Nacida y educada en Washington D.C., Ruth Drayer ha vivido en varias ciudades americanas y ha viajado por todas partes del mundo. Planeando trabajar con Svetoslav Roerich en el restablecimiento de Urusvati, el Instituto de Investigación creado por Helena y Nicolás Roerich antes de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, se trasladó a India en 1986. Cuando los
proyectos para este fin cambiaron, ella volvió a Estados Unidos y comenzó quince años de investigación y escritura de la biografía de los Roerich, Fruto de ello se escribió “Nicolás y Helena Roerich, el Viaje Espiritual de Dos Grandes Artistas y Pacificadores”. Mientras escribía, su amor por el color crecía hasta que necesitó hacer algo con los colores que llenara sus sueños. Habiendo estudiado anteriormente nociones de diseño interior, terapia y curación por el color, se dedicó entonces a la pintura.
Considera a Roerich su mentor y a Kandinsky y Monet sus otras influencias. Más que objetos o sitios reconocibles, su tema es el color y ella ha desarrollado su propia técnica. Antes de comenzar a pintar, cubre el lienzo vacío con un compuesto que añadirá profundidad y textura al trabajo. Entonces ella puede pintar un símbolo sagrado o una palabra como "amor" y luego ocultarlo. Añade capas con el color hasta

que siente el trabajo completo y armonioso. Ruth trabaja con
pinturas acrílicas porque secan rápidamente y le permiten
añadir capas. Ella dice, “Después de años de escritura y
reescritura sobre mi libro, me parece natural solamente pintar y
repintar. Pienso que la escritura y la pintura son muy similares;
ambas son comunicativas, sin embargo los colores hablan una
lengua sin palabras. A veces parece que mi trabajo susurra y
otras veces habla claro y vigorosamente. El arte es una
experiencia personal, y si a un espectador le gusta una obra o
le disgusta, es completamente individual. La gente trata de
entender lo que yo pienso o lo que trato de comunicar. Pero mi
trabajo viene de tan profundamente dentro de mí que
realmente no se lo puedo decir. Prefiero que ellos usen su
imaginación y si la obra parece calmante, curativa y meditativa,
que disfruten al observarla, que es lo que importa.”
Su trabajo ha sido expuesto en galerías y exposiciones
en Santa Fe, Nuevo México y otras ciudades americanas.
Sus pinturas están en colecciones privadas por todas
partes de Estados Unidos, Canadá, México y España. Un
crítico escribió, “Las pinturas de la Sra. Drayer reflejan su
búsqueda de toda la vida del conocimiento espiritual. Ellas
proporcionan orden, armonía y sensaciones hermosas por
sus relaciones. Cada pintura es el resultado de un viaje
usando el idioma de la forma, el color y el diseño.” Ruth
comparte el amor de Nicolás Roerich por el color y su
creencia de que si la gente fuera educada sobre la
importancia de la Belleza, podría llevar a la paz mundial.

En 1946, el Círculo de Arte y Cultura de la Juventud
de Bombay, India, publicó un pequeño volumen escrito por
el artista ruso Nicolás K. Roerich titulado Beautiful Unity.
Publicado en 1946, podría haber sido escrito anteriormente.
Por lo tanto, para colocar este libro en el contexto de los
tiempos, diré que el Profesor Roerich tenía 72 años; era un
año antes de su muerte en 1947. Él y su querida esposa
Helena Roerich, vivían en Kulu, India, con el amplio
Himalaya al otro lado de su ventana.
Su Expedición por el Asia Central finalizó en 1928 y
él y su hijo George habían vuelto de la segunda expedición
en el Gobi en 1937. La Segunda Guerra Mundial había
terminado en 1945. Europa estaba en ruinas. La India tan
amada de Roerich estaba en confusión. Mahatma Gandhi
estaba en la cárcel por predicar la no-violencia. La querida
patria de Roerich, la Unión Soviética, estaba en severo
conflicto con los Aliados y Berlín se convirtió pronto en un
lugar caliente para una guerra fría. El profesor Roerich y su
hijo más joven Svetoslav (también artista), organizaron

