BLO – Bentwater Ladies Organization

FALL ZANIA!

BLO scheduled to enter Chili-Cook Off November 5th

Ah, October and we are anticipating coolness in the air. We recently enjoyed the BLO Welcome Back Luncheon where we were entertained by classic jazz with Pat Austin. The singing and danc-ing to the popular tunes of yesteryear were great! We also welcomed back many of our past presidents, and honored BLO members with the most seniority in the organization.

In October we will have the opportunity to hear our own Keith Ann Gearn nar-rate a story of the Legendary Ladies of Texas. The luncheon is scheduled for Monday, October 10th. You can sign up for the luncheon on the Bentwater Club website or by calling the Bentwater office at 936-597-6219.

On October 25-26, a group of our ladies will head to the Coushatta Casino & Golf Resort for our annual golf and gambling trip. It is a fun trip as we play bingo on the bus both going and coming. There is a golf game for the golfers and the rest of us will spend our time pulling those arms in the casino. It is an over-night trip. We leave at 8 am Tuesday and return at 4 pm on Wednesday. Contact Debby Capps at 936-597-5134.

Looking ahead to November, mark your calendars for the Seventh Annual Bric-A-Brac Bazaar on Saturday, November 5th from 10 am to 4 pm, at Bentwater. This popular event showcases artisans and craftsmen with unique items that are perfect for those “hard to shop for” friends and family members. This year there will be live entertainment, food and door prizes.

Later in the day on November 5th will be the Third Annual Bentwater Chili for Charities Cook-Off. HOT CHICKS, the BLO team, will once again be vying for that “Best Chili” designation.

If you still feel the need to shop, just hop on the bus to Reliant Center on Novem-ber 10th with other BLO shoppers who will hit the floor running to make sure they visit all 323 of the national and international merchants at the Nutcrack-er Market. There is clothing, food, home décor, gardening and sporting gifts for the entire family. The bus will leave the yacht club at 8 am. You will be provided a breakfast snack, juice and water on the way and a snack, water and wine for the return trip. Reservations for this trip were taken at the September BLO meet-ing, but if you are lucky, there might be a few seats left. Contact Linda Reed or Vicky Duoto for more information.

Finally, we would like to announce the homes for the Annual Holiday Home Tour, our biggest fundraiser for the year. Seven Bentwater homeowners open their homes to the public for two nights, December 7-8. This year’s homes offer a

cross section of styles and locations. For offering their homes this year, we would like to thank:

Laurie and Sam BurtchWanda and Michael MorganJulie and Roger RodriguezLynn and Greg HullingerMarlene and Len KeelingSandy and Gary Eiland Dee and Bill Soderman

The money from ticket sales goes to the charity of choice for each homeowner. Last year each homeowner received about $1200 for their charity and we hope to give them more this year. Tickets will be on sale for $15 at the country club on November 1st and at the November BLO luncheon. If purchased at the door, tickets are $20.

As you can see, fall is a fun time in Bent-water and the Bentwater Ladies know how to have a good time. Why not join us at our next meeting?

Chef Byron Chargois, aka Chef B

Thai Chili Shrimp Salad Something good is cooking in the kitchen!

Chefs are a breed apart, and Bentwater Yacht & Country Club’s new Chef, Byron Char-gois, is no exception. Even his last name, pronounced “Shag-War”, is interesting. He’s called Chef B by his friends, and he’d like to hear you call him by this nickname soon!

Chef B came by his cooking prowess honestly – he followed in his father’s footsteps to the food and beverage industry, and his mother like many southern women, prepared meals for the family on a daily basis. Byron has two sons, the oldest is twenty and a Marine and the youngest is ten.

Chef ’s career began at 13 as an apprentice chef at the Inns of Court in downtown Houston, where his father was general manager. His father helped prepare Chef B for his career, and for the next five years, Chef Byron worked under the various chefs at his fathers’ restaurant. During his first year in college, he accepted his first job as an execu-tive chef with a local catering company. His career has spanned from the very impor-tant position of executive chef at some of the finest hospitals in this part of the United States to being chosen to be an Executive Chef for the Olympic games in both Atlanta and Beijing. Chef Byron worked at various country clubs and wineries, and although he professes a palette that knows a good wine, he has no real preference for a favorite.

