Continuing with the celebration of our 10th anniversary, I wanted to pause and look back for a moment. As the owner of a small business, it's easy to get caught up in the hustle to grow and put all your focus forward. I wanted
to take a moment to look back and appreciate all the lessons I have learned along the way. I am overwhelmed with gratefulness and can't find the words to thank our South Florida community for trusting and joining us in our mission.
Before this issue went to print, I sat down with my team and looked through some of our past issues. We came across our very first issue and flipped through the pages. It was like holding a newborn, a little messy and not very cute, but so perfect because of how much I believed in it's potential. That first year was hard but it was also fleeting. Looking through some of our other issues was like looking at photos of yourself as a child. It felt a little awkward but also very satisfying to see that we finally grew into our

own skin. Here we are 10 years later, and I can wholeheartedly say that the most important lesson I have learned is that relationships are valuable and worth the investment. When we want responsibility for the growth of our families and community and we are open to learning, we open the door to connection. Connecting with our readers, schools, and families has allowed me to feel a sense of belonging and social support in South Florida. Through these relationships and connections, I have been able to collaborate with others who have personally inspired me and have had the opportunity to gain from their knowledge. That is my priceless take-away from the last 10 years. As we begin a new school year, I want to challenge you, whether you are an educator, a parent, or a student, to strengthen relationships and make connections! A teacher or a parent in your corner can be invaluable.
In this issue, you will find a catalog of the best schools in South Florida to help you plan for your child’s future. We've also included guides to setting better habits, starting the new school year with intention and preparing your kids for the future. We wish you all a successful 2019-2020 school year!

A new school year has arrived and back-to-school routines are in full swing. New backpacks and packed lunches waiting by the front door are a reminder that the lazy days of summer are over. The late nights and laid-back mornings have been replaced with your redundant “Go to sleep” and the deafening sound of alarm clocks. It's that
inevitable time of the year where anxiety meets excitement for both parents and students alike.
Chances are you started adjusting sleep schedules and bedtimes weeks before school started, you've packed lunches and meal prepped for the week, and you've implemented all the subtle changes that make the transition a little easier. Here are four tips designed to support your family's routines and ensure a successful school year for the entire family.
Healthy Electronic HabitsSmart kids require smart parenting. Like most kids, growing up I had a phone curfew during the week. The clock struck nine and that phone had to be in the base charging or else. No, I couldn’t finish my sentence and I couldn’t have five more minutes. So, what did I do? I’d say goodnight and go to my room. I would log on to AIM (aol’s instant messaging platform) where I would stay up and chat online with my friends until I had no more feeling in my fingers and wrists. Did I learn how to type faster than my thoughts? Absolutely. But I also suffered the next day in class when I struggled to stay awake. The point is, kids are always going to push boundaries or try and find ways around them. You don't want to create more work for yourself by collecting all the electronics each night. So, what can you do? For starters, most every gadget these days requires an internet connection. Start by getting a router that has parental controls where you can not only restrict certain sites but set daily guest passwords, prioritize traffic to specific devices, and pause internet connectivity at specific times. You can also limit the number of chargers they have access to or even allow them one full charge per day. I’m not at all against kids having cell phones or technology but I truly resent their growing dependency on them. I don’t know what your child’s electronic habits are but I do know that every family should have a balance that fits their needs. Find a reasonable limit, stick to it, and prepare for the push back on the boundaries you set.

