Natural Resources• Natural resources are substances we obtain
from the land, water, and air around us.
• People use many of the Earth's natural resources. All of the products we use have a natural resource base.
• Natural resources are either renewable or nonrenewable.
• When we use resources to help us do work or for energy they are called energy resources.
![Page 4: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
NONRENEWABLE RESOURCESA nonrenewable resource is a natural
resource that cannot be re-made or re-grown at a scale comparable to its consumption (rate of use).
Examples: fossil fuels- oil, coal,
natural gas, nuclear energy
![Page 5: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GASCoal, petroleum(oil), and natural gas are
considered nonrenewable
because they can not be replenished in a short period of
time. These are called fossil fuels.
![Page 6: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Fossil Fuels
Coal, Oil and Gas are
called "fossil fuels"
because they have been
formed from the fossilized remains of prehistoric plants and animals.
They provide around 66% of the world's electrical power, and 95% of the world's total energy demands

HOW IS COAL MADE ???
![Page 8: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
HOW ARE OIL AND GAS MADE ???
![Page 9: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Advantages to Using Fossil Fuels• Very large amounts of electricity can be
generated in one place using coal, fairly cheaply.
• Transporting oil and gas to the power stations is easy.
• Gas-fired power stations are very efficient.
• A fossil-fuelled power station can be built almost anywhere.
![Page 10: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Disadvantages of Using Fossil Fuels• The main disadvantage is pollution. • Burning any fossil fuel produces carbon dioxide,
which contributes to the "greenhouse effect", warming the Earth.
• Burning coal produces sulphur dioxide, a gas that contributes to acid rain.
• With the United States importing 55% of its oil, oil spills are a serious problem.
• Mining coal can be difficult and dangerous. Strip mining destroys large areas of the landscape.
![Page 11: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
NUCLEAR ENERGYNuclear fission
uses uranium to create energy.
Nuclear energy is a nonrenewable
resource because once the uranium
is used, it is gone!
![Page 12: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Advantages to Using Nuclear Power• Nuclear power costs about the same as coal,
so it's not expensive to make. • Does not produce smoke or carbon dioxide, so
it does not contribute to the greenhouse effect.
• Produces huge amounts of energy from small amounts of fuel.
• Produces small amounts of waste.
• Nuclear power is reliable.
![Page 13: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Disadvantages of Nuclear Power
• A highly toxic byproduct is produced. Although not much waste is produced, it is very, very dangerous.
• It is difficult to dispose of the waste. It must be sealed up and buried for many years to allow the radioactivity(which can cause cancer) to die away.
• Mining for Uranium destroys
homes and animal habitats.
![Page 14: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Bellringer:• List each type of
nonrenewable energy resource we discussed yesterday. Give an advantage and disadvantage of each.
![Page 15: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
RENEWABLE RESOURCES
Renewable resources are natural resources that can be replenished in a short period of time.
● Solar ● Geothermal● Wind ● Biomass● Water
![Page 16: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
SOLAR ENERGY
Energy from the sun.
![Page 17: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Advantages to solar power• Solar energy is free• produces no waste or pollution• can be used where there is no easy way
to get electricity• Handy for low-power uses such as solar
powered garden lights and battery chargers
![Page 18: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Disadvantages to Solar Power
• Doesn't work at night. • Very expensive to build solar power
stations. • Solar cells cost a great deal compared
to the amount of electricity they produce
• Can be unreliable unless you're in a very sunny climate.
![Page 19: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
WIND ENERGY
Energy from the
wind.
![Page 20: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Advantages to Wind power• Wind is free• Produces no waste or
greenhouse gases. • The land beneath can usually
still be used for farming. • A good method of supplying
energy to remote areas.
![Page 21: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Disadvantages of Wind Power• The wind is not always
predictable• Can kill birds - migrating flocks
tend to like strong winds. Splat! • Can affect television reception if
you live nearby. • Noisy
![Page 22: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
WATER or HYDROELECTRIC ENERGY
Energy from the flow of
water.
![Page 23: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Advantages of Hydroelectricity
• Once the dam is built, the energy is virtually free.
• No waste or pollution produced.• Much more reliable than wind or solar power. • Water can be stored above the dam ready to cope with
peaks in demand.• It forms a lake people can use for recreation.• Hydro-electric power stations can increase to full
power very quickly, unlike other power stations. • Electricity can be generated constantly.
![Page 24: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Disadvantages to Hydro-electricity• The dams are very expensive to build.• Building a large dam will flood a very large area upstream, this destroys animal
habitats. • Only available where there is moving water.• Water quality and quantity downstream can be
affected, which can have an impact on plant life.• It disrupts fish migration patterns.
![Page 25: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
BIOMASS ENERGY
Energy from burning
organic or living matter.
![Page 26: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Advantages to Biomass
• The fuel tends to be cheap.
• Less demand on the Earth's resources.
![Page 27: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
Disadvantages to Using Biomass
• Collecting the waste in
sufficient quantities can be
difficult.
• We burn the fuel, so
it makes greenhouse gases.
• Some waste materials are not available all year round.
![Page 28: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
Energy from Earth’s heat.
![Page 29: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
Advantages to Geothermal Power
• Does not produce any pollution.• The power stations do not take up much room, so there is not much impact on the environment.• Once you've built a geothermal power station, the
energy is almost free.
![Page 30: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
Disadvantages to Geothermal Power
• There are not many places where you can build a geothermal power station. (You need hot rocks of a suitable type, at a depth where we can drill down to them. The type of rock above is also important, it must be of a type that we can easily drill through. )
• Sometimes a geothermal site may "run out of steam", perhaps for decades.
• Hazardous gases and minerals may come up from underground, and can be difficult to safely dispose of.
![Page 31: Bellringer Classify each resource as renewable or nonrenewable: Oil Coal Trees Natural Gas Wind Solar Energy Geothermal energy Biomass Propane Nuclear.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032523/56649d875503460f94a6bdd5/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
