Forest-Based Bioenergy Community of Practice and Other Educational Resources

Page 2: Ben Jackson 706-542-9051 bjackson@warnell.uga

An Internet-based educational partnership of the 74, 1862 and 1890 institutions of the Land-Grant university system that helps people improve their lives by providing access to objective research-based information and learning opportunities.

Page 3: Ben Jackson 706-542-9051 bjackson@warnell.uga

Community of Practice (CoP)

• Loosely coupled group of practitioners who work and learn together around a certain broad topic over an extended period of time

• Operates on the basis of joint interest, spontaneous interaction, and mutual development

• The site to collaboratively generate educational products to serve their designated Communities of Interest

Page 4: Ben Jackson 706-542-9051 bjackson@warnell.uga

Community of Interest (CoI)

• Four interest groups or clientele– General public, individuals and communities, who are

seeking quality information on forest-based bioenergy opportunities.

– Extension educators looking for a reliable resource to help them respond to client needs.

– Professional forest resource managers, such as researchers, USDA Forest Service, state forestry professionals and private forestry consultants.

– Policy makers and legislators who need viable and accurate information to serve their constituents.

Page 5: Ben Jackson 706-542-9051 bjackson@warnell.uga

Vision• Provides access to information, 24/7/365• Has national shared strength with local customized focus• Content is dynamic and evolving• Complements the Cooperative Extension System• Increases visibility of Cooperative Extension by reaching new

audiences and expanding partnership opportunities• Promotes collaborative development and minimizes

duplication• Provides on-going linkages between CoI

Page 6: Ben Jackson 706-542-9051 bjackson@warnell.uga

Values

• Embracing the values of the land-grant philosophy - learning, discovery and engagement

• Expanding access to objective, research based content.• Openly-shared educational product development.• Joint ownership and peer-reviewed content.• Better together than separate

Page 7: Ben Jackson 706-542-9051 bjackson@warnell.uga

Goals• Enhance accessibility and quality of relevant knowledge for existing

customers, partners, and Extension educators• Foster collaboration across the Extension network by creating

communities of practice to develop educational programs• Enhance Extension's technological capabilities through strategic

investments in shared cyber infrastructure• Continually adopt and employ new technology to help customers

acquire and apply knowledge to improve their quality of life

• Expand access to new partners and customers including an emphasis on the underserved

• Expand breadth and depth of content accessible at county offices• Enhance efficiencies of budget and expand resources across the

Extension network to support the overall Extension mission

Page 8: Ben Jackson 706-542-9051 bjackson@warnell.uga

Guiding Principles• “Openly shared” educational product development• Constant interaction with the CoI

– Strengthens educational products– Guides revisions and updates of content– Identify additional CoI needs.

• Authors will retain development recognition for promotion and tenure purposes

• Products developed will belong to the system (the CoP, eXtension and Cooperative Extension)

• Authors must leave content with the community if they are no longer a part of the CoP

• Members can use products created by the CoP in their own home institution’s programming efforts

• Others in your field with appropriate qualifications can and should make contributions/decisions

Page 9: Ben Jackson 706-542-9051 bjackson@warnell.uga

Principles (cont’d.)• Unselfish joint ownership and peer-reviewed development of

content• Change is continuous in most content areas• Some content is unique to local, state, or multi-state

audiences while some may apply to a national audience• We can no longer afford duplication of effort in the system and

that we must prepare to engage users in new ways• Understand CoPs are Extension-led and should include

individuals from research, teaching, private and other agency sectors
