Open Source Tools for Project Management The benchmark was based on a set of tools completely free to use with multiple hosting solutions, with various customized modules with different types of licensing (Open Source, GPL, CPAL, and so on). Today the market offers various Project Management tools. Should we bet on Open Source solutions? Instead of answering the question, we would like to present alternative solutions to the most relevant, reputable and expensive market tools (ex, HP PPM, Clarity, EPM, and so on). This benchmark aims to be the beginning of new approaches.

Project-Open

Application created by a team based in Spain and Germany. With project planning Top-down/Bottom-up

features, projects may consist in an arbitrary number of subprojects and tasks. Using a top-down approach, a

project total budget is split over a number of subprojects. In terms of financial estimations, the system

indicates if the sum of planned units for each task in a subproject is beyond its estimated budget. Using a

bottom-up approach, a group of tasks can be aggregated to a sub-project, and multiple subprojects can form

a main project. The budget of the main project is calculated based on the estimations made on a task level.

The capacity management is performed based on resource assignments defined on a project level, a resource

report indicates availability, or oversubscription, of resources across all open projects. Project completion

tracking: Each task owner reports task completeness. A weighted total completeness is calculated by the

system. Export to/import from OpenProj, GanttProject and Microsoft Project: Projects can be exported and

further edited using either of the three desktop applications. The results than can be re-imported. New

Projects Templates can be created based on existing projects.

When it comes to web-based project management software, there are many choices in the market – all with

various degrees of sophistication and usability. Project-Open has been around for a few years, but never

received the recognition that it deserves. With the recently developed version 3.4, we recommend the

inclusion on the short list when considering new project management systems. When expected to be another

task scheduling tool, think again. In addition to traditional project planning and tracking, the comprehensive

software package also supports a number of other processes in the areas of finance management, human

resources, collaboration, CRM, and much more.

Project.net

Enterprise scale project management application for Microsoft Windows and Unix operating systems.

Project.net is commercial open source. Support and training are available from Project.net Inc. of Bedford,

Massachusetts. IT was founded in 1999 to develop project collaboration applications using Internet

technologies. The company's initial focus was building and deploying a collaboration engine for use by public

and private web-based exchanges. In 2002, PC Magazine awarded Project.net with the Editors' Choice award

in a review of web-based project management applications. In 2006 launched the open source version of

Project.net’s project and portfolio management (PPM) application. The Open Source Business Conference

awarded three open source projects (including Project.net) as "ones to watch" shortly after the acquisition.

It is currently used by more than 50,000 people worldwide to help manage their projects[citation needed].

University Business Magazine published an article on Project and Portfolio Management that reviews the

need for and use of Project.net in the facilities department at Cornell University.

Project.net is the first Open Source PPM Application to be included in Gartner's: Magic Quadrant for IT

Project and Portfolio Management. Project.net was included in the June 7, 2010 report ID Number:

G00200907.

Software for project portfolio management - and at a great price since it's an Open Source program.

However, it is important to note that just because the price is right doesn't make it a good fit for small

businesses or freelancers - it's much too much for this group. Instead, Project.net is best for start-up

companies, IT, and enterprises that require a detailed project management option for their software.

Reminds software Trac except that Redmine is written in Ruby using the Rails framework. Redmine contains

a lot of functionality geared heavily towards developers. It’s powerful but may take some getting used to.

This open source project management application is ideal for developers who are familiar with Ruby and

need self-hosted software written in their favorite language. The default interface is not as clean as Open

Atrium or Collaborative, but the whole point of open source is that it is free and you can contribute your

enhancements back to the development community.

Agile – Agile software development is a group of software development methods based on iterative and incremental development, where requirements and solutions

evolve through collaboration between self-organizing, cross-functional teams. It promotes adaptive planning, evolutionary development and delivery, a time-

boxed iterative approach, and encourages rapid and flexible response to change. It is a conceptual framework that promotes foreseen interactions throughout

the development cycle.

Cloud Computing – The delivery of computing and storage capacity as a service to a community of end-recipients. The name comes from the use of a cloud-shaped

symbol as an abstraction for the complex infrastructure it contains in system diagrams. Cloud computing entrusts services with a user's data, software and

computation over a network.

CPAL – Common Public Attribution License ("CPAL") is a free software license approved by the Open Source Initiative in 2007. Your goal is to be a general license for

software distributed through a network. It is based on Mozilla Public License.

CRM – Customer Relationship Management (CRM) is a widely implemented model for managing a company’s interactions with customers, clients, and sales prospects. It

involves using technology to organize, automate, and synchronize business processes—principally sales activities, but also those for marketing, customer

service, and technical support.

ERP – Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems integrate internal and external management information across an entire organization,

embracing finance/accounting, manufacturing, sales and service, customer relationship management, etc. ERP systems automate this activity with an

integrated software application. The purpose of ERP is to facilitate the flow of information between all business functions inside the boundaries of the

organization and manage the connections to outside stakeholders.