exposiciones y la venta de pinturas enviando los beneficios
a la Cruz Roja en el frente ruso. En el esfuerzo de
conservar la cultura lejos del mundo de la destrucción,
Roerich trabajó para establecer la Asociación Cultural
Ruso-Americana e informar a la gente sobre los objetivos
del Pacto Roerich de la Paz y de la Bandera de la Paz y la
Cultura.
Él concibió la idea de conservar los logros artísticos
y científicos del mundo a comienzos de 1904 y lo propuso a
la Sociedad Rusa de Arquitectos. Pero ahora, 40 años y
dos Guerras Mundiales más tarde, después de todo lo
destruido en Europa, de nuevo reunió a la gente con la
necesidad de manifestar que: “El cuidado del arte y el
conocimiento a una escala planetaria es nuestro deber
universal. Los tesoros de belleza pertenecen al mundo.”
Luego escribiría: “Hemos introducido la Bandera de
la Paz como la Cruz Roja de la Cultura para proteger los
verdaderos tesoros de la humanidad. Estos tesoros
pertenecen al mundo. El cuidado por el arte y el
conocimiento es un deber universal a escala planetaria.” Si
alguien posee un recipiente que contenga una solución de
trabajo por un mundo saludable, con qué cuidado debería
ser guardado ese tesoro. Sin embargo, la Cultura, la
Belleza y la Ciencia son la misma fórmula milagrosa y
como tal deben exigir vigilante devoción. Así como la gente
se preocupa por su salud, la solución de la belleza debe
ser protegida y venerada. “Un día hará época cuando la
Bandera de la Paz y de la Cultura sea desplegada ante
nosotros por todos los países y todos los centros
espirituales, de la belleza y del conocimiento. Esta señal

llamará a todos a venerar y a valorar los tesoros de la
grandeza humana.”
La cultura era sagrada para Roerich. No se trataba
de refinamiento personal o gracia social, o excelencia
intelectual; significaba una vida de intensa creatividad en
el frente espiritual con el propósito de adelantar una
manera más luminosa y fructífera para el establecimiento
de una paz permanente en la Tierra. Lo que representaba
la suma de las capacidades creativas humanas que se
encuentran en la expresión de la triada divina: belleza,
verdad y bondad.
“Allí donde hay cultura, hay paz. Allí donde hay paz,
hay cultura. Allí donde no son difíciles los problemas
sociales, es un logro. La cultura es la culminación de la
Dicha más alta, de la Belleza más alta, del Conocimiento
más alto.”
“Nuestros tiempos son difíciles debido a la falta de
entendimiento y a todos los ataques de la oscuridad contra
la luz. Pero quizás esta terrible tensión sea el impulso para
dirigir a la humanidad a través de todas las tormentas y
todos los abismos hacia la construcción pacífica y el
respeto mutuo. De ahí lo necesario del respeto a la cultura
y a tener una nueva valoración del trabajo como única
medida de los valores verdaderos”.
Él escribió: “Hoy en día nos estamos esforzando
hacia la próxima evolución. Estamos tratando de descartar
las viejas formas y crear algo nuevo. Sin embargo, con el
fin de lograr la mejora real de la vida, debemos honrar a lo
antiguo. De la agitación y los conflictos del ayer, surgirá un
nuevo camino de belleza y conocimiento. La Gran Belleza

surgirá finalmente tras terremotos, inundaciones, y los
cataclismos más grandes, e igualmente se dará tras
cualquier otro conflicto mundial. Tened buen ánimo. En
medio de las ruinas de las convenciones humanas, ya
surge una nueva vida… en la que el arte y el conocimiento
apoyarán el trono del Amor Divino. Sólo la Cultura y la Paz
hacen a los seres humanos invencibles, y realizando todas
las condiciones espirituales se volverán tolerantes y
comprensivos.”
“Imaginemos la historia de humanidad sin el tesoro
de la belleza. Veríamos entonces fácilmente que las
épocas se sucedieron sin sentido. Desalmados, sin una
manifestación del espíritu de la Belleza, permaneceríamos
entre la fealdad de la muerte. Y cuando proclamamos que
la belleza y el arte son vida, hablamos de la evolución
próxima de la belleza. Todo lo llevado a cabo para el arte
es un logro para la evolución. Cada compañero de trabajo
en este campo es ya un héroe o heroína.”
“¡Hermanas! Intrépidamente permaneced en
guardia para mejorar la vida. Encended en cada hogar un
fuego hermoso, creativo e inspirador. Hablad sobre la
belleza a los niños. Enseñadles la jerarquía sagrada del
conocimiento. Relacionadlos con la creatividad. Guardadlos
de la disolución e infundid en ellos los conceptos de
heroísmo y logro. Enseñad a los pequeños la primacía de
los valores culturales y pronunciad la palabra sagrada
Cultura. Grande y hermoso es el trabajo ordenado para
vosotras.”
Los regalos del arte y de la belleza son eternos y
profundamente elevados. El color es uno de los modos
con que es elevado el conocimiento. Artistas han sido el

