one of the top congregations in raising funds. You should know: • Of all the Crop Walks in the Upper

Are you looking for a new church home?

On Sunday, October 16, from noon to 1:30 p.m., we will have Membership Matters, a time of information and discussion for people who are considering joining the Bethel community. You are invited to join the Bethel staff for a casual pizza lunch and an informative gathering about Bethel congregation, its mission and ministries, and our hopes and dreams for the future. You do not have to attend to join Bethel, but participation will help you decide if Bethel is the right congregation for you. Child care will be available.

Are You Looking for a Church Home?

Have you found a new church home?

Those who desire to join Bethel and new members who have recently joined, will be invited to participate in Affirmation of Baptism on Sunday, November 6, during the 10:45 a.m. worship service. This service will be followed by a delicious luncheon, hosted by Bethel’s New Member Team. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a member of Bethel, please contact Pam Santerre, Pastoral Minister at 786-8951.

School has nearly started, but that nice summer weather is still luring us outside for barbecues, boat rides, and relaxing on the patio. Take a few minutes for the conclusion of Pastor Tim's summer Bible reading: short passages from the Gospels that can be read on the back porch, in the canoe, or at the park. While you read,

consider two questions:

Who is Jesus calling us to be? What is Jesus calling us to do?

(If you'd like the entire reading list, look for the Bible study brochure at the welcome stations.)

Bible Journal reading list for September:

"Holding onto Summer" Bible Readings

• You know the critical need in the Horn of Africa. Church World Service (the CROP Walk organizer) is already at work “on the ground” in the Horn of Africa along with Lutheran World Relief in providing food, water, medical supplies, and shelter.

• The CROP Walk is an ecumenical, concerted effort to respond to the needs of others in the name of Christ.

Each year, the three congregations that raise the most funds for the Walk are awarded a traveling trophy: 1st place—the Golden Sneaker, 2nd place—The Silver Sock, and 3rd place---The Bronze Boot. You know what? It would be great to be presented one of those three awards! Watch for the CROP Walk display, plan now to get your family and other members or friends to be part of the 2011 Walk. We need some initial volunteers to help us plan and rally walkers for the 25th! Willing to help and walk? Let Paula know at the office or call Clark Cary. Hey! Let's go for the Gold!!!!!

Friends in Christ, I’d like to pose a question to you, and I promise you won’t receive any demerits for how you answer it. Here goes…. How well do you know the Bible?

I wanted to give you assurance before you answered because you’re not alone if this question makes you feel a bit uneasy! Not long ago I heard a statistic which claimed that a strikingly small percentage of church members (less than 10%) have a decent familiarity with the book of faith. I have to confess, even as a pastor, my response to the question is usually either, “Not as well as I’d like to”, or “not as well as I probably should.” After all, even for people with good training and familiarity, the Bible can be a strange, difficult, and even a tedious piece to dive into, yet for the Christian faith, its witness and story are so central. So, if it’s sometimes difficult, but believers agree that it is so important and influential for a life of faith, and most of us would really like to be a bit more familiar with Scripture, what can

we do and where can we go for help? Here are a few things that have helped me, and a few places and options you might try over the coming months. Start by getting it in your hands. There is a cart full of quite new Bibles at here at church just outside the Fireside Room. You might even find it outside the sanctuary on Sundays. Grab one before worship and find the readings for the day in the actual Bible rather than the bulletin. It’s good practice for learning where certain books of the Bible are located, and a simple way to get it in your hands. Leave one in your desk at work or on the kitchen table and start the day with a short read. Ask questions and converse with others. Deep learning happens with and from one another. There are many ways for you to engage in this at Bethel. Sit in on Pastor Tim’s Mathetes class for a deep look into scripture passages (Sundays, 9:45-10:30 a.m.), join the Bethel Bible series, start or connect with a small devotional group, or just plain talk to people about it. Starting in October I’ll be leading a fun book study entitled

Making Sense of Scripture focusing on big questions about the Bible such as, “What is it?”, “Is it true?”, and “How do I understand it better?” (Wednesdays, 4:30-5:30 p.m.) Start simple and make it fun. With that Bible in your desk at work, or on the kitchen table, read a Psalm each morning. Maybe you’ve been reading through Pastor Tim’s suggested summer Gospel readings. Keep it going with Acts, Romans, and 1 and 2 Corinthians. Sign up for an online devotional to be emailed to you each day. I like one called God Pause (www.luthersem.edu/godpause). Luther Seminary has a nice website called Enter the Bible with summaries of the books of the Bible, maps, and brief commentaries on various scripture passages (www.enterthebible.org). There’s an ELCA sponsored website called Book of Faith (www.bookof-faith.org) which has many resources including a great Bible quiz. Test your knowledge in a fun way and learn a bit too. When you miss one, look it up, and read the coinciding story. See how many you can get correct (I was 8 for 10)! The main thing is, though it might be difficult, confusing, and maybe even tedious at times, there’s a great story of faith and God’s promises to people in Christ waiting to be encountered there, and I’m confident that though you may be challenged or confused at times, as you engage it more you’ll find your faith enriched and the story of your life in its pages as well. Peace to you,

From the Associate Pastor...

