Khashayar Shakiba, MD, FACOG

Whether you are facing or considering surgery for Uterine Fibroids, Hysterectomy, Urinary Incontinence, Pelvic Organ Prolapse, Ovarian Cyst, Endometriosis or Pelvic Pain, Dr. Shakiba will determine if you are a candidate for minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery. Benefits of this procedure include minimal pain and scarring, less blood loss, shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery time than traditional open surgery.

Board-Certified Gynecologist, Fellow of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and a Certified Robotic Surgeon.

Dr. Shakiba works closely with his patients and their referring physicians throughout all phases of the procedure and welcomes his Fellow Doctors to join him for a case observation and discussion on the benefits of robotic-assisted surgery.

Dr. Shakiba is affiliated with the Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, NJ and Chilton Memorial Hospital in Pompton Plains, NJ.

World-renowned Bergen County singer-songwriter Janice Robinson (at right) belts out her hit “Dreamer” at last year’s BergenFest. (I’m there between my husband, Mark, and Gladys Ditroia.)

We couldn’t believe the number of entries we got this year in our Best in Bergen competition—more than 1,800. Kudos to all of you who voted for your favorite shop or eatery. The recogni-tion winners receive in Bergen Health & Life magazine (which iscirculated to more than 150,000 readers) helps to grow thelocally owned and operated businesses that we all love and that make our main streets special—so thank you! Check page 46 for the 2012 winners, all of which are invited to participate in our annual party and expo, BergenFest—so you can taste or experience their services for yourself. This will be BergenFest’s fifth year, and we’ve changed venues this year. Because we’ve outgrown our beloved Estate at Florentine Gardens, we’ll be at the Sheraton Mahwah Hotel. Don’t miss this event on Thursday, September 27, from 5 to 9 p.m.

Once you’ve scoured the Best in Bergen section, don’t dis-count the rest of this issue. It is packed with great articles, like our feature on alfresco dining (page 74), in which New Jersey caterer extraordinaire Laurence Craig invites us to his farm for a garden-fresh party. There you’ll find lots of decorating ideas and, best of all, exclusive recipes so you can host your own soi-ree before the summer breezes by.

Enjoy!

GREECE IS THE WORDFoodies and health enthusiasts sing the benefits of olive oil, but many of us haven’t even tasted the real deal—authen-tic Greek olive oil. Try the Euphoria brand, marketed by Teaneck native Lori Konstantopoulos, who imports the oil produced at her husband’s family’s grove in Messinia, Greece. The fresh, f lavorful oil is produced immediately after harvest, and each bottle is labeled with the date on which the olives were pressed. For the best taste, the oil should be consumed within two years of the press date, she explains. Another perk? The environmen-tal benefits: The family uses sustainable farming practices that promote bio-diversity and packages the oil in recycled glass. Get a bottle for $28 at euphoriaoliveoil.com.

CORRECTION In our July/August 2012 issue, we incorrectly stated that The Fountain Spa (201.327.5155, thefountainspa.com) is located in Paramus. The spa has two locations: Hackensack and Ramsey. We apologize for the error.

Your health coach is in Saddle River, your yoga class is in Tenafly and your post-workout massage is another gridlocked schlep from there. The quest for health and serenity can be a hassle. But opening this month in Paramus is Ethereal Health and Wellness (201.857.0777, etherealhealth.com), an inte-grated center for all your wellness needs. The facility, led by medical director Anthony Berlet, M.D., offers everything from spa services and custom-blended makeup to fitness and meditation classes to nutrition coaching and noninvasive pro-cedures by Dr. Berlet and cosmetic dentist Joseph DiSilvio, D.M.D. Also, for breast cancer survivors, health coachingand fitness classes are available under the direction of Ana Rosati, Pink Ribbon Program–certified specialist. “We want to help our clients achieve optimal health and timeless beauty in body, mind and spirit through ideal nutrition, better fitness, holistic healing, rejuvenation, personal growth and advanced aesthetics with unsurpassed kindness, care and customer service,” explains owner Rene Marie Walters. Membership

packages are offered at varying price points, or guests can purchase a la carte services.

HUMC EXPANDS TO ESSEX COUNTYHackensack University Medical Center, recently named the number-one hospital in the state by U.S. News & World Report, just welcomed a new member to its family. In July the Medi-cal Center and LHP Hospital Group Inc., a company based in Texas, bought Mountainside Hospital on the Montclair/Glen Ridge border. The hospital will now be called Hacken-sackUMC Mountainside. (The partners also bought the former Pascack Valley Hospital in Westwood and plan to reopen that facility in the spring.) Hospital executives say there will be no changes in services or staffing as a result of the acquisition.

You’ve spent months counting calories, lifting weights and doing crunches, but those last few pounds just…won’t…budge. The hips and the lower abdomen are notoriously stubborn spots for fat deposits, leaving “love handles” and a “belly bump” on even the most fit individuals. Sure, there’s always liposuction, but not all of us can afford the expensive procedure and its associated downtime. Instead, consider Coolsculpting, a painless, non-invasive procedure approved by the Fda in 2010 to reduce fat in the hips—and just last spring it was approved for use on the abs as well. “This is the first noninvasive procedure that actually works,” says david abramson, m.d., who offers cool-Sculpting at The Fountain Spa’s ramsey location. For the treatment, a physician uses a device that presses the targeted area between two plates and cools it—the extreme cold temperature causes the fat cells to shrink and, over a period of time, they are eliminated from the body. The procedure lasts from one to two hours, and patients can expect to see an average of 20 percent fat loss within several months. The cost varies depending on the size of the area being treated, but usually starts at $700.

When you’re young, no one expects you to know how to cook. The same goes for when you live in manhattan. (Thank you, carrie bradshaw, for illustrating this by storing shoes in your oven.) but now that I’m a Jersey girl and married with children, it’s getting embarrassing that I don’t know my shallots from my scallions, my souffles from my sabayons. enter chef rama ginde of wannabee Chef (201.503.0335, wannabeechef.com), a cooking school in cresskill. chef rama, a graduate of the culinary Insti-tute of america, offered to lead our staff in a cooking class to show off her studio and offerings. not being much of a cook, I reluctantly agreed (thanks to a push from our editor in chief, who is an excellent cook and was very enthusiastic).

We all assembled in Wannabee’s beautiful studio one day in July and were immediately won over by chef rama’s warm, encouraging style. She led us in making an Italian green salad with berry vinaigrette dress-ing, fried zucchini fingers, mini gnocchi and grilled chicken. The class was fun and entertaining, and I found myself enjoying cooking. (never thought I’d say those words!) even the more experienced chefs among us had a great time and learned new tips and techniques. and the meal we created tasted amazing.

