Dear Friends,

A few days ago an elephant, which was drugged for the purpose of being radio-collared,

collapsed and died in the forests near Periyanaickenpalayam. A very sad commentary on

human interference with nature. The authorities involved informed us that normally this does

not happen and that the drugged elephant fell on its chest and therefore could not breathe.

I wonder if the elephant knew that it is not supposed to fall on its chest when drugged. When

drunken men fall in all kinds of postures how would an elephant know how to fall correctly?

I recall an article written by a famous Czech writer Jan Skacel about 'Animals and Men'. He

felt that it would be impudent for a mere human to write about animals, who are natural and

beautiful creatures who refuse to wage wars, to rob on the highways or tell lies. He also goes

on about an urban child visiting a farm for the first time, who wanted to know why cows have

gloves between their legs. This kid who had already seen a lion, a tiger, an iguana and an

elephant in the zoo, was frightened to death on seeing his first goat.

Fortunately our kids are not so ignorant. However it is very important to educate our

children that humans are not the only privileged survivors on earth. We have to learn to live

and share with other creatures. We have already plundered much of their natural habitat and

it is time we stopped. The only animal that is capable of cruelty is the human. Let us realize

that cruelty is bad and especially evil if directed towards other animals.

Method of preparation

l All purpose flour - 2½ cups

l Eggs - 4

l Sugar - 2 cups

l Milk - 1 cup

l Vegetable oil - ¾ cup

l Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon

l Baking powder - 2 teaspoons

l Take the sugar and eggs in a large bowl and beat them together till the mixture thickens. Add the remaining ingredients and beat the mixture for 1-2 minutes.

l Now the batter is ready to be transferred into the baking pans that are already greased and floured.

l Once done, bake them in the oven that is preheated to 350°F. It will take around 30 minutes for the cake to get baked. Once baked, allow the cake to cool before applying frosting.
