guage, and their parents. We understand that this can be especially demanding when there is no French spoken at home. Comprised mainly of parents like yourself, and educators, we meet regularly, to develop programs and activities to help our children. Membership costs as little as $25 a year for a family, and gains you access to the fol-lowing benefits: Local monthly meetings of like-minded people and educators, A digital toolkit to help your child become bilingual, Monthly magazine, Access to a research database, Access to a Peer tutoring literacy program, Access to programs run by the Beausejour chapter, such as Concours d’art ora-

toire – a popular French speaking competition, summer camp, and other organized events.

Got some good ideas? Then come along and share your ideas and influence your child’s future. Meetings are at École Beausejour Early Years, in the staff room at 7:00 p.m. on the following dates: AGM: October 17

What is Kids Club? Kids club is offered for children ages 5 to 13, on the last Friday of every month. It is from 6:30 to 9:00pm with a fee of $5 at the door.
