“Being, Living as, and Making Disciples of Jesus Christ”
At 25, Thank You By Pastor Casey
Thank you, dear people, for the June 16th surprise celebration of my 25th year as pastor of Bethany! I had no inkling whatso-ever that anything was in the works—which is kind of scary, on the one hand, to be completely oblivious while so much planning and work went on around me, and to know that 950+ people were able to keep a secret. On the other hand, it was a beautiful event which left me speechless for about 3 days. You are wonderful people. Sneaky, but wonderful.
I told Lucinda when I left the house that Sunday morning, “Today is Ben’s (our youngest son’s) birthday…that means we moved here exactly 25 years ago today.” She just said, “Oooh, that’s right. We did.” Thank you so very much for re-membering also. (See “thank you” note printed inside.) I am deeply moved and humbled by your love. God has blessed me with you. After the meal, someone told me, “You know, Bethany is a happy congregation.” Yes it is!
When I graduated from seminary, my mama said, “I’m glad for whatever you learned there, but mainly, remember to love the people. Just love the people.” I never dreamed how much love I would receive and feel! Thank you.

Stewardship of our Civic Freedoms As Americans celebrate the birthday of our nation, we give thanks for our civic freedoms of speech, religion, assembly, due process, a speedy trial, voting and many more. Our freedom has made us the envy of much of the world.
But as with any valuable gift, our civic freedoms can be abused, neglected or underappreciated to the point where, if we aren’t careful, they hardly matter anymore. Lutherans are guided by Martin Luther’s insight that we are simul-taneously called to be responsible citizens of “two kingdoms” – first, of God’s spiritual realm, and second, of earthly governments of people and laws. The synergy of our “dual citizenship” directs us to be good stewards of our civic freedoms. Freedom of speech: Yes, even hateful speech and lies are protected under our Constitution, but Christians avoid them in obedience to Jesus’ com-mand to love our neighbor as ourselves and by the Eighth Commandment, which Luther explains in The Small Catechism: “We should fear and love God, so that we do not tell lies about our neighbors, betray or slander them, or destroy their reputations.” We steward this freedom by speaking honestly and insisting others do, too. Freedom of religion: Millions of people across the globe, including Chris-tians, face persecution and discrimination because of their faith. We dare not take our freedom for granted, but exercise it with joy and defend the rights of others to follow their own consciences. Freedom from illegal prosecution: Our guarantees of due process in legal, criminal and civil proceedings uphold justice and guard against govern-ment misconduct. It works imperfectly, as do all human systems, but as good stewards we fight for justice and the rights for all. Freedom of self-governance: With its interconnected checks and balances, our three-branch system of government provides stability, accountability and flexibility for change. It’s a great system, but it requires us to be in-formed and involved. We steward this freedom by participating in political processes, voting and insisting on honest government that works for our interests. This month, as citizens of both God’s spiritual realm and the United States of America, we renew our commitment to be good stewards of the free-doms we are privileged to have.

Read the story of King Saul…tall, very handsome…I’ll bet he looked especially good in armor! Now, compare him with the shepherd boy, David. David, was a short, stringy, teen-ager who was clearly under-valued within his own family! Which indi-vidual stepped up to become one of the greatest heroes of all time? Which was willing to challenge Goliath? Which did God pour himself into? HINT: All heroes have ONE thing in common!!! A hero
always cares about the needs of someone else… above their own!
In scripture, in fantasy and especially in real life… a hero leaps beyond themselves, they defy logic … they coura-geously stretch a hand to help another!!!!
Do heroes live in Fredericksburg? YES! They are men, women, children of every age and every color… stepping up! Offering a hand of grace! They exist in the hospitals, nursing homes, school playgrounds, lumber yards, gro-cery stores, courthouses and jails. They daily choose to make the way easier for others…without thinking of the cost to themselves!!!!
YET…We are currently edging toward a crisis! Many of us imagine ourselves as the
heroes of our adventures. We defer to the plastic heroes of the movies. We demon-strate our pride by taking a multitude of pho-tos documenting… ourselves… No surprise those photos are called “Selfies!”
God calls us to embrace each other. Don’t forget EGO…
stands for “Edging God Out!” God designed us capable
of being heroes...for each other. Teach your children ex-
actly what that means. Make God’s words come alive!
Show them through your actions what it looks like to be
a true HERO of God!
Disciple Crosswalk

