ThankyouforyourinterestinYaleUniversitySchoolofNursing!Wewelcomeapplicantsfromallbackgroundsandexperiences,bothnursesandnon-nursesalike.ThehardesttaskistochoosethosewhohavewhatittakestobeaYaleNurse.Allareintelligentandmotivated,butwhatseparatesthemistheiruncommonsocialconscience.YaleNurseswanttochangetheworldandassurethatallhaveaccesstohighqualityhealthcare.Theyareunafraidofchallengingthestatusquo,ofquestioning“why,”andofcreatingnewmodelsofpatientcare.TheycometoYalebecausetheyknowthattheywillbepreparedtonavigatecomplexsystems,tocareforindividualsandfamilies,andtoadvocatefortheirpatientsandcommunities.
Analumnarecentlyrelatedanexperienceshehadanumberofyearsago.Shewasthenurseinchargeofstaffinginalargeurbanclinic.Duringaparticularlybusyday,theywereshort-staffedandoneofthecliniciansimpatientlyrequestedadditionalnurses.Theclinicianthenadded,“….andgetmeaYalenurse.”
EvidencethatYaleNursesarecarryingoutourmission,“betterhealthcareforallpeople,”canbefoundaroundtheglobe.Astheworldcontinuestoshrink,ournursesareattheforefrontofbringingaboutchange,whetheritishereinNewHaven,inhealthcaresettingsthroughouttheUnitedStates,inuniversitiesandmedicalcentersaroundtheworld,oreveninremotevillageswithlimitedaccesstohealthcare.
Inadditiontoacademicandclinicalexcellence,ysnisontheforefrontofgroundbreakingresearchinhealth-relatedbehavior,improvingself-managementinpeoplelivingwithchronicillness,andinthedevelopmentofnewevidencetosupportnursingpractice.Sinceitsinceptionin1923,ysnfacultyandstudentshavedevelopedstrategiestoaddressthemostpressingglobalhealthcareproblems.

WeencourageyoutoconsiderYaleUniversitySchoolofNursingforyourgraduatestudies,andareproudtobeadiversecommunityofcliniciansandscholarswithonecommongoal:

Foundedin1923,YaleUniversitySchoolofNursingbecamethefirstschoolwithinauniversitytopreparenursesunderaneducationalratherthananapprenticeshipprogram.DeanAnnieGoodrich’sinsistencethatherstudentscometoYaletolearnahighlyskilledprofessionratherthantoprovideextrahandstoalreadytrainednurseswastrulyrevolutionary.TheSchoolhascontinuedtospawnnewideasthathavehelpedredefinenursing:theground-breakingresearchofVirginiaHenderson;thefoundingoftheAmericanhospicemovementbyDeanFlorenceSchorskeWald;theadvance-mentofclinicaltrialsinnursingwithleadershipfromDr.RhetaughGravesDumas;andthefirst“graduateentry”systemthatenlivenednursingpracticebyattractingmaturestudentswithvariedandrichlifeexperiences.

TheMidwiferyspecialtypreparesnurse-midwivestoprovidefamily-centeredprimaryhealthcareforwomenandfortheirnewbornsuntiltwentyeightdaysoflife.Courseandclinicalworkfocusontheindependentmanagementofthehealthcareneedsofwomenandnewbornsduringpregnancy,birth,andthepostpartumperiods;aswellasfamilyplanningandgynecologicalcarefromadolescencethroughmenopause.Studentslearncollaborativemanagementofthecareofwomenandnewbornswithcomplications.Clini-calpracticetakesplacewithinhealthcaresystemsthatprovideformedicalconsultation,collaborativemanagement,andreferral,whichisinaccordwiththeStandardsforNurse-MidwiferyPracticeoftheAmericanCollegeofNurse-Midwives.Electivesandindepen-dentstudyofferopportunitiesforstudentstopursueindividualeducationalandprofessionalgoals.Studentslearntoexaminetheirclinicalpracticecritically,todevelopbeginningskillintheuseandevaluationofresearchmethodsandstatisticsandtoexaminehealthcarepolicies.
ThePediatricNursePractitionerspecialtypreparesgraduatesforexpandedrolesintheprovisionofprimarycaretochildrenandadolescents.Coursesfocusontheoriesandclinicalapplicationrelatedtohealthpromotion,healthanddevelopmentalassessment,pathophysiology,pharmacology,andmanagementofcommonacuteandchronicconditionsinchildrenandadolescentswithafamily-centeredapproachtocare.Thereisanemphasisonthedevelopmentofevidence-basedresearchskillsfundamentaltoadvancedpracticenursing.Eachstudentprovidesprimaryhealthcareforchildrenandadolescentsinavarietyofclinicalsettings,includingcommunity-basedandprivatepractices,andschool-basedhealthcenters.Inaddition,studentsselectaspecialtyclinicalrota-tionwithrelevancetopediatricprimarycare.Inallclinicalplace-ments,theroleofthePNPasamemberofaninterdisciplinaryteamandcoordinatoracrosssystemsofcarewithinthecontextoffamilyisemphasized.

Psychiatric-Mental Health NursingThePsychiatric-MentalHealthNursingspecialtypreparespsychiat-
ricnursepractitionerstoprovideawiderangeofservicestochildren,adolescents,adults,and/orfamilies.Studentsareexpectedtoevaluatebehaviorandformulateplansofcareusingmultipletheoreticalframeworks:cultural/ethnic,intrapsychic,developmen-tal,neurobiological,familial,andsocial.Extensivesupervisedclinicalstudyfocusesonvarioustypesofassessmentandpsychotherapeu-ticinterventions.Theprogramisdesignedtomeettheneedsofthechanginghealthcareenvironment,andfocusesondevelopingskillsthatallowforflexibilityinassessment,diagnosis,andtreatmentofpopulationsdefinedashigh-riskconsumersofpsychiatriccare.Courseworkandclinicalpracticefocusondevelopmentofadvancedpracticenursingskillsinspecificsettingssuchaschildrenandfamilies;medicallyillclients;adultswithpsychiatricdisabilities;gerontologicalclients;andclientswithsubstanceabusedisorders.Inadditiontodiagnosticassessmentskillsandapplicationofevidencebasedtreatmentinterventions,studentslearntheartofprescribingmedicationsunderthesupervisionofalicensedprescriber.Studentsarerequiredtospecializeinoneoftwoconcentrations:AdultorFamily.
