History

The Model European Union project was initiated and then organised for the first time by six university stu-dents in spring 2007. Due to very positive responses from the participants the event was then repeated in the following years.

In order to cope with the organisational effort, this group of university students founded the Bringing Europeans Together Association e.V. (BETA e.V.) in 2009. We, the members of BETA e.V., pursue our goal of establishing powerful and sustainable administrative structures that will enable the smooth running of these events.

Process

In spring 2011, 180 young Europeans will meet in Stras-bourg for seven days to experience European politics first-hand. The or-dinary legislative procedure between the European Par-liament and the Council of Mini-sters will be based on two up-to-date euro-political to-pics. The participants will perform the roles of MEPs, ministers, lobbyists, journalists or interpreters. As they will act according to their role, they will have the chance to experience politics as real professionals, making the most out of formal debates, caucuses and coffee breaks throughout the event.

The participants will be prepared for the simulation with several workshops, lead by experts, who will train the par-ticipants in debating skills and diplomatic etiquette and elaborate further on the topics under discussion. After-wards, the topics will be analysed and debated in a panel discussion with Members of the European Parliament.

Goals During the simulation, the participants will expe-rience international politics and thereby develop their rhetorical skill at the same time as learning to resolve conf licts and reach a consensus. Moreover, the simu-lation encourages further personal development, the exchange of ideas between cultures and an interest in European politics. There are also several practical be-

nefits of the simulation. Partici-pants have the opportunity to:

• familiarise themselves with the formal procedures of discussion in the parliament and the council

• practise formal English and learn parliamentary etiquette

• work with legal texts• xperience group dynamics and

co-ordinate a team

Working in the association enables the members to gain experience, sharpen their political consciousness and make new contacts with people across Europe.

Participate

Model European Union 2011 is a highly renowned event among Europe’s youth. It is a terrific opportu-nity for young Europeans who want to know more about the ordinary legislative procedure of the EU. It is one of the events which best simulates the reality of the European Institutions, as it takes place annually in the actual building of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Moreover, it is an amazing chance to get to know other young Europeans from every walk of life, from many different backgrounds and from many different countries, brought together by the same va-lues, passion and interest towards the European Uni-on. pDiscover in this challenging experience what’s behind the scenes of the so often elusive European Union! Discuss and learn with people from all over Europe about issues on the diplomatic agenda and ex-press and develop your view on the EU. This event provides you with the unique opportunity to learn about the European Union and its institutions and to find out how negotiating and finding compromise re-ally work in the European Union.Join MEU 2011! We look forward to meeting you in Strasbourg!
