Our historic downtown district boasts dozens of great retail shops, and the wide variety of top notch dining establishments that are second to none. Downtown Bethel is a great place to stroll to check out the fine shops, have lunch or dinner and top it off with

a world class ice cream cone. In the summer months you’ll find lots of treats at our bi-monthly community market conveniently located on the municipal center lawn on Friday evenings. Our Stony Hill Business district out on the Rt. 6 corridor on the north end of town is rapidly expanding with many new shops and restaurants to visit, plus a weekly Saturday farmers’ market.

Bethel is home of many fine world-class employers, shipping to all points of the globe from our two primary business and industrial parks. Business leaders find Bethel highly attractive, due to its affordable real estate, easy access to rail and interstate highway transportation and our outstanding schools that make Bethel the perfect place for new employees to raise a family.

Our library is a real gem right in the hear of downtown Bethel, offering a wide variety of programs for children and adults. Bethel’s outstanding Parks and Recreation Department has more than 70 programs to keep families busy and we have one of the most active Senior Centers in the area, with a rich schedule of activities, luncheons, local excursions, and travel opportunities.

Our educational complex is one of the most unique in the state, with all school buildings and athletic fields conveniently located in a large central campus near the center of town. Our elementary, middle, and high schools have earned awards for educational excellence, and our local private elementary school, St. Mary’s has earned national Blue Ribbon status.

Of course, if you live here you already know this. But if you don’t I hope that you’ll pay us a visit. I think you will like what you find!

Sincerely,Matt KnickerbockerFirst Selectman

We have been supporting our member businesses since 1953. Our mission is to connect local businesses to one another, the town, the schools, and the community. We proudly represent the entire Town of Bethel, which includes downtown Bethel,

Grassy Plain, Stony Hill, and the Corporate and Industrial Parks. We are non-partisan and not affiliated with any political party, and we are not financed by any government agency. It is our goal to work with the leaders of Bethel and support a business-friendly environment that leads to economic development. We accomplish this by creating fun events that bring residents together and promote local business, host networking events to connect businesses, hold informative workshops, and sponsor events like Summer-Fest, BrewFest, WinterFest, Trick or Treat Street, and Restaurant Week. We strive to make sure that information is easily accessible on our website, in the office, and via social media.

What do we love about Bethel? What’s not to love! Our quaint village streets with unique shops and eateries, hiking/biking trails that are enjoyed all year ‘round, our town green that is busy with markets, summer concerts, and many special events hosted by our many civic organizations, the award winning school district, busy ball fields, and best of all tremendous community pride.

The spirit of the local business community is directly reflected in the Chamber, and the businesses contribute to the character of a community. We are proud to support the economic, educational, and civic interests of our Business community. We encourage you to use this business directory and community guide to support the businesses that support our community.

We invite you to contact us at the Bethel Chamber for current information, helpful tips, a calendar of local events, and general questions.

As your partner in your child’s education, it is our shared vision to make Bethel Public Schools a premier district in the state and nation and to be on the leading edge of educational excellence by providing a rigorous core education driven by a

technology-powered pedagogy and access to significant opportunities to learn and grow through authentic real-world experiences. We under-stand that the new global, knowledge economy calls all students to be innovators, critical thinkers and creative, collaborative problem solv-ers. As such our mission is to prepare students so they possess these skills and have the knowledge and background to work effectively with others in a truly global society. We are committed to providing such an inspirational educational experience that our graduates will be com-passionate, active citizens of the world and proud ambassadors of Bethel wherever their education and experiences may take them.

As you begin the process of joining the Bethel community, student registration, and immersion into our schools, I invite you to explore our websites, register your child online at www.bethel.k12.ct.us, contact our principals and PTOs and get a full picture of all that we offer students at every age. Much scientific research points to strong partnerships between families and schools as a strong factor in the success of children.

There are numerous ways to get involved in the schools and I urge you to engage with our parent/teacher organizations to learn of those opportunities. Our staff is here to assist you each step of the way. You can expect to encounter highly professional, engaging, and helpful individuals in every department of our system. Should you have any questions or concerns or need any assistance please feel free to contact our staff either via email or phone.

We look forward to meeting you in person and, again, extend a warm welcome to our schools!

GET IN on the

BUY LOCAL MOVEMENT!

Call it a backlash against the generic shopping experience, or call it a return to old ways, but shoppers everywhere are rediscovering the value of keeping their money in their own communities by simply shifting a small percentage of their purchases to local businesses. The effects are astounding. There are many ways to simply and gradually shift your spending to local businesses, and here in Bethel, it’s easier than ever!