Wannabee chef offers both private and group cooking classes for adults and kids, birthday parties and prepared foods you can pick up for lunch or dinner. (group classes for adults start at $65, group kids’ classes at $40 and birthday parties at $296.) I’m definitely going back, maybe for a Latin-themed class (chef rama grew up in Puerto rico and is of Indian descent). or maybe just cooking 101. —Marisa sandora

The weather has cooled down, and the leaves are about to change colors. What better time to get outdoors and see the state’s scenic parks? Take a bike and you can add to that a challenging cardio workout, a low-impact fat-burning exercise and a calorie-bust-ing activity (cycling burns about 550 calories per hour). Do it alone and push yourself to set and beat goals or bring a friend or join a biking group to add a social experience to your workout. But before you get started, heed these safety tips: Adjust your bike: Your leg should be slightly bent when the pedal is down, and the handlebars should be positioned just below the saddle. Take tools: You wouldn’t drive without a spare tire—the same preparedness makes sense for biking. Bring a tire tube, a pump and a patch kit (all available at biking stores). Follow safety rules: When on the road, always ride with, not against, traffic.

BEAT LOUSY LICEYour child has lice—now what? Before breaking out the comb and applying an over-the-counter pesticide, call Lice Lifters (licelif ters.com). Based in Clark (732.540.8145) and Fairfield (973.287.6067) and serving all of northern New Jersey, this company takes the tedious task of nitpicking to a new level. Lice Lifters uses a special device called the Louse-Buster (created by Larada Sciences in Utah) to apply heat to sections of the scalp in 30-second intervals. The direct heat and air volume kills 99 percent of the lice eggs—called nits—practically eliminating the possibility of reinfection. After the treatment, parents are instructed to apply Lice Lifter’s anti-lice solu-tion, which is oil-based and less harsh than store-bought products. The treatment cost is $175, which includes a LouseBuster session and a 30-minute comb-out. The solution is an additional $20 a bottle, and most children require two bottles.

WHERE TO GO: RINGWOOD STATE PARK features 25 miles of paved and unpaved trails, including 7.5 miles of moun-tain biking. The bike path at SADDLE RIVER ROAD AND ROCHELLE AVENUE in Rochelle Park/Saddle River is a three-mile asphalt trail and connects to the SADDLE RIVER AREA BIKE PATH, a six-mile paved path. Check with a local biking store for more recommendations.

When one thinks of a hot spot for shopping, dining and strolling, Hackensack might not spring to mind. But that could soon change due to an effort by a grassroots group called the Upper Main Alliance Special Improvement District (UMASID), made up of business owners who are working to revitalize the city’s Main Street. “We want Hackensack to be an area where people can eat, work, shop and play,” says Jerry Lombardo, UMA-SID chairman and owner of C.J. Lombardo Company, a local real estate firm. “Hoboken, Englewood and Morristown are examples of success stories, towns that have rebuilt their downtowns into places where people want to live.”

The city is on board too: This past summer, the council approved zoning changes on Main Street, which would allow for mixed-use development—combining commercial and residential use in one building. “We knew without people living here, it would be hard to develop a downtown—it needs a residential component to work,” says Lombardo. Other improvements include turning Main Street into a two-way street and opening the Hack-ensack Performing Arts Center this fall. Developers are currently expressing interest in the project and reaching out to the town council. “We are sitting on an economic engine here—we just have to get the engine started,” says Lombardo, adding that the approval of the zoning changes was a major breakthrough in his group’s efforts. “The city has been working in lockstep with us in making Hackensack shovel-ready for developers.”See for yourself: Get a taste of Hackensack at the city’s annual street fair on Saturday, October 6, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event, which takes place on Main Street between Passaic and Atlantic streets, will offer rides for both kids and adults, food vendors and live music from Graham Central Station, featur-ing Larry Graham of Sly and the Family Stone.

chickens. My father, Jim, eventually started growing produce, and I’ve expanded that. We now grow about 80 varieties of pro-duce. In addition to chicken and eggs, we have fresh turkeys and pork, we expanded the greenhouse and now offer a huge variety of plants, and we added a scratch bakery and a prepared foods kitchen to make things like our famous chicken salad. YOU HAVE DIVERSIFIED IN OTHER WAYS TOO,

RIGHT? PAM: Yes, we have a petting zoo that is completely free, and we offer birth-day parties year-round. We also do a lot of special events including a “farm day,” dur-ing which we cook up and serve everything we grow. We charge for the food, but the hayrides, pony rides and tours of the farm and chicken coop are free, and we educate everybody about what we’re doing. We do farm tours for all the schools and camps. We host Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, giv-ing them an educational walking tour of the farm in which they learn about irrigation and how crops grow and see the chicken coops. You’d be surprised to learn how many kids don’t know that a brown egg comes from a brown chicken and a white egg comes from a white chicken. TELL ME ABOUT THE HEALTHBARN USA PROGRAM

THAT YOU HOST. PAM: Nutritionist Stacey Antine had an idea for a kids’ nutrition pro-gram with farming, hoping that if kids could see where their food came from and be a

WHEN BARNEY ABMA CAME TOthe United States from Holland in 1929 and bought the farm in Wyckoff that is now Abma’s Farm, it was his vision that the land never be sold and that it always stay in the Abma name. Today the family farm’s operations are run by his grandson Jim and Jim’s wife, Pam. Also living and work-ing on the farm are Jim’s dad (another Jim) and mom (Judy), Jim and Pam’s sons, Josh and Jimmy, and Jimmy’s wife, Anna. Our head spinning with Jims, we sought out the proprietors for a chat:HOW DOES IT FEEL TO HAVE ONE OF THE FEW

FARMS LEFT IN BERGEN COUNTY? JIM: It feels good. It makes us really want to shine because we’re one of the only ones left. HOW HAVE THINGS CHANGED? JIM: The farm started as a mom-and-pop operation with a couple of pigs, a couple of cows and a couple of chickens, but in the late ’50s we changed to having all chickens—we had

about 20,000—and doing early morning egg routes, deliver-

ing fresh eggs to people’s homes. In the late ’70s, egg

prices went down and feed prices went

so far up that we just couldn’t compete with

larger bird operations, so we scaled down to 2,000

part of growing it and then making it, they’d be more willing to try different foods. So she called one day, and we decided this could be a really good partnership. She runs the pro-gram out of our party room and rents a plot that she and her students take care of.WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? PAM:

My commute! [Laughs] I like working with my family. There are pros and cons to that. The nicest thing is that you’re together all the time, and you’re working toward a common goal. The downside is that you don’t get to just be a family because you’re always working.JIM, HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT WORKING WITH FAMILY?