Throughout his career, Chef Byron takes time out of his busy schedule to do charity cook-offs. He cooks competitively two to three times a year, and is planning a charity- cooking event in the near future here at Bentwater. Chef earned the 2008 Rio Grand Valley Iron Chef Food Fight Champion title. Earlier this year his food was the feature at the “Black Tie Bash,” a benefit gala for the children in the Lower Valley region of Texas.

Our chef does not cook at home for himself, and he does not often reveal his recipes. However, he was persuaded to share with our readers this simple-to-prepare, very few ingredient version of his Thai Chili Shrimp Salad. Please enjoy, and the next time you are at the club, give him a warm welcome to Bentwater.

CHICAGO at Houston’s Verizon TheatreExcerpts from a review published in Houston Music Review by Bentwater Resident Dave Clements

Does anyone really know what time it is?

Not sure I really do, but I do know that the band who asked the question in song, formerly known as the Chicago Transit Authority, now just Chicago, played recently at the Verizon Theatre in Houston.

Although I may not know what time it is, here are some things I do know….

Chicago put on a terrific show, going through their long musi-cal career playing hit after hit all night long. They played all my favorites and closed on… you guessed it… 25 or 6 to 4!! I also know that Robert Lamm, one of the four original mem-bers, told the audience early on that they had a nice long show designed for us. By the end of the evening, over two hours later, I can confirm that he was not kidding AND it went by briskly!

After using the first three songs of their set to take photographs of Chicago’s performance, see accompanying photos, I closed my camera bag, sat in the back of the theatre, kicked up my feet and enjoyed the show.

After every song I thought of all the many people not in atten-dance who would have shared the joy of what I was experienc-ing. The band was so fired up and gave their all to an apprecia-tive crowd. There were nine musicians on stage and as I contin-ued to watch I noticed that each performer was putting it all out there as if they were the only one. I like that type of team effort as it caused me to stay very focused on the stage and take in all the music and all the musicians.

The horn section blew me away… get it? These guys are world class musicians, all founding members of the group, who can create beautiful sounds…and they did, ALL NIGHT LONG. The trombonist, James Pankow never stopped moving. He was always trying to catch the eye of someone in the audience (almost pointing at them, one at a time, saying, look and listen to me). Fun stuff!

Besides the music being fantastic the light show was also amaz-ing. Being a photographer (vs. writer) I pay a lot of attention to stage lighting and theirs was second to none! I saw this group back in the 70’s and thought they were really good then. They were awesome. I am so glad to have experi-enced it, and I hope you can tell I thoroughly enjoyed them. They have just gotten better with age. Just think how good they might have been if they’d been named Houston!

So for all you Houston Chicago fans who just didn’t want to brave the elements on a Sunday night, who were recovering from a late Saturday night and maybe one too many drinks, thinking about having to go to work early the next morning and fight the traffic… wishing you were here!

It'sMosquitoSeason!

Special guests, Chip and Lynn Keener, Roy and Anna Van de Huevel, Jim and Lesley Spencer, Alex and Marsha Krezel, Joe and Sue Ashy, Richard and Marjorie Sikes and Elsie Landry, each brought a delicious hors d`oeuvre that was served with California wines furnished by the sponsors represented by Bentwater Country Club’s General Manager Richard Aiple, Steve Seay, Bentwater Sales Corporation Chad Mahlmann and Bentwater POA ‘s General Manager Dawn Cleboski. General Manager’sMessageby Dawn Cleboski

The picturesque beauty of Bentwater is attributed in part to responsible homeown-ers, like yourselves, who fulfill their roles in caring for their part in the Bentwater mas-terpiece. Each part and role is significant to the whole, and if left unkempt, forgotten, or incomplete, it bears a burden to others and a negative reflection on all. You will want to create a plan to ensure your area of respon-sibility is consistent with the beauty and the deed restrictions of Bentwater.

Trash/Recycling Containers:As removal of trash, debris and recycled materials from your residence promotes beauty, the timely return of these contain-ers to a location away from your neigh-bor’s and public view further contributes to your responsibility to the whole.

In the event you are unable to return your container in a timely fashion to a location away from your neighbor’s and public view, you may wish to designate

this beautification role to others who can assist you.

As your community manager, we would be remiss in our responsibility if we did not remind you that escalating fines may be levied if you do not timely return these containers to a location away from your neighbor’s and public view.

