a feW Years aGo executives in the airline industry raced to individualize passengers’

in-fl ight entertainment. The executives reasoned that if they could more adequately entertain people during the fl ight perhaps people would not notice the lack of legroom and other discomforts. but now, just a few years later, the industry scantly pays attention to providing in-fl ight entertainment. Why? since the introduction of iPads and e-readers, people bring their own entertainment to the airport. this development makes me wonder which of our futuristic visions will in short time become tomorrow’s popular standard. and it also serves to remind us how quickly our world is changing.

only a few years ago i went shopping for a Palm Pilot. remember those? the sales associate told me that the model i was about to purchase was more powerful than the computer that powered the apollo 13— a space ship that landed on the moon! now, that same Palm Pilot is more likely to be found in a museum than a home or offi ce.

the modern world is constantly changing – and it is happening very quickly. in his recently reprinted classic, joseph and His brothers, thomas mann observes that the clock seems to move faster now than it did in antiquity. He writes:

“six hundred years in those days, under that sky did not signify what they do to our history in the West; those expanses of time were more silent, more mute, more alike; time was less active.”

We do not live under a quiet sky; in our world, time is overly active—the world is quickly changing. While we need to keep pace, let us not rush too far ahead. We claim that time is sacred. let us live up to that claim. as the world speeds up, we can slow down. let us learn to spend less time looking ahead and worrying about tomorrow while missing the here and now. let us learn to slow down and rejoice in the present, even if it means falling a bit behind with Palm Pilots and iPads (aren’t those outdated already?).

W e are all celebrating israel’s 65th independence Day. al Hanisim is a prayer

recognizing miracles and for over a thousand years it has been in our prayer book refl ecting the miracles of Hanukkah and Purim. for a generation now, we are blessed to include another al Hanisim for the miracle of the modern state of israel.

People who were alive in 1948 emphatically declare what a miracle it is that we have israel. i recall being 9-years-old landing in israel with my brothers and parents. It was the fi rst time I had ever been on a plane and we were moving to israel, making aliyah. as a Hebrew school student, i was memorizing israel’s national anthem, Hatikvah (the hope) and upon landing it was played over the plane’s speakers. i will never forget seeing people cry with happiness at the gut felt realization that they were part of a miracle. today, we are part of the miracle of israel. israel is alive and well and now we need for shalom to prevail.

at some point during this year’s israel independence day, the 6th day of the Hebrew month of iyar corresponding to april 16, pause, think about israel and read al Hanisim reprinted below.

“We thank you for the miracles in our lives, for the heroism, for the triumphs, and for the miraculous deliverance of our ancestors in other days, and today in our time. In the days when your children were returning to their borders, at the time a people were revived in its land as in days of old and the gates to the land of our ancestors were closed to those in need of safe haven. Enemies within the land together with seven neighboring nations sought to destroy Your people. You, in Your great Mercy stood by them in time of trouble, defended them and vindicated them. You gave them the courage to meet their foes, to open the gates to those seeking refuge, and to free the land of its armed invaders and to build a nation. You

[email protected]

delivered the many into the hands of the few, the guilty into to the hands of the innocent. You have wrought great victories and miraculous deliverance for Your people Israel to this day, revealing Your glory and Your holiness to all the world. For all these blessings we shall ever praise and exalt You.”

may israel be safe for all people and be a land and region filled with shalom. amen.

Combine al Hanisim with a positive thought of israel, with the purchase of an israeli product, or with a virtual visit by linking to an israeli website. of course, please participate in our week-long bet shira celebration of israel, april 11-19, israel today and everyday.

With al Hanisim, we recognize israel being 65 as a remarkable moment in the journey of the modern world and a true miracle for the jewish community.

Israel is Alive and Well and May Shalom Prevail

on monday, april 8, 2013 from 7:00-9:00 P.m. please join us for a premiere performance of Yours Truly, Anne an opera based on the life of anne frank. in commemoration of Yom Hashoah - Holocaust remembrance Day, we are honored to offer this program at bet shira. this performance is open to the entire community. Yours Truly, Anne is the story of a teenage girl trying to fi nd her own voice, but is also the story of how the world was thrown into the most horrifi c war that ultimately saw 60 million people dead – of which 6 million were jew and a million were jewish children. this opera is dedicated to their memories.

annual Congregational Meeting Notice

Pursuant to the by-laws of bet shira Congregation inc., notice is hereby given that the twenty eighth annual meeting of bet shira Congregation will be held

Wednesday, may 29 at 7:30 pm in the arin stacey applebaum sanctuary at

7500 sW 120th street.