Sometimes you tell the kids to do something, and they’ll challenge you to do things differ-ently, which is good. But there are days when I want to say, “Don’t question me. It’s gotta be done this way, it’s gotta be done now and we’ll talk about it later.” WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT YOUR JOB, JIM?

I’m my own boss. If I want to do something different and experiment with a new crop or change displays, it’s mine to do. I love the creativity of it. And I think that’s one of the reasons why we have stayed in business so long. We’re willing to make changes and be creative and do new things. WHAT’S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE? JIM: Gettingthe word out about everything we have to offer and getting people to understand the diversity of crops that we grow right herein Wyckoff. —MARISA SANDORA

THE CHALLENGE In July, we selected Samantha and Janet Kilroe to take on the three-month challenge of improving their health from the inside out with the help of our expert advisory panel. Here’s what they’ve been up to:

FITNESS “They’re both very commit-ted,” says Debra Regan, general manager of Ethos Fitness & Spa. “They’re here on a regular basis, working with trainers, taking classes, attending events and

meeting with the nutritionist. They’ve become part of our community.”

DENTISTRY Janet and Samantha had their smiles improved through teeth-whitening procedures by Richard Bucher, D.M.D., of Laser Dentistry of North Jersey, who also removed a baby tooth in Samantha’s mouth. “Both women are very happy,” says offi ce manager Doreen Philippe.

FACE TIME Janet has met several times with H. William Song, M.D., of Omni Aesthetics. “I did a SmartLipo treatment on Janet’s neck and saw a big improvement,” says Dr. Song. He also performed an ultrasound procedure called Ultherapy to reduce sagging in Janet’s face.

Our utmost concern about our patients’ outcomes has earned Dellridge the honor of a “Deficiency Free Survey with Advisory Standards,” as well as a 5-Star CMS Rating.

Our 96-bed healthcare facility specializes in subacute care and rehabilitation services, in addition to providing long-term, respite and hospice care services. We have the ability to treat the most clinically complex patients, from diabetic therapy to complex wound care and end-stage congestive heart failure to hemodialysis monitoring. Our advanced level of care is physician-directed and outcome oriented, staffed 24-hours a day with registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and certified nursing assistants. Our extraordinary record of success meeting and exceeding discharge goals has enabled us to become a premier provider of services in the county.

Dellridge exceeds discharge goals with the help of a staff transition coach who follows each patient after they return home to ensure that they continue the healthcare protocols they received at the facility. “We want to avoid the need to readmit patients by giving them the education they need to take home with them,” says Anne-Marie Gauntlett, LNHA and Dellridge’s Administrator. In the words of one former patient, the smiles and love is felt throughout our facility. For more information, please visit us in person, or, click on our website to see why Dellridge is truly a family of caring.

f o r m o r e t H a n f i v e d e c a d e s , the van Dyk family has provided unsurpassed housing choices for seniors in northern New Jersey. In addition to long-term nursing care, van Dyk Health Care expanded its continuum of senior care services to include post-acute rehabilitation, assisted living and senior apartments for those looking for a more independent lifestyle. In 2010 and 2011, The van Dyk Manor of Ridgewood has been named one of America’s best nursing homes by u.S. News & World Report.

What truly sets these family-owned and operated communities apart from others, though, is its level of personal attention. They take care to hire the right professionals, most of whom become long-time employees. This sense of family extends to the residents and permeates throughout each and every one of their communities.

1 COUNTRY PANCAKE HOUSE 140 E. Ridgewood Ave., Ridgewood, 201.444.8395, countrypancakehouse.net It’s a panoply of pancakes, 112 to be exact. Fruity pancakes, nutty pancakes—even ones beyond your wildest imagina-tion, made with sausage, bacon, cheese, sour cream … you name it. There is an equally impressive array of waffl es, French toast and too many variations on the egg theme to count. Try the seafood egg frittata stuffed with shrimp, scal-lops, crabmeat and cheddar cheese, sitting atop a warm and hearty waffl e. O.M.G.

BARBECUE

1 CUBBY’S 249 S. River St., Hackensack, 201.488.9389, cubbysbarbeque.com This landmark has been dishing up Southern barbecue in Northern territory for 26 years. Tender baby back ribs, slow-cooked on the premises and finished in fin-ger-licking-good barbecue sauce, are the main draw here, as is Cubby’s owner Bob Egan. The rights to his book with Kurt Pitzer, Eating with the Enemy: How I Waged Peace with North Korea from My BBQ Shack in Hackensack, wereacquired by HBO Films and The Sopranos’ James Gandol-fini is attached to star.

1 SUGAR FLAKE BAKE SHOP 24-04 Fair Lawn Ave., Fair Lawn 201.796.3800; 257 Westwood Ave. Westwood, 201.664.1253, sugarflakebakeshop.com Sugar Flake’s one of the few remaining shops that bake from scratch. “We use real butter, not shortening,” says owner Amy Leyva. “We do it all: mix ’em, bake ’em, turn ’em, fi ll ’em, top ’em and sprinkle ’em. We take our time,” she says. And it shows. The cookies, artistically decorated, taste as great as they look. Your favorites: the sour creams (fudge inside, chocolate outside—wow!) and the raspberry fi ngers.

KID-FRIENDLY

Palisade Ave., Englewood 201.569.6267; 158 Franklin Ave., Ridge-wood, 201.612.5688, baumgartscafe.com Moms, dads, there’s nothing better than taking your kids to a restaurant where they’ll be welcomed, comfort-able and entertained. Kids enjoy the funky decor, the whimsically pre-sented food and most importantly, the homemade ice cream and soda fountain goodies. You get sushi and wine (liquor is served at the Edgewa-ter location), they get a burger and a milkshake. Everyone is happy. (Take note, it’s cash or AmEx only.)

PASTA

1 GRISSINI 484 Sylvan Ave. Englewood Cliffs, 201.568.3535 grissinirestaurant.com Owner Tony Del Gatto searched long and hard for an authentic Italian chef, fi nding one in Alberto Leandri, Venice-born and trained in Italy. Grissini’s head chef for the past 10 years, Leandri pre-sents pastas that are all homemade, and his elegant entrees keep the VIP crowd coming back. Dish you love: Taglierini Neri al Granchio (black squid ink taglierini pasta tossed with Dungeness crab meat in a delicate brandy sauce).