Unmarked Vehicles:All vehicles must display a Bentwater decal on the windshield or vehicle pass on the dashboard while inside our gated community. Please remind your guests of this policy.

Please contact us immediately at 936-597-5532 (24/7) in the event you notice an unmarked vehicle in our community.

Street Parking:Keeping the streets clear and open, day and night, assists not only in maintain-

ing the beauty of our community, but in safety and health of all who drive, walk or reside in Bentwater.

Only guests should be park in the street, and only when all of your garage and driveway spaces are full.

Deed Restriction Enforcement:You may be contacted by the POA for your assistance in fulfilling your responsibilities pursuant to the deed restrictions. Please note that others in the community receive notifications as well. Each situation is dif-ferent. Our goal is to provide you with friendly, courteous and helpful service.

We are here to support you in your role of keeping Bentwater a masterpiece by com-municating issues to you of which you may not currently be aware.

We are in this together to create the best of Bentwater life. This is the Life!

Best Regards,Dawn

The annual Bentwater Golf Trip, hosted by Mark Massen-gale, was held in early August at Sunriver Resort. Sunriver is just outside of Bend, Oregon with wonderful views of Mount Bachelor. The resort was a fantastic destination for outstand-ing golf, relaxation, good food, and best of all, cool weather. The 19 members played three days of golf at The Woodlands, Crosswater, and Meadows courses. One day was left open for sightseeing. Sight-seeing included activities such as white water rafting, visiting Crater Lake, riding the ski lift to the top of Mount Bachelor to play in the snow, shopping and play-ing more golf. The trip ended with a group dinner on the last night. Roger & Karen Koerner photographed the entire trip and put together an amazing slide show for all to view at the dinner. Mark passed out money from the day’s skins game and found out whose handicap might need to be adjusted. (He is keeping those names to himself.) The group consisted of Roger & Karen Koerner, Dan & Johnese Turner, Philip & Barbara Sain, Stephen & Kathy Koch, Jim & Buddie Bertrand, Jim & Connie Landgraf, Scott & Karen Walker, Alex Krezel, Pat Wagner, Steve Krauszer, and Ron & Karen Monshaugen. Mark is researching another great destination for next year. Hope you can join him on the 2012 trip!

Montgomery County Food Bank

Bentwater POA makes it easy to donate!

For years, Bentwater POA has displayed Montgomery County Food Bank barrels in the POA office to make it easy for you to donate food for those in hunger and we have made weekly trips to deliver the food to the food bank. Join us in thanking Bent-water Resident and United Way Member, Fred Ziker, who has volunteered to regularly deliver the donated items to the food bank, not only doing a good deed, but saving the POA time and money.

WE INvITE YOU TO REGULARLY DROP OFF YOUR FOOD DONA-TIONS AT THE POA OFFICE AS YOU TRAvEL TO AND FROM THE GROCERY STORE.

Everyone is asked to take action to continually fight hunger in our extended community. Whether it’s by advocating and raising awareness, making donations, or volunteering, individu-als can find the way that works for them to make a difference. There could not be a more important time to commit to doing everything we can to fight against hunger as many Texans are still struggling in this recovering economy. One in four children in Texas are food insecure and do not know where their next meal may be coming from or when it will be. The Montgomery

County Food Bank distributes to 50 agency pantries throughout Montgomery County to fill 30,000 requests for food monthly. Forty percent of the requests are children and 10% are elderly on fixed incomes.

The Montgomery County Food Bank survives on monetary and food donations, grants, and volunteers. It takes approximately 1,000 volunteer hours a month to sort, box, and weigh the food for delivery. To learn how you can support the Montgomery County Food Bank and fight hunger in Montgomery County, call 936.539.6686 or visit the website www.montgomerycountyfoodbank.com or on Facebook at facebook.com/Montgomery-County-Food-Bank.

Grassroots ClubTexas Republican Party Chairman Steve Ministeri reminded us that we can join the Grassroots Club by contributing $8.25 a month. If so, fund raising phone calls from the Republican party to you will end. It will also end the direct mail solicitations from the state party. This is a great way to support your Republican Party, reduce their costs of fun-draising, and lower your frustration level. You can sign up to become a Grassroots Club member by going to www.GrassrootsClub.com.

