Donkey: Grandpa Bernie, born around 1974, was found living by himself without enough food on an Indian reservation, now needs to eat soft food.Dog: Dr. Duke, living at Old Friends, born in 1991 and had been outside on a chain his whole life, brought to Best Friends because his Kanab owners were moving and thought he was too old to adjust to a new climateHorse: Riley, born 1988, she came to Best Friends with a dislocated fetlock that received no treatment for months, she's seen orthopedic surgeons for a long and painful recovery, but still maintains a gentle deameanorPig: Bunny:Cat: Pessa, she was a stray who was born without any eyes, life on the streets is tough enough for healthy felines, but certainly no place for a sightless cat. She was shy when she first came to Best Friends, but is now very playful and affectionate and does not let her disabilty slow her down at all.

Mule: Gypsy, born 1990, a huge and very intelligent mule, brought to the sanctuary fearful of being caught due some trauma in her past, her family stopped riding her and didn't want to send her to the auction for slaugher, so she came to Best FriendsDog: Kaya, about 6 years old, found on an Indian reservation and one of her rear legs is shorter than others, it is believed she had been hit by a car, she has been adoptedGoat:Cat: Cybella, born in 1986, she was the cat of a Best Friends founder who passed away, she is both FeLV & FIV+, but still has the desire to climb up on people's shouldersOwl: Bird: Jazzy, is a Green Cheek Conure, who lived in a home with several larger parrots, and she was injured by one when her beak was bitten by one of the larger birds, she has now recuperated at Best Friends and is a real "charmer."

• In 1987, approximately 17 million animals were euthanized in shelters

• By 1998 the it was reduced to fewer than 5 million animals

• Still too many, so Best Friends promotes:– Spay/Neuter

– Adoption

– Public Awareness