It’s that good. Co-owner John Campbell explains why: “We use strictly USDA prime, and only the best Black Angus, selected from the top ranches in the corn-belt states. We butcher our own beef and dry-age it to make it tender and fl avorful.” You like to share the “Por-terhouse T-bone for Two”—tender shell steak on one side and fi let mignon on the other. Three locations make it easy to get your fi let fi x.

RAW BAR

1 BIGGIE’S CLAM BAR 430 Route 17 South, Carlstadt 201.933.4000, biggiesclambar.com You used to have to go to Hoboken to enjoy Biggie’s famous raw bar, but not any-more. Biggie’s is Bergen County’s latest catch, and it’s still the best for clams, oysters, mussels, shrimp, scal-lops—whatever your heart desires. There is a full bar with a wide selection of draft and bottled beer, plus 15 televi-sions to catch all the games.2 Oceanos 2-27 Saddle River Rd., Fair Lawn, 201.796.0546

TAPAS

1 PINTXO Y TAPAS 47 North Dean St., Englewood, 201.569.9999englewoodtapas.com Pronounced “pin-cho,” this is a beautifully romantic Spanish restaurant steps away from Bergen PAC. Its tapas (think appe-tizers) are mini meals from Spanish heaven: crepes fi lled with crabmeat in piquillo pepper sauce, beef turn-overs, Serrano ham croquettes, creamy potato cubes basted in garlic and aioli sauce, to name only a few. The offerings are accompanied by a wide selection of Spanish, Portu-guese, Australian, Italian and South American wines. Buen apetito!

SUSHI

1 NAGOYA 1007 MacArthur Blvd. Mahwah, 201.818.9933, nagoyacuisine.com Owner Steve You goes to the Hunts Point Fish Market every day to hand-pick each fi sh. He buys only the highest grade and concocts some pretty creative rolls. Favor-ites are the “Lovers' Nest,” soft-shell crab tempura and fresh mango wrapped with eel, avocado, caviar and eel sauce, and the “Mind Eraser,” spicy crunch crabmeat and avocado topped with salmon, yellowtail, white tuna and red-hot miso sauce.

KIDS’ PARTY

1 Space OdySSey USa

491 S. Dean St., Englewood201.567.3810, spaceodysseyusa.netThis amazing indoor party place makes laser tag look like pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey. Your child’s special day could include a carnival party (there are rides!), a rock star soiree complete with a DJ or a glow-in-the-dark bowling bash (yes, real bowling lanes). Big enough for sweet 16s and bar/bat mitzvahs with 26,000 square feet of space, it’s perfect for smaller affairs too.

MARTINI

1 Martini Grill187 Hackensack St., Wood-Ridge 201.939.2000New day, new martini—well, maybe not that often, but the mixologists here love putting different twists on the basic vodka-vermouth cocktail. (Yes, yes, it used to be gin before Bond preferred vodka, and you can still get them with gin here.) Try the Jackie O: Stoli, apricot brandy, triple sec, pineapple juice and cranberry juice. Or the Spa-tini: organic cucum-ber vodka, triple sec, fresh mint, Diet Sprite and a splash of club soda.

She credits her stylists’ schooling through the pres-tigious Bumble and Bumble network (of which the salon is a member) for their expertise in blowout techniques. Depending on what level of stylist you choose—mentor, master or designer—prices for their four basic kinds of blowouts range from $15 to $50. You love the Bumble Blowout for sexy, beachy fullness.

1 JEWEL SPIEGEL GALLERY

30 N. Dean St., Englewood, 201.871.3577 jewelspiegelgallery.com There’s more to framing than meets the eye. There is the aesthetic, of course, but there’s also preservation—for example, using the proper matting, backing and glazing to protect art from deterioration. “Each piece has its own needs,” says Mary Moring, who, along with Kelly McGarry and proprietor Jewel Spiegel, knows how to handle any work, be it a rare print, a photograph or a paint-ing. FLOWER SHOP

1 DEAN STREET GREENERY 22 Engle St., Englewood, 201.816.0100 “A rose is a rose is a rose.” Gertrude Stein wouldn’t have said that had she come to this flower shop. There are flower varieties here like you’ve never seen: miniature calla lilies in different colors, cymbidium orchids, celosia cristata (looks like a brain), to name a few. Forget carnations and pompoms—there are no fillers in these elegant arrangements, only rare, stunning flowers presented in their signature “compact and clus-tered” style.

are you’ve wondered about it too. So have I, and I’m a trained psychotherapist. Not know-

ing my seers from my sensitives, my angels from my guides, I was more skeptical than spiritual when it came to intuitive healing. And yet I confess I was secretly thrilled to be asked

to explore the topic. Here was a guilt-free pass to be frivolous; to play ‘What if?’. What if I could communicate with a lost loved one? Heal a long-term illness? What if I could finally achieve that elusive balance I’d been searching for?

What is intuitive healing? The premise behind intuitive healing (also called energy healing) is that one’s own energy can be channeled to heal, pri-marily by removing “blockages” that are causing distress or disease or by maxi-mizing energy flow. Healers strive to help you create balance in all areas of your life: physical, emotional, mental and spir-itual. “Opening up” or “redirecting” your energy can lead to more love, less stress or the end of a chronic illness.

Society has always been slow to acclimate to new therapies. Years ago, meditation and yoga seemed outra-geous, but they are now mainstream. Psychotherapists now routinely use equine therapy, sand play and mindful-ness. Perhaps you’ve heard of Reiki, an energy therapy that has gained acceptance. With roots in Buddhism, Reiki is now used in mental health and substance abuse centers. All forms of energy healing incorporate a common thread: expanded listening. That’s right; the practitioners listen and sometimes hear things. Things you and I don’t.

hoW listening expandsHealers profess to tune into the energy we all emit—and sometimes to the “energy” of people who have died. These are our angels or guides. Judy Toma is an angel therapist in Montclair. “Religions have always had angels; it’s nothing new,” she says. “Ask for guidance, and you will get answers in the most powerful ways.” Toma says to notice the signs: the feather falling in your path pointing you in a direction, or the tingling sensation you get when something (or someone!) is wrong. “Those are your angels telling you what you need to know.”

Toma told me by phone that my angels said my juggling act wasn’t work-ing and to focus on the most important thing. Hmmm, you mean my three jobs as writer, therapist and full-time marketer might be a little much to handle?

