THE VISITOR BETHEL LUTHERAN CHURCH A NEW (HELPING HAND) MINISTRY BEGINNING AT BETHEL? AUGUST 2015 VOLUME 15, ISSUE 8 Does a person have to hop on a plane and fly to Tanzania to be involved with mission? . . . Does a person have to drive to St Paul to the Dorothy Day Center to find a ministry . . . ? Or, can mis- sion and ministry happen in your own neighborhood? Friends, you know there are peo- ple all around us who have simple needs and a desire for a “helping hand”. They may be people from Bethel, people in your neighbor- hood, or others from around our community. In each of these cases, we have great opportunities to share the love of Christ through our hands, our feet and our hearts as we roll up our sleeves and serve them. Some of our leaders here at Bethel have been dreaming, scheming, and praying about the possibility of a new ministry (Helping Hand Ministry?) we might offer. What if we had an intergenerational list of people from Bethel (singles, couples and entire families . . . ) who were willing to step in and roll up their sleeves when needs arose . . . ? Maybe to help others with yard work, to move furniture, run a simple errand, to rake a yard in the fall, or to help with some snow removal in the winter? All around us we have: people whose abilities have been limited by their age, an illness or injury, or have recently faced a crisis or tragedy . . . What if there were people we could connect them with for the little bit of help they may need? In the next few weeks, or months, we are hoping to de- velop three things that would enable this ministry to take shape. First, we would love to have a few people who would serve as coordinators to link “a need” with “those who would help”, and this coordination could be done over the tele- phone or email without leaving home . . . Secondly, we would love to assemble a list of people, of all ages, who would be willing to lend a “helping hand” with a project or two . . . And thirdly, we hope those of you who are injured, sick, overwhelmed or limited by age, will be willing to ask for the help you need from your Christian brothers and sis- ters here at Bethel. Over the past couple years I’ve heard a number of Bethel people comment, “Pastor, serving on a committee or council is difficult 920 Third Street Hudson, WI 54016 PERIODICAL ONE CONGREGATION TWO LOCATIONS BETHEL DOWNTOWN 920 Third Street Hudson, WI 54016 (Administrative office) P 715.386.8821 Fax: 715.386.8894 [email protected] www.bethelhudson.org Office Hours : M-F: 8:30 am4:30 pm Sunday: 8 am10 am BETHEL HIGHLANDS 504 Frontage Road Hudson, WI 54016 P 715.386.8821 BETHEL HIGHLANDS PRESCHOOL 504 Frontage Road Hudson, WI 54016 P 715.381.8254, x. 401 www.bethelhighlandspreschool.org BROADCAST OF SERVICES Hudson Public Access/Channel 15 broadcasts Bethel’s Sunday service on Wednesdays at 7 pm and Thursdays at 7 am. CHURCH COUNCIL MINUTES HIGHLIGHTS, JULY 13, 2015

OUTREACH COMMITTEE REPORT—Cindy Nelson and Curt Larson

Cindy Nelson and Curt Larson attended the meeting to provide an overview of the Outreach Committee’s objectives and activities. Bethel uses Welcome/Communication cards to identify visitors and to keep our contact information current. The cards help us track how often visitors have attended services. Visitors receive a welcome letter, a “cookie caller” will visit, and they will be invited to attend new member classes if they visit frequently. Existing mem-bers are also encouraged to complete these cards. We have seen an increase in prayer requests since we started using these cards. The Committee would love to have additional members!

WOMEN’S WELCA

SUMMER RETREAT

This year's St. Croix Valley WELCA summer retreat will be held on Thursday, Aug. 13 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Burkhardt, WI. The morning will begin with registration and coffee from 8:15 - 8:45 am. A registration fee of $10 per person will be taken at the door. The cost in-cludes lunch to be served before we head home. For those who are unable to stay for lunch, the cost will be $5. The theme for the morning is "Rooted in Christ". Hectic lives! Full schedules! Too much to do and not enough time to do it! It's easy to get over-whelmed with so many things pulling us in so many directions. How do we find balance in the midst of all of this and stay "firmly rooted in Christ"? Barbara Solsaa, founder of Clergy Life Coaching, will be our speaker. She will focus on how we can stay rooted and grounded in Christ in the midst of all of the things that keep us busy and pull us away from Christ as our center. We hope that the women of Bethel will be able to attend this inspirational day of fellowship with other women from the St. Croix Valley conference.