chamán, los sacerdotes y sanadores a lo largo del tiempo.
En el artículo titulado, La Misión de las Mujeres, (incluido
en El Pacto Roerich, la Bandera de la Paz, la Cruz Roja de
la Cultura. Biblioteca Nuevo Mundo. I.M.H. Press, Delhi,
1939) Roerich escribió: “Desde el más antiguo de los días,
la mujer ha llevado una corona sobre su cabeza. Con esta
corona se dice que ella ha pronunciado el conjuro más
sagrado. ¿No es la corona de la Unidad? ¿Y no es esto la
responsabilidad más alta y la misión más hermosa de las
mujeres? De la mujer, uno debe aprender que debemos
buscar el desarme pero no en los equipos de guerra ni las
propias armas bélicas, sino en nuestras propias mentes
y espíritus. Cuando llega la hora de grandes conflictos y
ataques de necesidad extrema, la mujer estará de pie y
levantará su mano para la salvación del mundo. Y rodeada
por todos los torbellinos y toda la luz, ella se levantará
como un pilar del espacio, convocando todas las fuerzas de
los mundos lejanos.”
“Las imágenes de la Madre del Mundo, de la Madonna,
la Madre Kali, la benévola Dukkar, Ishtar, Kuan-Yin, Miriam,
Tara Blanca, todas estas grandes imágenes, todos estos
grandes seres llenos de abnegación se combinan juntos en
una concepción, como una Unidad benévola.”
“Entre los horrores, en medio de las luchas y
enfrentamientos de los pueblos, la cuestión del conocimiento y
la cuestión del arte son asuntos de primera importancia.
Ellos son el único camino para la Paz. La humanidad ha
tratado de apoderarse de tesoros que no ha merecido, por
lo que se ha rasgado el velo de la diosa de la felicidad.”
“El camino del rencor, la aspereza y el abuso no nos
conducirá a ninguna parte. Fuera la oscuridad, fuera la

maldad y la traición. La humanidad ya se ha resentido
bastante con ellas. Las únicas bases de la vida son el arte
y el conocimiento.”
“Entre ruinas de billetes de banco sin valor y la
revalorización de valores, la humanidad realiza que ningún
acontecimiento es casual. Sabiendo que el tiempo para la
construcción de la futura cultura está a mano, la humanidad
afronta los acontecimientos próximos de la grandeza
cósmica. La vida moderna está llena de tentaciones
inadecuadas que atrapan al cuerpo físico. Rozamos la
línea terrible de salida del círculo mágico protector y el
único modo de ahuyentar a sus guardianes oscuros y
escaparse de ello es mediante el talismán del conocimiento
verdadero y de la belleza. El tiempo luminoso se acerca
cuando éste se vuelve una necesidad.”
“La Historia de la Humanidad ofrece innumerables
ejemplos del Arte como el gran Faro de Luz en tiempos de
calamidades. Los científicos afirman que el color y el
sonido son una panacea. Por la Belleza y la Armonía,
incluso las bestias salvajes fueron domadas. La necesidad
de cultura es sobre todo necesaria en tiempos de guerra y
malentendidos.”
“Las artes son una. La gran síntesis. ¿Cuál es el
espíritu creativo que está inherente en todo el arte? ¿Un
aliento de los éteres más sutiles de los mundos que
existieron antes y los que existieron después? Música,
pintura, escultura, poesía, teatro y danza, en esencia son
uno. Todos ellos son la primavera del mismo espíritu
ampliamente creativo. Ellos forman la flor de vida. Su casa
es lo eterno e interminable.”

