Mom laughed when Isaid I wanted to be awriter: Ruskin Bond
When Ruskin Bond told his mother thathe wanted to be a writer, she laughed, saying with his good handwriting, he
could only be a clerk in a lawyer's office. Thiswas early in 1951, when Bond was waiting forhis school board results. Bond's aim was to writestories and become an author, but no one elseseemed to think it was a good idea. His stepfa-ther wanted him to attend college, his mother
advised him to join the Army, while his schoolheadmaster wished he became a teacher. Thesevery thoughts would terrify Bond. "A teacher! That was the last thing, I wanted to be; I'd hadenough of school rules, homework and earlymorning PT. I had no wish to inflict it on oth-ers. The Army? More rules, more PT, heavyboots, routine marching..." he would think. These are the thoughts shared by the au-thor in his latest book, 'A Song of India:The Year I Went Away'.

Helicopter moneyWHAT:With the coron-
avirus-hit econo-my falling deeperand deeper into achasm with each passing day,Telangana chief minister KCRao has said that helicoptermoney can help states comeout of this morass. He hasurged the Centre to release 5
per cent funds from the GDPof the country through quan-titative easing (QE), a policyfollowed all over the world
WHY:Helicopter money isan unconventional
monetary policy tool aimed atbringing a flagging economyback on track. It involves print-ing large sums of money anddistributing it among the pub-lic. In other words, it means non-repayable money transfer from
the central bank tothe government.
X-PLAINED
American econo-mist Milton
Friedman coined thisterm. It basically denotes ahelicopter dropping moneyfrom the sky. Friedmanused the term to signify"unexpectedly dumping ofmoney into a strugglingeconomy, with the inten-tion to recover it from adeep slump
HOW: It seeks to encour-age people into
spending more, thereby help-ing in boosting the sagging
economy. Money is distributedamong the citizens, private in-stitutions, the State govern-ments, and others.
WHAT IS QUANTITATIVE EASING? Quantitative Easing isa monetary policy in which the central bank buys govern-ment bonds or other financial assets to inject money intothe sagging economy
IS HELICOPTER MONEY THE SAME AS QUANTITATIVEEASING? Quantitative easing involves the use of printedmoney by the central banks to buy government bonds. Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, ifyou step outwearing a valve
mask you bought for pol-lution, you should consid-er changing it. Valvemasks pose serious healthrisks to people aroundyou, warn experts.
Though health expertshave advocated for facemasks to prevent thespread of Covid, masks
with valves only filter in-haled air, they say. So, if you
are a Covid carrier, you willinfect others, if your mask has
a valve,they warn.
SAY NO TO VALVE MASK
SAFETY MANUAL
➥Masks with one-way valves filter the air youinhale, but these do not filter exhaled air➥The valve expels exhaled air in a strong, steady stream, which moves with speed➥ If the wearer is a Covid-19 carrier, thosearound them can be infected
WHAT IS A VALVE? Valves are often a raisedplastic disk, about the size of a coin, in the centreor side of the maskHOW DO VALVE MASKS WORK? Inhaled air is fil-tered through the fabric, and hot, humid exhaledair goes out through the valve. It facilitates easybreathing, but is harmful during Covid-19
WHY YOU SHOULD NOT WEAR AMASK WITH VALVE

EFFICIENT COOLING SEEN AS KEY TOKEEPING CLIMATE CHANGE IN CHECK
A fter enduring the hottest decade on record, Indiaaims to keep its homes and workplaces cool with-out raising energy consumption with one simple
change: raising the temperature settings on air con-ditioners.The government has mandated a default tem-perature of 24 degrees Celsius, instead of the standard 20-21C for units made or sold from the start of this year, andwants commercial buildings to keep air conditioning atthat level. The measure could cut national energy con-sumption by 24% for households and 20% for busi-nesses, according to a UN report that called for a switchto more energy-efficient cooling systems.

ENVIRONMENT
➤ The UN report said that while cooling devices, like airconditioners and refrigerators are crucial to humanhealth and the global economy, emissions from the fos-sil fuels used to power them, could worsen climatechange ➤Doubling the energy efficiency of the coolingequipment can save something like 1,600 medium-sizedpower plants from being built by 2030, the report said, adding that this should be a focus in the post-pan-demic recovery plans ➤ It also said that phasingout climate-warming refrigerant gases, known ashydrofluorocarbons, could help the world avoidup to 0.4C of global warming by 2100
➤Better building design could also help by reducingconsumption, or the need for cooling as well as createjobs, the report said. For example, a clean white roofthat reflects 80% of sunlight would stay about 30degrees C cooler than a grey roof that reflects only 20%of sunlight, and well-designed cities could save 25% ofthe energy used for heating and cooling
G oogle is set to launch its Ap-ple AirDrop-like file sharingfeature for Android users

5 extensions to make online class cool
The sky is overcast, it ispouring outside, yousettle down for a rainyday! What could ossiblygo wrong in this
dreamy weather, you think. Well, alot. For all the romantic notionsassociated with the monsoon sea-
son, it is also the reigning season ofbugs and bacteria. According toAyurveda, monsoon is the timewhen because of humidity or mois-ture in the atmosphere, the air andthe water element in the body tendto get disturbed. The heavinesswhich comes with humidity and lossof fluids with perspiration induceslower energy levels and poor diges-tion, resulting in lethargy, skin andgastric disorders and respiratoryproblems. We get experts to givesome useful advice for a rainy day…
1Humidity is high during mon-soon, causing a lot of sweat-ing, so dehydration levels are
high. Water alone is not enoughsince it doesn’t give the body therequired nutrients and elec-trolytes. So take coconut water, nimbu pani, chaas and lassi.
To keep the magic that comes with rains intact, it is advisable to watchwhat you eat in the monsoon season...
2Joint pains, acidity, flat-ulence are all a result ofaggravated vata (air) and
kapha (water) elements, there-fore diets and daily regimen should consist offoods that are warming anddrying in nature. Try besan(gram flour), black chana, arhar, moong, soups and roast-ed chana. Avoid curds, raw sal-ads, and fermented foods asthey tend to further aggravateacidity, gas and joint pains.
3The fruit of the neem tree whichalso comes in this season acts likean antidote and purifies blood
to help you detox. Amaltas whichis in full bloom in summer alsoyields dark brown pods in thisseason. Soak the pulp of thesepods with the pulp of tamarind(10 gm) each day. Next morn-ing mash and sieve it. This
water taken regularly cleanses the blood, keeps the skin and thedigestive system free of congestion and aids elimination of toxinsfrom blood and digestive tract.
4Drink water flavoured withchamomile, dalchini (cinnamon)or fennel (saunf) to detoxify
your system. If your parents sufferfrom arthritis, you could ask them todrink warm water with a little tulsi
and dalchini first thing in the morning,on an empty stomach. This reduces pain
in the joints, common in this weather.
5Garlic is also helpful in restor-ing balance caused
by aggravated air ele-ment. Home-made garlicbutter is an excellentaddition to breads, casseroles, pastas andmany varieties of foodsin this season. Add moreherbs like basil and parsley to your food.
8Add digestive spiceslike ginger, cinnamonand black pepper to
your tea to counter theaggravation of vata(air). Ginger tea withold honey aids diges-tion and makes up for loss of fluids from the body.
7Use of Indian cow’sorganic ghee, lightoils like olive oil and
sunflower oil and cookedmustard oil are highly rec-ommended in monsoon.
6It is importantto maintain theoptimum tem-
perature of food toavoid spoilage. Milk, veggies and non-vegitems should be storedat their optimum temperatures.