Bethel’s Annual Backpacking/Camping Trip Warm up your hiking boots and be a part of the annual backpacking and camping trip! Last year, the 100-year (we hope!) rain flooded out our trip. This year, we will head to Savannah Portage State Park for day-hiking and camping, with a backpacking option for those who are interested. The trip takes place the weekend after Rally Day - September 22-25 - leaving at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday and arriving home in the early evening on Sunday. If you are interested in learning more about the trip, sign up at the information table or contact the church office. Signing up does not commit you to the trip, but it will get you in the loop for more information. Please join us — all Bethelites ages 16 and older are welcome. The more the merrier!

Attention Bethel Bicyclists Be sure to use our handy dandy bike racks on the south side of the admin wing when parking your bikes at Bethel - Thanks!

As I write this, WELCA has just finished our summer Bible

study retreat. Fifteen women enjoyed a wonderful day of study and fellowship. Thank you, thank you to Barb Holm for leading us in such an inspirational journey. Also many thanks to Trudy Breitag for her fine piano playing and to the WELCA board for serving our lunch. FYI - Our garage sale tithe was given to two benevolences. $360 was given to Operation Backpack to provide backpacks for children from Northfield who are in need and $1,000 was donated to the ELCA Disaster Relief Fund for all of the natural disasters that have happened this year. The rest of the proceeds are going to be spent giving the Fireside Room a needed update to make it more user-friendly and streamlined. Thanks again for all you give and do to make this project a success. Looking ahead we are now anticipating our new Bible study which begins with our September circle meetings. Our theme is "To Follow and To Serve": The Gospel of Mark. Barb Holm will once again be leading our September meetings to get us off to a good start. The theme verse is "Take heart, get up, Jesus is calling you". Hope you hear the call and become active in a circle this year. Our new handbooks for 2011-2012 are now available on the information table. This is your helpful and handy guide to WELCA

Thank you for all that you give! During the same week in August our Grade 1-5 students joined children from Emmaus, Rejoice!, and St. John‘s and the entire Northfield community for a day camp experience led by Good Earth Village Bible Camp held at St. John’s. All reports were outstanding and 127 children attended. I hope all of our wonderful Bethel nursery families had a relaxing summer, enjoying time with

each other. We are busy getting back into the swing of things and are excited to see all of the sweet smiling faces of our little lambs on Sunday mornings. New to the nursery this fall.... On Sunday mornings, during the Sunday School hour, we will be offering a Bible story, project, and music time to our "older" toddlers in the nursery that haven't quite hit Sunday School age.

Coming Soon.... The very popular "Parents Night Out" will be returning this fall to the nursery. Date to be determined, more information to follow. Just a reminder... Nursery is available during BAM and other Wednesday night activities. Help all Northfield's kids be

Learning Superheroes! Northfield's low-income students have trailed their peers in average reading and math proficiency by more than 25% over the last 5 years. And this group is growing: almost 1/3 of Northfield's elementary students now receive free or reduced-price lunches, a 50% increase since 2004. Research shows that mastering reading by 3rd grade is key to lifelong success. Northfield elementary schools are starting a new volunteer program to close the achievement gap and we need YOU. Help all our kids launch for a life as learning superheroes! There are three ways you can help:

• Intensive one-on-one tutoring - 30 minutes 3-5 times per week

• Read aloud - listen to kids read 30-60 minutes 1-3 times per week • Enrichment challenge - help students who need an extra challenge so teachers

can focus on those in the gap - 60 minutes per week for at least four weeks. Contact Abbie Meierbachtol or [email protected] (or 664-3524) for more information or to volunteer.

What is relaxed for one may be boring to another; what is frenetic for one is exciting and energizing for the next person. Psalm 90 gives us words of wisdom for our calendar planning:

9 For all our days pass away . . . our years come to an end like a sigh. 10 The days of our life are seventy years, or perhaps eighty, if we are strong . . . they are soon gone, and we fly away. 12 So teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart.

“Teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart.” Good words to

Are you ready? Yes, fall is quickly coming, and soon we’ll be back into a more scheduled routine. My hope is that your families have had time to rest, to relax, to rejuvenate during these summer months, that you’ve had time to while away at least a few hours without the usual responsibilities, expectations, and appointments. God gave us Sabbath rest for a reason – to remember our relationship with our God and because we need it! For most of us, though, there is some comfort in coming back to the rhythm of a routine after a summer with less of it. And I believe God prescribes that as well. There’s a security in knowing what to expect in our days and in our weeks. It’s up to us to determine whether the cadence of our days will be

keep in mind as we begin a new school year. In Bethel’s Senior Stepping Stones retreats, we intentionally take time to look back, to appreciate the present, and to then look ahead at the future. This is a good exercise for all of us when we plan our schedules. It reminds us of our priorities and helps us say yes or no to the many great opportunities that present themselves to us. So, as we look ahead at a new school year, may we all take a breath. May we look back, appreciate what is now, and look ahead. And may we all count our days and use and schedule them to gain a wise heart.

From the Scrip Table... Now that the 2011 youth trips are past, we want to remind everyone that it is not too early to work on your 2012 trip accounts! The trips start at $493 for the eighth grade trip to Minneapolis and increase in cost from there. Scrip uses the dollars you are spending anyway for groceries, gas, birthday meals, and back-to-school shopping and stretches them toward your youth or other mission trip. Any family with youth in grades six and up can start a youth trip account; any family planning any mission trip with ISLA, to the Indian reservation, Haiti, India, or wherever can start a Scrip account to earn money toward your trip. As always, Scrip is available to all Bethel members, friends and relatives so even if your children are too young or too old to participate in Bethel's youth trips, your purchases of Scrip help grow the scholarship fund to aid in decreasing the trip costs for all. With that we offer many, many thanks to those faithful Scrip supporters whose purchases have provided scholarships to our youth who have seen the face and hands of God in Minneapolis, in the mountains at Christikon, and at Flathead Lake Bible Camp.

This ministry can be compared to the Befrienders ministry, but it is specifically designed for Bethel youth. Come hear more about wePOD on Rally Day! HS Summer Trip Informational Meeting ~ Believe it or not, we’re already looking ahead to summer 2012! I know, most of us are still basking in the glow of summer 2011 and working hard to get organized again. But registration is early for the ELCA Youth Gathering so we’ll be meeting earlier than usual. 2011-12 high school youth in grades 10 – 12, please plan to attend an informational meeting for next summer’s trip to New Orleans at 7 p.m. on Monday, September 19, in the Youth Center. 6th Grade Connections begins on Wednesday, September 21. All 6th grade youth are invited to join us in the Youth Center at 7 p.m. A parent planning team meeting will be held in room #61A that same evening at 6:30 p.m.

Parents will be asked to join us at 1:45 for a short wrap-up. Details will be sent in the mail; parents, please contact Barb Farmer if you are able to help make and serve lunch or lead activities. Rally Sunday is September 18! All Sunday education classes will start this Sunday at 9:45 a.m. Further class information will be sent to all families at the beginning of September. Please plan to join our Bethel families at the Rally Day Festival following the 10:45 worship as we celebrate our return to our fall programming schedule. wePOD Kick-off! wePOD will be having a “short but sweet” kick-off meeting at noon on Rally Sunday, September 18, for those who are currently PODers and any who are interested in learning more about this ministry. The group will begin in the Youth Center and then move to the Rally Day Festival to eat. wePOD is a ministry of high school youth (9th - 12th grades) who have a passion for helping others and “being there” for people.

Highlights of the July Church Council Meeting The Trustee is working with Excel Energy on an audit to see where we might save money. He is also working on a meter in our retention pond and a new security camera has been installed and is recording all door activity. The Personnel Officer and his committee are reviewing comp time issues as well as setting up a format for employee reviews. The Treasurer reported that income and expenses are looking good for the first half of the year. Income has increased over last year and is $8,000 behind expenses, which is normal for this time of year. The building fund is in great shape and $20,000 was prepaid on the principal of the building loan. The Steward reported that they are working on the Fall stewardship campaign. The Finance 101 course is moving forward and Pam Santerre will be scheduling this as part of the Adult Education line-up for the Fall. The Monitor Task Force presented their suggestions for a policy on monitor guidelines and usage. The Council asked that they change the language and turn this document into an official policy with their approval in all areas. The Baptismal Font project is still in process. A draft of a new Facility Usage Policy was presented to Council. A few changes were made and the policy was approved. That policy is now in effect. A V Room Management was discussed and a task force was formed to address this area. They will report back at the August meeting.

worship services. At this time when local, national, and international food needs are critical, let’s make a goal to have more walkers and more sponsors than ever before! See you on the Walk!

Creation Care Tip: As your kids head back to school, take this opportunity to teach them to be responsible with

resources. Re-use school supplies that are in good condition. It’s easy to forget about all the items you already have at home that are still in good working condition. Binders, loose leaf paper, pencils, and scissors are often only lightly used. Save money and resources by buying only what’s really needed! If you don’t have use for your old supplies, donate them to your school or daycare.

