Where has the year gone? Does time go by faster each year or is it because I am older it appears to slip by more quickly? Which ever it is, 2015 has been a banner of a year for Belmont Village St. Matthews. We have the privilege of having an incredible group of residents, family members and staff to make up our Belmont family. Looking back at 2015, I can recall Bernadette dressed up as a “Jilted Bride" at our recent Halloween party, to the colorful Jockey Silk Jackets made by residents and staff that were displayed during Derby, to seeing Bev DeYoung lead our Mardi Gras Parade in her purple fur jacket playing “When the Saints Go Marching In” on the horn. It all created wonderful memories we carry into the next year with us. We also fondly remember the residents who passed this year and consider the honor we had to be with them and their families during their last days. To say that we, here at Belmont St. Matthews, have the MOST outstanding staff - well it’s a true understatement! Staff who have been with us for now over 16 years—from the PALS and Nurses, Concierges and Drivers, Kitchen Team, Maintenance and Management Team—each person offering their own unique personality to make us the family we are. Please remember to generously donate to our Employee Holiday Fund. Each year we have an Employee Holiday Party where we give all non-management staff members a gift card from YOU—our residents and family members. Last year I was pleased to give out the highest amount that had ever been donated. I trust that this year we will exceed that amount! Please give checks (made out to Belmont Village Employee Holiday Fund) to myself or our Human Resources Coordinator, Lorenda Davis. The deadline for your donation is December 11. Kathryn has exciting events scheduled for this month, and I invite you to join us for any or all of them! The holidays are about family and we encourage you to bring your family members here for some “holly jolly.” My door is always open for you to come and chat! I wish each of you and your loved ones a Blessed Holiday Season and 2016. Ted Burfict, Executive Director

OPERATIONSANTA PAWS

Each year we partner with localagencies to collect donationsduring the holiday season. We’vecollected for our military overseas,to homeless shelters, to familiesin need.

This year we have partneredwith Metro Animal Services. Theyservice an average of 10,000animals each year. Thousands arebrought to their shelters. Theanimal care staff and volunteersspend countless hours caring foranimals at two facilities andsearching for loving, foreverhomes through adoption, foster orrescue programs.

At Belmont Village, we are avidpet lovers! Our CommunityBorder Collie Bella is hosting aSanta Paws Holiday Drive, collecting items beginningNovember 27. A large box islocated in our Great Room. Helpus overflow it!

We are asking for dry pet foods,

pet-friendly cleaning supplies, toys, beds, crates and other goodsfor the Metro Animal Service. Or acheck payable to Louisville MetroAnimal Services.

We anticipate other fundraisingprograms throughout the next fewmonths. Watch for further details. If you have any questions, pleasecontact Kathryn Ray at 721-7500.

Holiday Apartment TourMost of our residents spent

years collecting beautiful holidayitems: ornaments, ceramicfigurines; trees; linens; stockingsand more.

We thought how fun it wouldbe to have a “Holiday ApartmentOpen House and Tour,” whereresidents can showcase theirholiday treasurers.

Since many residents long gavetheir holiday things to familymembers, we are asking familiesto bring in the special pieces thatenhanced the holidays for yourfamily.

On Sunday, December 20,from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. residentswanting to share will open theirdoors to guests.

Visitors will “vote” on theirthree favorite apartments and theresidents and family members ofthose apartments will win a gift.

Watch for more information orcontact Kathryn Ray.

Wendy Smiley, DriverEmployee of the Month

Congratulations to Wendy for VERYdeservedly becoming our newestEmployee of the Month!Wendy as been a Driver, ActivityAssociate and all-around “I’ll tryanything!" employee of BelmontVillage for three years. As a retired manager at theJefferson County School Bussystem, Wendy “retired” and thendecided a “fun part-time job”would be great. She found us andwe found her and the rest is history!Wendy has been heardsaying, “This is like getting paid tovolunteer and have fun.”Not only does Wendy drive asneeded, but she is always lookingfor fun and interesting things forresidents to do. She leads craft-and jewelry-making classes here. She routinely helps out otherManagers and team memberswithout being asked. She evenbrought her pup, Teddy, to be herToto to her Dorothy at ourHalloween party.Wendy has been married “forever”to her best friend, Terry, and has adaughter, Jessica, whom she“plays with” on weekends, eithercanning or making a variety ofcrafts.Wendy wins a $100 gift card andthe coveted Employee of theMonth parking spot (handy in coldweather!). CONGRATS, WENDY!

Belmont Silver BulletsIt’s exciting to see a number of

residents around the building onWednesdays wearing their blueT-shirts with “Belmont VillageSilver Bullets” on them, eager togo bowling in the afternoon.

This team started out with a fewresidents who wanted to gobowling and has grown to a greatgroup who takes up several lanesregularly at Ten Pin Alley!

What is fun is to hear a residentsay, “I can’t bowl. It’s been too long.I’m not able to throw anylonger.” Etc., etc., etc. Then whenWendy and Steve take them, theysee the handicapped lanes set upso that all they need to do is(strategically) aim their ball downa ramp for a strike and become anaddition to our team!

We are near the middle of ourseason and ALWAYS want newresidents to join in the fun. Nocharge, no special shoes

required— and most of the folksbowling use walkers.

As of this month, our topbowlers are Mary Rose Brizendine,Martha Steller, Maggie Bopp andKitty Stephens—not to say thatSidney isn’t always close behindtrying to catch that strike!

Check the calendar for ourbowling dates (usually twice amonth on a Wednesday) andmake the decision to, if not toplay, just come and watch andcheer us on!

Who knows—maybe nextseason we will start competingwith other Senior LivingCommunities!