Our children live in a time that is satu-rated with HEROES....think about it! Captain America, Superman, Spider-man, The Incredibles, Thor, the Hulk, Batman, Iron Man, Ant Man….the Sun-day school children counted 28 just off the top of their heads! I asked, “Have you ever seen a hero? Raise your hand if you have seen a hero walking down Main Street? Was he a stranger?… Did he wear a shiny satin cape…or fancy “super” boots with wings? Were his fists on his hips? Did he seem to be looking off into the future? Was he running or …waiting at a crosswalk? Was he a guy with crazy-huge muscles? … Did he have a mask or a magic shield…Was he in HEB? Hmmm? NO??? Then … does that mean there are no heroes in Fred-ericksburg?” What is a hero and who decides if you are one???!
Are heroes basically fantasy charac-ters? Hmmm? Let’s see what the Bible has to say! I Samuel 16:7 tells us,...”The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” To under-stand what makes a hero…look in the Old Testament!

Our Bethany Emergency Preparedness Team is looking at ways we respond to various
emergencies. The first area for planning is the most likely to occur: medical emergencies. We will be recruiting and training soon. Would you consider being trained as a volunteer? Lee Gisclon, who himself is highly trained in this area, heads up this effort. You may speak to him, or leave your name with Layne at the church office 997-2069. Please note if you are a nurse or have medical training. Thanks!

We Could Use Your
Help! In August students will be back in Fredericksburg schools and the
Food4Kids backpack program, coordinated by the Needs Council, will again be providing nutritious, non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food to chil-dren to ensure they get enough food on weekends and holidays when they can't depend on school meals to avoid hunger. Bethany, for the past two years, has different teams who assemble and
take food to Fredericksburg middle school and Doss students who have been identified by the school counselor as needing help with meals on the weekends.
During the month of August Bethany will be collecting specific foods and/or money that benefit this much needed program. Bethany Foundation’s grant to the Needs Council provided meat sticks for this pro-gram.
The list below are foods that the Needs Council has identified that are non-perishable, nutritious, yet easy for young children to open and eat.
Needed are individual packages of any listed below:
Protein: Tuna or chicken salad kits, beanie weenies, Vi-enna sausages
Dairy: pudding Fruit: Fruit cups, raisins, apple sauce Juice: any 100% juice box Bars: Nutrigrain, granola or protein bar Snacks: Crackers with filling (cheese or peanut butter),
fruit snacks, single serve peanut butter cups, good fish, cheez-it, pretzels
The food can be left in the triple room. Thank you for considering
donations to this worthy cause.

Blessings also to Pastor Tiemann, Marc and Camille Williamson and others who visited with Mom. She so enjoyed the time you spent with her. We are truly thankful for our Bethany family! God’s Blessings to all.

Dear Bethany family, I can never express how much your cards, prayers, messages, calls, and hugs mean to me following the diagnosis of cancer. Your prayers keep my spirits buoyed and re-mind me every day how God uses others to uphold us in every storm. This journey would be more difficult without you. Cliff and I both appreciate our church family so much. What a group of loving people! Marjorie Ottmers

Synod Assembly Summary
The Southwestern Texas Synod As-sembly was held in Corpus Christi from May 30th to June 2nd. Several members of Beth-any attended: Pastor Casey Zesch, Pastor Lucinda Zesch, Pastor Kevin Haug, Carl and Cristol Schoessow, and David and Teri Ewing. Carl is the Hill Country Conference male representative on the Synod Council. He is joined by Pastor Linda Mosely as the
Hill Country Conference female clergy representative. The theme of the Assembly was “Open Eyes, Burning Hearts,” and attendees were invited to join in learning, worship, and the business of the synod. Rev. Peggy Hahn gave the keynote addresses titled “Sacred Shifts.” She spoke of how changes in society have made it necessary for the church to make adaptive changes so that we can continue the mission of reaching out with the Gospel. David Ewing also gave a short presentation in a Workshop detailing some of the work of the CICBA.
In conducting its business, the assembly passed a
budget for next year, and it passed a memorial to the Church-
wide Assembly asking the ELCA to expand its accompaniment
in the Middle East from simply Palestinian Christians to include
Israeli Jewish and Muslim neighbors.