At our first forum on October 2, Amy Hartman, national director of Cherish Our Children, will speak between services. Her organization is a congregation-based ministry of prayer, education, relationship-building, and action to implement the ELCA Message on Commercial Sexual Exploitation. This ministry is an affiliate of the ELCA. Mark October 2 on your calendar; you will not want to miss this forum. But first…

We have a major event in September. Let’s go all out for the CROP Walk on September 25! Whether or not you have participated before, this is the year to get involved. Sponsor walkers, walk yourself, or do both! You will have opportunities to sign up and to donate on Sundays in September between

The Mission and Justice Committee, as its name

implies, is a committee whose function is to identify important issues in the world and offer learning experiences to increase our awareness of these issues. Whenever possible, the Mission and Justice Committee offers ways for Bethelites to plug into action that makes a difference locally, nationally, and internationally. This year, our main focus of study is Human Trafficking/Slavery. This is a shockingly relevant topic to all Americans and to all Christians. Did you know that: • In the U.S. one person is sold into

slavery every ten minutes? • Around the world, a victim is

exploited every minute? • Each year, more than one million

children are used in the commercial sex trade?

• More slaves are alive now than any other time in history?

• Modern slaves are used in labor (jobs in agriculture, restaurant, textiles, etc.) and in the sex trade?

• An estimated 27 million (some estimates say more than 30 million) people are in slavery worldwide today, meaning there are more slaves in the world now than were taken from Africa during the 300 years of the transatlantic slave trade?

We do not realize the extent of modern day slavery, and our ignorance may contribute to its continuation. We believe we must increase our awareness of the scope of slavery, and, if possible, make contributions to its elimination. Getting informed is the first step.

From the Mission and Justice Committee Vision Statement: Since we believe that service is both an obligation and a privilege of the Christian life,

we seek to provide opportunities for Bethel members to learn about the needs of others in our world and to put their knowledge into action, heeding Christ's call to "Love your neighbor as yourself."

Volunteers Desperately Needed in Minot In late June, record flooding devastated the city of Minot, North Dakota, forcing nearly a third of the residents to evacuate and leaving more than 4,000 homes and businesses heavily damaged. Pastor Tim and his family drove through Minot on their recent vacation and witnessed firsthand the blocks and blocks of homes stripped to the studs, the many acres of land still under water just outside of the city limits, the buildings still waiting to be demolished, and the many campgrounds filled with displaced families living in trailers. Local residents have been hard at work, but the task is too much for local volunteers alone. As Lutherans, we're experts at rolling up our sleeves when there is a need, and our sisters and brothers in Minot need our help now. The goal is to have as many flood-damaged homes gutted as possible before the first major snowfall, which could be less than three months away. This is an all-call for volunteers from around the country. Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota has set-up a volunteer hotline, and anyone interested in helping should call 218-443-4970 to register. You can also visit www.lssnd.org to find volunteer registration forms and other important information about volunteering. If someone would like to lead a group from Bethel, please contact the office.

one might ask, 'Why the ELCA Malaria Campaign?'". The ELCA Malaria Campaign is a major fundraising effort of the church under the auspices of ELCA World Hunger. The assembly recommended that the campaign be developed to complement efforts of ELCA World Hunger "to achieve and grow" beyond its own annual goals.

together, so we find malaria more prevalent where poverty and hunger are evident. That's where our relationship can make a difference. We stand beside (and partner with) those who suffer with malaria, those who are hungry, (and) those who live in poverty. ELCA members also seek to partner with African Lutheran companion churches in bringing healing and justice to our world. It is Lutheran relationships of accompaniment that bring us to this moment of launching the ELCA Malaria Campaign. The world is calling us together, to this moment, to this effort, because of our relationships -- church to church, people to God," Andrea DeGroot-Nesdahl said. The Rev. Daniel Rift, director of ELCA World Hunger, told the assembly that the campaign will help Lutheran churches in 11 countries in Africa. "Malaria is not something to which a child should be resigned," Rift told the assembly. "We can do better than that -- as a church and as a people. For me, that is the image I'll take with me when

[The following press release was issued from Orlando, the site of the ELCA Churchwide Assembly.] Every 45 seconds a child dies from malaria, a preventable and treatable disease. Now the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) will join with Lutheran churches in Africa, to work toward a malaria-free future. This effort is part of the ELCA Malaria Campaign, officially launched by the ELCA Churchwide Assembly on August 15 by a 968-19 vote. A goal of the campaign is to raise $15 million over a four-year period. "Throughout our life as the ELCA, we have focused our work with our global partners around the concept of accompaniment, our relationships with companion churches all over the world," said the Rev. Andrea DeGroot-Nesdahl as she introduced the campaign to voting members. DeGroot-Nesdahl is the campaign's coordinator. "Poverty, hunger, disease — they all go

LPGM Minute for Mission The Library Program of the Arcot Lutheran Church School Project in South India which LPGM supports is changing communities. It has received notable appreciation from the education authorities of the Government of Tamil Nadu because its activity-based library model creates a great impact on the children and their families.