LC A – L A K E CO N R O E A S S O C I AT I O NPRESIDENT ’S UPDATE

Mike Bleier, Bentwater Property Owner and President of Lake Conroe Association

August 18, 2011TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY LAKE LEVEL SURVEY:

The Lake Conroe Association (LCA) has been working with Texas A&M University and Montgomery County to assess the impact of projected lake level fluctuations resulting from the San Jacinto River Authority’s (SJRA) Groundwater Reduction Plan. Thanks to the generosity of LCA Members, the LCA was able to contribute $62,000 towards this $142,000 project. Lake Conroe is certainly a treasured amenity for residents of Mont-gomery County, and reduced lake levels clearly impact use of the lake, local business success and residential property values.

Aside from evaluating engineering studies commissioned by SJRA to estimate the effects of removing water from Lake Con-roe, an important element of the Texas A&M Study is a survey of local residents. Texas A&M mailed invitations to participate in the Lake Conroe Survey in late July to a one-in-ten random sample of residents within four miles of the lake. It was very important to respond so that A&M’s findings can incorporate our perspectives into estimates of the potential impact of the proposed SJRA Groundwater Reduction Plan. These findings will help our leaders make choices that are sensitive to our per-spectives and concerns as they address the serious water issues in our county.

Usually, the LCA asks you to make a donation and WE do the work. This time, we aren’t asking for money but, rather, we encouraged you to the survey requesting your opinions. We need your help to help you.

WATER MEETING CALLED BY JUDGE SADLER:I was recently asked to attend a water meeting by Montgomery County Judge Sadler. Attendees included representatives from The City of Houston, Lone Star Groundwater Conservation District, SJRA, Region H Water Planning Committee, Mont-gomery County, The City of Conroe, Lake Conroe Communi-ties Network (LCCN) and various interested parties. I thought

you would appreciate an update of what I interpreted was pre-sented in that meeting:

1) Current lake level on Lake Conroe is 196.92 (normal pool is 201.0). The lowest Lake Conroe has ever reached is a level of 196.

2) The City of Houston started removing water from Lake Con-roe on Tuesday, August 16, 2011. The estimated rate of remov-al equates to approximately one-half inch per day, or fifteen inches per month. Without significant rainfall to modify their plans, The City of Houston expects to remove a total of three feet of water by the end of 2011. As two-thirds owner of Lake Conroe’s water supply, the City of Houston will pay nothing to SJRA for this water.

3) The City of Houston’s contract with SJRA for water removal is based on a calendar year. They can remove two-thirds of 100,000 acre feet of water (or approximately 3 feet of water) in any calendar year. Therefore, if significant rainfall does not modify their plans, the City of Houston COULD start withdraw-ing water from Lake Conroe under its 2012 allotment starting January 1, 2012. At one-half inch per day, The City of Houston COULD remove another three feet of water from Lake Conroe by the end of March, 2012. Since water use reduces during the winter season, it would be more likely that the City of Houston would remove the three feet of water by mid-2012 and not the end of March, 2012.

4) Summer evaporation rates approximate one-third to one-half

inch per day, and total approximately four feet per year.

5) While weather forecasters are certainly not always accurate, climatologists do not foresee significant rain for our area for the balance of 2011. Further, with an estimated 50% accuracy,

climatologists predict a 2012 drought similar to that we are experiencing in 2011.

6) In big round numbers, our lake level could reach a level of 190 (or eleven feet below normal pool) by the end of 2011. The math used would be: current pool of 197… less 3 feet of water removed by The City of Houston… less 2 feet of water evapo-ratedinthesecondhalfofsummer/fall…less1½feetofwaterwhich could be sold by SJRA (their one-third of 100,000 acre feet)…less½footofwatertoaccountforthesurfaceofLakeConroe reducing as the water level drops (similar to a bowl…more surface at the top of the bowl and reducing surface as you approach the bottom of the bowl).

7) Looking for the most time-effective solution to our water shortage, the individuals attending Judge Sadler’s meeting strongly encouraged immediately drilling further test wells into the Catahoula Aquifer. Determining the quality and sus-tainability of this aquifer is of utmost importance in evaluating our water options.

8) Judge Sadler also encouraged the Region H Water Planning Committee to move forward with evaluating the feasibility of building another reservoir in Montgomery County to supple-ment the waters of Lake Conroe. Previous requests of this nature

in 2010 were denied by Region H. With Region H entering a new five-year planning cycle beginning in 2012, Judge Sadler pointed out that ignoring this request for another five years would be unacceptable given water shortages across our area.

