Dear XX

We are happy to welcome you and your husband/wife to KTH and Stockholm and we hope you are looking forward to the transition…

Starting a new life in a new country is a challenge and there are a few things we would like to point out, well in advance. You will soon notice that Swedes don’t mind talking English. The bus driver, the cashier at the supermarket, old people and your doctor, will be more or less bilingual. If you are aiming for a career or to really get in to the Swedish society, you still need to speak and understand Swedish and we advise you to put in 100% in learning Swedish from the very beginning. The longer you wait, the higher the language barrier will get. There are lots of networks for all nationalities in Stockholm and we are sure you will find your way to your own countrymen, but now you will be in Sweden, and maybe you are interested doing things the Swedish way…Swedes are crazy about organized outdoor training in groups. All year! Wet, dirty and insanely fun. Let us know if you are interested and we´ll point you in the right direction.Take a class! Art, history, silversmithing, cooking classes, yoga, handicrafts etc. Courses are given, in everything, all over the city, all the time. A course, once a week for a semester, is about 2.000-4.000SEK, depending on your interests.www.folkuniversitet.se , www.sensus.se , www.abf.seGet out into nature! Swedes love to spend time in the forest and forests are very accessible and safe. If you prefer going in a group, lots of organizations will welcome you and tell you all you need to know about the Swedish flora and fauna. Some are for free and some will charge you small fee. Friluftsframjändet, www.friluftsframjandet.se, offer nice tours, walking, skiing, skating, kayaking or mountain biking, in various areas during daytime and during weekends.

If you are mainly going to be a stay-at-home parent, with small children, we really recommend the Open Day Care (Öppna förskolan or simply “Öppnis”) Öppnis is like a playgroup, where you stay with your child. You´ll find an öppnis close to where you live, we guarantee it! Attending öppnis is free of charge and a great way to get out of the apartment and make new friends, for both parents and children. Don’t be surprised if you meet a member of the Royal Family at öppnis. They visit their local öppnis several days a week J

There is a well-maintained network for spouses http://www.stockholmacademicnetwork.se. This is a great way to find new friends, get orientated in the Stockholm society and even find a job.

KTH Relocation offer social events, once a month. Each event is always about “what’s good to know when you are new in Stockholm.” You as a spouse are always welcome to join in, even if your partner won’t make it. You can check our calendar at http://www.kth.se/en/om/work-at-kth/relocation/calendar

On our website, www.kth.se/relocation, you´ll find lots of useful information and also on http://www.investstockholm.com/move-to-stockholm/

In order for you to get a bit more familiar with Sweden, before coming here I would like to recommend: www.thelocal.se and www.radiosweden.se

The BBC has published a story about Stockholm being the best city for working families, have a look here:http://www.bbc.com/capital/story/20151124-the-best-city-for-working-families

If you have any further questions regarding your move to Sweden, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Professional career support for spouses

https://www.kth.se/en/om/work-at-kth/lediga-jobb

Bringing a spouse In order to make the transition to KTH and Stockholm as smooth and beneficial as possible, KTH offers tailor-made career support for spouses. To give your spouse access to the program, the position you applied for needs to be for at least one year and an assistant professor or higher. The program does not guarantee that you will get a job, but provides a professional career coach which includes 8 sessions in three months. The aim is to make sure your partner gets the most out of her/his stay in Stockholm or becomes more employable on the labor market in Stockholm in a time range that both suits her/him and that is also realistic. There is no need to speak Swedish nor have an academic background. We welcome all spouses to the program. For further information, please contact [email protected] or visit KTH Relocation.