Now many of these school libraries are becoming community libraries. Please remember the dedicated teachers, who are embracing innovative ways when working through the library, in your prayers as they work to improve the reading skills of their students which will not only enhance their education but also their life! Bethel Bible Series, the Old Testament, Wednesdays mornings, 10-11:15 a.m., first session September 21 - December 7; second session - February 1 - May 2, 2012 The Bethel Bible series is a time-tested, two-year, intentional overview of the Bible that helps students understand the lessons of the Bible by first understanding the historical and cultural context in which it was written. Students are asked to prepare for each class session by reading the curriculum materials and assigned Bible passages. There will be no memorization or tests - just fellowship and open discussion of the concepts

presented. If you are just beginning to dive into the Bible or are a seasoned biblical scholar, please consider joining us for this exciting overview of God's Word. The study will be led by Kris and Caryl Vohs. For more information or to register, contact Kris or Caryl at 645-6009. “Being a class member in Bethel Bible Series was such a delight. Learning from the Bible, others

sharing their thoughts, and the accepting and encouraging spirit of our gracious leaders, Caryl and Kris, made it a great experience.” Trudy Breitag Making Sense of Scripture (book study), Wednesdays, October 5 – November 23, 4:30–5:30 p.m., Bethel Classroom 62 Ever had big questions about the Bible like, "What is it?", "Is it true?", "How is it God's word?", or "How can I understand it better?" In my faith journey, one verse that has given me encouragement is Romans 8:28:

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

There have been times and circumstances in my life when it’s difficult or even impossible to understand what good could possibly come from a particular ‘thing’ that has happened in my life. This verse gives me the faith and hope that in God’s time and grace, even ‘this thing’, however hurtful or senseless, will be redeemed by God. PTL!

In The Freedom of a Christian, Martin Luther says, “Just as the heated iron glows like fire because of the union of fire with it, so the Word

imparts its qualities to the soul.” Martin Luther believed that Scripture is the bedrock of our Christian faith, indeed without God’s Word we cannot claim faith in God! So, what qualities has God’s Word in Scripture imparted to your soul? How has it become your living faith?? In the coming months, I invite you to share with us the Bible verses that are/have been precious to you on your faith journey. Is there a verse or two, or perhaps a Bible story that sustains you in your walk with God or has sustained you at a particular time in the past? Please email me at [email protected] or send me your verse plus a paragraph that tell us something of how this verse has sustained you.

Pastoral Care At Bethel, we teach, preach, and live the truth that every one of us is loved, valued, and belongs. Our pastoral care team and supporting ministries, such as Befrienders, prayer ministry, home communion, etc., provide care that is confidential, Christ-focused, and spiritual. We desire to be connected to you while you are experiencing peaks and valleys in your walk with Christ. Through the good times as well as through the tough ones, whatever your circumstances, Bethel is a loving family that wants to share God’s love for you. Please contact us by phone if you desire pastoral care. If You Are In the Hospital…. Bethel's pastoral staff would like to be there for you when you are admitted to the hospital or other facility for illness or surgery, but due to privacy regulations, we do not get a call from the hospital when you are admitted. If you would like a pastoral care provider to visit you, please be sure that someone — you or a family member or a friend — calls the Bethel office to let us know of your admission. Thank you for the privilege of sharing the presence of Christ with you in your time of need. Tim McDermott and Charlie Ruud, Pastors, 786-6674 and Pam Santerre, Pastoral Minister, 786-8951

The book, Heaven is for Real, is a little boy’s astounding story of his trip to heaven and back. It is a #1 New York Times Bestseller and now it is on the shelf in the Bethel Library.

“Compelling and convincing. It’s a book you should read.” – Don Piper, author of 90 Minutes in Heaven. “A beautifully written glimpse into heaven that will encourage those who doubt and thrill those who believe.” – Ron hall, coauthor of Same Kind of Different as Me. “Do you remember the hospital, Colton?” Sonja said. “Yes, Mommy, I remember,” he said. “That’s where the angels sang to me.” When Colton Burpo made it through an emergency appendectomy, his family was overjoyed at his miraculous survival. What they weren’t expecting, though, was the story that emerged in the months that followed; a story as beautiful as it was extraordinary, detailing their little boy’s trip to heaven and back. Colton, not yet four years old, told his parents he left his body during the surgery and authenticated that claim by describing exactly what his parents were doing in another part of the hospital while he was being operated on. He talked of visiting heaven and relayed stories told to him by people he met there whom he had never met in life, sharing events that happened even before he was born. He also astonished his parents with descriptions and obscure details about heaven that matched the Bible exactly, though he had not yet learned to read. With disarming innocence and the plainspoken boldness of a child, Colton tells of meeting long-departed family

Celebration, continued on Page 24.