9) Judge Sadler further requested that Region H provide a thorough financial review comparing the costs of all water options available to our County including a new reservoir, buy-ing water from the Trinity River Authority and a host of other potential options.

10) While only briefly discussed due to time constraints (prior-ity topics were the City of Houston’s water withdrawal, pro-jected lake levels, use of the Catahoula Aquifer, and Region H’s review of a new reservoir), other water topics of interest included conservation, water restrictions, use of treated efflu-ent for golf course and residential irrigation, and mandatory use of treated effluent incorporated into the development of new communities for irrigation and water features.

Note to the Reader: Bentwater is represented on the board of directors of Lake Conroe Association by Bentwater Property Owner and Presi-dent, Mike Bleir, as well as Bentwater Residents Tom Butz and Gene Colbert and Bentwater POA General Manager Dawn Cleboski.

Ladies Golf Association (LGA)

GOLF in the Fall at BENTWATER

Nine hole winners at the D-Member Select Tournament. Front Row: Nancy Sappenfield, Sharon Jones, Anne Howard, Carol Hanson, Shirley Quinlan, Sandy Wagner Back row: Dell Schooler, Jeanie Rogerson, Eileen Holbert, Janita Love, Patty Mennes, Dottie Hlopak.

LGA members persevered through the heat and are welcom-ing nicer weather this fall. Recently, we participated in several important tournaments. One was the annual Bentwater Cup, which pits the ladies that live on the Weiskopf course against the Miller members. At press time, the winners were unknown. We will let you know next month whether the Weiskopf team led by Lavera Meadors and Darlene Bumstead or the Miller team led by Barbara Sorsdal and Pat Primavera reign as cham-pions. A rally on Friday, September 30th, kicked off the Satur-day October 1st event.

The LGA 9-Holer Championship and the LGA Club cham-pionship were played in September. Look for the winners’ pic-tures in the November issue. These two tournaments are for all the marbles and bragging rights for next year. Congratulations to the winners!

This month there will be three regular play days as well as a bus trip to Coushatta with the Bentwater Ladies Organization on October 25-26. LGA members that are also BLO members can attend this fun trip.

In addition to these events, there are two special events for the 9-hole LGA group this month.

After the Tuesday, October 4th play day, we will have a guest speaker. Marlene Summers, our Handicap and Rules Chair-woman, has arranged for Allison Jarrett to speak to the group about rules specific to the Bentwater courses. This will surely be an interesting presentation and give us a chance to learn some insights about the USGA. Ms. Jarrett is the Director of Region-al Affairs - South for the United States Golf Association.

On Wednesday, October 5th, the LGA will host the Pacesetters Interclub Tournament on the Weiskopf course. Ladies from other 9-hole organizations in Conroe and The Woodlands will join the Bentwater ladies for a scramble tournament and a lunch at the Yacht Club.

Scheduled for Tuesday, October 18th, the 9-holers will host their first invitational tournament, the Bewitched Tournament.

The ladies are excited about this special tournament and hope to have lots of involvement from other LGA organizations in the area. This will be a two-lady scramble.

There are four play days in November and we anticipate the weather being nice, so let’s all get out on the course and enjoy the fall days in Bentwater.

The final event for the year is the Jingle Bell Brunch held on Saturday, December 3rd. LGA members will enjoy a nice brunch, cheer for all of the winners and champions and elect our officers for the next year. We want to see all of the LGA members come out for this grand finale of the year. Reserva-tions for the brunch can be made through the Bentwater Club website about mid-November.

Finally, congratulations to Terry Fisher for her Hole-in-On on Miller #4. Way to go Terry!

Why not join us on the course for a great day of golf and visit-ing with friends after the game? See you on the links.

Bentwa-ter residents Pat Dinhoble and Katy and Sonny James provided meals for the entire cast, including the photographers and direc-tor. Katy, a gifted vocalist was requested to sing several numbers from her soon to be released CD. One of the songs was “Des-perado” which she sang in the Bentwater City Limits concert. She thoroughly enjoyed Ann's beautiful baby grand piano. The first half of Katy’s CD is comprised of Jazz and Swing numbers. She is also hoping to have a Christmas CD finished in time for this years’ Bric-a-Brac at which she will be performing.