Although this is not my last column (I have one more), I thought that I’d use this opportunity to refl ect upon some of the things i’ve learned and observed during the past two years as President and one year as President-elect. first of all, i have found bet shira Congregation to be an amazing and complex organization. i’ve never seen so many moving parts! each congregant adds another dimension and challenge for our mission. every family and every individual has its own needs and opinions. i’m sure you’ve heard the joke about two jewish lawyers and three opinions. just think about 425 separate member units. You can only imagine how many opinions and challenges they present. but despite the fact that our members are not shy about expressing their concerns, when we need to come together, this is a cohesive group. our members have ensured that every major event in the past three years has been successful. and, despite the natural uncertainty about making transitions, our congregants rallied around our synagogue and and as always are supportive. like nearly all religious institutions in the 21st Century, we’ve had and continue to have fi nancial challenges. But when we’ve needed money, our congregants have responded as well. sometimes, over the past three years, i’ve felt that i spent too much time raising money and analyzing budgets, even though i know that this is necessary to sustain the organization. However, the opportunities that i’ve had to participate in the High Holy Days, bar mitzvahs, shivas, anniversaries, brits, baby namings, and various and sundry celebrations clearly outshine the money concerns. i’ve never been around so many loving, generous, and well meaning people. along with our clergy and professional staff, this congregation has survived and thrived because of the people who call it home. it’s been a challenge, but one that i will cherish.

an april spring in miami is marked by greening lawns, a disappearing cloudscape of acrobatic turkey vultures, and longer hours of daylight. sisterhood marks its rite of spring by our calendar of programming, committee reviews and a renewed energy to planning.

march saw us busy in the kitchen as stephanie bull taught about sephardic cooking for Passover, sharing some of her favorite dishes out of egypt and syria. april has one class on the docket: indian traditional Vegetarian Cooking by ayesha D’mello on Wednesday, april 17th at 10 a.m. Pre-registration required, payable to sisterhood, via stephanie bull.

Daytime Book Club reviewed The Submission by Amy Waldman, a fi ercely evocative novel about a blind competition of architectural bids for the destroyed twin towers, a travesty of talent and roots, and perceptions miscarried. the next book is someone Knows my name by lawrence Hill (april 23rd @ 10 a.m. in Conference room). the may 21st read is the lady in Gold by anne o’Connor, a narrative about Gustav Klimt’s portrait of adele bauer bloch and pre-war history. it is always a pleasure to learn from sharon Glick.

sisterhood book Club thanks Clarice shtrax for hosting the march meeting where ed Kritzler’s jewish Pirates of the Caribbean describes the arrival of jewish sailors and explorers to the new World in search of freedom. april 23rd at 7:30 in the home of irene Weinberger we engage with a classic: a tale of two Cities by Charles Dickens. our may 21st book, Walter lord’s investigative classic a night to remember about the sinking of the titanic, serves as a reminder about benchmarks.

Knit for israel, was held on sunday, march 17th at bet shira under the guidance of Harriet rudoff and linda spiegelman, to benefi t our sister synagogue in Ashkelon, Israel. Thank you to many who made items for them; we are sending 18 (!) lap-size quilts to them as a result of the unbelievable generosity of the ladies of the Pomegranate society, miami Chapter. terri Davis from netzach israel is in miami in early april and will gather up these items to take back with her.

Harriet continues to teach astound us each week in Craft Corner as she works to improve our skills in the needle arts. We are lucky to have such talent in sisterhood.

nominating Committee met in march; results to be announced shortly. by-laws Committee will meet soon to discuss updating to refl ect consistency with national by-laws of Women’s League. Spring Conference is in Sarasota, Florida in mid-May; if you are interested in details, please contact suzanne.

spring luncheon will be held in april; please look for your invitation. join us for a wonderful event!

Gift shoppers, don’t forget our Treasure Chest of Delights in the glass cases. Fran and Philis are always ready to help fi nd that perfect gift. We sold plagues, fl owers, chocolates and Judaica last month as Passover remembrances.

it is never too early to say thank you to all the people who have worked so diligently this year to make sisterhood a success with much gratitude and appreciation from this President.

if you wish to participate in sisterhood in some way, please get in touch with me. there is always a spot for talent and energy. sisterhood beckons!

next sisterhood board meeting is Wednesday, april 10th at 9:30 a.m.

office cLosedPlease note the administrative offi ces will be closed all day April 1 & 2, 2013 in observance of Pesach.