Mental Health Check-insI recently came across a story about a teacher who created a weekly check-in board for her young students as a way of allowing them to express themselves and assess and manage their own mental health. The board has six category squares: "I’m great," "I’m okay," "I’m meh," "I’m struggling, " "I’m having a tough time, please check-in," and "I’m not doing so great." The teacher had the students write their name on the back of a post it note and place it in the square that corresponds with how they feel each Monday morning. Throughout the week, she checked in privately with each child about where they placed the sticky note and if they needed to talk. This is the type of mental health support we all need. Your teenager may not embrace a sticky board on the refrigerator as a way to express his or her feelings, they may need a more subtle way to let you know they are struggling. Think of a way that makes it easier for your child to 1) assess the way they feel, 2) take control of expressing it to you, and 3) managing it with your assistance. You can’t expect your child to do something if you aren’t willing to do it yourself, so be prepared to practice what you preach. It’s time to put on our courage capes and get a little vulnerable with each other.
The Power of AnticipationWhen the present starts to feel a little stressful, frustrating, or intimidating, a healthy sense of anticipation can help us get through tough times. Here’s my personal example. I think we can all agree that Mondays are the worst day of the week. Growing up, Mondays were dreadful and they just dragged from the time the alarm went off until my head hit the pillow. That is, until Mondays became our 7th Heaven night. My family would bake white chocolate macadamia nut cookies 30 minutes before showtime (remember, we didn’t have a DVR back then), serve four cold glasses of milk, and sit down on our couch with our blankets and fluffy socks as we watched the Camden family drama unfold. My Mondays went from dragging and being monotonous to being almost as good as Fridays. My school days went by faster and I made sure to get my homework done as soon as we got home. I even helped out around the house more. I had something to look forward to and that motivated me. The beginning of anything can be daunting, be it a new school, a new teacher, or a new class. Give your child small things to look forward to, pack them fun lunches, have a Netflix night on a Monday, have breakfast for dinner on Tuesdays, be random and fun! If your child is old enough, trust and delegate your vacation planning to them. A healthy sense of anticipation can energize your child's life and help get them through the monotony that usually drains them.
Have Get-TogethersYour child doesn't want you to call it a playdate anymore but don't let that confuse you, they still want to spend time with their friends. A get-together can be a great way for your child to catch up with their friends and minimize the distractions at school. When kids are young, we call them playdates and playdates are crucial for developing social skills. This is still true even if they outgrow the term used. Offer to turn your living room into Retail Row, where a couple of their friends can LANd (see what I did there) for a Fortnite Friday Battle Royal. Make up an excuse to go to the mall and offer to take them and a couple of their friends with you. Planning these activities is a creative way to help minimize the note passing in class or the excessive talking and distractions that end up as disciplinary actions. This is especially true after long summer breaks when friends haven’t seen each other all summer long.
“How we spend our days, is of course, how we spend our lives.” Starting a new school year intentionally doesn’t mean you’ll do everything perfectly. It means that you are designing your days, months, years, life to matter. That is the secret to a blissful school year.

New Year,New Habits| A Quick Guide to Setting Healthy Habits for the New School Year
Bet terv
T he beginning of the school year is much like every first day in January. The sense of a new beginning is often times received with excitement and anticipation,
making it the perfect time to establish family habits that can lead to a healthy (and happy) home. A new school year allows the opportunity to reset and revisit what works and doesn’t work for your family as you transition from a lazy summer break back into a demanding new school year. Start with your family’s nutrition and exercise routines, keeping in mind that they are comprised of decisions that are as personal as breastfeeding or being vegan. You should not feel suffocated when it comes to your family’s personal choices. Your private decisions should never be open to public curiosity or debate as this inevitably leads to shaming. Shaming is never the right way to encourage healthy habits and lifestyles. Instead establish healthy habits by planning, being patient and putting your efforts behind the right things. Here are a few ways to help you cut through all the noise when setting better habits intentionally.
Find What Sparks JoyI’m not going to suggest you use the Konmari Method and throw away everything in your pantry but I am going to ask you to declutter your mind from all those preconceived notions on health. Instead, try to define what “healthy” looks like for your family. A family that logs a lot of hours sitting during the week may choose to cut carbs in order to find balance, whereas a family who is very active

A Quality Christ-Centered, Education Starts Here
Many of our graduates began their educational journey at Westminster Academy in our preschool program—creating a strong foundation for them to be exceptional thinkers, learners, and leaders with a biblical and scholarly perspective for college and beyond.
Christian scholarship lies at the very core of Westminster Academy and has, since its founding in 1971, been a distinctive quality that has set WA apart from all other educational opportunities in South Florida. It demands the fusion of faith and intellect as we seek to understand God’s truth in both natural and supernatural revelation—the former being found in the created order of the world around us, and the latter being found in His written Word.
To learn more about all that Westminster Academy has to offer in Academics, Athletics, and the Arts, join us for a personal preview tour. Sign up at wa.edu/preview or call 954.771.4600, ext. 2529, to schedule yours today!
Westminster Academy is a Christ-centered, biblically-based college preparatory school dedicated to equipping covenant
students to excel by using their gifts and talents for God’s glory.

