Avera’s Hospice House Provides Families Loving Surroundings as They Say Goodbye

the 24/7 response to any need, question or concern, she said the hospice house was a true godsend.

“The coffee was fresh and the scent of cookies baking was in the air. The staff took time for us, explaining things that we didn’t understand. They were straightforward, but never unkind. They walked us through every step,” she said. “I wish everyone could have the deepest possible care at the end of their life.”

The Avera Hospice House takes pride in its compassion. Families are encouraged to decorate their loved one’s room, to bring music and pets. They can sleep, eat, shower and do laundry, all nearby the one they love. Megan Zweber is a social worker on the Avera@Home Hospice team. She explained hospice helps families face the crisis that is death.

“It’s about making it as tranquil as possible. The house is an essential, private space where the family can prepare, know their loved one is receiving physical, emotional and spiritual support,” she said. “Without hospice, some families face strong, painful emotions as they try to find care or give the care themselves.”

Zweber said that while not all families can afford the care offered at the Hospice House, generous contributors continue to support an Avera Sacred Heart Foundation endowment that will help make this dignity-driven end-of-life service a reality for more families.

Corrine Biesman’s daughter, Sherry Schempp, said the care her mother received at Hospice House is something she wishes every family could experience.

“It’s so calming. Nothing ever seemed overlooked,” she said. “I really thank God that mom was at this facility. They provided so much support and it made everything special. I know it’s what I would want for myself. I would encourage anyone who can to support the endowment. Every family can benefit from hospice.”

Nate Hicks’ wife, Kristen, said she felt the hospice’s home-like nature gave her and her family refuge in a tough situation.

“We knew Carol wanted to be at home and comfortable and that’s what the hospice house made possible for us – it did feel like it was ours,” she said. “Most of us have experienced loss. The hospice house service – from the people who cared for us all to the large spaces and the way the rooms are set up – all of it gave that comfort of home to us. That was a real blessing.”

Zweber said the endowment can give more families the positive experience that is embodied in hospice care.

“Medication aides are present 24 hours a day, and a bath aide visits the patient daily to give extra care. In collaboration

with the hospice team, the staff at the hospice house is able to provide an extra layer of support throughout the grieving process, making it as easy as possible,” she said. “Individuals who provide support through the endowment are giving families the gift of holistic care during the most intimate times. Supporters are honoring not only the terminally ill, but also their loved ones.”

The personal attention Zweber mentioned makes crucial differences for families spending time with their loved ones. Nate Hicks said the hospice house staff made a crucial difference during a time in his life that was overwhelming and unfamiliar.

“Until you step into that situation – saying goodbye to someone you love so much – you have no idea how hard it really is, and you only have one chance to say it,” he said. “For our family, the help of the hospice team made it better. They made it easier for my mom, and they were there for all of us. That sort of face-to-face support – there’s nothing like it.”

With this publication, we celebrate YOU and every contributor to the Avera Sacred Heart Foundation. Thank you for helping bring exceptional health care to our community!

Whether care is needed at the beginning of life, at the end of life, or somewhere in between, Avera is here for you - serving the continuum of care.

The end-of-life piece was completed in April 2016 with the opening of the Hospice House at Avera Majestic Bluffs. In just a few short weeks, we will be celebrating the first anniversary of that opening and have much to be grateful for:

• A space that offers warmth and comfort – that family can make their own• Caring staff that repeatedly go the extra mile to provide comfort to the families we serve• Wonderful families that allow us to walk with them on their journey• Donors like you who have contributed to the hospice house endowment

from the avera SacreD heart founDation office

Families have shared that one of the greatest blessings of the hospice house is the opportunity to shed the worries of day-to-day care and focus on what’s truly important - the love and peace of those last days together.

With the completion of our hospice house endowment, we hope to provide this kind of end-of-life experience for all - regardless of the ability to pay. While every day we get closer to our goal, we still have work to do.

Please help us by sharing our story, praying for our success and contributing what you can. Together let’s give every family peace and dignity in death.

