Biographical Sketch Beverly Gherman was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on December 12, 1934. Her parents were both owners of a dress shop. Gherman was an avid reader in elementary school, including of biographies, a genre in which she would distinguish herself as a writer in later years.

Her fondness for reading lead to frequent visits to libraries, and eventually a job as a librarian's assistant. It was in this capacity that Gherman invited neighbor and children's book writer Marilyn Sachs to do programs for young readers at her library. Gherman thus observed the power that children's books had on their young audience, which in turn awoke a desire within her to write one of her own. After her own children had grown up, Gherman decided to realize her ambition to be a writer of children's books. As a result, she sought guidance in a writing class taught by Susan Terris, a children's author. With lessons from Terris and the feedback of her fellow students, Gherman developed the skills and confidence she sought.

Gherman eventually submitted a proposal for a children's biography of artist Georgia O'Keeffe to three publishers. After initial rejections, the third publisher, Atheneum, accepted her proposal, and Gherman set herself to the task of refining her manuscript and seeking photographs of O'Keeffe's life and work to use in the book Georgia O'Keeffe: The “Wideness and Wonder” of Her World, which was published in 1986.

Gherman has followed with eleven more biographies for young people. Her subjects ranged from fellow writers, such as E. B. White and Robert Louis Stevenson, to artists, such as photographer Ansel Adams, painter Norman Rockwell, dancer Agnes De Mille, and cartoonist Charles Schulz. Other biographies explore the lives of the powerful, such as Presidents John Quincy Adams and Jimmy Carter and Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, and the pioneering, such as scientist Wilhelm Röntgen and aviator Anne Morrow Lindbergh. Gherman's biographies have received critical praise for being accessible to young readers and their ability to inspire interest in the lives of her many and varied subjects, who all had in common a gift for making a difference in the world around them.
