My purpose in applying for graduate study in nanoscale science and technology at University of
California, Berkeley is to become a professional researcher and educator in these fields. I feel that I need
academic preparation beyond my undergraduate education in order to make the meaningful technical
contributions to society in my career. My main motivation for applying to the Electrical Engineering and
Computer Science program at UC Berkeley stems from the presence of numerous outstanding faculty
members ith research interests aligned ith my on.
My passion for the !ature at the nanoscale has developed as a gradual crescendo rather than in subito
steps. My self"motivated research on #uantum confinement effects on the electrostatics of nanoscale
M$S structures at the end of %rd year gave me the maiden insight into a #uantum phenomenon in
nanostructure. &eveloping our on self"consistent '"& Schr(dinger")oisson solver, I along ith one of
my friends e*amined the effects of ave function penetration on the electron distribution in nanoscale
double gate M$S+Es. his research having on us the 'st pri-e in IEEE "'/ Student )aper Contest 0/1
spring"boarded our confidence to take up harder research challenges. 2s I started my senior year
research on computational nanoelectronics under )rof. 2nisul 3a#ue, my first challenge as to find a
suitable topic that as tractable under our capability and computation resources and through hich e
can make a tangible contribution to this field. I delved through current research on nanoscale device
modeling and through Int0l echnology oadmap for Semiconductors 4IS5 to capture device scaling
trends and familiari-ed myself ith the different device simulators available at the nano3UB
4http677.nanohub.org5. I found that, although effects of ave function penetration into gate o*ide
on different parameters 4gate capacitance, drain current5 of bulk M$S+Es have been e*amined, 8"&
effects, such as &IB9, hich are e*tremely important to assess the effects of scaling on device
performance, have alays been neglected in such studies. 3ence, e decided pursue a systematic study
of ho ave function penetration effects on ballistic drain current evolve ith the scaling of dimensions
4gate length and silicon body thickness5 of nanoscale double gate M$S+Es using a 8"& #uantum ballistic
model. Besides taking courses like :Semiconductor &evices; and :$ptoelectronic &evices; in my senior
level for this research, I took up the venturesome task to master the most advanced concepts in
#uantum transport 4

this group also interests me. Besides, I am also interested in )rof. >avey0s ork on nanoire fabrication
and )rof. Chang"3asnain0s research on nano"optoelectronics.
2s I see my 8nd year students grasping eagerly and proactively ideas of Moore;s la, nanomachines,
top"don and bottom"up approaches in their first electronics course ith me, I feel that I have an innate
capability to convey basic and ne concepts and motivate students to e*plore and research. I ill be
instructing the course :Energy Conversion III0 in >anuary 0/D semester and I plan to introduce elementary
concepts of nano7micro"electromechanical systems into its traditional syllabus. I believe that by being a
professor of nano"science and "engineering in a research university, I can contribute to further
+eynman;s vision not only by advancing the state of the art, but also by illuminating ne avenues of
thought for my students. 3aving mingled ith the best minds of the South 2sia from backgrounds as
diverse as from fine arts to engineering at the 'st S22C University Students E*change )rogram at &elhi
in &ec. 0/, I could understand ho people from other disciplines vie the role of technology in shaping
society0s future and I could perceive hy it is necessary to guide technological developments to fulfill
society0s e*pectations. 2s the future of nanotechnology has inspired as much caution as optimism, I
intend also to utili-e my e*pertise into policy issues to safeguard its advancement toards a direction
that is peaceful and addresses some of the most intriguing problems of our society. University of
California, Berkeley ith her strength on nano"research and long history of producing veritable leaders
in the science and technology arena ill undoubtedly give me the perfect opportunity to fulfill these
academic and professional goals of mine.
