Hospital has greatly impacted the award-winning facility

You’ll read about Newport Hospital’s laser-like focus

on recruiting new physicians; our successful launch of a new

community lecture series; and the addition of our first Nurse

Navigator for Newport Hospital’s Comprehensive Cancer

Center, made possible by funds raised by generous donors

during last year’s Swinging on a Star gala. These are all

important steps that allow us to serve our community in new

and expanded ways. We also share with you the heartwarming

story of how Newport Hospital’s Emergency Department

saved a soon-to-be new dad’s life and delivered his baby boy,

all in a matter of a few weeks. And as we do each year, we

recognize our 2014 honor roll of donors.

ankNewport and Newport Hospital never lose sight of the

continued loyalty, trust, and support the community has placed in them

since the 1800s. As a community bank and a community provider, both

organizations share a unique and valuable history of significant growth,

changes to infrastructure, and tireless employees who have served

generations of families from Newport and the surrounding communities.

The Savings Bank of Newport, as it was known at the time, opened

its door for business in a private home at 2 Pelham Street in Newport in 1819,

and similarly, Newport Hospital was founded and funded by Newporters

in 1873 on land that was donated for that purpose. Both have been true

partners in meeting the needs of the community for a very long time.

Since becoming Newport Hospital’s first Vision 2001 Capital

Campaign corporate sponsor in March 1998, with a leadership gift of

$100,000, BankNewport’s support of the hospital has been unwavering.

hristina Cerenzia was in her 37th week of pregnancy when

she found herself en route to the Emergency Department (ED)

at Newport Hospital. Terrified, the mom-to-be found herself

thinking, “I can’t go into labor…not now. Please let them

help Justin.”

Justin is Christina’s husband. He is the head coach of

St. George’s hockey team in Middletown, RI and he had been

hit in the head by a flying hockey puck. It was the third period of

the game. The team was short a man on a penalty and Justin was

talking to a player on the bench. Out of nowhere, a puck struck

him just above his right temple. Knocked from the bench, the

team doctor and trainer rushed to his side as Justin lay there,

bleeding profusely and unable to sit up. Justin recalls knowing

he was in bad shape, “I knew I needed help fast and needed

an ambulance.” When the EMTs arrived, Justin told them,

“My wife is nine months pregnant … please get me help fast!”

The ambulance brought Justin to Newport Hospital.

The combination of his bleeding ear canal and location of the

temple injury meant that

Justin was seriously

injured. The head CT

scan confirmed a skull

fracture of the temporal

bone as well as an

epidural hematoma,

which is a brain bleed.

After Physician

Assistant Jerry Ferrera

reviewed the scan results

with the radiologist, Jerry

told attending ED physi-

cian Ben Hodgson, MD,

they had a patient with

a traumatic brain injury

that needed to be trans-

ferred to a trauma center

where neurosurgeons

could release the pressure in his brain

and stop the bleed. Minutes were critical

and Justin was quickly

deteriorating. Dr. Hodgson

prepared him for the critical

care transfer—administering

medication to reduce the pain

and brain swelling as well as

preventatively intubating

him to protect his airway.

“I just sat there watching his heart rate

drop thinking I can’t go into labor, I just want

my husband to be okay,” remembers Christina,

“but I didn’t understand just how severe the

situation was until they told me they might have

to drill a hole in his head to relieve the pressure

on his brain and that I should call his parents

in Pennsylvania.”

For Justin, quick thinking and fast action on the part of

emergency staff at Newport Hospital was critical in saving his life.

“If his initial arrival

at the hospital, his scan, the

reading of the results, or his

transfer had been delayed,

significant brain damage, or

death, could have occurred,”

explains Jerry. Dr. Hodgson

adding, “From the nurses

to the pharmacy staff

who were instrumental

in getting us the medica-

tions we needed at lightning

speed, this was an excellent

example of team work.”

Justin’s post-operative

recovery impressed neuro-

surgeons and he was released

from Rhode Island Hospital

three days after they

performed a craniotomy to reduce the pressure

and repair the ruptured artery in his skull.

A Position Made Possible

Thanks to our Generous Donor Community

n January 2015, thanks to the generous support of blitz and auction donors at the 2014 Newport Hospital Swinging on a Star gala, the Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) at Newport Hospital welcomed Patricia “Patty” Sousa-Cooper, RN, BSN, OCN as its first Nurse Navigator.

The concept of “patient navigation” (PN) was founded and pioneered by New York physician, Dr. Harold Freeman during the 1990s in an effort to pair patients with “navigators” who could help guide them through the maze of the health care system during cancer treatment. The CCC at Newport Hospital has taken the PN concept and created a Nurse Navigator whose role is to support the varying needs of cancer patients on Aquidneck Island with the expertise of an oncology certified nurse.

In this new role, Patty, previously an oncology treatment nurse, helps patients overcome barriers they might face during their treatment. As the patient’s liaison between their medical team and social work, the goal of the navigator is for every patient to have what they need for a successful experience. From ensuring they have transportation in order to receive their treatment on time, to educating them about the many medications they’re taking, to dealing with insurance issues, and helping patients find social and emotional support in the community, the navigator is a patient’s ultimate resource—just one call away.

“As a treatment nurse, you hear about patient struggles as you get to know them over the sometimes lengthy appointments. Facilitating access to the resources that are available can be time consuming and the Navigator’s role helps to free the other oncology nurses to concentrate on the demanding aspects of treatment,” explains Patty.