In August, Bethel kids who have participated in summer trips share their stories with us - and wash our cars! Here are three of those stories: Good morning! I am Jackson Schuerman, one of the 8th grader students who attended the mission trip in July. I am here today to tell you about our trip to Minneapolis, how we served the people and how it affected my faith. Twenty-four eighth graders and six adults traveled to downtown Minneapolis and stayed at the Elim Baptist church in the northeast part of town. We broke into five groups and spent the week serving different populations. Some of the different places where other groups worked were: Youth Enterprise, Handy Works, Marie Sandvik Center, and Hidden Treasure Thrift Store. I was lucky enough to work at two different places each day. My group spent the morning at Bethany Covenant Retirement home. There we worked with elderly people and heard a lot of their life stories and received advice from the patients. It was fun to get to know so many of the patients! One memory from our work there is on the last day we played balloon volleyball, and one patient did not want to play. We worked hard to convince her to play and when she finally did, she ended up to be the best player! Another patient told us about her life when she was twenty and moved to New York City – all alone. She told us of her adventures and how thrilling her life felt at that point. One of my favorite patients was named Hosie. Hosie turned 80 the week after we left. He told my friend and I all about his life and advised us to stay in school and to stay away from drugs. The

connections we made with the people at the Retirement Center made a lasting impression on me and I realized that serving as a Christian person can be as easy as listening to someone talk about their life. After lunch, we drove over to the Hospitality House. The Hospitality House is basically a place where kids go when their home life isn’t very safe or good. Right when we arrived, we went outside to play with the kids, who were mostly elementary-age kids although there were a few who were our age. The boys in our group played football with the kids while the girls played on the playground with the really little kids. Football was fun although there were some interesting rules! For instance: if you scored a touchdown but didn’t do a celebration dance, it didn’t count. Another one was that if you whined or complained, you had to sit out. All rules were enforced by the adults who worked there. After playtime we would go inside for worship time. The woman in charge of worship was named Michelle, and all the kids loved her. One boy I met was named Ramón. He was the best behaved out of all the kids. He never interrupted Michelle or talked during Bible verse time. After worship, we would do stations with all the kids, And that was when it became chaotic! We worked in the game room and the games we played were Monopoly, a Whack-the-Mole type game, Jenga, and Memory. The kids in the game room were 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders, and there were 12 of them. While playing Monopoly, the kids would steal the money from the bank!

Celebration Sunday Faith Statements During Whack-a-Mole, they hit each other and everything else with the hammers. They did pretty well with Jenga, and they got bored with Memory. One of the boys we met while working in the game room was named M.J. He was 7 years old, had dreadlocks, and was one of the coolest and most energetic second graders I have ever met! He said he knew how to play Monopoly, but when he only got one 500 dollar bill, he stole another boy’s money. After he had taken all the other boy’s money, he then stole all the money in the bank! He then gave it to his friend named Shon and then Shon threw it all over the room! It was super fun to interact with these kids and it was hard to say goodbye. It was a powerful experience to play with, worship with, and praise God with kids who didn’t seem to have a lot of reason to praise the Lord. We returned to Elim Baptist Church for dinner, and after dinner we had evening activities. One of our evening activities was to serve a meal at Loaves and Fishes. It felt good to provide food to people that needed it, but it was kind of scary at the same time. I felt intimidated by some of the people that came through because they were homeless and in great need and that is something we are not used to seeing. At the end of the night we had Club. Club was a church service put on by the Youth Works people. The theme of this year’s trip was “Be Different” so that was the topic of our service each night. Jonathan, the leader, told us a story each night of how people are

of the wedding, and I had to miss being with my family on a very special day. I didn’t have much time to get caught up in the festivities because I realized I had forgotten regular shoes, and I was not about to wear high heels onto the bus. I sprinted around asking people for shoes and was finally offered some flip flops. Without being able to say a proper goodbye, we were off to camp. I couldn’t help feeling a bit of regret and uncertainty as we pulled away from the church. We arrived at camp, and I immediately felt out of my comfort zone. I was still doubtful of the experience everyone had carried on about. But as the week progressed, I began to understand the connection with your friends and with God that you make on the trip.