Roerich creyó que “Para estar en armonía con la
frecuencia creciente de la vibración de la vida, debemos
hacer uso de las rápidas alas voladoras de la imaginación.
En nuestro esfuerzo para unir los mundos internos con los
mundos externos, descubrimos de nuevo el principio de
unidad como relación con toda vida. Ya que la base de la
cultura verdadera está en la percepción no sólo de la
unidad de las artes, sino de la unidad entre arte y vida.
Visto como uno, ellos se convierten en una fuente
inagotable de belleza.”
“El artista es el sacerdote de la belleza. Es él quien
rescata la verdad de la fealdad y nos alimenta entre el
estrés y la tensión de la vida. Como granos de arena, la
belleza es dispersada por todas partes del universo.”
“A través de la historia, expresada de modos
múltiples, hay muchos ejemplos convincentes de personas
que se dedicaron a la Belleza: ya sea combinando la
pintura con la arquitectura, la escultura, los mosaicos o las
artes gráficas. A lo largo del tiempo, las vidas de los artistas
han sido difíciles. Leonardo en Florencia o Miguel Ángel en
Roma experimentaron grandes dificultades. Nadie pensará
que las vidas de Rembrandt o Rubens fueron fáciles. Sin
embargo el tiempo embellece todos los sufrimientos por
bienaventuranza épica y calma. ¡Cuántas tragedias siguen
ocultas detrás de las maravillosas cortinas del Tiempo!”
“Y los mártires de la ciencia como Copérnico,
Galileo, Paracelso y otros innumerables que sufrieron por
la verdad, sin embargo, una vez que sabemos que los
artistas son los sacerdotes de la Belleza, nosotros también
sabemos que el logro de todos los demás atributos es
inevitable.”

“Los tres remedios básicos contra la enfermedad
humana son el color, el sonido y la fragancia. Sin embargo,
el color no se refiere simplemente para pintar, tampoco la
música debería ser entendida como la educación musical
rutinaria en su sentido estricto.” Roerich usó la música en el
sentido más amplio de uno de los mayores conceptos de
nuestra existencia. La educación de la música es la más
importante; Ritmo y Armonía están profundamente arraigados
en el alma, la dominan, la llenan de belleza y transforman
al hombre en un pensador hermoso. “En Atenas, como
servicio a las Musas, el concepto abarcaba no sólo a la
armonía de sonido, sino a todo el campo de la poesía, las
altas percepciones, las formas exquisitas y la creación en
general.”
“Cada bibliotecario es un amigo del artista y
científico. El bibliotecario es el primer mensajero de Belleza
y Conocimiento. Aquél que abre las puertas de los estantes
muertos y extrae la palabra escondida para iluminar la
mente penetrante. Ningún catálogo puede sustituir a un
bibliotecario. Una palabra de cariño y la mano experimentada
pueden producir el milagro de iluminación. Pero la
verdadera iluminación del conocimiento viene en la hora de
silencio y soledad cuando concentramos todas nuestras
inteligencias hacia la verdad.”
“La verdadera paz, la verdadera unidad es deseada
por el corazón humano. Él se esfuerza para trabajar
creativa y activamente para que su trabajo sea una fuente
de felicidad. Él quiere amar y ampliarse en la realización de
la Belleza Sublime. En la percepción más alta de Belleza y
Conocimiento todas las divisiones convencionales desaparecen.
El corazón habla con su propio lenguaje; quiere alegrarse

de lo que es común para todos, lo que eleva a todos, y lo
que lleva al futuro radiante. Todos los símbolos de la
humanidad contienen un jeroglífico, la oración sagrada:
Paz y Unidad.”
“Los valores del gran arte cruzan victoriosamente
todas las tormentas de conmociones terrenales. Y cuando
proclamamos el amor, la belleza y la acción, sabemos que
pronunciamos la fórmula del lenguaje Internacional. Y esta
fórmula que perteneció al museo y al arte, entra en nuestra
vida diaria. La señal de la belleza abrirá todas las puertas
sagradas. Bajo la señal de la belleza nos llenamos de júbilo.
Con la belleza triunfamos. Por la belleza oramos. En la
belleza estamos unidos. Realizando el camino de la realidad
verdadera, afirmamos estas palabras entre la confusión de
la ciudad y saludamos el futuro con una sonrisa feliz.”
“La gente reza en momentos de gran dificultad. Así
también, es la oración del espíritu la más necesaria cuando
la totalidad del ser es afectada y necesita ayuda, y cuando
busca una sabia solución. ¿Y en dónde se encuentra un
mayor apoyo? La oración hace que el espíritu brille con
más intensidad. Podéis decir: la Vida es difícil. ¿Cómo
podemos pensar en el conocimiento y la belleza sino para
vivir? A esto digo: Tenéis razón pero también estáis
equivocados. El conocimiento y el arte no son lujos, ni
ociosidad. Son oración y trabajo del espíritu.”
“¿De qué habla la gran sabiduría de todas las épocas
y naciones? Habla del espíritu humano. No sabéis los límites
del poder del espíritu. No sabéis sobre qué obstáculos
infranqueables aguanta vuestro espíritu, pero algún día
deberéis despertar, ilesos y eternamente regenerados.
Y cuando la vida es dura y difícil, cuando parece que no hay