Patty has been a nurse at Newport Hospital since 1998 and joined the CCC at Newport Hospital in 2015. Her services as Nurse Navigator are available to all patients treated at the CCC at Newport Hospital. She is Newport Hospital’s first, and currently only, Nurse Navigator.

Two weeks later, with Justin still healing from his traumatic brain injury, it was now

Christina’s turn for a trip to Newport Hospital. Going into labor in the evening, the couple

found themselves back at the Emergency Department, but this time with happy anticipation.

“It was nice to see the familiar and friendly faces at check-in when we arrived,” says Christina

of their quick entry to the ED before being whisked down the hall to the Noreen Stonor Drexel

Birthing Center. Just an hour and a half later, seven pound, 11 ounce baby Benno arrived!

“I really felt a connection with the nurses, every step of the way,” says Christina.

or the 4th consecutive year, the Frederick Henry Prince Memorial Fund at Newport Hospital has awarded grants to local community organizations that help keep children healthy and active. This year, 13 organizations have been selected to receive grants ranging from $1,250 to $10,000.

n February, Newport Hospital community members were welcomed to a new educational lecture series aimed at introducing

them to the services and clinicians at the hospital. All lectures are free and open to the public.

The first lecture, “The Cardiovascular Benefits of Exercise,” was presented by cardiologist Joseph Weiss, MD. There was

a good turnout and attendees were offered Balance Screenings as well as Blood Pressure checks. As a result of the screening,

high blood pressure was detected in one of the attendees who was

directed to follow up with her primary care physician.

Recent lecture topics have also included “Heartburn: You

Don’t Need to Live with It” presented in March by general surgeon

Guy Nicastri, MD. There was excellent audience participation and

participant feedback from the program included, “I’ll be making

an appointment to look into the possibility of surgical intervention,”

and, “Valuable information on options other than medications.”

In April, orthopedic surgeon Michael Bradley, MD, presented

“Move Without Pain: Joint Replacement at Newport Hospital” and

in May, hematologist/oncologist Alessandro Papa, MD, presented

“Everything You Wanted to Know: Cancer and Blood Disorders.”

Future topics will focus on Arthritis Pain, Treating Lyme Disease,

Varicose Veins, and Why You Should Have Your Child Vaccinated.

All lectures take place at Newport Hospital on 11 Friendship St.

in The Gudoian Conference Room or the Hill Courtyard. Parking is

International Tennis Hall of Fame & Museum provides opportunities for junior tennis programs.

Island Moving Company’s dance scholarship program allows second and third graders to attend weekly ballet classes and a recital.

Newport County YMCA’s 12-week physical fitness and nutrition education program for children 6-16 years old with a BMI of 85% or higher is aimed at reducing childhood obesity.

Newport County Youth Rugby Football Club invites 13-18 year old boys and girls to learn and play rugby.

Norman Bird Sanctuary’s Teen Green Trail Guide and EcoExplorer Programs encourage preteens through 12th graders to be trail guides during summer camp and weekend hikes.

Off the Curb’s outreach program brings dance and fitness classes to at risk students in Newport County to improve their health and better their lives.

The Potter League for Animals’ interactive program for 6-12 year olds allows them to exercise, play and interact with dogs,

cats and small animals.

RhodySquash after school program teaches squash to students after an hour of academic mentoring and also encourages community service opportunities.

Star Kids Scholarship program provides after school and summer activities for at-risk children enrolled in the Star Kids Scholarship program.

Newport Hospital welcomes the following new members to our team of talented professionals

Ginny Bass, MD and Gail Carreau, MD, are both obstetrician-gynecologists who have joined Newport Women’s Health at Newport Hospital. Dr. Bass is a graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina and completed her residency at Carilion Clinic at Virginia Tech Carilion in Roanoke, Virginia. Dr. Carreau, a graduate of George Washington University School of Medicine, completed her residency at the Yale University-affiliated Bridgeport Hospital in Connecticut.

Edward Donnelly, MD, is the medical director of our nationally certified stroke program. A graduate of Dartmouth Medical School, Dr. Donnelly completed a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology at Rhode Island Hospital, where he also completed a residency in neurology. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Donnelly’s office is located in the Borden-Carey Building at Newport Hospital.

Celine Paillot, PhD, joined the medical staff as a psychologist and clinical neuropsychologist with Newport Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health, an extension of Bradley Hospital, available at Newport Hospital. She completed her doctoral training at the Paris X University specializing in clinical psychology and held a post-doctoral position at Columbia University COPE Clinic.

Liza F. Famador, MD and A. Camille Montes, MD, are the newest members of the Portsmouth Family Medicine staff on Chase Road. Dr. Famador earned her medical degree at the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center in the Philippines and Dr. Montes received her medical degree at the University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines. Both completed their residencies in family medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Shadyside and have particular interest in preventive medicine, newborn and child care and women’s health.

Derek Jenkins, MD, is the newest orthopedic surgeon to join the Newport Hospital’s staff. Dr. Jenkins received his medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School and completed his general and orthopaedic surgery internship and residency at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City and an adult reconstruction of the hip and knee fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He specializes in adult reconstruction of the hip and knee, with a special interest in direct anterior total hip replacement, gap balanced total knee replacement, partial knee replacement and revision of failed/infected joint replacements.

Bradford C. Gray, MD, FACS, recently joined the Newport Hospital staff as a general surgeon. Dr. Gray received degrees in biomedical engineering and electrical engineering from Syracuse University before earning his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in general surgery at Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington, PA.
