of Oakley as selected by our read-ers. Thousands of votes were cast in more than 100 categories to identify the people and places you like most. You’ll see old favorites on the list plus a crop of newcomers that caught your eye, and we’ve honored them all with our Best of Oakley star.

We at the Oakley Press thank all our readers who participated. Reader input is important to us, and we couldn’t have done this without you. Three of our readers who voted won $100 in our random drawing, so if you didn’t vote this year, do it next year and you might put some extra cash in your pocket simply for casting your ballot.

Carol Bentley, above, isn’t sure how she’ll be spending her winnings, but perhaps she’ll find an idea in this section. Vera Lillis, center, would rather save her cash, and Sarah Sanford, below, is thinking of using her bucks to go shopping or go out to dinner. We recommend one of the local businesses honored in these pages by our Oakley readers.

Congratulations to our three winners, and kudos to the businesses and locals who were honored on this year’s Best of Oakley list.

Thanks to Our Many Loyal Customers

Thank you Oakley for voting us #1!

The Best of Oakley star is a beacon of community approval that should be displayed for all to see, but not all honorees have a place to display their stars. Some of the categories – we call them Lifestyle – are broader.

For example, Mt. Diablo won first place for Best View in Town. However, that’s one big mountain that doesn’t have a storefront window to hang a star, so we honor it here, where it was voted second to none.

Best Government Spending went to local parks. There are more than a dozen parks in Oakley and more are on the way. Nutmeg Park and Holly Creek Park opened last October, and Creekside Park is currently under construction. Soon there will be plenty of places to go to enjoy a picnic or let the rugrats play in the fresh air.

If you insist on choosing only one park to go to, the readers of Oakley Press picked Laurel Ball Fields as the Best Park category. Laurel boasts three baseball fields, a basketball court, picnic tables and a skating area. If you’re looking to play some tennis, you can go to the honorable mention in this category, Crockett Neighborhood Park, where you’ll find barbecue grills, a tot lot for the kiddies, walking trails and a large lawn area perfect for an impromptu game of soccer.

Crockett Neighborhood Park was also selected as the Best Place to Walk a Dog. You also voted Marsh Creek Glen Park as an ideal place to take your four-legged friend for a stroll through the lush grassy areas. Just watch out when Fido catches a whiff of the aromas wafting from the barbecues.

If you’re looking for a place for the family to grab some indoor fun, readers selected Oakley Delta Family YMCA as the Best Family Recreation Center, which offers loads of activities for everyone in the family. Kids can take part in Lego Camp while adults can have fun by taking a salsa dancing class, and teens can take the initiative to stay healthy by signing up for the teen-focused body strengthening class. If the family is

looking for a bouncing experience, there is also Pump It Up, the inflatable party zone. Come for a party or enjoy some pop-in playtime. Jump around and have a ball.

Oakley is a growing town, and this year, voters selected Shea Homes’ Summer Lake and Pulte Homes’ Magnolia Park as the Best Home Developments.

Once you’ve moved in and settled down, it’s time to take a tour of our fabulous town. Make sure to check out the new City Hall and Civic Center, which was selected as the Best Looking Building in town. Located at 3231 Main St., this is also the place to find Big Bear Diner, the police station and Civic Center Plaza Park. Another eye-catching building to fix your gaze on is the Morning Star Properties building, located at 3373 Main St.

If you’re giving friends a tour around the city, you’ll want to take them to Big Break Marina and show off our beautiful Delta. You might be able to catch a fishing tournament in progress, or you can sit and relax and listen to the music of The Last Resort, a local band that performs at the marina. You’ll also be able to grab a bite and sip colorful drinks in a tropical atmosphere once Coconuts Tiki Bar and Grill opens in late 2008/early 2009.

Your visitors should also see the beautiful architecture of the new City Hall building during their tour of Oakley. Make sure to mention that the opening of City Hall and the Civic Center was selected as Best News in 2007, along with the opening of the Highway 4 Bypass.

While you’re out and about, swing by Oak Tree Embroidery – the building was voted Best Historic Building.

And during your jaunt to local businesses, check out the YMCA if you haven’t already, but also stop by Fairview Heating and Air Conditioning. Both businesses were voted as Best Community-minded Companies in Oakley, so take a moment to drop in and say hi – and thanks.
