BRIEF LOOK INTO THE HISTORY OF SMOKING SHISHA

The Hookah (shisha) pipe has a rich and varied history that includes numerous incarnations and names depending on where in the world it is used. Originally constructed from a coconut shell in India, the Hookah became a popular smoking device in Arab nations. Its current incarnation, which has been utilised for several hundred years, originated in Turkey.

Hookah usage became common in Turkish coffee shops since 17th century. The Hookah is called a nargile in Turkey. Tobacco imported from Iran was washed numerous times before being placed in the pipe. Known for being incredibly strong, the oak charcoal was placed on the tobacco for smoking enjoyment. Fruits such as the pomegranate were sometimes used to add flavour.