PARKING Where Is Your Vehicle Parked?Contributed by John Joseph, Bentwater Advisory Board Member

In Bentwater, property owner’s vehicles are supposed to be parked in the garage…two vehicles no problem, both should be parked in the garage, always. But I have a golf cart, too. You can park a golf cart and two vehicles in almost any garage, if you try.

Per the Bentwater Deed Restrictions, garages are for vehicles, not boats/jet skis, trailers, home shops, storage, etc. If you have a two-car garage and three registered vehicles, of course you have to park the third vehicle in your driveway. You may not park a registered vehicle in the street overnight.

PARKING…IT’S REALLY PRETTY SIMPLE.

The POA is playing a pro-active role in helping our employees understand the need for extra care for their health and wellness during extreme hot weather conditions and gave them an opportunity to execute a pledge as a step towards that goal. The pledge included drinking a cer-tain amount of water as a minimum dur-ing the work period, taking five-minute breaks in the shade each hour and staking a flag next to them to indicate that they are on a break. New wick shirts with solar shield safety and hats with built-in insect protection were provided to keep them cooler, comfortable and visible.

Drinking an adequate amount of water during the work period is part of the Heat Protection Pledge.

Russell Zimmerman

Russell Zimmermann was born April 13, 1930 to Elmer & Lucille (Wrenger) Zimmermann in St. Louis, Missouri and passed away on August 11, 2011.

He graduated from Kirkwood High School where he lettered in football and won the Missouri state wrestling championship 2 years in a row. He attended the University of Iowa on a football scholarship. Russell served in the Navy during the Korean War and was then stationed in Kodiak, Alaska. In 1952 he married Delores Muetze and they became parents of a son, David and a daughter, Christy. Delores was deceased in 1982.

Following his Navy service, Russell returned to college and then worked for GMAC and moved to Centralia, Illinois. His next career opportunity was working for the Ed Sullivan Cable TV company and getting it established in Centralia. In 1970 he joined in a partnership with 4 others, building, owning and managing the Regal 8 motel chain and long term health care facilities in the Midwest. Russ was a 32nd degree Mason and while in Centralia was president of the Shrine Club.

Russell and Mary Holt were married in 1983. The companies were sold in 1987 and a new adventure began. Together they turned 80 acres near Bloomington, Illinois into a small horse farm, built a home and Russ had a lot of tools and several trac-tors and always a new "project." In 1989 they traveled on their boat down the Illinois and Mississippi rivers to New Orleans

France, Coast-To-Coast

Warren and Pam Dean in front of the famous Monte Carlo Casino in Monaco

Next stop for the group: the famous Eiffel Tower

The travel group enjoyed a spectacu-lar, coast-to-coast Grand France adventure by river and bus from Mon-te Carlo and Nice on the Mediterra-nean to the English Channel in July. The trip included

five days to enjoy Paris and its surrounding attractions, as well as the Normandy area.

After flying to Nice and spending an overnight in Monte Carlo, the group boarded the Avalon Scenery in Arles for a 7-day cruise on the Rhone and Saone Rivers. Sailing north on the Rhone, the first stop was Avignon, home to the Popes in the 14th century and the famous Avignon Bridge. From there, some of the group traveled to the famed Pont du Gard Roman aqueduct near Nimes while others visited the vineyards and wine cellars of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The itinerary provided a Bill and Adele Goddard in front of the bridge at

Continuing north on the Saone, the next stop was in Macon, an important city in the Burgundy wine region. Then, following a scenic cruise through that region, the ship ported in Chalon-sur-Saone, from which the group traveled by bus to Beaune, visiting the famous Hotel-Dieu, one of France’s architectural highlights from the 15th century -- then on to Paris for a won-derful, 5-day stay there.

In addition to visiting the traditional sights of Paris, the group enjoyed a private guided excursion to Giverny for a tour of the home where French impressionist painter Claude Monet lived most of his life -- and the gardens, which inspired hundreds of his paintings, including the famous Japanese Bridge. The fol-lowing day the group traveled to the Normandy coast, visiting Pointe du Hoc and the D-Day landing beaches there and the American Memorial and Cemetery at Saint-Laurent. On the last day the group traveled to Versailles for a private guided tour of the palace and its manicured lawns and gardens.