may find it necessary to carb load in order to refuel their bodies. Focus on a healthy design that fits your personality and excites you and your family. Once you find the joy in healthy living, behaviors stick and become lifestyles!
Long Term vs Short TermYou must evaluate whether you want and need rapid results or whether you are trying to create sustainable change. Are you trying to jumpstart healthy living or are you looking to adopt behaviors that you can stick to for the long haul? It is important to understand that every effort to get healthy is meaningful, but some changes help pave the way to better health more directly.
Small ShiftsSmall shifts lead to big changes. We often think of the big oak tree as always having been this big and majestic canopy of strength. The reality is that it too started out as a small nut. It went through daily changes over long periods of time before it became a source of food, shade, and protection. Just like the oak tree, you may not see the daily results but rest assured that transformation is happening. Small changes such as parking farther away or using the stairs instead of the elevator can turn into the catalyst that launches you into training for a marathon. Insignificant adjustments such as rearranging your refrigerator, can help you make healthier choices by keeping the leftover pizza less visible and accessible. Think about it, how many times have you thrown away a bag of spring mix salad because you couldn’t see it and forgot it was there? Ordering groceries online can be a game changer as well. It not only helps you avoid and resist temptations and impulse shopping, but it can save you time and money.
Over time, you can increase your efforts and enjoy the benefit of these small changes without feeling that the journey to health was a huge struggle. .

