The candidates have been displaying their posters around the school. This morning the whole school went to the hall to hear the campaign speeches from half the candidates, and tomorrow we will hear the remainder. Later tomorrow morning the staff and students from Years 1 to 6 will vote. Good luck to all candidates! Results will be revealed at the Presentation Day assembly on Tuesday 13 th December. LEADERSHIP Although a number of Year 5 students are campaigning to becoming next year’s official leaders, it is important to acknowledge those who aren’t. Many of our students display the skills required to be a good leader. They may be good communicators, well organised, be respectful and responsible. They may be confident yet show humility, or show persistence to follow tasks through. There are many leaders amongst our students from Kinder to Year 6 who show us their talents and skills on a daily basis through their initiative, courtesy and impeccable behaviour. These students may not necessarily wear a badge for others to recognise their leadership qualities. STAFFING Tomorrow we say farewell to Ian Derricott, one of our three hardworking cleaners. Most people haven’t crossed paths with Ian, because he finishes his 4-hour shift at 8am! Ian has worked at the school for the last three years and goes beyond what he has to do to keep the school looking good. Ian is hoping to slow down a bit in the seaside town of Woolgoolga. On behalf of the school community I wish him all the best in his retirement up the coast. READING RECOVERY Beresfield Public School is fortunate to have Reading Recovery as one of its ongoing programs. Belinda Ward works with students one-on-one in accordance with the strict and precise guidelines that the program requires. Year 1 students are selected and given a 30 minute lesson each school day to increase their reading ability. This invaluable resource has helped many students to secure a sound foundation in reading. Belinda has been our Reading Recovery teacher for the past 3 years, and will transfer her highly accomplished literacy skills into a new role next year within our school. Thank you to Belinda who has proven to be a very professional and successful Reading Recovery teacher. TECHNOLOGY We are currently auditing the computer network throughout the school. TIPS FOR TACKLING HEAD LICE

Use hair conditioner and a fine head lice comb.

Apply conditioner to the hair and comb through with a wide-toothed comb to remove the tangles.

Then use a fine metal lice comb to remove the lice and pull the nits off the hair.

The conditioner helps slow down the louse and makes it easier to comb out.

For more information go to the “Nitbusters” website www.health.nsw.gov.au/headlice/

EQUIP (Engaged Quality Independent Play)

During 2011, some students from Years 5 and 6 have been participating in a leadership program. These students have given up some of their lunch time to initiate activities for their younger peers. They have matured and shown a lot of commitment to the program and their roles.

As a part of the program the students have learnt to be responsible and active members within a working team. Some of the activities they implement include: Dance, Scoops, Egg & Spoon Races, Board Games, Handball, Skipping and Juggling.

The students have shown a lot of enjoyment from participating in this program and as a result have made new friendships.

YEAR 6 SHIRTS

You may have noticed Year 6 wearing their new shirts on Mondays and Fridays. We thank Darren Tay-lor of DMJC Pty Ltd for his donation, and organisation of other donations, so that this year the children were very fortunate not to have to pay for their commemorative shirts. They look very smart and will be an ongoing reminder of their time at Beresfield Public School.