YAH MN LANDSCAPE

ARBORETUM TRIP

The Young at Hearts will have an opportunity to travel to the Minnesota Landscape Arbore-tum on Thursday, August 20th. Each year the Arbore-tum has a special ex-hibit, and this year it is an awe-inspiring Lego creation. The exhibit in-cludes twelve whimsical inter-pretations of nature at play. The largest single piece, the Peacock, is made of 68,827 Legos.

The cost for the trip is $20 and includes admission and the tram tour. Lunch is on your own in the Arboretum cafeteria. Please sign up for the trip at the Downtown welcome center no later than August 10th. Payment for the trip is also due by that date. The bus will leave from the Downtown campus at 8:45 and we will return around 3:30.

BETHEL BOOK CLUB

The Bethel Book Club will meet on Wednesday, September 2nd from 1-3 pm at the Downtown campus. The book we will be discussing is, The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin, and will be facilitated by Carolyn Shurb. All are welcome!

If you have an interest in

Native American culture,

American history, the Old

West or mission trips, you’ll

want to join us for our Fall

trip to the Pine Ridge Indian

Reservation in southwestern

South Dakota. We’ll be de-

livering school supplies and

clothing, seeing the sites,

hearing from a number of

Lakota friends, and doing a

small service project. (And

above all things, showing

the love of Christ through

our actions!)

The dates are Thursday-

Sunday, October 22-25 and

the cost is $200 to cover

transportation, lodging and

food. (We can only take a

maximum of 18 people.)

Talk to Pastor John, Alan

Park or Mary Gerzmehle if

you’re interested. (This has

been a life-changing trip for

so many for the past couple

of years!)

3RD ANNUAL PINE

RIDGE MISSION TRIP TANZANIA JULY 4TH

FUNDRAISER UPDATE

Thanks to everyone who at-tended and helped to make the Tanzania 4th of July fundraiser a success! In addition to great weather, scrumptious food, and wonderful camaraderie, we raised $3,800 for our Tan-zanian partner church, The Cathedral. A Bethel group will

travel to Tanzania next Febru-ary to meet with our partners and work on various projects. If you’re inter-

ested in joining the group, please contact Alan Park ([email protected]) or Mary Gerzmehle ([email protected]) for more information! Asante Sana!

THANKS FOR YOUR

HELP! Hopefully you’ve noticed a marked improvement with the picture quality of the screens at the Highlands recently. We want to thank the committee who put the time and effort into helping

with this important project. A great big THANK YOU to: Darrel Schoeberlein, Paul Gavic, Brian Johnson, Ralph Van Keulen, Bill Jenkinson and Pas-tor John. Thanks for your time, talents and energies, gentlemen! (We have more improvements to do on our sound, lighting and video systems, but they are on hold until more money is avail-able.)

BANDAGES FOR

GLOBAL HEALTH

MINISTRIES

Naomi circle will meet at Bethel Downtown in the overflow area of the fellowship hall on Wednesday, August 12, 9-11 am to assemble rolled ban-dages for Global Health Min-istries. Interested members of the congregation are in-vited to assist with this pro-ject. Commercial bandages are often expen-sive and in short supply, so rolled bandages, or "missionary ban-dages", are needed in many countries. Suitable materials used are bed sheets, white only, cotton or cotton blend. There is cur-rently a shortage of bandages at most of the Global Health Min-istries throughout the world.