We would like to thank everyone who participated in mitzvah Day on march 3. it was a wonderful success and really made a difference in our community. most of all, we want to thank Carol stein for her tireless, committed, and extremely effective leadership of the event. every year, Carol manages to make the day even better, and our whole congregation should be proud of her work.

since Carol had the help of a wonderful team, we are reprinting below her note of appreciation:

Mitzvah Day 2013 was a great success! There are so many to thank but I want to start by listing the people who take charge each year. Thanks to Betsy Yegelwel and Goldie Retchkiman, who led the group of women to the Inn Transition housing for victims of domestic abuse; to Debbie Rosenkranz who led the group to the Chapman Homeless Shelter downtown location to serve lunch to the residents; to Pris Adler for her role with families at the Chapman Homeless Shelter in Homestead, entertaining and providing snacks, games, and sporting equipment for the resident children; and Bernie Stein who led the group of strong people to tackle the jungles of Pinecrest Gardens. Thanks to the Ricisak family, whose personal project to do more landscaping at Bet Shira gave us a project for others who were willing to join in.Thanks to Gary Lichtman, who once again, took all the sandwiches and toiletry bags to the Camilius House downtown. All of the school activities were planned, organized and set up by Nancy Crair taking the lead and Velma Papier and Maya Greenberg helping with this leadership. Thanks to Sharon Glick for her never ending role in organizing our Blood Drive.

Special thanks to Alyse Messinger for her generosity, as in past years, providing the postcards and postage for the reminders to our blood donors. Thanks to Edy Cannon and Clara Milikowski who year after year have kept the collection drive in the Youth Lounge under control and organized.Very special thanks to KOSHER EVENTS by FARE TO REMEMBER, for providing all the refreshments that were served all day. I am hoping that I included everyone. There are just too many to count everyone but those listed above truly take a leadership role, year after year.-Carol Stein

now that mitzvah Day is behind us, we are looking forward to our tikkun olam shabbat on april 6.

meanwhile, we continue with collections for a number of local agencies. for the Kosher food bank, bring your non-perishable food products to the donation bin located outside the synagogue offi ce. We are also collecting books and magazines for the food bank and the Chapman Partnership, and we also welcome donations of hygiene products and unused, unexpired medical products for the open Door Clinic and other agencies. We are also collecting feminine hygiene products for women at inn transition. there is a real need for all of these items, so all donations are greatly appreciated.

israel, independence and identity all have the letter “i” in common. With careful refl ection we fi nd similarities in these words because they only stand tall, erect and proud with each word working together to keep the jewish people strong, solid and secure. this past month the jeC along with jewish families around the world had the opportunity to celebrate the 65th birthday of the state of israel. our students gave this wonderful “baby boomer” homeland of ours a fi tting tribute. Israel is the essence of Independence, of spirit, mind and actions. independence has allowed the jewish people to fl ourish and contribute greatness to the world for all religions & races. identity as a jew was a problem for many of our ancestors, but with the state of israel we have created a homeland that protects, fosters and encourages the jewish people... so try to fulfi ll the pledge you made at the Seder table this month “Next Year in jerusalem” a reality… if not this year, next year or the next year or the next. Promise yourselves to make a trip to israel to see the fruits of our people’s labor. Sixty fi ve years ago Israel was a dream of what could be. We are proud to be part of a people who make dreams reality. We are what God asked us to be; “a light upon the nations”.

We also had our jeC Passover seder, the 4 questions were asked, the four cups of Wine (grape juice) were drunk, the children had the opportunity to retell the story of our exodus from egypt as the generations before them have done. The race to fi nd the afi komen commenced. Passover is the “most” celebrated holiday among the jewish people. for the jeC students it is a part of our yearly holiday learning and celebrations. Immediately after the fi rst day of Passover we start teaching the children about the responsibility of counting the omer. they then can look forward to celebrating with the congregation the holiday of shavuot.

ishabbat (there is that letter again) involved the participation of our youngest students. Gan,aleph and bet helped enhance the experience of ishabbat with Cantor Kula and rabbi schuldenfrei. the beauty of this special shabbat was embraced with the inclusion of the entire congregation in a community dinner.

a religious school needs to have a strong jewish identity. for us this means teaching the students to integrate, include and over indulge in jewish living.

there is no i in team but there is in jeWisH!

israel, independence and identity all have the letter “i” in common.

the Purim Carnival this year was a huge success. With over 300 people in attendance, Bet Shira was fi lled with good energy and smiling faces. It was a great sight, to see so many kids and parents having a good time here at bet shira, and really celebrating Purim the way it was meant to be celebrated. the success of this carnival is in large part thanks to the support of various people in our congregation who offered fi nancial help as well as volunteering their time to make sure the carnival ran smoothly. i’d like to thank the following people:
