they
didn t
take so
much
time
from
going
with the
gospel.
e are
anxious
to
go -
to
get
back overseas.
e
have been traveling to seven states visit ing
many
precious brethren, te lHng people about
plans
to
go
to
Thailand
and
a t
each p lace s inging
th e
song,
Out where the fields
are
whiter; Out where the workers are few. e
are
willing to
go where He wants us
to go,
do
what
He wants us to
do. Yes,
we re
willing to
go where He wants
us to go,
to
do what He wants us to
do.
In these
last
few months before
we
leave, our desire
to be working in Thailand has grown. e believe this comes from the Holy Spirit and from the
l e t t e r s
we get from Thailand and Taiwan.
I d
like
to
share
with
you some
recent
news from
Taiwan.
e get a
l e t t e r
from someone in
Taiwan about every week. e got a cassette recording from
the brethren
in
Taipei of
a Tuesday
night get-together. The singing was beautiful. hat encouraged me was that they had
learned
some new
songs. Their
personal words
to
us
were
so precious. They
spoke of
t h e i r joy in
the
Lord and t h e i r
love. They
are as
anxious to
see
us as we are
them.
e will
spend
about two
weeks in Taiwan on
our
way
to
Thailand. e just
go t
a
l e t t e r
from Jenny. She
told of
two peo
ple being
baptized who
were
students
of the correspondence
course which Chuck
Johnston is
working with. She said, Someday there will
have
many
people
accept
the
Lord
Jesus.
Praise
the
Lordl She
told of taking the
Sunday School children
to
a hospi ta l t o call on
the
sick
children. Speaking
of
Sunday School, Sandl Kang
has
written te l l ing
of
d iv id ing the Sunday

into

groups now
and
desiring any kind of S.S. v is ua l a id
and
handi
craft material we could send them. I f you

e
received
a
tape
from
Larry
Lang which he
partially
recorded
while visiting the crippled man, Mr. Yu, I used
to
care for. These
things
testify
of
how God
is
working
in
these
people s l ives .
News from Thailand includes a letter from Eugene Morse, another from a Chinese there. Brother
Yang, who will be a co-worker, when
we
get
there;
and a telephone
call
from J. Russel Morse,
who has
just
retiurned from a three month tr ip
to
Thailand. Bro. Yang
is
anxious for us to
arrive. Eugene
tells
of lli Chinese churches in remote villages that badly need teaching.
J . Russel called yesterday and
talked for
t h i r t y
minutes
of how the whole s i tuat ion
has
changed
in
Thailand. here
before
i t was
the
missionaries taking
the incentive
in
evangelism,
now,
the
villagers are coming to the missionaries and
saying, Please
come back to our
village
and give us
another
chance
to
hear the gospel. As J. Russel
said,
Theyare wondering what
this
world is coming to and
we
have the
answer.
So you can
see why we
are anxious to go.

I asked

Janet had said, You know
Jonnie, this
is very serious and you must
believe
that
Jesus is God's Son and Jonnie
said,
Of course, I do.
Oh
the precious faith of l i t t le

by my father. Jonnie is
anxious to t e l l people of his commitment.

Four of the Morse men (Eugene,

asked
to appear
at the

on
July
31st
to
answer
some
questions
concerning
some accusat ions
which
had
been
pr in ted
in
the Thai newspapers namely tha t they had des
troyed nat ional forests and
done log
poaching
in
the Lisu vi l lage
of
TungLung. They were detained
that day and
kept
behind bars unt i l August 6th.
The Morses
have been involved in evangelism
and some s oc ia l p ro je ct s in th i s vi l lage fo r some
years . Fourteen chi ldren from th i s