A day on the trip I really felt God’s presence was the third day of hiking. We were going to hike uphill eight miles, peak the mountain, and walk all the way to our new campsite. Peaking Shale Mountain was breathtaking, but our counselors were not always truthful about how far we really had to go. We quickly learned that “just over that ridge” did not mean we were close to our campsite. We were soon tired and crabby, and just when we thought it couldn’t get any worse, it started pouring. Then we realized it wasn’t pouring: it was hailing. We were told to keep hiking, or we would not be able to eat dinner. It seemed we were never going to reach our campsite, but just as we were about to give up, a rainbow peaked through the clouds. It felt like God was encouraging us the rest of the way, even though we were exhausted and irritable.

Christikon not only challenged my physical strength, but also my mental strength, and my relationship with God. It pushes away all distractions that may be occurring in your life, and places in front of you a chance to form

trying to “Be Different”. He told us a story about how when his mom was very sick with cancer, one night the doctor decided to take her off of her pain medication and when Jonathon’s dad came the next day he forgave the doctor for putting his wife through lots of pain even though he was very mad. He said that is a very good example of reacting differently. On the last night he read the Bible story about Jesus washing the disciple’s feet. A leader washing the feet of his followers was very different! After that, the adults washed the feet of all the 8th graders and prayed for us. It was a different and very powerful experience to have adults serving kids and one that I will never forget. The eighth grade mission was an unforgettable experience and I will never forget the people I met while serving the Lord. On behalf of all the people that attended the mission trip, I would like to thank you, Bethel members, for supporting us financially, and through your prayers. Hi, my name is Abby Stets and I went to Christikon this summer. Leading up to the trip I heard many amazing stories and adventures people had experienced. I learned early that I would be missing the reception at my cousin’s wedding, which was very disappointing, but I was assured that the experience at Christikon was once in a lifetime.

I sat in the wedding unable to sit still. I constantly asked my sister the time, to make sure I hadn’t missed the bus or wouldn’t have enough time to change. 5:30 arrived and I quickly made my way out of the church, but not before being scolded by a man for leaving in the middle of the service. I made my way out into the narthex in my T-shirt and shorts for the bus, and I looked around only to feel a wave of sadness hit me. My family was so excited to be a part

Celebration Sunday, continued from page 23. a stronger bond with God. He worked through everything and everyone to appear to us, and I constantly felt his presence. The beautiful landscape and the people surrounding me made the trip one of the most exciting things I have ever done. I returned home with new knowledge about myself, and my connection with God. Hello, my name is Sonia Berdahl and this summer I attended the trip to Flathead Lutheran Bible Camp. In the last week of June, Bethel sophomores, juniors, and seniors drove twenty-six hours straight to Flathead Lake in Lakeside, Montana. We were looking forward to a week filled with kayaking, a high ropes course, sailing, and white water rafting with all of our great Bethel friends. Of course we’d have some “God talk” here and there, but this trip was all about adventure. And an adventure we got. We kayaked to an island with a haunted past and had a couple scares while sleeping in the cherry orchard. We clung for our lives to swinging ropes, extremely high up in the trees, which led to aching arms, legs, and rope burns for days! In forty-five minutes, we completed a white water rafting course that should have taken two hours, but the water was so high, we moved at a much faster and thrilling pace. The day that my group went sailing, we had great sailing winds. Of course that could only mean one thing — a storm was coming. Right as we reached Wild Horse Island where we would be staying, it started to downpour. Perry [Tetreault], Juley [Jenkinson], and I quickly scrambled into the cabin so we wouldn’t get drenched while the other members of our group had to brave out the storm in order to drop the first anchor from their boat. After having wimped out the first time, I hopped

As the summer draws to a close, we think about getting into our fall routines. There’s Bistro and

choir practice, Sunday school, and Wednesday youth activities. As Bethel changes and grows, new opportunities are offered and some are retired. These transitions reflect the ever-changing needs of the congregation. Just as Bethel members experience growth and change, the Bethel Befriender ministry is also changing. This fall we will discontinue our monthly meetings and hold one fall meeting. It will be held on Thursday, September 29th at 7 p.m. in the Fireside Room. Pastor Tim McDermott will be our guest speaker. This special training meeting is entitled “Befriending at Bethel” and will include training on linking at Bethel and healthy Befriender boundaries. All active Befriender ministers are urged to attend.

not really connecting to any specific type of prayer and found myself praying for the exact same thing again and again. Finally about halfway through, I reached the station where the instructions were to simply listen to what God had to say. Every time your brain wandered, you were to say a word that would bring you back to God. The word that I chose was grace. I started out a bit shaky and my mind wandered a couple of times. God didn’t come right out and say, “Hey Sonia, here is how I want you to live your life.” So I tried opening my eyes and instantly I realized why God had sent the storm. The overlapping clouds were all

into a little plastic dinghy to drop the second anchor out into the choppy waters. That mini-adventure left me feeling soaked and accomplished. Finally on the island, we made our way through the trails, heading to the place where we were going to try a new thing called a prayer walk. A prayer walk has stations that you rotate through, each with a different kind of prayer for you to try. This particular prayer walk had nine stations. As we were nearing our destination, the rain decided to hit us one last time, just to make sure there were no dry spots left. Hungry, soaked, and really wanting to change clothes, we set off for our first prayer walk station. At first, I was

