HST-V2-1 - edition: 15.09.00 BESI hydraulic actuators, type HSTP, are available in double-acting and single-acting spring-return design, and benefit from the high oil-pressure level – 100 up to 135 bar, on request up to 160 bar; thus they offer comparably small overall dimensions. They may be installed at any place – submerged below medium, in dry spaces, on deck, and in hazardous areas. Double-acting ¼-turn actuators need 2 hydraulic pipe connections for the supply of each valve; for spring- return valves only 1 hydraulic supply pipe is necessary. For easy installation we recommend endless pipes from coil, preferably bundled pipes, comprising 2 or more hydraulic lines. Torque The ¼-turn actuators provide continuous torque over the full swivel range, due to the transmission of hydraulic pressure via “rack and pinion”. In case of spring-return actuators, torque will be subject to the actual spring forces acting against the hydraulic pressure. They provide sufficient residual force for safe closing in case of control-medium failure or after closing signal. Position Response Valve position can be effected by limit switches mounted externally to the actuator, or by volume transmitters installed inside the central control unit – which may be the solenoid valve cabinet. The volume transmitters provide an inexpensive – but very precise and reliable – signal transmission, which eliminates the need for additional cabling to the valves. Volume transmitters are type-approved by Germanischer Lloyd and are accepted by all major classification societies. Further, 0 to 100%-indication and control is rendered with a potentiometer device. Medium Failure Single-acting spring-return valves will close immediately when the hydraulic pressure is released by signal or failure. The closing speed is controlled by a throttle in order to avoid water hammering effects. Double-acting actuators have the disadvantage of an inexact position on failure of control medium, i.e. the valve position may change in an uncontrolled manner. To avoid such adverse effects, external control blocks with controlled double-check valves are available; they prevent any change in the valve´s position when without control power. Emergency Operation If necessary the actuators can be equipped with quick connector couplings for connecting a portable manual emergency pump. For actuators installed inside tanks control blocks with these couplings are arranged outside of the tanks nearby and connected to the concerning actuators by hydraulic piping, thus allowing their manual control.

BESI hydraulic actuators, type HSTP, are available in double-acting and single-acting spring-return design,and benefit from the high oil-pressure level – 100 up to 135 bar, on request up to 160 bar; thus they offercomparably small overall dimensions. They may be installed at any place – submerged below medium, in dryspaces, on deck, and in hazardous areas.Double-acting ¼-turn actuators need 2 hydraulic pipe connections for the supply of each valve; for spring-return valves only 1 hydraulic supply pipe is necessary. BESI produces hydraulic single-action spring-return actuators type HSTP-F. In first attempt they weredesigned to ensure a defined fail-to-safe position – open or closed – when without control power. As benefitthey proved very economic - both as single unit and ready installed in a system - because of their single-lineconnection. Hydraulic actuators operate at an oil-pressure level of 100 up to 135 bar - on request up to 160bar – and offer very small overall dimensions. They may be installed at any place: below medium, in dryspaces, on deck, and in hazardous areas. Single-acting ¼-turn actuators need only one hydraulic pipe for theirsupply. For their easy installation we recommend endless pipes from coil, preferably bundled pipes.TorqueThe provided torque of spring-return actuators is subject to the actual spring forces necessarily acting againstthe hydraulic pressure. The actuators have to be selected with regard to the residual forces needed for safeclosing (or opening) in case of control-medium failure or after closing signal. Their sizes fit to all commonapplications in the shipbuilding industry.Position ResponseThe valve position can be detected by limit switches mounted externally to the actuator, or by volumetransmitters installed inside the central control unit – which may be the solenoid valve cabinet. The type-approved BESI-make volume transmitters are accepted by all major classification societies. They provide aninexpensive but very precise and reliable signal transmission, which eliminates any electric cabling to thevalves. This ensures economic installations even in hazardeous areas of a ship.Medium FailureSpring-return valves will close immediately when the hydraulic pressure is released by signal or failure. Theclosing speed is controlled by a throttle in order to avoid water hammering effects.Emergency OperationAs a unique safety feature the actuator provides a second independent piston for manual operation. Thisredundancy allows emergency operation completely independent from the hydraulic circuit, important insituations where the hydraulic circuit may be deferred. For manual operation a portable hand pump can beconnected to the actuator with a quick connector coupling. Spring-return actuators under medium will beconnected to an accessible control block outside the tank.

SelectionSpring-return actuators are applicable for all valves for which fail-to-safe function is mandatory or acceptable.Because of their single-line connection they ensure more economic installations even for short distances,compared with double-acting actuators with slightly lower unit price.