Judith Orloff, M.D., is a board-certi-fied psychiatrist, an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Califor-nia-Los Angeles and a famous intuitive seer who says she’s used her psychic

powers to aid in police investigations. She practices “expanded awareness” and stresses practice, arguing that the more you focus on your intuitive sense, the sharper you’ll be. She maintains that while one “goes” to a healer, it’s really a two-way process. The healer clears a healthy path, but you have to be willing to see it and take it.

Freak me out, please My dad died 10 years ago. While I think about him often, I’ve never imagined him hanging around to guide me. In fact, I get my logical and scientific side from my dad, so even if I were inclined to consider the presence of spirits, I doubt he’d be the one I’d expect to show up. And yet, on a Saturday in June, that all changed.

My “mini session” with “Dr. Robert” Kandarjian, D.C., was arranged by Deb Peterson, the founder of Wellness Gala, a company that produces wellness events. Twelve years ago, her 7-year-old son developed Tourette’s syndrome, expe-riencing up to 90 tics an hour. After she

consulted every specialist from Colum-bia to Colombia, a friend insisted she see Kandarjian. Within months her son was cured. Eight years later, he remains so. Peterson quickly quit her corporate sales job and became Kandarjian’s champion.

My mini session? It morphed into a marathon! Either Kandarjian was immersed in his work or I needed way more healing than expected. I suspect it was a combination of the two.

Kandarjian has a calm and low-key attitude. He sat across from me and took a short history. We explored energy between our hands, which, strangely enough, I did feel. Then, while I was fully clothed, face up on a massage table, he performed a series of sweeping hand movements over my body, occasion-ally tapping a spot and removing “energy blockages.” Once, he emitted breath sounds that were reminiscent of Lamaze breathing. Throughout, he told me things about my family and myself, providing fairly directive advice on everything from my nutrition to my mindset.

I had been warned that Kandarjian might freak me out, and I had bravely (foolishly?) responded “Bring it on.” When he said, “Your father is here,” I thought, “Oh, really?” and did a little internal eye roll. Then he called me by the childhood nickname

“ incorporating new and

traditional modalities should

be a parallel process, with

‘complementary’ as the key word.”

that only my father used and that he had no way of knowing: “Deb-Deb.”

I promptly burst into tears.

what the doubters sayScientists attribute the perceived ben-efits of healers’ ministrations to three psychological phenomena. For each of these, here is the apparent benefit—and the debunkers’ explanation:

wishful thinking. Hopeful people are positive and upbeat—good things for the mind and body. Stress causes nega-tive physiological effects (the release of cortisol, strain on the heart), so lightness will have an opposite effect. skeptics say: It’s the individual’s pro-cess and disconnected from any actual practice by the healer.

bias confirmation. This is when you assign meaning to something so that it becomes true for you. Laura lost her mom on 11/11. She states that every day she just happens to look at the clock when the time is 11:11. She believes that her mom is connecting with her. skeptics say: Laura probably looks at the clock just as often at 5:02 or 7:33 but doesn’t notice. Believing in a healer may help you feel healed, but not because of anything the healer does.

communal reinforcement. If others believe it, it must be so, the thinking goes. Similarly, the more popu-lar intuitive healing becomes, the more that people believe it must work.skeptics say: The fallacy is that pop-ularity equals validity. Exercise belt machines, binding corsets, smoking and cocaine were all once popular, but that didn’t make them wise.

However, despite these doubts, the medical community has never been more welcoming of “holistic” medicine, which by definition acknowledges the role of emotional and spiritual imbalances in disease. Michael Gross, M.D., chief of sports medicine at Hackensack Univer-sity Medical Center and medical director of the Active Center for Health & Well-ness in Hackensack, is a self-described scientist who acknowledges the role of energy (or auras) in healing. “It would be arrogant to dismiss a strategy just because it can’t be traditionally mea-sured,” he says. “Incorporating new and traditional modalities should be a paral-

lel process, with ‘complementary’ as the key word.” Dr. Gross cites studies from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on energy fields and blockages that have led to the implementation of Reiki in almost every major cancer center and says that nurses have been trained for years in “healing touch” (manipulating energy fields around the body). “Some of these strategies have been around for hundreds of years,” says Dr. Gross, “and they’ve survived for a reason.”

New York Times bestselling author Bernie Siegel, M.D., recalls patients whose tumors shrank after they received radiation therapy. One problem: By mis-take, no radioactive material had been placed in the machine. Patients get better for no known reason, and doctors acknowledge a placebo effect often as high as 20 to 40 percent. Unlike the medical model, Dr. Siegel says, spiritual healing is not problem-based and there-fore is not negative in origin. He quotes Mother Theresa: “I won’t attend an anti-war rally, but I will be at the rally for peace.”

does that life come in a large?Jaye Regincos owns Thought in Motion, a cocoon of positive light and love in Montclair that she calls a “creation bou-tique.” Imagine going into Sephora for a lipstick, mascara and a blush. At Thought in Motion, you can shop for a relationship,

a career and good health. I’m not kidding. Regincos helps people transform dreams into reality. She says her success rate is 100 percent. I gave her the chance to amend that and she didn’t flinch. “All of us can achieve what we want in our lives if we do the work,” she insists. I left with an icon, an affirmation and a prescription. (No, I’m not telling you what it was for, but let’s just say I expect to be deliriously happy by next summer.)

my happy medium? We live in a sensory-assaulted, nature-deprived world. Quiet reflection and ‘listening’ to our heart, soul or gut have become activities that must be sched-uled instead of processes that occur naturally. As a therapist, I help people convert overwhelming confusion into manageable parts; self-healing turns out to be a similar process: settle, notice, trust. It takes some work but seems like simple emotional physics: A spirit in motion stays in motion—not a bad plan.

I believe if you nourish the soul, you nourish the whole. Intuition is our lost inner Sherpa guide, whatever form we assign it, and one can always use a guide. Going forward I will be accessing mine. Perhaps it will be through a professional healer or under a tree in my backyard, holding a rose quartz icon or simply holding onto the sense that someone I love, someone who used to call me Deb-Deb, is nearby. s

4 TIPS FOR INTUITIVE HEALINGAll of the healers interviewed for this article offered some version of the following tips for tuning in to your own healing energy and guides:

1. be sentient. Pay attention to your feelings and sensory impressions. 2. stay in the moment. Don’t regret the past or worry about the future. 3. focus on what you want, not on what you don’t have. 4. trust what you feel. Pause or act accordingly.

Of course, if you have medical concerns, consult a medical professional.

In a socIety where workdays are longer, paychecks are smaller and vacation time slips farther away with each workweek, it’s no surprise that statistics show that ameri-cans are less happy today than they were a few years ago. But we’re also getting savvier about what to do about it. By imple-menting these 10 steps in your daily life, you may find that a happier life is just around the corner!