Phone, Wallet, Keys, and Life Skills. | Don't let them leave home without them
The hardest truth in parenting is that our kids will one day leave home. Some
parents are counting down the days while others can’t bare to even think about the impending separation.
The ideal moment to think about preparing your child for their solo f light is now—whether your child is 5 or 15. The key indicator that your child is ready to leave home is when your child begins to take ownership and initiative in their responsibilities, particularly within the areas of their health, their academics, and their chores and obligations.
While the desire to take ownership of their responsibilities cannot be taught, there are skills that you can begin teaching them now to boost their self-confidence. Most of the resistance parents encounter with responsibilities stems from fear of messing up and getting reprimanded. It is important to take the time to use visual and verbal instruction with children, always giving them a template to follow.
I knew an 18 year-old college freshman, that had decided she was going to apply for credit cards because she was finally old enough. One day she grabbed every application with promises of 0% interests and f lashy card designs and mailed them all out. She was proud of herself for taking initiative and figuring it out on her own. She waited patiently the next few weeks for that shiny plastic card to arrive in the mail, the one with her very own name that symbolized her independence. What she got instead was a hard lesson on how credit cards work. She didn’t just get letters denying her of all the credit lines she had been promised. She received letters from each bureau advising her that she had been f lagged for fraud and that her credit score had dropped. That 18 year-old college freshman was me.
Experience can be a great teacher but it is wise to avoid (and learn from) the missteps of others. I learned very early on just
452019 / PRIVATE SCHOOLS GUIDE l
46 47l PRIVATE SCHOOLS GUIDE / 2019 2019 / PRIVATE SCHOOLS GUIDE l
how hard it is to rebuild your credit. I was lucky enough that I learned that lesson without falling into mountains of debt at 18 simply because I didn’t have a clear understanding of debt and credit. It was not the last mistake I would make, but I can tell you that I avoided some serious hardships simply because I was taught certain life skills by my parents, teachers, and even coaches. Your child may already possess some of these skills, use these instead as a table reading to explore other areas that can help prepare your child for their grand exit.
Laundry| This is a common one, so I will skip over what happens when you mix whites and reds (spoiler alert: you get 50 shades of pink everything). Teach younger kids how to separate clothes by colors (and that clothes should be the only thing we separate by colors) and let them measure out the laundry detergent. If your child is old enough to learn how to fold a paper airplane, they are old enough to learn to fold a t-shirt and shorts. There is no reason laundry should fall on the lap of a single family member. If you have a teen who has already mastered folding fitted bedsheets, there are some other important things you may want to teach them when it comes to laundry. I worked as a claims adjuster for nearly 10 years and I cannot tell you how many dorm fires and f loods I dealt with. How many students lives were thrown into disarray during finals week because of a lint fire or an overloaded washer that f looded. The number one rule to instill in your kids is to never leave the washer or dryer on when no one is home or when they go to sleep. Appliances will eventually fail and catching a small puddle of water or smelling smoke can make a big difference. When using a washing machine, it is important that you know the max capacity of your machine and never exceed that limit. Make sure that the lint trap in the dryer is cleaned out regularly—and by regularly I mean after every use. If a dryer is getting too hot and damaging your clothes (i.e. melting jeans or bedding), make sure you get someone to check it out immediately. Lastly, your child should know where the water shut off is located both on the washer and in the home or dorm room. Teaching your child how to use appliances safely is as important as teaching them how to remove a ketchup stain.
Cooking| You should definitely take the time to teach them the basics of measuring such as the difference between a tablespoon and a teaspoon of salt. Teach your children a few family recipes and secrets too but don’t neglect the simple things like how to pick the ripe and ready to eat fruits or how to tell when pasta or rice is al dente (the ideal consistency). Teach them kitchen safety too. Don’t let them learn the hard way that you can’t put aluminum foil in the microwave or that you should never throw water on a grease fire. Always cut away from yourself and never throw bacon grease down the drain. Did you know that the bottom drawers of some ovens are NOT for storage but rather to broil food or keep it warm?
Effective Communication| Effectively being able to communicate is not only a vital skill but also a
learned skill. Teaching a child to express their needs and wants, while also considering the needs and desires of others, will help them interact with others and form strong relationships. While they should be learning the basics of sentence structure at school, make them apply what they are learning at home too. Texts and family group chats are a great opportunity to practice grammar and the dinner table can set the stage for practicing public speaking and active listening. Effective communication is more than just exchanging information, it is understanding the emotion and intention behind the information. It involves making eye contact, active listening, and empathetic feedback.
Health & Hygiene| Good hygiene starts at the tip of their head, ends between their toes, and includes every inch along the way. Most parents have great routines in place for brushing and f lossing, showers, and breakout control. There are, however, some aspects that have become second nature for adults that we forget to incorporate them into our children’s routines.
The worst part of parenting is having to trade in the baby breath for the body odor. One day you are sniffing your baby’s breath and the next you are running away pinching your nose. Normal? Absolutely! But still gross. Explain the changes they are going through and the differences between deodorant and antiperspirant. Deodorant masks the smell while antiperspirant stops perspiration. The ideal time to put on deodorant or antiperspirant is before you go to sleep as most are made to last at least 24 hours. Incorporating this into their nightly routine can also avoid forgetting in the morning during the mad rush out the door.
Having clean nails is as important as teaching your child the vanishing art of a good handshake. Both are critical elements of one's presentation and first impressions. Clean nails also play a vital role in the prevention of germs. Your nails should be cut about once every one to two weeks, and trimmed straight across to prevent from hang nails and ingrown nails.
Yearly physical exams are another important part of your child’s health care. As the parent, you’ve probably owned the responsibility of scheduling your child's appointments but what happens when your child goes off to college? Show your child how to schedule their own appointments. A lot of teens are fearful of having to make phone calls because they don’t know what to say. Put their health in their hands and emphasize the importance of these exams. They are a good chance for them to address important questions and issues that all teens will face such as drinking, smoking, sexual activity, drugs, and depression.
Part of the transition to adulthood is managing behavioral and mental health issues with oversight and some assistance. Whether they are issues with sleep, diet, procrastination or bouts of anxiety, children must be allowed to take personal ownership of these issues so they can learn to manage them effectively as adults. The best way to teach kids how to do this is by taking care of your own mental health and teaching them to develop healthy diet, sleep, and exercise habits.
Money Management| it is so much more than just saving and wise spending. Building credit can be a double-edged sword. Establishing good credit early on can set up your young adult to be self-sufficient, but failing to teach them the pitfalls of debt can leave them prisoners to lenders for years. The best way to prepare them is to walk them through the process, as complicated as it may seem. Explain how the three main bureaus function, warn them about identity theft and fraud, and remind them of how lenders make their money.
I look back at those simpler 1040EZ times and long for the days when that simple form felt overwhelming. This is still a bit
Continued >>>>
intimidating for me as an adult. Your teen will have to file their taxes as soon as they get their first job. What a better time to learn how to file their own taxes than when they most likely don't own any property and there's no need for fancy forms. Even if your accountant will be filing your family's taxes, it is a great teaching opportunity to have your child find and print the form. Sit down and walk them through where to find the information needed to fill out the form.
Driving| With GPS available in cars and on almost every smartphone, reading maps sometimes feels like an obsolete skill. Being able to understand geography and then route yourself accordingly is a safe practice and a vital skill to have, especially when data service is spotty or your phone's battery has died. Scavenger hunts, road trips, and using public transportation are good ways to introduce your children to maps.
If your child is going to drive a car one day, they must understand the basic maintenance of a car. Not just so that they don’t get taken advantage of when they go to get an oil change but so that they don’t accidentally put diesel in their gas engines. Show them where to find the owner’s manual, walk them through the process of changing a tire, and set up their phones to automatically enter do not disturb mode when they are driving.
It’s no secret, teens are the priciest drivers to insure. You may not want to leave coverage decisions up to your teens but you can give them the responsibility of shopping around for an inexpensive policy (even if you plan on adding them to your existing policy). This not only teaches them about how insurance works but also shows them what a bad decision could potentially cost your family. Teaching them about liability to others and how deductibles work may motivate them to keep their eyes on the road and to ignore that text message they just got.
48 l PRIVATE SCHOOLS GUIDE / 2019
The last important thing on the checklist is to have a plan in case of an accident. Your child should know who to call, what to say, and where to go in case they are left stranded on the side of the road and they can’t reach you.
Being Good Stewards| What is a steward? A steward is someone who manages something that does not belong to them. Your kids will go off to schools across the world one day and live in rented spaces with roommates. Being a good steward starts with taking care of borrowed things and spaces as if they were your own. Start now by talking to them about the cost of living. If you give your child an allowance, give your child a financial responsibility in the home as well. Most kids don’t understand that you have to pay for electricity and how it can f luctuate depending on usage. They may not listen to you when you are nagging them to turn off the lights but make them responsible for 10% of that bill and you may gain an ally in that fight. This not only gives them responsibilities in the home but it also prepares your children to have realistic expectations when they move out.
Being good stewards also extends to taking care of our environment. Teach kids about environmental stewardship by