I started to think about the way that I treat people and how I want to dedicate my life to serving others. Then I realized that this is the way God speaks to us. We have to put away all the distractions that keep those thoughts from having the opportunity to surface. With a week away from my cell phone, Facebook, TV, etc., I finally figured out how to hear God. Our so-called conveniences sometimes hinder our ability to find peace. I encourage everyone, sometime this week or the next, to leave your computer off for the day or accidently lose your cell phone for a couple hours,

"Meet" Bethel's Seminarian! Many of us have noticed that Don and Diane Kloster, Bethel members for nearly four decades, have not been seen around Bethel regularly these days. Do we need to reach out to them and encourage them to make regular worship a part of their lives? Perhaps have Pastor Tim or Pastor Charlie call to make sure that everything is all right? On the contrary! Read what Don has to say about their extraordinary journey: Bethel has been our home in so many ways, for a very long time. We are missing our friends – family – our home. We are off on an adventure that began in my teen years when, during bedtime prayers, I felt God asking for help in loving and leading people to a better understanding of His love for us. This became a daily discussion with me saying, "Too shy, can’t speak in public, not smart enough, not tall enough, don’t fit the image," – and many more objections. God saying, “I think that I might be able to be handle those deficiencies.” I remember finally agreeing to do what I could with God’s help. My first year out of high school, I attended Luther College. It was there that, for many reasons, I came to believe my “Call” had been misunderstood. I left Luther, graduated from Wisconsin – LaCrosse and married Diane while in college. We were blessed with four wonderful daughters, and I became involved in my other passion – aviation. I enjoyed an airfreight transportation business for 35 years. All during this rewarding and blessed life, the gentle call from God was never silent. Diane and I had many discussions about what our future might involve. It took a few years to leave the company, as letting go of my "previous life" was not easy, but the best part about leaving was the opportunity to “make myself available” (Pastor Tim’s words) for whatever God might have in mind.

Since becoming “available”, opportunities have been opening in front of me with no small amount of help from God. It seems like I blindly take a step forward and door after door flies open in front of me. One of those doors was the discovery of the TEEM program. Theological Education for Emerging Ministries is a very small alternate course of study approved by the ELCA as a method of training potential pastors. In my case the educational component is different. Some would call it experimental; some would say it was exactly the method used to train pastors when our ancestors arrived here. I would call it the future, a vanguard program that will definitely share a piece of the future of seminary training. The TEEM program includes classes similar to those for traditional students. Most of the study is at home with on-campus “intensives”. In addition to classroom, we have an assigned mentor to work with on the academic portion of our training. (I am privileged to work with Pastor - and Bethelite - Duane Everson.) Classes continue on a year-round basis with continued involvement by our mentors. I am able to maintain a part time job, working with farmers and small rural communities, which has helped me to understand the need for pastors who want to serve in rural areas. In addition to the classroom and mentor, we are assigned or raised up by a congregation to become their pastor. This church assignment provides excellent “on the job training” monitored by a supervisor. The three legs of TEEM (Classroom, Mentor, and OJT) have proven to be a very successful and exciting method used to fulfill the educational component of the Candidacy process. Diane and I have been privileged to attend and be assigned to Our Savior’s

in Faribault, which is also where I serve my official internship. It is a happy experience, with a joy-filled congregation. The pastors I work with are patient role models. I receive valuable insight from them, my supervisor, and a dedicated internship committee. The experience is a wonderful mix of worship participation/planning, providing educational opportunities, sermons, visitation, and day-to-day activities at the church. It is hard to say which duties I enjoy more, because it is all very rewarding. Assuming God continues to do most of the work and keeps opening the doors, I will complete the program in about four years, becoming available for ordination in June or July of 2012. Diane and I are looking forward to serving a small rural congregation of the kind that we feel has raised us up and supported us all our lives. We are looking forward to becoming acquainted with and caring about a group of people who will care about us. We will do our best to make this new place our new home. When we left our parents and went on our own, we left with their continued love and support; but they did not stop being our parents. Likewise we see Bethel as our family. We will sadly no longer be able to attend Bethel as we have in the past, but we are happy for 37 years in this wonderful congregation. It has molded and changed us and helped to make us who we are. We are blessed with the knowledge that as we go forward, doing the best we can, we will always consider Bethel our home. Please continue to keep Don and Diane in your prayers as they venture out to do kingdom work. God bless you both and come home to Bethel when you can!