1exercIse. thirty to 40 minutes of daily physical activity can help elevate your mood by releasing endorphins, often

referred to as “happy hormones.” consistent exercise has been proven to bring oxygen to your circulatory system, remove toxins from your body, improve the condition and tone of your skin, reduce blood pressure and decrease feelings of anxiety and stress.

2 avoId excess sugar. “Maintaining good nutrition is a crucial element in becoming happier every day,” says debo-

rah r. wagner, Ph.d., a psychologist based in ridgewood. “diet is an essential contributor to emotions, and one of the greatest saboteurs of a happy mood is extreme sugar intake.” But it’s o.k. to sample mood-elevating dark chocolate along with other uplift-ing foods such as spinach, walnuts, sunflower seeds, whole-wheat products such as bread, pasta and crackers, and bananas.

3 PractIce deeP BreathIng and MedItatIon. try exercises like yoga or Pilates, which both focus on breathing.

like meditation, these activities have been proven to help reduce stress and anxiety, leading to a more peaceful mood.

4 get enough sleeP. “lack of adequate sleep is another contributor to poor mood,” says dr. wagner. “Most ameri-

cans are mildly to severely sleep-deprived, and seven to eight hours or more of sleep are required. daily challenges are less manageable when a person is already compromised because of sleep deprivation.”

5 gIve Back. a study done at harvard Business school and the university of British columbia found that the majority of

participants felt happier when asked to think about their past in-

stances of generosity. the more generous participants were found by researchers to be happier in their present lives, suggesting that one kind act begets another, leading to a fuller, happier life.

6 Be grateful. “People today treat materialistic things as symbols of happiness,” says Ilan levinson, M.d., a psychia-

trist in englewood. “they have to have them, otherwise they are miserable. greed is often the key trigger for unhappiness. learn to be content with what you already have because gratefulness is definitely linked to happiness.”

7 Be around haPPy PeoPle. a study in the British Medi-cal Journal showed happiness could actually spread from

person to person, so strive to be around happy people. also, help-ing a friend to be happier is a roundabout way of helping yourself.

8 sPend tIMe wIth frIends and faMIly. a study conducted by the Mayo clinic showed that people who typi-

cally spend more time with loved ones were happier and more content than others.

9 savor the lIttle thIngs. with days jam-packed full of responsibility, we often forget that doing little things we

love can make us happier. If you like to cook, make a pizza instead of ordering one; read a book or indulge in something else you enjoy. try to make at least one hour of each day your “happy hour.”

10 fInally, don’t oBsess aBout BeIng haPPy.happiness is a state of mind you can work to consciously

invest in. as abraham lincoln is reported to have said, “you’ll be as happy as you make up your mind to be.”

Is your chIld strugglIng wIth anxIety about the upcomIng school year? here’s how you can help calm those nervesBy SuSan amoruSo Jara

6 ways to ease back-to-school jitters

Backpacks, Buses, Books—and butterflies? The upcoming school year can cause kids to feel a flutter of anxiety. “Back-to-school jitters are quite common,” explains Melissa B. Vaccari, ph.D., a neuropsychologist at the New york university child study center New Jersey campus in Hackensack and mother of three. “Many children experience but-terflies or a few nights of restless sleep

right before the year begins.” The anticipation of new friends,

teachers, academic demands and responsibilities can bring much excitement and even more angst. sleep disturbances, stomachaches, head-aches, clinginess, decreased appetite and irritability can all be signs of back-to-school anxiety. The good news: Most symptoms will dissipate within a week

or two, and a few simple steps can help whittle away those worries:

IDeNTIfy THe TrIggers. Is your child a perfectionist who’s anxious about getting good grades? Has she had trou-ble with school bullies? Is it shyness or separation anxiety? finding out the root of the stress is often the first step. “once you know the triggers, you can help identify ways to cope,” says Dr. Vaccari, who recommends role-playing or script-ing situations with your child.

Take away THe uNexpecTeD.Back-to-school anxiety often stems from fear of the unknown. The solution: Make things as predictable as possible. Take several trips to the school, pointing out landmarks and houses along the route. contact the school and request a copy of your child’s class schedule or arrange a walk-through. and be sure to note the location of the bathroom, as this is a com-mon source of anxiety for children.

Tell a sTory. This is the perfect time to dig up those childhood memories and share the tale of your own back-to-school worries. can’t remember the details? Not only has Kathryn made a di erence in the Holy Angels community, but she has also begun to make a di erence in the world. As the Founder and President of Knitwits, she teaches classmates how to knit squares to be assembled into blankets for AIDS patients in Africa. She’s traveled to Honduras and Beijing, China on mission trips, transcending the language barrier with her kindness. Kathryn does all of this while still nding the time and energy to maintain Principal’s List every quarter and membership in three National Honor Societies.

DiD you know?A symbol of peace for thousands of years, the olive branch owes its lofty position to its fruit—it takes decades to cultivate olives for consumption, and it was said that anyone who took on this task would be rewarded with a long, peaceful life. it was the Assyrians more than 7,000 years ago who first decided to cultivate olive trees, which thrive in the hot climate of their native Mediterranean region. And they indeed thrive: Some trees have been producing fruit for more than 1,000 years.

PowerSolives owe much of their nutritional power to the unique antioxidant oleuropein, the same phytonutrient that gives them their distinct bitter flavor when they’re just picked but not yet cured. Found exclusively in olives, it provides a host of health benefits, promoting lower cholesterol and protecting cells from damaging free radicals. The fruit also contains the phytonutrient hydroxytyrosol, which has long been known to help prevent cancer and has recently been shown to help stave off bone loss too. what’s more, olives are rich in oleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid that protects against cardiovascular disease.