Gantt Chart – Gantt chart is a type of bar chart, developed by Henry Gantt, that illustrates a project schedule. Gantt charts illustrate the start and finish dates of the

terminal elements and summary elements of a project. Terminal elements and summary elements comprise the work breakdown structure of the project.

SaaS – Software as a service (SaaS, pronounced sæs or sɑs), sometimes referred to as "on-demand software"[citation needed], is a software delivery model in which

software and associated data are centrally hosted on the cloud. SaaS is typically accessed by users using a thin client via a web browser.

WBS – A work breakdown structure (WBS), in project management and systems engineering, is a deliverable oriented decomposition of a project into smaller

components. It defines and groups a project's discrete work elements in a way that helps organize and define the total work scope of the project.

GPL – GNU General Public License (GNU GPL or simply GPL) is the most widely used free software license. The GPL is the first copyleft license for general use, which

means that derivative works can only be distributed under the terms of same license. Under this philosophy, the GPL grants recipients the rights of free

software definition and uses copyleft to ensure the freedoms are preserved, even when the software is changed or added. This is in distinction to the premise

of free software licenses, in which the BSD licenses are the standard examples.

Online Collaboration Tool – Collaborative software (also referred to as groupware) is computer software designed to help people involved in a common task achieve

goals. One of the earliest definitions of “collaborative software” is, "intentional group processes plus software to support them." (Peter and Trudy Johnson-

Lenz).

Open Source – In production and development, open source is a philosophy, or pragmatic methodology that promotes free redistribution and access to an end

product's design and implementation details.

Proprietary – Proprietary Software is a software licensed under exclusive legal right of the copyright holder. The license is given the right to use the software under

certain conditions preventing other uses, such as modification, distribution or re-engineering.

“1st Open Source Project Portfolio Management (PPM) Solution Included in Magic Quadrant”

Bedford, Ma. — July 20, 2010 — Project.net Inc., the leader in collaborative Project Management and Portfolio Management (PPM), has been included by Gartner, Inc. in

its "Magic Quadrant for IT Project and Portfolio Management Applications" research report. Project.net provides organizations with an enterprise-grade, customizable

and robust alternative to expensive and proprietary monolithic applications.

"It's great that Gartner has recognized Open Source as a credible contender in this space that has historically been the exclusive purview of large software vendors," says

Peter Winston, CEO. "We've long known that Project.net's open source approach is ideal for implementing effective, flexible, and affordable Project Management."

Long a leader in innovative project and portfolio management, Project.net is being downloaded from SourceForge hundreds of times per day and through strong

international adoption is increasingly becoming Where the World Works™. The extensive Project.net community enables adopters of all sizes and capabilities to optimize

the performance of their organization within Project.net's collaborative and comprehensive project management framework.

In addition to acknowledging that Project.net is "one of just a select few open-source/commercial PPM systems available" Gartner also notes Project.net's mid-market

appeal and penetration, “In addition to supporting up to thousands of end users, Project.net can also support very small project workgroups." Gartner also

acknowledged Project.net's extensibility with other packages that expand overall functionality and capability.

Gartner, Inc.’s Magic Quadrant for IT Project and Portfolio Management report is available for purchase form Gartner's website.

Eclipse – Eclipse Public License (EPL) was created to be a free software license easier to use for business rules and presents the simplest copyleft licenses such as the

GNU General Public License (GPL). EPL licensed users can use the programs, modify them, copy and modify versions in some cases being forced to provide

their own changes.

LGPL – A lesser general public license written in 1991 and updated in 1999. It is a free software license written as a compromise between GPL and the most permissive

licenses (BSD, MIT). The main difference between the GPL and the LGPL is that it allows the association with programs that aren’t under the GPL or LGPL,

including proprietary software.

GPL v2 – The main difference in this version to version 1 (one) is that there is a clause that says "if someone has restrictions, preventive of distribute software covered by

the GPL license in a way that respects the freedom of others to do so, this someone cannot distribute in any way.

GPL v3 – Were introduced changes to the license under the scope of software patents, license compatibility and free software definition of source code and hardware

restrictions on software modification.

Open Source Tools for Customer Relationship Management The research goal is to evaluate the best CRM (Customer Relationship Management) Open Source solutions that include support, ensuring quality guarantees on an enterprise use. Besides the identified relevant features that help analyze any Open Source solution, the main focus of this benchmarking is to evaluate the core features of an ERP system, such as: Sales Cycle - with contact management, exploration, monitoring and sales

forecasts; Service / Customer support - managing service processes, incidents, complaints and

knowledge; Marketing - campaign management through sending mass e-mails to target

customers or newsletters, allowing the analysis of results of the same.