AUGUST 2015 AUGUST 2015

BETHEL HIGHLANDS PRESCHOOL UPDATES

There are many changes at Bethel Highlands Preschool! This spring we said goodbye to four of our teachers, three of whom have been with us since our opening in 2007. They were each ready to explore new options, or moving to new locations. While we are happy for their new opportunities, we are sad to see them go. Clara Ashwood, Missy Austreng, and Nikki Hahn were all part of the original BHP team and each played a huge role in our success. Over the years they have significantly impacted the lives of hundreds of children and families. The daily work that goes into running a preschool class-room is more than most people can imagine. Beyond the daily needs of 3- and 4-year-olds, these teachers also planned and implemented activities to develop skills for life! Most importantly, these teachers helped foster rela-tionships—and relationships with God. For their eight years of service, for their role in establishing BHP, and for the hundreds of lives they’ve touched, we are eternally grateful. Thank you!

After the conclusion of the school year, the board conducted interviews for new teachers. We are pleased to report that we have filled all of our teaching positions with highly qualified, educated, and experienced teachers. Alyssa Edholm, Mollie Hagman, Michelle Kulzer, and Kate Quebodeaux will be joining us this fall.

A NOTE FROM CAMP FROM COUNSELOR AND BETHEL MEMBER, JON KREYE

“This summer God has called me to try something new at a place which I now call home. Lake Wapogasset Lutheran Bible camp is where I've been spending my summer. I am counseling weeklong campers who range from 4-9th grade. I am responsible for being with the kids all day, which includes leading a daily Bible study with them, wor-shiping with them, and doing all kinds of crazy outdoor activities. Hanging out with a bunch of middle schoolers all day every week can be draining, but the reward I get makes it incredibly worth while. I am inspired by many of these campers’ love for God and care for others. One of my favorite parts of this job is building relationships with my campers and hearing about how they have encountered God and how they want to continue their faith walks. It's so moving to hear what my campers have to say about our bible studies and to hear them pray. I have learned a lot about myself and about everyday ministry this summer. I feel blessed to have such a wonderful opportunity to share the gospel with so many. ‘For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of

God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the gentile.’ Romans 1:16"

ALL WORSHIP VOLUNTEER KICK-OFF EVENT & TRAINING

As a way to say thank you and begin the program year on a great footing, we are going to have an All Worship Volunteer Kick-Off Event & Training from 6-7:30 pm, Sunday, August 30th at Bethel's Highlands Campus. If you are currently serving as a worship volunteer or have interest in serving in this role, please save the date on your calendars! If you have any questions, please email Pastor Alicia ([email protected]). Your presence matters to the ministry of Bethel! We'll look forward to seeing you there! *Light refreshments will be served.

BETHEL’S HOSPITALITY/WORSHIP VOLUNTEER MINISTRY DOWNTOWN AND HIGHLANDS CAMPUSES We have four worship services every weekend at Bethel, and it “takes a village” to keep our hospitality/worship volunteer ministry alive and running smoothly (one look at the list on page 13 will show you!). Would you be willing to take a turn every now and then to help us out? One current need is for some folks to help run the projector/PowerPoint slide show at our 11 am ser-vice this fall. Please contact our volunteer coordinator, Kathy Jeska, about this or other volunteer opportunities ([email protected] or 715.386.8821, ext. 33), or plan to attend our Volunteer Kick-off on August 30th. Thank you for considering this vital Bethel ministry!

BIBLE STUDY, DEVOTIONS & PRAYER SMALL GROUPS

SCHOOL SUPPLIES COLLECTION FOR TWO MINISTRIES

Bethel is collecting school supplies for two ministries again this year: Lutheran World Relief and the Wolf Creek school on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. A Bethel group will de-liver the supplies to Pine Ridge in October.

This is a great time to purchase school supplies—sales can be found in most stores! If you would like to help, the list for LWR is below. There is no specific list for Pine Ridge.

Four 70-sheet notebooks, wide– or college-ruled. (NO loose-leaf paper) One 30-centimeter ruler or ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other One pencil sharpener One blunt scissors One eraser, approx. 2-1/2” Five unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers; secure together with a rubber band. Five ballpoint pens (NO gel ink); secure together with a rubber band

Cash donations are also welcome. (A $10.00 contribution will buy seven more bags for LWR!) Please specify “LWR school bags” and/or “Pine Ridge supplies”, then place in an envelope at either Bethel welcome center.

Thank you for considering these important ministries. Extra supplies will go back into our local community.