had been

so as

A ll th e
t rees that
were
cut were small
t rees which were secondary growth.
The
Lisu
had acquired t i
t le
papers
of ownership
for
this
land. This time
they
got
together and in ste ad o f
using the
conventional slash and
bti rn method,
decided
to
hire a t r ac tor
to
do a good
job o f g ettin g
out o ld
s tmps
and roots .
There was a
party
who had been wanting to get a hold
of
this
part icular
piece of
land
and now
as
he saw
the Lisu were
not
about to se l l
i t but were planning
for
the
future,
he
started to try to scare them away. (The
Lisu
have been a nomadic people in the past, moving
on toanew location when problems
arise.)
Because
of
greed and jealousy
this
party
started
making
accusations
aga inst the missionaries
who
had
a tt ri bu ted to
t he ir s ta b il it y, thinking
this
would
scare
them.
Instead, the
Lisu
came
to
the polic e
station
to
defend
the
mission
aries, saying
that
the land was
theirs
and
they
were
the
ones responsible
for re-clearing
the land.
They were,
at that time,
(Aug. Ji'd) arrested as
being
collaboraters
in
crime.
The Morses were released on Aug.
8th
on bail for 2^0,000 a piece (U.S.
12,?00)
which
was
put
up by Thai friends
in
the form
of
land as collateral. Then on Sept.
20th, in
court,
the case was completely
dropped
as there simply was no evidence or basis for the charges
mad e .
The Morses
helped
the
Lisu
get ba i l and
they
are a lso
out of j a i l now. There have been many
other complications
and th rea ts in the i r case and
they
cer ta inly
need our prayers. ^
This
whole
thing
has put
some
tremendous
strain on the Morses, the missionary commuhity as
a whole, and a l l Christ ians
in
Thailand. However,
we believe that
idien
there has been
sowing
in
tears there wil l be
reaping
in
joy.
Keep
praying.
You are a tremendous power

condi t ion from the rainy season but our Toyota t ruck is t e r r i f i c
I did not think i t would go up , th rough, and
across
some
of those
places. found three
b elie ve rs in th is
vi l lage .
One
man s
only contact with the Lord has been through the Lisu
language.
A Lisu preacher
in
a
nearby vil lage
has taught him. He
t es t i f i es of
how God has
changed
his
l ife
from
bad
habits of
opium
addiction,
smoking,
gambling,
and
restlessness
to
one of stabil i ty and peace. Anytime anyone is
sick
in
the
village he goes and prays
for
them
and t e s t i f i e s
of God s
power
to help. I t is th is
kind of witness
which has
brought
one
of
these
th ree
bel ievers
to Chris t . This man
asked
me to
teach him
to sing
some
hymns in
Chine se an d we did fa r in to the
night .
I also taught there on Sunday morn ing and
as
there
were
Lisu
present , one
man t ranslated into Lisu. I
also
showed them how
to prune
native
peach
t rees
which were about five
years
old
and did some
grafting
and
budding.
This vi l lage
was one of the f i r s t tha t the Morses worked
in
thus the
Lisu
church
nearby and the peach
t rees . A Lisu man
wants
me
to
help him
graf t
about 300
t rees
th i s
winter and the
U.W.
has
agreed to
supply
the scion wood (graf ting s tock) . This village has changed from a predomi
nately Lisu
vi l lage
to
a
predominately Chinese vil lage.
The Lisu have
asked for
us
to
bring
them some strawberry plants. I ve bought li and we are planning on another
t r ip
this week
end,
October 13-15.
They
are
going
to
share
gon
the
proceeds
from
the
f i r s t crop
since
I
bought the^plants . ByJthe, way.we_caD_graft. suc_ce.s^fully in late-summer-because,.there i s
a
2nd dormant s ea son
at this
time
after
which
the^trees
bloom and even bear some fruit. Can
any
of
you t e l l me why?
Could
i t
have
something
to
do
with
the
t e r r i f ic
amounts
of
i;ater
they get
and
then the
sudden
stop
in September?
Could i t have to do
with
the
shortage
of
sunl ight
during
the
ra iny season?
Because of the problem of i l l i teracy among the hi 11 Chinese, we have a tape ministry.
When
I
say
we , I mean many of us
missionaries.
Ten tape-players have been put at
my dis
posal and
sic of these
a re a lre ady
being used in the mountains. These
and tapes
are le f t in
various
communities to be
passed
around.
They
consis t
of
sermons, s tor ies songs and
scr ip
ture port ions. We
need v ery b ad ly to dev elop our tape
l ib ra ry in
Chinese.
I
think
the
church
in
Chiangraai
has
grown.
are
looking
for
a
bet ter
place
to
meet,
which can also serve
as
a place for the evangel is t . Brother Yang, to l ive while he is
in
town, and as a hostel for
visiting
out-of-town Chinese. The church,
with
the help of our
t i t h e
is
able
to rent i t s
own
place and buy chairs
and a
hand organ.
