Anglo- Saxon History

• The Anglo-Saxons (The Angles, Saxons, and Jutes) began to invade Britain while the Romans were still in power and succeeded in the 5th century (450AD)

• As a result, the best-known hero in the land emerged (Beowulf).

• Although Beowulf, the character, was fictitious, the story made quite a splash in England!

• For over 200 years, Beowulf was told over and over again, passed down through the oral tradition (word of mouth).

Beowulf Is The First Written Text…EVER!

Religion

• The Anglo Saxons were primarily Pagans who believed in many different gods.

• In 597 Pope Gregory sent St. Augustine as missionary to King Ethelbert of Kent to teach Christianity

Evolution of the Story

• Since the only people who could read or write during the Dark Ages were priests, and since Beowulf has some Christian elements in it, we assume that the person who wrote the story down was a monk.

• The Anglo-Saxons controlled this region of Britain until The Norman Conquest occurred in 1066 when William the Conqueror invaded England.

• After this invasion, Christianity became the primary religion of the region.