Turtles The Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle SituationBy Charles CaillouetConservation Volunteer(http://www.gulfbase.org/person/view.php?uid=ccaillouet)

On 16 August, the Houston Chronicle carried a front-page story of concern about the impending retirement of Dr. André Landry, Professor and head of the Sea Turtle and Fisheries Ecology Research Laboratory at Texas A&M in Galveston. He has joint appointments in Departments of Marine Biology (Galveston) and Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences (College Sta-tion). We are longtime friends and collaborators in sea turtle research. I phoned him and learned he will not retire until 2012. However, he is down-shifting to halftime to focus on guiding four graduate students toward completion of their stud-ies and research before he retires.

Joint efforts by Mexico and the U.S. toward Kemp’s Ridley recov-ery will continue. Kemp’s Ridley, and endangered species, is on an exponential trajectory toward recovery. (see http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/pr/pdfs/recovery/turtle_kempsridley_draft2.pdf and http://www.seaturtle.org/mtn/archives/mtn128/mtn128p1.shtml).

Sometimes we should look at things from all directions!

Moving people out of poverty...one family at a time. That is the number one priority for the Montgomery County United Way. With the 2011 campaign in full swing, Bentwater can show how much we care by helping MCUW fulfill this goal with our pledge contributions and volunteering. Long known for its short term crisis response and ongoing support through highly effective programs, MCUW is also focusing on long-term solu-tions to our community’s problems.

Did you know 25,000 Montgomery County families live on $25,000 a year or less?

That is why MCUW funds “Project Independence,” a pilot pro-gram that combines education and job training with financial literacy. If families have training and education to earn sustain-able wages, they will be better prepared to face any personal and financial crisis.

Did you know Montgomery County has the third highest unin-sured rate in the greater Houston area and that almost 70 per-cent of Montgomery County residents are overweight or obese? That is why the MCUW collaborated with community health partners to create the Montgomery County Health Assessment. This study gives seven recommendations for the community including expanding services in existing clinics and underserved areas, supporting a community patient navigator system that provides help in finding available health resources and establish-ing an Obesity Task Force.

Did you know Montgomery County’s senior population has grown by 21 percent?

It has also seen a 50 percent increase in the number of people with a disability, and confirmed cases of child abuse and neglect has increased by 21 percent. By providing education

and skills to improve life, the MCUW has helped 4,227 indi-viduals make progress on plans to maximize independence despite personal challenges.

Did you know 8.9 percent of the county’s population, 12 years of age or older are dependent on or abuse alcohol and or illicit drugs?

With MCUW investing $42,000 it leveraged almost $174,000 in state and federal funding dollars to expand the initial drug and alcohol treatment program in Montgomery County.

Did you know data from one of the MCUW’s funded partners indicates they are missing over 3,000 calls per day from citizens needing help with rent and utility bills?

Thanks to your donations, MCUW helped over 1,300 people with their short term needs and over 1,200 people were able to move forward with their lives because they were equipped with a plan.

Moving people out of poverty by helping them cope with chal-lenging situations, facilitating access to affordable and quality healthcare, preventing and treating drug and alcohol abuse and providing temporary assistance in the event of a crisis are all ways your donation helps MCUW help the community. Please show how much BENTWATER CARES through your 2011 campaign pledge.

wineauxThe Wineaux groups have been hard at work all year tasting wines. Each group picks winners at their gather-ings and sends the results to our fearless leader Gaye Watkins and her scribes. The results are tallied, and several of the winning wines from the year, both red and white, are selected to be served at the Annual Wineaux Extravaganza to be held in November. The event last year, at Ginger and Dan Knight’s home, was so much fun, the group has decided on a repeat. This year, the wine extravaganza will be at the Knight home the weekend of November 18-19. The exact date and cost per couple has yet to be determined.

Wineaux members volunteer to make food for this event; heavy hors d’oeuvres and desserts that pair nicely with the selected wines. It is an evening all true Wineaux

look forward to each year. If you are interested in joining Wineaux next year, this might be a good way to introduce yourself to the Wineaux of Bentwater. We have both serious groups and more casual wine drinker groups. The difference is that the fine wine drinkers actually know what they are talking about. The rest of us are just along for the nice ride. If you are not yet a Wineaux, contact Gaye Watkins if you would be interested in attending this event. Regular Wineaux should watch their emails for an invita-tion to this event.
