Sam Evans and family have agreed to generously donate a Martin House near our fountain. Martins east of the Rocky Mountains are dependent on human-supplied housing. Houston is fast approaching a migratory bird season and we look forward to supplying them with a home. Our entire village will be celebrating Nigeria this month— its customs, dances, songs, food and even its fashion. Each month we will continue to explore new nations of the world and their diverse richness, adding unique recipes to our online cookbook along the way ... always bringing the outside in and exploring boundaries where we can. Last and most important, we have said good-bye to some very special people in our midst. Chuck Mussman, one of the youngest residents in our community, passed away suddenly in June. We will remember his wit, wisdom, kindness and laughter and are better for having known him. RIP sir. In July, Jamaal Tucker, our wonderful driver and activities assistant, decided to pursue a new career path and return to school. We miss him terribly but wish the best for him in his new endeavors. Our spirits are not as light without him. In late August, our amazing Executive Director, Ronnie Shakir, is leaving us to retire and spend more time with his family. He was a fine leader and embraced all that Belmont Village is about. We all learned from him and wish him the best in his new journey. Paula Felton-Werner, our former Executive Director, will be returning to Belmont Village as interim director while we carefully fill that leadership spot. We welcome her home! As always, we are blessed.

Theyhad 3 kids, numerous grand- &great-grandchildren (he lostcount). Sadly, Trudy passedaway after a battle with cancer.

Tom joined the Air Force wherehe learned to fly several fighter jetsand was trained to fly an F80. Heloved flying, but the Korean Warended before he saw active duty.

I hope everyone had a greatsummer! What an amazingOlympics for the United Statesand our residents also enjoyedwatching many of the events.Simone Biles, our localHoustonian, brought home thegold and it was incrediblewatching her compete.

We will be “traveling” as acommunity to Nigeria. Many ofour staff members are Nigerianand we have planned many eventsfor our residents to learn moreabout the culture through theirsenses. They will have theopportunity to taste Nigerianfood, learn Nigerian dances, listento stories about the history andrich culture, take part in makingtheir own traditional wear. One ofour pals, Deborah Adewunmi, is afashion designer and makestraditional Nigerian clothes. Shehopes to help our residents maketheir own traditional clothes andhost a fashion show.

Health

Heart Healthy DietHeart disease is the number

one killer of both men andwomen in the United States. Ifyou are worried about heartdisease, one of the mostimportant things you can do is tostart eating a heart-healthy diet.Changing your diet can help stopor even reverse heart disease.

What foods are part of aheart-healthy diet?

Healthy foods are ones that arehigh in vitamins, minerals, fiberand other nutrients, such as:

Fruits and vegetablesBeans (including chickpeas and

lentils) and whole grains (such aswhole wheat, brown rice, oats, rye, bulgur, barley, quinoa, and corn).

Oily fish like salmon, trout, albacore, tuna, herring, mackerel, and sardines, which containsheart healthy omega-3 fatty acids. You can also get omega-3 fatsfrom omega-3 eggs, walnuts, flaxseeds and canola oil.

Foods to limit are ones that arehigh in:

Unhealthy fats, such assaturated fats, trans fat, andcholesterol.

Trans fats include shortening, partially hydrogenated vegetablesoils and hydrogenated vegetable

oils.Cholesterol is found in animal

products, such as eggs, dairyproducts and meats.

Salt (Sodium). You need somesodium in your diet, but toomuch tends to raise bloodpressure. Try to limit processedfoods and fast foods and eat morefresh foods.

Eating foods that containunhealthy fats can raise the LDL(bad) cholesterol in your blood.Having a high level of LDLcholesterol increases your chanceof having clogged arteries(atherosclerosis) and increasesyour risk of heart attack andstroke.

Trans fat should be avoidedand raises both the level of badcholesterol and lowers the goodcholesterol in the blood.