Buy · STore · GrowThe difference between green and black olives? Green olives are picked unripe, while black ones are harvested ripe.

either way, most olives are too bitter to eat straight off the vine and thus undergo brining. in the store, look for olives still covered in brine to ensure freshness, and store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

while olive trees don’t grow in new Jersey’s climate (most u.S. olives are grown in California), you can find fresh olives and cure them on your own. Simply score the skin, then cover them with a brine of 1 part salt to 10 parts water; shake daily and replace the brine once a week. Start tasting for doneness after three weeks, though it can take up to six to achieve optimal flavor.

one way to enjoy olives is in tapenade: Combine 1 cup pitted, chopped olives with 2 tablespoons olive oil; season with garlic and lemon juice to taste. —AMAnDA ProST

A s the inevitable end of summer slowlyapproaches and the evenings grow cooler, it’s the per fect time for alfresco dining in the garden. There’s nothing more special or memorable than hosting an outdoor dinner party of your own. That is why we asked one of New Jersey’s most notable caterers, Laurence Craig, to design a menu using

the season’s freshest bounty, straight from the garden—his garden, in fact. The spectacular fare and Craig’s distinctive, one-of-a-kind handcraf ted tablescapes set the scene for an unforgettable evening. He and his partner, Dan Ruhland, hosted this soiree for fr iends at their 10-acre Califon farm, and their distinctive, tailored approach gives you all

the inspiration and recipes you need to create your own garden party. Ruhland, an interior designer by trade (and a farmer by day, loving every minute of it), has transformed their 19th-century farmhouse, which was recently featured in House Beautiful, into a sophisticated, eclectic mix of old and new. The newest addi-tions to the home (shown here for the first time in Bergen Health & Life) are the pergola and the brick patio entertaining area where the party was set.

WINE + SPIRITS

A garden party wouldn’t be complete without a refreshing drink. But don’t expect the typical chilled glass of wine or beer from the likes of caterer Laurence Craig. His farm-to-table dinner menu (see page 77)—complete with libations—was inspired by his garden’s seasonal bounty, featuring an abundance of chamomile. In this version of a rum runner, he also included avocado, which adds color and makes the drink creamy (using healthy fat). —JENNIFER VREELAND

CROWD PLEASERTHIS TASTY CONCOCTION IS PERFECT AS A COMPLEMENT TO ANY DINNER PARTY—OR ON ITS OWN AS AN APERITIF

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP RIGHT: Ingredients for Craig’s rum runner include fresh chamomile from his garden and the dried ver-sion from which he brewed the tea. You can buy dried chamomile from a health food store or use store- bought tea bags. MIDDLE: Fran, the beloved (resin) pig, serves up the refreshments. This recipe easily serves six, so you can spend your time mingling, not mixing drinks. BOTTOM: Guests toast the evening.

Midland Family Dental Care is one of the premier dental practices in

Northern New Jersey with four, highly trained specialists with varied areas of expertise. Founded in 1995 in Garfield by Fred Puccio DDS, his practice uses state of the art digital and computer aided technology so most procedures such as crowns, root canals, and dental implants can be done in one visit with no impressions or temporaries. Some of these advanced dental technologies include Cerec (CADCAM), 3D Cone Beam (CATSCAN), Biolase (LASER), and digital x-rays. “Patients don’t have the time for multiple visits and don’t want to go to a dentists they don’t know,” says Dr. Puccio at Midland Family Dental Care, “our patients can relax in our modern, comfortable and clean environment and receive superior dental treatment in one visit in one convenient location.” Dr. Puccio was named one of “America’s Top Dentists,” by the Consumer’s Research Council of America. He was named “teaching attending of the year” at Hackensack University Medical Center in 1999 as well. He is also one of the few dentists in the country to be certified as an Advanced Trainer of Cerec Dentistry. Cerec Dental technology combines in one system a method to restore damaged teeth using high-quality ceramic material in the form of a crown, filling, or veneer.

display not just the price per package but also prices per unit volume, so that kids can compare. Share the prices of grocer-ies and clothes you buy. “This will give young ones an appreciation of just how far a dollar stretches,” says Glickman. Once they reach middle school, start a dinner-hour talk about the country’s economy. High school students can take classes that include lessons on investments, or play interactive computer games that allow them to track the stock market and create mock portfolios without facing any real financial risk, says Glickman.

3Give a reGular allowance. These days, many parents just give

their kids money whenever they need it. But if it’s doled out regularly, an old-fashioned allowance can be a great educational tool. “Adults should provide an allowance on a consistent schedule, instead of as a reward for tasks per-formed,” advises Neiser. This way, kids get practice in planning consistent saving and spending. There’s no strict formula to follow when determining how much allowance to give, but one simple system is to sync amount with age, so for exam-ple, a 10-year-old might receive $10 per week. To help young ones learn about limits, avoid allowance advances and loans. “Children should understand the difference between needs and wants,” says Neiser. “Sit down as a family to calculate how much they’d need to save

Parents have the mostinfluence over how children learn to man-age money, more than educators or even peers, says the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE), a nonprofit organization that helps people make sound monetary decisions through every stage of life. So teach your children what they need to know about handling money:

1start early. “Even kids as young as 3 to 5 can understand that you

need money to buy things, or that you may have to wait to buy something you want,” says Brent Neiser, senior direc-tor at NEFE. With preschoolers, practice counting shiny coins and colorful dollar bills. Give them a piggy bank or wallet in which to collect their own treasure. “As with building a house, you want to begin by laying a solid fiscal foundation,” explains Rachel Glickman, financial representative at Northwestern Mutual in Paramus. “It’s never too early to initiate a dialogue about money management, as long as you make the lessons age-appropriate.”

2KeeP it real. Your talks need not be lofty or abstract. “Every day

teachable moments provide real oppor-tunities to show kids how finances work,” says Neiser. Use the supermarket or mall as a classroom, and empower young shoppers by letting them hand the clerk money at checkout, suggests Glickman. Point out that grocery-store labels now

children who learn wise savinG and sPendinG habits today become the thrift y adults of tomorrow

to afford items they crave, while staying within their own budgets.”

4emPhasize savinG. “Reinforce the habit of saving before spending,”

advises Glickman. Encourage kids to set aside at least 20 percent of their allow-ance, which can be put in a youth savings account or a monitored joint savings account. “If you have access to your child’s account, you can recognize poor spend-ing decisions and provide counsel on how to make better choices,” explains Neiser. Though interest rates are low, making regular deposits will acquaint your young-ster with the satisfaction of watching the total grow. Once good saving habits have been formed, open a checking account in your teenager’s name. Discuss how debit cards work, the fees associated with usage and potential problems that may arise when purchases aren’t tracked.

5factor in fun. Prudence is the goal here, not miserliness. So let kids

buy a toy or something else they want once they’ve saved the required funds. For small purchases, a weekly shopping spree may be appropriate. “This helps remove some of the impulse emotion from their purchasing,” says Glickman. And if you create a family “fun fund” for special weekly or monthly outings, you’re modeling good financial behavior while demonstrating that saving money can be enjoyable. —Francesca Moisin

Millions of faMilies striving to Meet

the Mounting costs of college have

flocked to 529 college savings plans.

