9

The bulldozer is a versatile equipmentand can be used to scrape, pile, haul, level, roll, etc., and these functions areextensively utilized in such jobs asclearing land, felling trees, grubbing treestumps and loading dirt.

DOZER OPERATION

The bulldozer shows maximumeffectiveness in grading the groundsurface, flat and level and also in shortdistance hauling of material where thedistance is not more than 50 meters.

SIDE CASTING OPERATION

To push the dirt while casting it on oneside as in terracing a hill side or inspreading loose dirt to and along the edgeof a road being built, angle the blade for

increased work efficiency. In this type ofoperation, one side of the blade is undergreater load than the other side, causing themachine to swing to the side with greaterload. The operator, therefore, must operatethe steering levers more frequently tocompensate for this tendency.

CUTTING HARD GROUND ANDDITCHING

The break loose hard ground or make aditch, till the blade in order to use theblade end bit in digging into the ground.Where unusually hard ground isencountered, it is advisable to use ahydraulic ripper first to loosen the groundsurface before applying the bulldozer inthe above manner.

FEELING TREES AND GRUBBINGSTUMPS IN LAND CLEARINGOPERATION

Trees up to 25 cm (9.8 inch) in diameter canbe speedily felled by pushing against the treewith the blade held up high and then bybacking off and digging its roots off ground. In felling trees, no attempt should be made toutilize an impact of clashing the blade againstthe tree.

11

LEVELING OPERATION

Place a full load of dirt on the ground to be leveled and manipulate the control lever to lower orraise the blade slightly to compensate for irregularities, filling holes with dirt and cutting off highspots. This method is more effective than pushing an empty blade.

To finish the leveled ground surface, drive the machine backward, with the blade being dragged infloat condition This method, however, must be avoided on ground full of rock in order to protectthe blade against damage.

25

STOPPING THE TRACTOR

With the main clutch pedal depressedfully, slowly depress the brake pedal tostop the machine. Shift the gear shiftlever and F4 lever into Neutral andrelease the pedals. After stopping themachine, if it is not to be operated againimmediately, let the engine idle andlower the blade to the ground. Whileparking the machine on a slope, put theblocks against the track.

GEAR SHIFTING

Before shifting gears, bring the machineinto a complete stop.

STEERING

The machine may be steered by pulling thesteering clutch lever on the side of desireddirection of travel. Pulling the leverhalfway causes the steering clutch todisengage, allowing the machine to turnslowly.

Pulling the lever all the way backwardcauses the machine to make a sharp turn,by applying the steering brakes.

DRIVING INSTRCUTIONS

GOING DOWNHILLIn case of driving on s steep downgrade, besure to push the fuel control lever forwardto drop the engine speed and shift the gearshift lever into a low speed and allow thetractor to go down slowly by the use ofengine as a brake.

26

CAUTIONS:1. If the main clutch is disengaged while

the tractor is going downhill, its speedwill increase as it goes and accidentsmay occur.

2. While going downhill use the engineas a brake. If the tractor goes fasterthan the normal travel speed chosen bythe gear shift lever, depress the brakepedal sparingly to prevent the enginefrom overrunning.

DRIVING ON ROUGH GROUND

Drive slowly. Avoid sharp and repeatedturns.

Drive the machine with the track tensionrather tight so as to prevent the track shoesfrom a rapid wear.

GOING BACK ON A SLOPE

While going back up a slope, follow theabove instructions for DOWNHILL travel. That is shift the gear shift lever toREVERSE and use the engine as a brake.

CAUTION:Do not allow the machine to go backwarddownhill with the gear shift lever inFORWARD and the main clutch disengaged.Otherwise, if the main clutch which has beendisengaged is engaged in the course ofdescending the hill, the engine would bemade to run in reverse direction. This wouldsend blasts of gas back into the intake line, thus striking and burning the air cleanerelement. If such a case is encountered, stopthe tractor immediately and check the aircleaner for condition. Change the element iffound discoloured or burnt due to “back fire”and clean the air cleaner interior thoroughly.

Hold the blade as low as 400 mm abovethe ground surface for better stability ofthe machine.

To run over an obstruction, such as a logor a ditch bank, operate the machine in lowgear until it balances on the top of theobstruction. Just when the machine movesforward, over and down, stop the machineby releasing steering clutches. Thenengage clutches gradually to start themachine slowly. Never climb in an obliquedirection, nor disengage the steering clutchon one side only.

DRIVING IN DEEP MUD OR WATER

While operating in wet swamp, sharp turnsshould be absolutely avoided. Drive themachine straight as much as possible.

While operating in water, the level ofwater should not be allowed to be abovethe lower side of the carrier rollers.

While the work is in suspension or after ithas been completed, remove mud from thevarious parts of the machine and check theengine oil pan, main clutch case, transmission case, final drive cases for

1. oil leakage and

2. oil level increases

to determine whether there is any water inoil. If necessary, drain a sample of oil forchecking.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS ANDPRECAUTIONS

The essential items of daily care to becarried out faithfully are as follows:

• Inspect the wiring for condition. The wiring should show noindication of chafing, sharpbends, kinks, or other damage.

• Before replacing any electricalcomponent or repairing thecables, be sure to pull out thestarting switch and disconnectearth cable for insuring safety. Also, wrench or any tool shouldbe put on battery.

