Two BPHS Students Earn Extra Effort Award From Steel Center

Two BPHS students who attend the Steel Center Area Vocational-Technical School received the Extra Effort Award for the second quarter of the 2013-2014 school year in recognition of outstanding attendance, theory work, shop work, work ethic and attitude.

Nate Ashton Named February Rotary Student Of The Month

Bethel Park High School senior Nate Ashton was named the February 2013 Bethel Park High School Student of the Month by the Rotary Club of Bethel Park in recognition of his leadership to coordinate and participate in numerous community service projects as part of his involvement with the BPHS Student Government Association and his mission trip work with his church. Each month the Rotary Club recognizes Bethel Park High School students who demonstrate exceptional commitment to school and community.

Grace Brueggman To Compete In FIRST Robotics World Championships In St. Louis

BPHS freshman Grace Brueggman will compete in the annual FIRST Robotics World Championships in St. Louis in April. She is a member of the “Girls of Steel” team, sponsored by Carnegie Mellon University. Grace’s team qualified for the World Championships by winning the Engineering Inspiration Award at the Pittsburgh Regional Robotics Competition, for designing and building a robot in six weeks that could effectively cooperate and compete with other robots in Ultimate Frisbee and

climb a pyramid structure.

Latin 1 Students Stage Play About

The Titans Vs. The Gods

Independence Middle School Latin 1 students staged a play, titled “The Myth” to finish out their unit of study on Roman theater.

The students wrote the script in Latin, made costumes and scenery, and performed a musical score to accompany the play about the Titans coming back from the dead to defeat the gods.

The Smart Cookies Win

15th Annual NAMS Battle of the Books

Nineteen teams competed in the 15th annual Neil Armstrong Middle School Battle of the Books. The students had to prepare for this competition by reading four assigned books.

NAMS Fifth Graders

Demonstrate Street Hockey Equipment For Penguins

Pre-Game Show

The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation filmed a group of Neil Armstrong Middle School fifth graders using the street hockey equipment the Foundation donated to all Bethel Park elementary and middle schools through the PensFIT Program.

The video was shown on the March 26 Penguins Pre-Game Show and throughout Pens vs. Canadiens game as part of a Charity Auction the Penguins were having to raise money to provide street hockey equipment to more schools in the Pittsburgh region.

This is the third time this group of students has been filmed by the Penguins because they do such a great job of demonstrating how much fun it is to play street hockey.

Memorial Second Graders Create PowerPoint

Presentations To Campaign To Be Principal For A Day

Memorial Second Graders in Mrs. Schall’s room were campaigning to be Principal for a Day, so they created five-slide PowerPoint presentations and gave oral presentations to their classmates and parents to entice them to vote for them to be Principal for a Day.

Some of the things the students promised, if they were Principal for a Day included:

• Installing a swimming pool and hot tub on the playground;

• Allowing students to bring their dogs to school;

• Installing trampoline material in the hallways to make it fun to bounce from class to class.

Carley O’Mara was elected to assist Mr. Chalus as Principal for a Day.

Benjamin Buehl Wins

Pens Tickets, Courtesy Of Metz Culinary Management

Memorial First Grader Benjamin Buehl won three tickets to a Pittsburgh Penguins game, thanks to a donation from Metz Culinary Management, the District’s Food Service Provider.

All Bethel Park students’ names were entered into a drawing, and Benjamin’s name was chosen.

This was his first Penguins game in person and he was excited to see his favorite player, Sidney Crosby.

Washington Students Use Their Recess Time To

Train For Kids’ Marathon

Over 200 Washington Elementary School students are members of the W.E. Run Club, which meets every Wednesday during recess to train for the upcoming Pittsburgh Kids’ Marathon.

Not only do the students run, but they also participate in a variety of cardio/fitness/stretching exercises, such as jumping rope, hula hoop, lunges and leg raises.

The slogan on the back of their shirt says it all—”W.E. Run, because it’s FUN!”

Clyde Qualk Named 2014 PA Teacher of

the Year Semi-Finalists

Bethel Park High School English Teacher Nicola Hipkins and Bethel Park High School Science Teacher Clyde Qualk are two of the 33 Semi-Finalists for the 2014 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year.

They will find out at the end of April if they have been selected as Finalists.

This is the second consecutive year Mr. Qualk has been named a Semi-Finalist and the first year for Mrs. Hipkins.

Mr. Qualk Featured In Tribune-Review Article

Bethel Park High School Physics Teacher Clyde Qualk was featured in a February 24 Tribune Review story about teachers who are incorporating technology into their classrooms to engage students in the learning process.

Athletic Director Named To WPIAL Board of

Control

Bethel Park Athletic Director Amy Scheuneman has been named “President Elect” of the WPIAL Athletic Directors Association for the years 2013-2014 and 2014-2015. After that, she will be President of the Association for the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 school years.

As “President Elect” she will represent the Athletic Directors on the WPIAL Board of Control.

Mrs. Scheuneman is the first woman to serve on the WPIAL Board of Control.

BPHS To Stage ‘42nd Street’

April 3-6

Bethel Park High School will stage “42nd Street” is its 2013 musical, Wednesday through Saturday, April 3-6 at 7:30 PM in the Bethel Park High School auditorium.

Tickets can be purchased at the door at a cost of $10 for Rows A-O and $8 for rows P-CC. Senior Citizens can get half price admission to the Wednesday and Thursday, April 3 and 4 performances. Students fourth grade and under can receive half price admission to all performances if the tickets are purchased at the door on performance evenings.

This will be the first musical to be staged in the new Bethel Park High School!