• Visit the local farmers’ markets and the summer Community Market for great “grown and made in Bethel” products.

• Make an effort to do (at least) a portion of your holiday shopping at local retailers.

• Purchase “Bethel Bucks” – our own local “currency” – to give as gifts that keep your money local.

• Look for the “Shop Bethel” sticker in local store windows. It helps identify businesses that are committed to supporting the local economy

• Sign up for text alerts (see facing page) for local deals and specials

• Tell your friends and family about your commitment to sup-porting local businesses and why it matters!

NEW BUSINESS OF THE YEAREnglish Apothecary

English Apothecary is a Health Mart pharmacy that is owned and operated by Peter D’Aprile. They specialize in serving the Bethel community with fast, friendly and professional service. They know you by name and take the time to counsel you and answer your ques-tions. Not only is English Apothecary a pharmacy but a great gift shop as well. They carry a wide variety of specialty home goods, toys, cards, gifts, jewelry and more. English Apothecary gives generously to numerous organizations in town, and they support and promote shopping locally, which is evident just by taking a look at the unique products they carry.

Honorable Mentions: Byrd’s Books, Sal’z Pizza, Peachwave, and Panificio Navona.

RESTAURANT OF THE YEARFamous Pizza

Their story began in 1982 when George and Pauline Anastaskis passed through town and noticed a small pizzeria for sale at 5 P.T. Barnum Square. The idea was simple: “Make the very best pizza possible using our homemade dough, sauce, and cheese. Prepare them with the freshest meat and vegetable toppings.” The family has maintained an unwavering commitment to quality, to the community, to the staff, and its customers.

Honorable Mentions: LaZingara, The Putnam House, Sycamore, and O’Neills.

NONPROFIT OF THE YEARBethel Visiting Nurse Association

BUSINESS OF THE YEAREscape Salon and Boutique

Maria Rodrigues and Robin Miller have been proud owners of ESCAPE for over 27 years. The not-so-obvious message in the name ESCAPE (Everyone Sincere-ly Cares About People Everywhere) em-braces more than one philosophy and is demonstrated by Robin & Maria in every aspect of their business. Whether it’s pampering clientele, fundraising for local causes, or responding to regional and natural disasters, they strive to make our community strong and pros-perous. ESCAPE’s Team will make you look great on the outside. Shop their fair trade, eco friendly boutique and feel great on the inside too.

Honorable Mentions: Byrd’s Books, Caraluzzi’s, Gift Cottage, New Balance, Quality Gem and Silver Touch.

Get Rita’s. Get Happy! Because their business is treats, and their mission is happiness.

Honorable mentions: SkyZone of Bethel, Goodinuff Gift Shoppe, and The Square Creamery.

RESTAURANT OF THE YEARLaZingara

Imagine being in a tiny Italian village in Tuscany and walking into a beautiful restaurant on the town square. To your delight, you discover that the restaurant grows its own food and is THE place lo-cals go to have dinner, celebrate events, enjoy their business lunches and share a glass of wine after work. That is the feeling when you first arrive at La Zing-ara. It’s also home to a sibling, ECCO Rooftop Eatery and Bar. A casual, glassy bistro, the whole place basks in the sunlight and glows in the moonlight.

NONPROFIT OF THE YEARBethel Historical Society

The Bethel Historical Society collects, preserves, and promotes the history of Bethel through page, voice, film, and more, to convey the heart of the story.

When you want to know about your ancestors and history of your home and land, they’re the first place to turn. They identify, collect and exhibit significant historical materials related to Bethel’s rich history. They encourage excellence in research, documentation, and interpretation and act responsibly in the preser va tion of these materials, while providing public access. P UT DOWN THE TABLETS AND PHONES! Turn off the TV and video games! There’s an amazing realm to savor outdoors, and here in Bethel we are

fortunate to have abundant parks and preserves allowing for an authentic encounter with the sights, sounds, smells, and scents of outdoor life. From bustling playscapes to the solitude of wooded expanses to quiet waters for canoeing and kayaking, there’s a world of local opportunities to explore.