For most investors, the plans’ main attractions are the potential for federal tax-deferred earnings growth and federal tax-free qualified withdrawals.1 The plans’ aggregate asset limits, which often exceed $200,000, also appeal to contributors concerned about the potential for a six-figure price tag on a four-year degree. But a closer look at the rules governing 529 plans may reveal other attractive reasons to consider putting them to work as you make one of your most important investments—in your child’s or grandchild’s future.

1 Avoid federAl gift tAxes And AccelerAte giving

You can contribute up to $13,000 (or $26,000 if you and your spouse give and file jointly) to a 529 plan each year without owing federal gift taxes, provided you haven’t made other financial gifts to the plan beneficiary in the same year. In addition, you can elect to make a lump-sum contribution of up to $65,000 ($130,000 for married couples filing jointly) in the first year of a five-year period, provided you don’t give the beneficiary additional taxable gifts during the five-year period.2

2 creAte An educAtionAl funding legAcy

A 529 plan offers the owner control over the plan, including flexibility in naming and changing its beneficiary. The beneficiary can be any age and generally can be changed to a qualified relative when needed. For example, if the original beneficiary decides not to attend college, you can designate a new beneficiary. This flexibility may enable you to establish a college funding legacy for current and future

generations. For example, you could open a 529 plan account to pay your child’s college bills. Then, if there’s money left over after he or she finishes college, you can change the beneficiary to another qualified family member and perhaps later to a grandchild.

3 consolidAte AssetsConsolidating college funding assets for one

beneficiary in a single 529 plan can make them easier to manage. Depending on plan rules, you may be able to arrange transfers from a Coverdell Education Savings Account, a custodial account or another 529 plan without triggering federal income taxes. Be sure to review the tax implications with a tax professional, however. Transfers of assets from Series EE and I bonds may also be allowed under certain conditions.

4 MAxiMize finAnciAl Aid eligibility

Money in a 529 account is usually considered by colleges to be the account owner’s asset, which often means the parents’ asset. As a result, a maximum of 5.6% of the balance is generally assumed to be available for college annually, compared with 35% if the assets were the student’s. With a custodial account, on the other hand, the assets are considered the student’s. And according to the Department of Education, qualified distributions from a 529 plan are not counted as parent or student income and therefore do not affect aid eligibility.

5 look into stAte tAx sAvings

Depending on the state you reside in, plan contributions to that state’s 529 plan may be eligible for state tax deductions. Don’t overlook this potential benefit when choosing a plan. There may be other advantages of 529 plans to consider, as well. Be sure to talk with your financial advisor and tax professional for help assessing how a 529 plan may affect your tax situation.

1The earnings portion of nonqualified withdrawals is subject to federal income taxes, a 10% federal tax penalty and possible state taxes and penalties.2If you die before the end of the five-year period, a prorated portion of the contribution will be considered part of your taxable estate.Section 529 plans are established and maintained by state governments or agencies or eligible educational institutions. Contributions must be kept in a qualified trust in order to be treated as a qualified tuition program. You should consider a 529 Plan’s fees and expenses such as administrative fees, enrollment fees, annual maintenance fees, sales charges, and underlying fund expenses, which will fluctuate depending on the 529 Plan invested in the investments chosen within the plan.© 2010 STAnDArD & Poor’S FInAnCIAl CoMMunICATIonS. “concepts” from award-winning chefs and restaurateurs who own their spaces, and are thus literally invested in the resort’s success. Revel has brought the works of Iron Chefs, Michelin chefs and James Beard Award winners from New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., in hopes that their cool city fan bases will fol-low. American Cut is a modern spin on a steak house by “Iron Chef” Marc Forgione; Azure, brainchild of chef Alain Allegretti, is all about seafood, specifically Mediter-ranean coastal cuisine. And don’t miss Amada, the Andalusian tapas restaurant by “Iron Chef” Jose Garces, modeled on his Philadelphia restaurant of the same name. Not only is it out-of-this-world delicious, it’s also an adventure in tastes as you share a variety of inventive small plates with your companions.

Even if you’re think you’re not an A.C. person, Revel is worth the trip—and fall is a prime time to go. The glitches of the opening weeks have been largely ironed out. It’s time for the cool-seekers to come out and play—at whatever level they like. —Lee Lusardi Connor c

ThE JERsEY shoRE’s lATEsT luxEproperty puts its name to work in the tagline “Revel on a different level,” and you can’t help counting the “levels” it brings to mind.

First, the physical. Dominating the northern end of the boardwalk, Revel makes use of the limitless Atlantic horizon like no other shore resort. Whether you’re in the two-acre outdoor skygarden, filled with indigenous south Jersey flora; or in the indoor/outdoor pool, an alluring oval bisected by a glass wall; or in one of the 1,900 ocean-view rooms, what you see is sea and sky. The honky-tonk of the board-walk below seems far away.

Revel is also at a different level tech-nologically. Instead of brochures, maps or room-service menus, there are computer tablets loaded with info and interactive screens throughout the resort’s main areas. Then there’s the customer service. The employees, stationed at frequent intervals in the resort’s 6.3 million square feet, are uniformly hospitable.

And the level of room and revelry prices? It’s not low. But Revel manage-ment would like you to know that this is

not just a casino with a hotel attached. It’s a full-out resort, a destination, a curated experience. sure, there’s a spacious casino area, but there’s also much more to see and do: ovation theater, inaugurated by Beyoncé at the Memorial Day grand opening. Bask by Exhale, a “well-being” spa with a salt grotto and heated mineral pool. surfing lessons. Yoga on the beach. Kinect for xbox tournaments. high-end shops. Two nightclubs. Multiple pools.

The interior design has an over-the-top quality. The City Way lobby boasts tower-ing walls covered with thousands of red textile roses. There’s a massive sculptural chrome tree at the Flirt bar and gigantic abstract sculptures above the casino area that evoke various species of sea life.

Amid all this awesomeness, Revel wants you to feel comfy. Everywhere there are places to sit—couches, cushy armchairs. As there’s free Wi-Fi throughout, visitors can check e-mail or surf the Web anywhere. And, in another first for A.C. casinos, there’s no smoking anywhere on the premises.

Learn more about Paulette’s story at www.ValleyIVF.com, or call 201-634-5400.

A successful businesswoman, Paulette spent her 20s and 30s working her way to the top of her profession. As she approached 40, she and her husband knew something was missing. They wanted a family. That’s when they turned to the team at The Valley Hospital Fertility Center. They not only gave her the expertise that comes with thousands of implantations and deliveries, they also gave her the personal attention and compassion she needed to feel confident. And most importantly, they helped give her Matthew.

This “fine art” brought to you, in part, by Fertility Specialist Ali Nasseri, M.D., Ph.D.
