“WWII was underway as I graduated high school. After I was drafted into the army, I shipped out to Marseille, France, where my company was trucked up to the Vosges Mountains, captured by the Germans and sent to a prison camp near Leipzig. After 70 days we were liberated by Patton’s army. When I came back from the war, I thought I wanted to be an engineer in China to help them build the country but college showed me a different path. I became a Presbyterian minister, after attending Princeton Theological Seminary, and was the first pastor at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Groton, Connecti-cut. I am grateful to be here.”

Lora Bartult turned 100 in July and says the secret to a long life is keeping active. “I love to travel, and we traveled a lot. Ha-waii, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Reno, and Canada. I also love to meet people, so I help out here at Middlebrook Farms in our country store, the office, on family tours. Until I was 95 I volunteered at St. Vincent’s Hospital in every department, and then I figured I would let someone else do it. It’s all about the people and the community.”

Ray and Helen Lobovits have been mar-ried 65 years. They met in Sunday school and for their first date went to Howard Johnson’s and a movie. “When I was in the army, I jumped the fence at Fort Dix to meet Helen for lunch.” After serving in WWII, which included storming the beach on D-Day, Ray returned home to Helen to raise a family. “We had a good life, and traveled all over the world. I would never go anywhere without Helen. I would marry her all over again.”

Alice Dossett is an artist and encourages others to be artists too. “I was in Copley Square in Boston presenting my work at an art show recently when a lady asked how much I wanted for a picture. I said $150, but I just couldn’t sell it. I liked it and decided to keep it. My personality is to look for anything new and different and get involved. If you are interested in art, my advice is to go right at it and do the best you can and you will improve and you will be happy with your outcome. It’s a lovely release.”

“In my family we were farmers, we were readers, and so many nights after all of the farm chores were done, we would read aloud to each other. We read great literature, and we had fun. When I was young, I played school in an abandoned one-room school house where I would teach the neighborhood children their lessons. Later, I became a professor of Ancient Greek and Latin at Trinity College. I’ve known since I was six years old I wanted to teach. Teaching is sharing what you know and love with others. If you don’t share what you’ve learned, it probably wasn’t worth learning in the first place.”

Dr. Jack McIntosh is currently the fore-most expert on sauropod dinosaurs. Over the course of more than 30 years, Dr. McIntosh has made major contribu-tions to the field, writing many papers and several books, and serving as a consultant to natural history museums in New York and New Haven. He’s even had a dinosaur named after him, Brontomerus mcintoshi. “When I was five years old in Pittsburgh, I was excited about dino-saurs and visited the Carnegie Museum. I would go down to Pittsburgh and would get to know the people in charge. Most get over it at five. I didn’t.”

As a boy Harry Takesian lived on a farm with seven sisters and three brothers, “where there was always a way to get into mischief.” In high school he was the pitch-er and captain the year his high school team won the baseball championship. Harry served in Europe during WWII, and then returned home, worked as a milk-man to pay his way through school, and became a manufacturer’s engineer at a company that encouraged experimenta-tion. “I learned early on the art of listening, the importance of trying new things. My advice in life is, learn something new every day.”

Dr. Liza Yassayan Dulgarian enjoyed a long career in medicine, caring for children with neurologic disorders. As a child neurologist, Liza was on the staff at Boston Children’s Hospital and on the faculty at Harvard Medical School, where besides caring for children, she nurtured a new generation of doctors in this challenging field. “We tried to teach medical students and residents lessons beyond just medicine, such as how to interact and empathize with patients and families. When you teach young doctors and know you are contributing to their development, it is so fulfilling. Several of our residents have gone on to become leaders in their specialties.”

Mary Michaud is 87 years young. “I am an avid exerciser, I love to cook and I love my family. In our Bistro I make cookies, coffee cake, beef stews, pea soup, whatever we feel like. My sister Sadie, who’s 95, recently came to visit and made pierogis with us, and often my grandchildren visit and cook with me, too. I believe that when you lose someone you love, it is best to turn to what you love to do the best, and for me that’s cooking. Families are a blessing and I believe everyone feels the same.”

Filomena Scioli moved from Italy to the United States in 1956—but she has never forgotten her hometown of Melissa. Famous for her Italian cooking, Filomena is a stickler for fresh ingredients, like those she can find at her Benchmark community garden. “I make lasagna, gnocchi, pizza, meatballs. We cook with fresh ingredients—only the freshest! I use tomatoes from our garden, basil, whatever is in season. I cook in our community’s Country Kitchen. I cook because it brings back memories of Italy.”

Louis Pugliese is known as the artist-in-residence at Capitol Ridge at Providence. “I didn’t become an artist until I retired. It was almost natural for me to pick up an art after I left architecture, and I’m glad I did. When I came to Benchmark, I took up art in earnest. I studied and worked at it diligently and have become almost a professional at it. My advice for someone who might want to take up art is simple: the only thing an artist can do is examine his or her conscience and figure out if they have a natural inclination for artwork. The rest of it involves a high degree of concentration and dedication.”

Stanley Gird is a cartoonist in retirement after working as a fine carpenter in Beacon Hill and elsewhere in Boston. “I used to work as a carpenter, and I would carry my wooden tool box on my shoulder—it was too heavy to carry by hand. I designed and built my own house in Newton, Massachusetts, and created a shoe shine box, which I still have in my apartment. When I was learning my trade, I would work closely with the old timers. They liked to teach me and that’s where I learned to build. Now at 95 I am a cartoonist and about to exhibit my work.”