To entertain our younger children, Bethel has two major town parks: Meckauer and Parloa. Each of these offers swing sets, play spaces, and basketball courts with Meckauer boasting a 1.5 mile walking/jogging loop and beach volleyball courts. Adjacent to Meckauer, Bennett Park features a fishing pond as well as a pavilion and kitchen that are rentable for large gatherings or events. If nature and wildlife fascinate you, within town borders are Overlook Park off Nashville Road and Wolfpits Preserve on Wolfpits Road. These two nature preserves provide unique hiking, flora, and fauna. In Overlook one can enjoy hiking trails affording beautiful views of down-town Bethel and the surrounding area and several historic fireplace and foundation remnants. Camping is also permit-ted in Overlook with a permit from the Parks and Recre-ation Department. In Wolfpits Preserve, a 70+ acre sanctuary owned and maintained by the Bethel Land Trust, you will discover several miles of marked trails over a varied topography, a now defunct feldspar mine, a peaceful brook with several babbling waterfalls, a diverse ecosystem of wetlands and

hardwood and evergreen forests, ubiquitous stone walls and a beaver crafted pond. You will encoun-ter squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, skunks, the omnipresent deer, and sightings of coyotes, red fox, and turkeys along with a rare sighting of a bobcat. Added to these preserves is the newly pur-chased Franc Preserve on the corner of Plumtrees and Old Hawleyville Roads. Formerly a working farm, we are still discovering the many ecosystems to be found here along with the potential for nu-merous outdoor activities including hiking, school field trips and, perhaps in the future, a community garden and nature center.

Straddling the boundary between Bethel and Redding are two very popular Connecticut State Parks: Putnam and Huntington. Put-nam State Park is one of the state’s premier historical parks where you will encounter the site of the en-campment of General Israel Putnam and his army during the Revolu-tionary War. A self-guided tour around the encampment reveals the remnants of stone foundations that once sheltered soldiers, officers, supplies and ammunition. Collis P. Huntington State Park, located on Sunset Hill Road, makes available a diverse collection of outdoor activities. Seven miles of old carriage roads are used for hiking, jogging, biking, cross coun-try skiing, and horseback riding. The four large ponds located in the park are exceptional waterways for canoeing and kayaking, and for fishing (with a state license). In winter the frozen waters are wonderful sites to try out the long- forgotten art of pond skating. If you’re up for a serious hike, but don’t feel like taking the drive to the Appalachian Trail (which runs through the nearby town of Kent). Bethel has in-town options too! Bethel Land Trust’s Enchanted Trail begins at the south-ern entrance of Wolfpits Preserve, accessed off of Jennifer’s Way off of Aunt Patty’s Lane West. This well-marked footpath (yellow diamond shape with an elm tree on it) mean-ders through the preserve exiting on

Wolfpits road. The trail follows roads until it reaches the boardwalk sec-tion along Walnut Hill Road (about a quarter mile in from Plumtrees). This section leads to Bennett Park rambling through the wetland be-hind houses on Plumtrees. Ambling along the board-walk and footpath one feels as if they were lost in a backwoods bog far from civilization. The thick growth of fragmites and cattails veils the clamor of traffic and sur-rounding sounds of civilization. Be aware though, the boardwalk only travels halfway to the park. Once it ends you are faced with tall grass and sometimes mucky footings. Another alternative for hardcore hiking is the Ives Trail that

runs through Bethel’s Terre Haute Property and adjacent Tarrywile Park in Danbury. This meandering trail currently spans 14 miles from Ridgefield to Bethel and is planned to eventually continue along the Norwalk River all the way to the Long Island Sound. The entire trail is yet to be completed but the sec-tion through Tarrywile is ready for the walking. blazed with a “treble clef” marking to honor its namesake composer, Charles Ives. As you can see, there’s no reason to stay cooped up in front of a screen with only the sunbeams glittering through the windows to remind you of the great adventures awaiting right outside your back door. Get outside and get active!

SENIOR AMERICANS RESOURCES 51 Milwaukee Ave

Senior Americans Resources, an independent agency special-izing in health insurance products for people on Medicare, is celebrating its 25th year in Bethel this Fall. Started by Bill Caron in October, 1989, the agency has since grown to include health and financial products for the under-65 market as well (through its sibling brand, Insurance Financial Resources), including the newest plans available through the Connecticut exchange under the Affordable Health Care Act.

In 2012, Bill was joined in the business by his son, Clay Caron, a graduate of the Jack Welch College of Business at Sacred Heart University. Together they represent a wide variety of com-panies offering Medicare Supplement, Medicare Advantage, Prescription Drug Plans, Long-Term Care Insurance, Life Insurance, Fixed Annuities, Final Expense, and the new Exchange plans.

Bill has been a featured speaker and supporter of the Bethel Senior Center for many years. In addition to the tradition of quality customer care established by his father, Clay has brought the business into the age of technology with the addition of website design, graph-ics, social media, and the same enthusiasm that Bill brought to the business 25 years ago.

