Brother Spotlight: Paul Marmol By: Cody Heermans

P A G E 2 V O L U M E 1 , I S S U E 3

Brother Paul Marmol has always exem-plified a serious passion for maintain-ing a strong brotherhood and upholding the duties that come with being a mem-ber of Pi Kappa Phi. His ability to bal-ance his school work along with great involvement in extracurricular activi-ties shows his work ethic. Brother Paul is currently an Actuarial Science major with a minor in Computer Science. After he receives an undergraduate degree from Georgia State, he hopes to either enter graduate school at GSU or Emory’s Goizueta School of Business for an MBA. His goal from there is to pursue a career as an Actuary. Paul currently has the sec-ond highest GPA in the fraternity at 3.84. This semester Paul is broaden-ing his goals and filling his free time with every meaningful position he finds. He is currently the Treasurer for Beta Kappa, and will be until the end of this upcoming fall semester. He’s been a part of the rush committee every

semester, and is very active in looking for quality young men that will contrib-ute to our chapter. His treasurer duties go beyond our chapter. He started as an IFC Delegate but recently became the IFC Treasurer. After a resignation from an SGA Senator, Paul stepped in and took the job this semester. He is cur-rently running for reelection to maintain his spot on the SGA. With all of the duties he has acquired outside of school along with a heavy workload in school, Paul is still determined to put the time and effort in to maintaining a strong brotherhood. “I believe that our chapter's best quality is our brotherhood. I feel that when we put all business aside, we are all closer friends than any other fraternity.” Al-though he knows that the work to main-taining a great chapter never ends, Paul is happy with where we have come. “We have gone from a chapter with less than 30 guys, to now almost 45; a dras-tic increase, which I find to be incredi-ble. Our chapter cumulative GPA has

gone from a scary 2.6 to an astounding 3.0. I see this chapter growing drasti-cally in the next few years as GSU grows and develops closer to a more traditional college.” Every member of Beta Kappa knows the potential our chapter has, and we know the work that is ahead to reach this potential. With brothers like Paul leading by example, the future for the chapter certainly looks posi-tive.

Beta Kappa Alumni, I hope everyone is doing well and looking forward to the Alumni Braves Game which is coming up very soon now. The chapter is doing very well. We have recently been nominated for the “Greek Collaboration Award.” This is an award given out to Greek organizations that have teamed up for a community service project that goes above and beyond the average service project. The sisters of Phi Mu Fraternity

and the brothers of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity decided to combine our philanthropies, the Children's Miracle Network and Push Amer-ica to organize an event. This event was for the children at Scottish Rite Hospital and it had a signifi-cant influence on both of our chap-ters. The Phi Mu chapter was in charge of building all the carnival games. Each game was crafted to encour-age a large array of child patients to get involved in play time. These games were each created to moti-vate the children to actively move

and stimulate their brains. Our chapter bought all the supplies and cookies for the cookie decorating section of the party. It was a very successful event and the people that participated were impacted, and had a great time. Chapter President,

March Intramural Update By: David Ewalt The spring sports sea-son started off slow with an early forfeit from all the teams. The first annual spring outdoor retreat may or may not have been the reason. Regardless the next week the squads got it to-gether both Beating Sigma Nu in softball and Alpha Epsilon Pi in outdoor soccer. The soc-cer teams made a valiant effort against Kappa Sigma taking them into overtime where they lost in the waning moments. Due to the multiple forfeits in Softball the team was not al-lowed into the playoffs thus the end of the season.

The Pi Kappa Phi kickball team started strong and finished 2nd place for the one day tourna-ment. Brothers Adam Sukenik and Will Dove led the team with an array of home runs. Going into the spring Pi Kappa Phi was within striking dis-tance down 17 points for the coveted All-Sports Trophy. With the recent defeats and for-feits it looks like Pi Kappa Phi has a stronghold on 2nd place for the remainder of the school year. The future looks bright though for Pi Kappa Phi athlet-ics and an influx of some new

blood next year Pi Kappa Phi will once again be back on top. This will be my last article of the semester. I wish everyone a great summer and hope to be back reporting in the fall. Sayonara!

The men of Beta Kappa have

had an extraordinary month, filled with

events and academics. Earlier in the

month we had our first alumni-brother

softball game. I would like to thank:

John Oxford, Steve Sweeney, and John

Slack for taking the time to come out to

Peachtree Hills and hang out with the

guys. We will be scheduling more

alumni-softball games and events this

summer. We also had the Alumni

Braves game at the Golden Moon Ca-

sino Patio at Turner Field. There was a

great turn out and I would like to thank:

Jason Jones, David McCabe, John Ox-

ford, and Kyle Killough for taking the

time to come and get to know the

brothers and enjoy a beautiful Sunday

afternoon at the ball park.

The semester is coming to a

close and I feel very proud of the work

that we have accomplished as a chapter

in the area of public relations and

alumni relations. We have successfully

created and mass-distributed a newslet-

ter that has received accolades from

Nationals, we have scheduled two

alumni events in one semester, and we

have made leaps and bounds are far as

publicizing our name on campus. We

are looking forward to upcoming Fall

semester and with the start of college

football at Georgia State we are looking

at a Greek Life transformation. We will

be setting up weekly home game tail-

gates where alumni, family and friends

will always be welcome. I have enjoyed

interviewing the alumni for the monthly

spotlight piece— next month I think I

will install two— and I am proud of all

of my brothers who have contributed to

our progress...Damn, it feels good to be

a Pi Kapp!

Readers, Sorry for the delay in sending out the March/April newsletter. It was a very busy couple of months for the fraternity. Everyone was dealing with the pressures of exams and final papers and then right in the middle of the month everyone is hit with spring break. We had our first two alumni events and unfortunately due to inclement weather we had to postpone parent’s . This past Tuesday we had out 3rd Annual Lasagna Extrava-ganza hosted by Larry & Ellie Kahn and also had our picture taken for our first composite. This has been a monumental semester as far as the development of Beta Kappa public relations and I would like to thank all of the alumni and brothers who have helped sup-port the changes and encourage everyone to continue the hard work and positive changes.