• Cables, when disconnected atterminals, should be identified andaccounted for as to their locations, sothat they may be put back to theiroriginal positions and in the samecondition as before.

Battery

The cranking performance of the startingdepends much on the conditions of thebattery. For this reason, it is highlyessential that the battery in service belooked after with greater care, particularlyin cold weather.KEEP IN MIND A RUNDOWNBATTERY RESULTS IN HARDENGINE STARTING OR DESTORYTHE CELL PLATES OF THEBATTERY.

82

Maintain the battery in a fully chargedstate at all times. Periodical checks on thebattery for electrolyte level and specificgravity (S.G) must not be neglected.

The electrolyte S.G. chart below serviceas a quick reference in determining thestate of charge.

Under no circumstances, should the batterybe used under 70% charged condition.

Battery terminals and connections should beprevented from corroding by cleaning thecable clamp and terminal post separately, using medium steel wool. After cleaning, clamp them together firmly; then, coat withVaseline. The connections should be keptfree of water and dirt.

Before placing the battery in storage, raisethe electrolyte a little above the normal leveland charge it fully. Select a dry and coolplace to keep the battery in.

Starting circuit

When the key is turned to START position, current from the battery energizes thesolenoid switch, which operates on the drivepinion of the starting motor to mesh with the

flywheel ring gear, thus cranking up theengine. The drive pinion disengages asthe engine starts up normally.

As long as the engine is runningnormally, the starting switch should notbe closed, which will result in thedamage of starter pinion.

The main clutch is of wet type designequipped with a hydraulic booster. Theoil in the main clutch case is deliveredunder pressure by the gear pump to theclutch lining to prevent it fromoverheating at the time of clutchoperation, to the hydraulic booster forsmooth operation of the clutch pedal, andto the various parts which requirelubrication in the system.

ALWAYS KEEP THE OIL IN THECASE WITHIN THE PROPERRANGE.

Insufficient oil or use of an oil of poor qualitywill result in an undue wear on the lining, gear grating, increased operating effort of theclutch pedal, etc.

• In cold weather, when oil temperatureis low, the main clutch will notdisengage smoothly, but this shouldbe of no concern since this conditionmay be corrected as the enginereaches its operating temperature.

UNDER CARRIAGE

Track tension should be neither too tightnor too loose. Too tight a track tensionmay cause undue wear of the track, pins, and bushings. Too loose a track tensionwould increase rolling resistance when aturn is made under travelling conditionand, in the worst case, cause the trackchain to slip out of place. If the two track

chains are unequally tensioned, the tractorwill tend to pull to one side.

89

ADJUSTING TRACK TENSION

Track tension is adjusted properly bymoving the front idler in the fore-and aft-direction as necessary. To increase thetrack tension, remove the cover locatedbeneath the front carrier roller and chargegrease through the grease fitting (1) intothe cylinder. To reduce the track tension, back off the plug (2) one rotation to allowexcess grease to come out of the port. Inthe course of operation over long period, the track pins and bushings graduallywear off, causing the tracks to bestretched out. When the distance “S”, asshown measures 0 mm, renew the trackpins and bushings.

* Never turn the plug (2) more than onerotation. When grease has not beensufficiently drained out in reducing thetrack tension, move the tractor a little

back and forth with the engine running toallow grease to come out easily.

FRONT IDLER ADJUSTMENT

The front idler is used to support the trackchain and to maintain the proper tracktension. It is carried by a yoke designed toallow the idler assembly to traverse back andforth on the track roller frame. The guidepawl (3) prevents the idler from slipping outof the track frame. As wear occurs on theguide pawl, the idler is out of alignment ortrack chain tends to run sidewise. Check theguide pawl now and then for wear and, ifnecessary, adjust as follows: Place the tractoron a level ground. Check the clearance (A)between the track frame (5) and guide pawl(3) four points to see if it is 1 mm at eachpoint. If any point should be in excess of 1mm remove shims (4) until correctadjustment is made. Under no circumstances,

The blade is placed in the RAISE, HOLD,LOWER and FLOAT condition by themovement of the control valve located in thehydraulic tank. When the control valve ismoved to the RAISE position, the bladecylinder piston will retract to allow the bladeto be raised.

When the control valve is moved to theLOWER position, the blade cylinder pistonswill extend to allow the blade to be lowered.

In the HOLD position, blade will be held inits applied position.

If the control valve is moved to the FLOATposition, the blade will be moved freely byexternal force.

Too low a pressure in the system will resultin poor lifting and lowering action of theblade. Too high a pressure in the hydraulicsystem would result in rapid wear or damageto gaskets and rubber hoses.

*ALL SERVICE WORKS ON THEHYDRAULIC SYSTEM SHOULD BEPERFORMED BY THE AUTHORISEDPERSON.

* Use a proper grade of oil.

* When pouring oil into the tank, take care not toallow water and any other foreign particles to getinto the tank. Sludge and rusty chips willprogressively accumulate in the tank, thuscausing damage to tank.

* When hydraulic oil has been changed or whenthe system has been overhauled forreconditioning, bleed air out of the system byextending and retracting the cylinder pistonsseveral times with the engine running at amoderate speed. For air bleeding operation on the hydraulic filterelement, refer to the “1000 HOUR SERVICEOPERATIONS”.