HOLLANDIA NURSERIES103 Old Hawleyville Rd.hollandianurseries.com

The nursery was started in 1949 by a gentleman by the name of Everet Havens. He grew several varieties of spruce and pine, in addition to fir trees. Havens’ Farm was also famous for its strawberries, cauliflower and asparagus. In 1964 Hollandia took over the nursery and continued growing trees and vegetables. Hollandia expanded the growing operation and today we grow millions of annuals and perennials, in addition to our trees. In the Spring of 2014 Hollandia celebrates 50 years in business with the same people who started it. 65 years of horticultural experience and 50 years of horticultural excellence continue to thrive in the great little town of Bethel! After 50 years in business in the area, our management team at Hollandia Nurseries is qualified to answer all of your questions. Although things have changed over the past 50 years, Hollandia still remains the same, focused on customer service and superb quality of plants. From all the folks who work here, We Thank you!

Shepard’s, a Company on the Move!Shepard’s, a century-old moving and warehousing com-pany based out of Henry Street, has been expanding the residential side of its business to provide ongoing stability for the company’s future.

50YEARS

100YEARS

CELEBRATING BETHEL’S BUSINESS LEGACIES

Half of the company’s moving business is for corporate clients, including employee relocations and transporting high value equipment for Danbury area manufacturers. The other half is residential, warehousing & fulfillment. Shepard’s ability to grow the residential business is due to quality customer service and a culture throughout the company that pays attention to the details and being on time. They work hard to put the customers’ mind at ease and exude confidence.

They achieve this by employing professional movers who have all received background checks, are uniformed and carry company badges with photographs. The company also provides 24 hour

tracking through its website and has a loss ratio of less than one percent, one of the lowest in the industry.

Shepard’s was recognized by Mayflower Van Lines last year with the company’s 2013 Customer Choice Award out of more than

300 operators throughout the country. The award is based on customer surveys that are provided to clients after every move. Bethel is proud to have

committed businesses like Shepard’s.

BELARDINELLI TIRE7 Beach St.belardinellitire.com

Belardinelli Tire Company has been providing Bethel and the surrounding towns with quality goods and excellent customer service for over half a century.

Tulio Belardinelli started in the tire business when a friend’s father was looking for some help. In July of 1961 Tulio opened Belardinelli Tire. What started as strictly a tire business has evolved into a full service automotive facility. These services include: emissions testing, batteries, belts, hoses, brakes, oil changes, shocks, struts, heating, air conditioning and more.

The business is truly a family affair as both of Tulio’s daugh-ters, Lisa Taylor and Sharon Johnson, as well as his son-in-law Michael Taylor have been working alongside him for years. His dream of having a multi-generational business is coming true because his grandsons Jared Matthews, Dylan Matthews and Zachary Taylor are also working there and will someday take over the business.

The key to Belardinelli Tire’s success has been focusing on the customer, and giving back to the community of Bethel. Thank you Belardinelli Tire for being such an integral part of the community for these many years!

YMCA CHILDREN’S CENTER57 Grassy Plain Street regionalymca.org/childcare.html

Ryan Grows at the YMCA’s Children’s Center

Ryan’s parents had been looking for a place where he could learn, grow and connect with other children. After seeking out many places they felt the Regional YMCA Children’s Center was the best fit. Ryan and his family soon discovered that he was was able to do just that at the Y: learn, grow and connect.

Being an only child, Ryan struggled to make friends and be social. However, enrolling in the Children’s Center gave him the opportunity to make friends and to interact with people from different backgrounds. His parents say they have peace of mind knowing their son is in a nurturing environment and have seen him grow academically with the assistance of the teachers who are there to answer his questions and provide guidance when he needs it most.

“His time at the Y is structured enough to be safe and pro-ductive, but has enough leeway to allow him to unwind and just be a kid,” said his mom, Morgan. “He’s given a healthy snack, time to do his homework and enough free time to build friendships.

“The childcare program has really changed our perception of the Y. It is so much more than a gym and a pool. I would certainly recommend it to anyone needing an after-school or pre-school program for their child.”

The Y believes that all children deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve, under the guidance of adults who care about them and believe in their potential. The Y strives to help children devel-op the skills they need to prosper academically, emotionally and physically.

The YMCA Children’s Center offers year-round NAEYC accredited Preschool programming to 150 children ages 18 months to 5 years. The School Age (ages 5-12) program offers before/after school activities, as well as summer camp programming, to 155 children.
