Evaluating PerformanceThe Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) new Backlight, Uplight, Glare or BUG standard of measurement provides improved performance descriptions and measurement for LED luminaires. This TM-15 Luminaire Classification System (LCS) for Outdoor Luminaires classifies luminaire photometric performance related to light trespass, sky glow, and high angle brightness control.

All BetaLED products are International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) approved and are measured for performance using IESNA standards and guidelines including the IES BUG rating system which supercedes the former cut-off classification system.

BetaLED has participated in numerous U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) testing and evaluation demonstrations including the GATEWAY and CALiPER programs. These demonstrations and tests evaluate high performance BetaLED products for outdoor illumination in a variety of commercial applications. The new 62,900-square-foot Cub Foods in St. Paul, Minn. is the first LEED Gold 2.2 Certified grocery store in the country. By installing THE EDGE luminaires in the parking lot, SuperValu’s Cub Foods not only earned LEED credits but became the first commercial parking lot in Minnesota to be illuminated using LED lights.

“BetaLED products contributed to earning credits for LEED certification by presenting significant energy savings,” said Scott Reinke, senior project manager for SuperValu Real Estate and Store Development.

In addition to energy savings, BetaLED fixtures also meet the City’s strict regulations on light pollution. “While achieving the City’s light trespass requirements, BetaLED provides desired light levels which help improve visibility and security for our customers,” said Reinke.

Crocina Tunnel–Arezzo, Italy

When the city of Arezzo was ready to test LED technology, the Crocina Tunnel was shut down overnight to retrofit all existing High

Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps with THE EDGE tunnel luminaires.

“We plan to evaluate LED solutions that have the potential to reduce energy consumption by 47 to 90 percent over traditional lighting solutions,” said Austin Mayor Will Wynn. “The total wattage of the LED parking garage light installation is about 30 percent below the allowable wattage as required by the Energy Code Allowance.”

The illustration below provides a graphic representation of the LED optical fine tuning range that BetaLED can provide. The darker area represents Type V Short optic coverage. The Short optic can be utilized to comply with more stringent light spill and high angle brightness specifications or codes by incorporating a lower main beam and cutoff angle. The extended yellow area indicates the Type V Medium optic coverage. The Medium optic incorporates a slightly higher main beam to allow wider, more economical pole spacing.

Both the Short and Medium optics still achieve excellent uniformity and IDA approval.