Call today to see how we can make a difference in your child’s life!
putting them in charge of recycling or sustainable living and taking the Zero Waste Challenge as a family. Make it a big deal so that they too can embrace being part of keeping our planet clean. Teaching kids that their actions have a direct impact on their environment can help them understand the need to preserve and protect our environment.
Teach them to give freely. “Those who are the happiest, are those who do the most for others.” The idea of being good stewards by giving to others pushes kids away from the “give me” mentality and
teaches them to care about the world and other people. Teach them to be good stewards of their environment, their community and their spaces. Children can start small by giving of their time, money, and even talents.
As hard as the impending separation will be, the transition into adulthood really is one to look forward to ardently. To see your child evolve into a self-sufficient and consciously aware adult should be the gratifying culmination of all the years you poured into them. Their success is your success.

T H E G R E AT BOA RDING S C H O O L M Y T H| Just Another College Prep School
What is a college prep school? A college preparatory school is one that is primarily designed to prepare students for higher education, but isn’t that what every school should be doing? The term is so widely used
that it falls on parents to define what college readiness and college prep looks like for their child.
For some, college prep means that their child has earned college credits before they graduate high school or that by graduation, their child will have gone on college tours, written college essays, and have been accepted to a four-year college or university. For others, it could mean that their child is emotionally developing and maturing enough to be able to make their own decisions in college. It is up to each parent to define what college prep looks like for their child and then evaluate the schools performance and students to see if it fits their family.
In terms of college preparation, not all boarding schools or experiences are the same either. Each school is governed by their unique approach to education, their individual mission statements, and their distinct areas of learning and focus on individual character. At a true college preparatory boarding school, these are the concepts that put their future readiness, front and center.
1. They offer close alliances with students and teachers beyond just their experiences in the classroom, as students have 24-7 access to them.
2. They offer challenging or specialized academic and educational programs, which is part of their appeal for parents and students alike. Boarding schools have rigorous graduation requirements, just like a good prep school would. They will challenge and stretch students by exposing them to new ideas where their strengths will be expanded and where their weaknesses will be used as opportunities. Boarding schools are rigorous and demanding, often times students who are motivated by the challenge are overprepared when they get to college.
3. Boarding schools put your child in the company of other children who are highly motivated, who want to be the best, and who aspire to greatness due to their selective admissions and rigorous acceptance and graduation requirements.
4. Boarding schools educate the whole child with a balanced approach to academics, sports, extracurricular activities and socializing opportunities. This approach keeps them constantly engaged and is directly tied to their ability to learn independent living skills.
5. Your child will have a network of friends that literally stretches around the world. Students at boarding schools come from near and far with vast experiences, values and socioeconomic status unique to them. Living with their classmates will allow them to think and work collaboratively.
6. While the academic benefits of racial, cultural, and socioeconomic diversity are well established, the diversity provided by boarding schools also promotes tolerance, encourages cultural sensitivity, and increases social mobility. Boarding school students will make friends from around the world and this exposure to diverse environments, and the ideas and challenges they present, lead to improved cognitive skills, including critical thinking and problem solving, which are skills necessary for success in multicultural workplaces.
7. With the daily friction of living together removed, the separation paradoxically strengthens families, making children more self-reliant, self-confident and appreciative of their parents.
Parents should think beyond curriculum to the academic, social and emotional needs of their individual child. Think about their interests and goals and then look for a challenging curriculum that your student can handle to get them there. Include them in the decision making process regarding their education and make sure to visit the campus and speak with other students and parents.