Additionally to the actual mobility needs, the existence of solutions was also evaluated

and the integration with social networks (Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter) and existence

of extra modules like e-Commerce, ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) and Project

Management.

AGPL – Affero General Public License, free software license that added to GPL clauses about the use of software through networks. These clauses require that the source

code is completely made available to any user of the network, normally a web application

BSD – BSD or Berkeley Software Distribution is a family of free software permissive licenses, whose original owners were regents from the California University

(Berkeley), because this license was first written in this university. Being a permissive free software license, it places minimal restrictions to the way software

may be redistributed, in contrast with the copyleft licenses that have reciprocity and similarity requirements.

GNU – GNU General Public License, GNU GPL or simply GPL is a designation of the free software license conceived by Richard Matthew Stallman in 1989, under the Free

Software Foundation GNU project. GPL is the most used license in free software projects, due to its adoption to the GNU project and to the GNU/Linux

operating system. The software used to manage Wikipedia’s content is covered by this license, in version 2.0 or superior.

GPL v2 – The main difference between this version and the version 1 is the existence of a clause that says “if someone has imposed restrictions, that don’t allow the

distribution of software with the GPL license in a way that respect the freedom from other users to do the same, that someone may not distribute it in any

way”.

MIT – It’s a permissive free software license created by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It’s compatible with the GPL license

MPL – Mozilla Public License is a free software license, mainly used in Mozilla software and software related to it. Copyleft license is similar but not as rigid as the

distribution. You can create a proprietary version of a code under this license. Not compatible with GPL, ie, a module covered by the Mozilla license and a

module covered by the GPL license and can not be legally bound.

AGPL – Affero General Public License, free software license that added to GPL clauses about the use of software through networks. These clauses require that the source

code is completely made available to any user of the network, normally a web application.

Apache v2 – Such as the remaining Apache licenses, Apache V2 allows copy, modify and distribution of the software as well as to extend the patent rights that are

normally destined to who issues the license.

CPAL – This license is based on the Mozilla Public License, and adds the following conditions: the original developer can include its information in certain parts of the

code, and this has to be shown on the screen of the application. Additionally, when the software is executed as a network service, is triggered by an action

name copyleft which prevents that an “ASP loophole” occurs, making the available source code available to any network user.

B2C – Business-to-consumer or business-to-customer, refers to the trade directly made between the producer, seller or service provider and the final consumer, through

the Internet.

BI – Enterprise Intelligence, or Business Intelligence, is a term from the Gartner Group. This concept emerged on the 80’s decade and describes the ability of a

corporation to access data and explore information (normally contained in a Data Warehouse/Data Mart), analyzing and developing perceptions and

understandings about this information, which allows an incremental and information guided decision-making.

CRM – According to Brent Frei, Onyx’s Software founder, “Customer Relationship Management is a set of processes and technologies that generate relationships with

effective and potential customers, and with business partners through marketing, sales and services, independently from the communication channel”.

ORM – Object-relational mapping is a development technique used to reduce impedance of object oriented programming, using relational databases.

POS – Refers to a point of sale or point of service, which usually is an ATM terminal.

SCM – Supply Chain Management is the consumers’ business processes integration through the products, services and information providers, with the goal of adding

value to the client.

GPL v2 – The main difference between this version and the version 1 is the existence of a clause that says “if someone has imposed restrictions, that don’t allow the

distribution of software with the GPL license in a way that respect the freedom from other users to do the same, that someone may not distribute it in any

way”.

GPL v2+ – Covers the GPL V2 and later versions.

GPL v3 – Some changes regarding software patents, license compatibility, free software, definition of source code and hardware restrictions were introduced to the

license.

MIT – It’s a permissive free software license created by Institute of Technology of Massachusetts. It’s compatible with the GPL license.

Open Source Tools for Content Management Systems

The frameworks evaluated allow focus on date and version of each one, type of license and

the supported databases. Through these characteristics is generated an idea from the level of

maturity and update, as well as databases that let the user integrate taking into consideration

the type of license used.

The most relevant features and characteristics are available in Content Management

Systems. We divided in Security (email verification, session management and versioning),

Support (online-help, test framework and commercial support), Ease of Use, Performance

(database replication, load balancing and static content export), Management (web

statistics, trash and workflow engine), Interoperability (ftp support, wai xhtml compliant and

compliant), Flexibility (cgi-mode support, multi-lingual content and support multi-site

deployment), Built-in Applications and commerce (e-commerce).

AGPL – Affero General Public License, free software license that added to GPL clauses about the use of software through networks. These clauses require that the

source code is completely made available to any user of the network, normally a web application.

Apache License – Free software license created by the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) compatible with version 3 of the GPL

Buil-in Applications – The applications system has built-in such as blog, chat, Weather, Wiki, among others.

CGI-mode Support – The system can run in CGI mode for development purposes or in low-end systems.