Our first annual Texas Made Texas Raised food & wine event was held on Thursday, June 20th at the Barn at Swal-low’s Eve. Over 200 guests joined us for a night of food, wine, and giving. We tasted wines from 1851 Vineyards, Texas Heritage Vineyards, Lost Draw Cellars, William Chris Vine-yards, Southhold Cellars, Crowson, Ponotoc, Farmhouse Vineyards, & Narrow Path Winery. Each winery was paired with delicious gourmet bites from Vivere Catering, Revel Ca-tering, Bejas, Mac’s BBQ, Hye Market, Fredericksburg Fudge, & The Peach Tree. The event also featured music from the band American Dreamer, who provided the perfect back-ground to our event. Many awesome auction items were do-nated to make a very successful silent auction. The big board, a mix between a live & silent auction, was a new idea at the event that raised over $6000! The numbers are still coming in, but the event was a huge success. We plan to con-tinue this event in the future to help with operating costs as we continue to expand the programs at Bethany Preschool.
This event would not have been possible without the hard work our of co-chairwomen, Casie Ward & Keri Hensley and our decorating guru, Laura Weinheimer. These three women, along with Joyce Richey and a small army of volun-teers, took an idea and made it a reality. Thank you to every sponsor, winery, restaurant, auction item donor, and patron for making our first event a night to remember. We hope you all had as much fun as we did. We look forward to you all joining us in 2020 for another night of food, wine, & giving.
In His Service,
Stephanie Sanchez, Director

Global Leadership Summit August 8-9
For the fourth year, the Global Leadership Summit will be in Fredericksburg on August 8-9 at the High School auditorium. We usually have around 10 – 15 Bethany mem-bers attend, mostly through their workplaces, although any-one can register individually online at www.globalleadership.org; just scroll down for the link to the Summit. The event is the product of Willow Creek Church in Illinois but is live-streamed all over the world. It is hosted lo-cally by Holy Ghost Lutheran Church. The Summit is a world-class experience to help you get a unique blend for vision, inspiration and skills you can immediately apply to your church, your workplace, and your community. Learn from a faculty representing multiple sectors and backgrounds. Though sponsored by a megachurch with several Christian speakers, the event also features faculty from businesses and global charity organizations. If you have questions, please speak with Pastor Casey.

Bridging
Borders Mission
Trip to Appalachia, July 20-28
Erin Huff & Kiesha Priem will be traveling
with Taylor Evans, Kiera Haug, Natalie Huff,
Annie Myers, Zoe Rivera, Kailey Schnelle,
Audrey Spurgin, Cameran Whiting, and Kora
Young to Sneedville, Tennessee to serve
those in need of a drier, safer, warmer
home. This is a “Bridging Borders” trip with
Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp, and we’ll also
be partnering with Appalachian Service
Project.
Our group will be doing some meaningful la-
bor, but building relationships is a key ob-
jective of all Bridging Borders trips. In this
way, we can show the love of Christ regard-
less of physical ability or construction ex-
perience. There is so much we can learn
through conversations, playing with others,
and partaking in a culture different than our
own. We will be immersed into a new com-
munity, and we’ll be able to discover our
gifts and what we have to offer in a very
tangible way. We appreciate all of your sup-
port, thoughts, and prayers as we set out on
this journey!

Thank You After I said “Amen” to my third sermon in contemporary P&W on June 16 and an-nounced the next song, Matt White un-announced it and said we’re doing some-thing different, and out of the blue Pastor Kevin came in with all the folks from the sanctuary and Pastor Jeff freshly arrived from Arkansas. Then all the pastors and Kiesha had a blessing, and we all communed together as one.
That was the beginning of a beautiful event—thank you for the 25th anniversary celebration of our call to serve together. For the plan-ning team, the BBQ meal, the skit, the decorations, the music, the painting of the cowboy at prayer and the artist being present, the beer & wine, the careful planning so that I wouldn’t notice a thing out of the ordinary, the set-up at Marktplatz, the nice weather, the kind words and hugs and cards and embarrassingly generous gifts…for these and you and the many kindnesses I’ve forgotten to name, Lucinda and I are deeply grateful. --Pastor Casey 17
Did you hear? C.I.C.B.A is now
B.O.A.T. Did you read in last’s month’s newsletter that the team formerly known as “CICBA” is now “BOAT?“
Bethany Outreach and Advocacy Team. Thank you for getting in the boat to help with the Fredericksburg Elementary School “emergency clothing” drive at Bethany.

Each day at camp, we get to do Bible Study outside. Here, Nathan, Kamdin, Jett, and Aiden pose for a picture with their counselor, RJ, after Bible Study in their “Secret Spot.”
We wake up at 5:30 am on the final Saturday to get on the road by 6:00 am, and the counselors and staff gra-ciously get up with us to send us off. Here are Ryan, Gage, Holt, and Jace with their counselors, Odilon and Noah.
Kaylee and Pastor Kevin are getting ready to literally “go up the moun-tain” as they prepare for Hike Day!
