Berthoud Eagle May 2012Principal to ParentAmazing as it seems we are in the last month of school! This year has been packed with learning, growing and developing for all of us. Teachers and students have so much they still wish toaccomplish this year and they will be working up through the very last day to do it! Thank you forencouraging your children to remain focused on learning each day as we finish up this year.I also want to thank you for your continued support of your children and our school. I am delighted tobe part of this amazing school community and thank you for all you do each and every day for yourfamily, our school and the Berthoud community.

Due to continued budget cuts we will be having some larger classes this next year and will bereducing our staff to accommodate the reduced funding. It is a complicated process that includes avariety of components that often hinge on decisions in other buildings. We do not know the positionsof all of our staff members yet, but I will share with you what I know so far. Mrs. Glynn will continue infifth grade and Mrs. Ewing will complete her two year loop. In fourth grade Mr. Jones and Mrs. Lampwill continue and Mrs. Rude will complete her loop. Miss Fogland will step into the Instructional Coachand Academic Support role as Mrs. Gerler moves to third grade. We do not yet know who will be theadditional third grade teacher. Mrs. Fraley will continue in second grade, Ms. Kincaid will start a newloop in second grade and we do not yet know who will be the third teacher at this grade level. Mrs.Carmichael and Mrs. DeGrande will continue in first grade and Mrs. Mirich will move to our all daykindergarten position. Mrs. Lessman will be teaching a half day kindergarten position as well.

Throughout this year Berthoud Elementary has been implementing PBIS or Positive BehaviorInterventions and Support. We have learned a great deal about using the SOAR acronym withstudents. Students who have even more explicit understanding of what is expected in various areasof the building and playground is very beneficial. We are also continuing to refine our use of the newBehavior Reports, which are different than the previous pink slips. The Behavior Reports are intendedto be used as a means to communicate with parents about their childs behavior, and as aninstructional tool to help the student understand the behavior change that needs to be made. It is areport about the behavior and the consequence, not a consequence itself. Additionally, we areconsidering how to weave our Pillars of Character, the concept of bucket-filling and the Bully Blockerstogether as a comprehensive program for our students.

May your adventures enrich you and your familys lives, and have a wonderful, relaxing summer!

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. LoJeske

Teacher AppreciationThe Thompson School Districts Board of Education recently proclaimed May 7th 11th as Teacher

Appreciation Week. In the proclamation it states that teachers are the cornerstones of our schoolsand are entrusted with the educational development of our citizens; at Berthoud Elementary, we takethat trust seriously and know that our teachers will forever be in the minds and hearts of our students.I hope you will find a moment to thank our teachers for all that they do to educate your children.

Lunchroom News IMPORTANTFriday, May 11th will be the last day students can charge items against their lunch accounts. Thismeans unless a student has money in their lunch account, they will not be permitted to charge their

meal and pay at a later date. If a student has money in their account they are free to use it up to theend of school. We will be serving breakfast on the last day of school. Please note that we will notbe serving lunch on the last day of school since students will be released at noon.

The reason for implementing this no charge policy is to minimize the number of accounts that will bein arrears at the end of the school year. If you have any questions, please contact Nancy Hampsonat 613-5117.

During the last week of school the menu will be the Managers Choice. An announcement will bemade the day before regarding the menu for the following day. As a reminder, breakfast is from 8:15to 8:30. Students who do not arrive on time may not get their first choice of foods. Thanks in advancefor your cooperation.

New News from the KitchenWe are going to pilot a new program with our Kitchen next year. If students grow a garden thissummer and bring in their left over produce, the kitchen will clean and serve it during lunchtime. Wewill provide more details when we return to school next fall. Have a great Summer! MonicaKoldewyn

Flip-flopsAs the weather has become warmer we are seeing more and more of our students wearing flip-flopsto school. In the past, we have received visits to the front office and health office because childrenare experiencing injuries to their feet or their flip-flops are breaking at school. Please encourage yourchild and/or children to wear sturdier shoes to school for their safety. We understand the desire forcooler clothing during warm weather. Please remember that at school we prefer to have more modestchoices in our students attire. Students should avoid wearing spaghetti straps, and straps should be

a minimum of 1 inch, and also no short shorts please. Thank you!!

Jammin MinuteBerthoud Elementary incorporated Jammin Minute ideas for one of our after school clubs. JamminMinutes is a one-minute fitness routine that includes 5 very simple exercises that kids (and staff) cando while either standing at their desk or sitting in a chair. Our after school club involved 20 studentsfrom grades 3, 4, and 5. Staff sponsors were Mrs. Lamp, Mrs. Davies, Mrs. Courtight, Mrs. Kincaid, and Ms. Allshouse. The students were to think about Colorado topics, possibly something theylearned from social studies. Then, they chose their favorite topics and came up with movements togo along with them. Each group presented their routine and everyone voted for their one favoritefrom each group. The final week was spent rehearsing their routine and recording it. The studentsdid an amazing job and really enjoyed the process. Go tohttp://jamschoolprogram.com/for moreJammin Minute information.