Commerce – The system provides built-in applications or add-ons of commerce type (such as: shopping cart, PayPal, iTransact, among others).

Commercial Support – The support can be purchased to a commercial organization with trained professionals.

CPAL - This license is based on the Mozilla Public License, and adds the following conditions: the original developer can include its information in certain parts of the

code, and this has to be shown on the screen of the application. Additionally, when the software is executed as a network service, is triggered by an action

name copyleft which prevents that an “ASP loophole” occurs, making the available source code available to any network user.

CPL – Free software license published by IBM. It has some similarities with LPG but differs in some key points, namely as regards to the copyleft requirements. Not

compatible with GPL.

Database Replication – The system must be able to read and write through the slaves to the master database.

Ease of Use – The system provides some tools that allow users a easy experience in editing or modifying in a way quick and simple. (Drag and Drop or Undo).

Email Verification – The system sends an activation key to users to ensure that they have introduced a valid email address.

FTP Support – The system allows user to upload the internal content and/ or files via FTP.

GPL – GNU General Public License, GNU GPL or simply GPL is a designation of the free software license conceived by Richard Matthew Stallman in 1989, under the Free

Software Foundation GNU project. GPL is the most used license in free software projects, due to its adoption to the GNU project and to the GNU/Linux

operating system. The software used to manage Wikipedia’s content is covered by this license, in version 2.0 or superior. < >

GPL v2 – The main difference between this version and the version 1 is the existence of a clause that says “if someone has imposed restrictions, that don’t allow the

distribution of software with the GPL license in a way that respect the freedom from other users to do the same, that someone may not distribute it in any

way”.

GPL v3 – Some changes regarding software patents, license compatibility, free software, definition of source code and hardware restrictions were introduced to the

license.

Load Balancing – The system allows placing a load balancer in front to separate calls for multiple servers. This requires that the user sessions can be passed between all

nodes in a transparent way.

MIT License – It is a permissive license for free software created by Institute of Technology of Massachusetts. It is compatible with the GPL license.

Mozilla Public License – Mozilla Public License is a free software license, mainly used in Mozilla software and software related to it. Copyleft license is similar but not as

rigid as the distribution. You can create a proprietary version of a code under this license. Not compatible with GPL, ie, a module covered by the Mozilla license

and a module covered by the GPL license and can not be legally bound.

Multilingual Content Integration – The system supports a multilingual version of each content object without the need to republish the object. For example, if yhe user

create a FAQ in english, all that is needed to display the FAQ in spanish or in another language is just to translate the content, not create another object FAQ.

Then, depending on user preferences appears one version or other.

Multi-Site Deployment – Is the system is able to join in a deploy multiple websites. This means that installing the software only once, can have the number of websites

wanted. It also means that when it comes time to upgrade this can only be done in one place and not separately for each website.

Open Source – Open Source is software that is available in source code form: the source code and other copyrights holders for copyright are provided under a free

software license that permits users to study, change, improve and also to distribute the software.

Proprietary – Proprietary Software is a software licensed under exclusive legal right of the copyright holder. The license is given the right to use the software under

certain conditions preventing other uses, such as modification, distribution or re-engineering.

Session Management – System provides a tool to enable administrator only to see who is currently in the application, what are doing and whether you need to force its

log out.

WAI Compliant – System follows the specification W3C to WAI.

GPL – GNU General Public License, GNU GPL or simply GPL is a designation of the free software license conceived by Richard Matthew Stallman in 1989, under the Free

Online Collaboration Tool – Online collaboration, or online collaboration on a massive scale, is a form of collaboration in which large groups of people usually work

independently on the same project. These projects typically take place on the Internet using social software, which primarily produce relations, eg social

networking service and support tools for collaboration, producing a collaborative product, eg wiki platforms, which provide a potentially source of

collaboration and knowledge sharing..

GPL v2 – The main difference between this version and the version 1 is the existence of a clause that says “if someone has imposed restrictions, that don’t allow the

distribution of software with the GPL license in a way that respect the freedom from other users to do the same, that someone may not distribute it in any

way”.

GPL v3 – Some changes regarding software patents, license compatibility, free software, definition of source code and hardware restrictions were introduced to the

license.

Session Management – System provides a tool to enable administrator only to see who is currently in the application, what are doing and whether you need to force its

log out.

Open Source Tools for Systems & Infrastructures The study includes Open Source Operating Systems products that are often used and include support. We addressed the features that are considered most relevant comparing with the level of Operating Systems and, therefore, allow a more complete evaluation about the capacity of each technology analyzed. Thus, the analysis of all these features allow an objective comparison between different Operating Systems and which one can adapt better to the customer needs. During its preparation were evaluated several parameters, such as: Alternatives without costs; Packet format; Which distribution is based; Last version of the kernel; Frequency with new versions are available; Duration of the support; Lowest annual price.