Warmest Regards,

Sheila KuchtaExecutive Director

This year marked the 9th anniversary of Simply d’vine – almost a decade of raising money to support families in their fight against cancer. Attendees enjoyed a wonderful night of fabulous food and wine, while raising nearly $94,000 to support the cancer fund.

Dairy farmer, Doug Gansebom from Osmond, Nebraska, was grateful to be amidst the night’s festivities. Having recently finished radiation treatments at the Avera Cancer Institute in Yankton, he felt very blessed. His treatments had killed the tumor and blood tests showed normal levels of tumor markers. He now has good reason for hope and shared his appreciation of people who support fundraisers like Simply d’Vine.

“The Avera Cancer Institute Yankton is a hotspot for healing,” he stated. “It takes money. Everything takes money. This place uses it wisely. It helped me everywhere I needed help. You want to keep that bucket full so they can dip into it when they need it.”

As patients walk through our doors daily, we are thankful for your generosity. It is because of many generous food and wine vendors, sponsors, volunteers, and event attendees that the foundation can support cancer prevention and cancer patients. Thank you for keeping our bucket full so that we can support our patients with some of these services:

• Patient transportation and lodging assistance• Educational classes, counseling, and other support• Patient and family financial assistance• Complimentary massages and exercise classes• Complimentary Fitness consultations and discounted Wellness Center memberships• Avera Cancer Navigation Center Services

The Midco Foundation recently supported efforts to create a comfortable healing environment for pediatric surgical patients at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital. Thanks to a grant from Midco, young patients can watch movies, children’s videos and shows while waiting for surgery.

Two new mobile television units purchased with Midco Foundation grant funds can be easily rolled in to any room. These units are a continuation of recent effort to create a comfortable, anxiety-free healing environment for children having surgical procedures at Avera Sacred Heart.

“The Avera Perioperative Services team extends our sincere appreciation to Midco for the gifted television units. These units will particularly benefit our pediatric patients and will provide entertaining distraction as they await their surgery or outpatient testing,” said Tiffany Weeks, director of Pre & Post Surgical Services.

“Being in the hospital can be very frightening for children and there is great evidence supporting the use of play, movies, music, and distraction to lessen the psychological and emotional distress of such an event,” she continued.

“Immediate access to age appropriate movies, music, and television will be a wonderful resource and will certainly support our goal to calm fears and positively impact the child and family experience. “

Bankers at First Dakota National Bank in Yankton honored and supported women with a Real Men Wear Pink fundraiser for breast cancer awareness in October. They donated $500 to the Avera Cancer Institute Yankton.

We appreciate the continued support and generosity of the men from First Dakota,” said Avera Cancer institute Yankton Director, Darla Gullikson.

“Donations such as these help support services that we offer to our patients on a daily basis. For example, we have a group of breast cancer survivors that come to our office every week for exercise classes. It’s just one of the special services we can offer thanks to the generosity of donors.”

Area Bomgaars stores supported cancer patients and their families with a Ladies Night of holiday shopping this past December.

According to Yankton store manager, Doug Nissen, they were overwhelmed by local response to the special night of shopping and pleased to support the cancer cause. The stores generously shared part of the night’s proceeds with cancer centers in the Midwest.

Avera facilities including the Avera Cancer Institute of Yankton, Avera Creighton Hospital in Creighton, Nebraska, and Avera St. Anthony’s of O’Neill, Nebraska benefitted from the shopping night.

While holidays are always made special for residents of the Majestic Bluffs senior living community, the collaborative efforts of volunteers, Avera staff, family, and friends like you showered them with love this past Christmas season.

A holiday giving program that included adopting care center neighborhoods, giving donations to purchase items from a Giving Tree, and stuffing Christmas stockings for residents was embraced by the entire community.

Over 300 residents at Avera Sister James Care Center received stockings filled with goodies on their doors Christmas eve. Care Center neighborhoods received new bookcases, games, and other items from their wish lists along with donations towards activities throughout the year.

“Whether our elders have family and friends nearby or not, one thing they do have in common is a love of surprises and celebrations,” said Cindy Sage, director of Nursing at Avera Sister James Care Center. “Staff and members of the community sharing their time, talents and love with our elders this season made it that much more special,” she added.
