Folk and Ethnographic Art The kaleidoscope of folk and ethnographic collections encompasses reverse glass paintings, carrousel figures, funfairs, hundreds of paperweights; furniture, pottery, textiles, glass and jewelry from Asia, South America and Europe; masks, sculptures and other cult objects from Africa and the South Seas, a vast amount of popular prints and posters, and much, much more … In addition to Buchheim’s “Buffi Circus” and “Ditti’s (Diethild Buchheim’s) Leaf Collage Menagerie” there are numerous works of outsider art by self-taught artists, like the masterful woodcarver Hans Schmitt, the farmer-painter Max Raffler, the ventriloquist Josef Muskat and the Parisian “naïve” artist Hector Trotin. It is impossible to reduce Buchheim’s unique “total work of art” concept and collection cosmos down to a single common denominator – although his passion for direct, animated and expressive forms, bold colors and complicated craftsmanship may suggest a possible path through this creative pandemonium. The lively museum – Rotation of museum holdings, special exhibitions and events Visitors who have been to the Buchheim Museum only once do not really know the collection at all. In addition to the yearly rotation of works on paper in the Expressionist Galleries, there are special and cabinet exhibitions. Tours, lectures, workshops and other events are devoted to a more in-depth look at special topics surrounding the collection. Buchheim’s “Grüne Galerie/Green Gallery” in Feldafing In an old villa in Feldafing, where former Imperial Chancellor Gustav Stresemann spent his summers, Buchheim lovingly set up his most original and authentic “Museum of Imagination” in the 1980s. This little gem can only be visited during guided or reserved tours. Dates at www.buchheimmuseum.de, Reservations: Tel. +49-8158-99700 A Painter’s Collection In order to fully understand Buchheim’s “Art and Curiosities Collection”, it is important to get to know the painter and artist Buchheim: because Buchheim - even as a young boy considered a painting wunderkind - was a visual person. What he took in with his eyes was not only transformed into the subject matter of his paintings and photos, but also of his novels. Seeing was his way of experiencing and understanding the world. With each new work that found its way into his collections, he conquered another new bit of territory. Buchheim didn’t just search, he found. Classifications like “valuable” and “worthless” and categories like “high” and “low” art held little meaning for him, and he never limited himself or specialized in one or just a few areas. Buchheim was open to the diversity of life. And was amazed, over and over again, at the variety of forms in nature and the limitlessness of human inventiveness. The Buchheim Museum lies north of Bernried in Höhenried Park, directly on the banks ofLake Starnberg. Groves of old trees, enchanted ponds, pagodas and art creations madeof wood and metal line the path from the visitor parking area (on the B2063 state road)to the museum itself.

The Architecture – A Home for the Buchheim Collections

A multipartite and open building, designed by the architect Günter Behnisch, reflects theextraordinary diversity of the collections of the painter, photographer, publisher, art bookauthor and novelist Lothar-Günther Buchheim (1918 – 2007): The legendary core of thecollection, works by the Expressionists, in particular the painters of the artist group“Brücke” (1905 –1913), are exhibited in spacious halls. The more intimate spaces of thetwo multi-storied “towers” are devoted to folk art and ethnographic collections, as wellas to Buchheim’s own work. A special attraction is the twelve-meter deck that extendsover the lake. On a clear day, the view stretches from the town of Starnberg to the Alps.

Four Museums under One Roof

Over a period of around 40 years, Buchheim pursued a museum concept that was andremains to be in sharp contrast to the conventional curatorial practice of separation –here a painting gallery, there an ethnographic collection, a gallery for works on paper,a museum for non-European art, etc. Instead, the individual collecting areas overlapand connect with each other, resulting in encounters between several world culturesand an exciting dialogue between the art of the Expressionists and their inspirationalsources from Africa and the South Seas.

Masterpieces of Expressionism

The collection that Buchheim amassed for the most part during the 1950s encompassesan unusually broad spectrum of Expressionist art of outstanding quality. At the heartof the collection are paintings, watercolors, drawings and prints by the artist group“Brücke” whose members included Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel and KarlSchmidt-Rottluff, as well as, for a short time, Max Pechstein, Emil Nolde and OttoMueller. After a late-Impressionist early phase, the artists developed an expressivevisual language that is characterized by reduced and compact forms, bold colors, monumentality and linearity, inspired by African and Oceanic art and influenced byGauguin, van Gogh, Munch, the “Fauves” and woodcuts from the Middle Ages.

The holdings of the Buchheim Collection provide not only an impressive overview of“Brücke” art, which signals the start of modern art in Germany. Commonalities anddistinctive differences among the individual artists are also highlighted, as is the inter-relation between their watercolors, drawings, prints and paintings.

Works by Lovis Corinth, Max Beckmann and Oskar Kokoschka, as well as the secondgeneration successors of the Expressionists, are arranged alongside the “Brücke”pieces. Watercolors and works on paper by Otto Dix form a bridge to the realistic artstyle of the 1920s.

Since its world tour in the early 1980s, the Buchheim Expressionist Collection hasenjoyed an international reputation.