ninguna salida, ¿no sentís que algún ayudante, vuestro
propio espíritu divino se apresura en vuestra ayuda? En la
belleza del arte y la profundidad del conocimiento está
contenido el encanto victorioso del espíritu.”
“¡Más conocimiento! ¡Más arte! No hay suficiente de
estos fundamentos en la vida que pueden llevarnos a la
edad de oro de la Unidad. Sólo en la fundación de la
verdadera belleza y el verdadero conocimiento puede ser
conseguido un entendimiento sincero entre naciones. Y el
verdadero guía será la lengua universal del conocimiento y
la belleza del arte.”
“La vida contemporánea cambia rápidamente, las
señales de la nueva evolución llaman a todas las puertas.
En la verdadera ciencia poco convencional sentimos la
responsabilidad espléndida de las generaciones próximas.
Gradualmente, entendemos el daño de todo lo negativo.
Nos preparamos para las siguientes generaciones valorando
lo positivo y constructivo.”
En lugar de sonar anticuado y pasado de moda, la
mayor parte de lo que Roerich escribió hace unos años suena
como si él lo escribiera hoy. Él permanece como visionario,
señalando nuestro camino hacia un futuro posible. El mensaje
de Roerich de unidad: la Gran Síntesis, es más relevante en
nuestros tiempos que nunca anteriormente. A través de las
puertas abiertas y las ventanas del mundo virtual nuestras
oportunidades de conexión son ilimitadas. Todos somos parte
de la Gran Síntesis.
Nicolás Roerich habría estado satisfecho y
profundamente emocionado al saber que la Convención de
La Haya de 1954 había adoptado el Pacto Roerich. La Bandera

fue izada en los picos más altos del planeta, en los polos
Norte y Sur. En 1990 fue elevada al espacio cósmico sobre
la Tierra en la estación orbital “Mir”, donde permaneció
durante 10 días, y luego se llevó una segunda vez mientras
muchos equipos internacionales trabajaban allí en 1997.
Fue aún llevada una vez más cuando el Transbordador
espacial de EE.UU. se unió a la "Mir". El astronauta de
EE. UU Michael Foale dijo: “Llevamos esta Bandera de la
Paz al Cosmos para recordar una vez más a toda la gente
acerca de nuestra responsabilidad universal por el destino
de la humanidad y del planeta... Los vuelos del hombre al
Cosmos son los primeros pasos hacia la cultura universal,
cuyo símbolo es la Bandera de la Paz.”
En 1999 la Bandera de la Paz fue presentada al
Secretario general de las Naciones Unidas Kofi Annan y en
2004 al representante del Parlamento Indio S. Chatterji, que
dijo que sería guardada como el tesoro más preciado en el
Parlamento de India. En 2007 la Asamblea del Báltico adoptó
el Pacto y declaró el 15 de abril como el Día de la Cultura en
los tres países del Báltico: Lituania, Letonia y Estonia.
Alrededor del mundo, artistas de todos los campos
trabajan juntos a diario en el cine, la música, la danza, la
escultura, la pintura, en el escenario y fuera de éste,
trayendo su singularidad y contribuyéndolo a la totalidad. A
través de las facilidades dadas por las comunicaciones, las
comunidades del mundo están siendo formadas en todos
los ámbitos de la vida. Con tanto acontecimiento bueno, es
fácil reconocer “el daño que produce todo lo que es
negativo.” Las palabras de Roerich son más verdad ahora
que nunca, y él nos habla a través de los años cuando dice
que “Nos preparamos para las siguientes generaciones
valorando lo positivo y lo constructivo.”

Se hará época algún día cuando ante nosotros la
Bandera de Paz sea desplegada en todos los países, todos
los centros espirituales, de belleza y de conocimiento. Este
signo llamará a cada uno para reverenciar y valorar los
tesoros de la grandeza humana. Sin embargo, se hará
época algún día también cuando la Bandera de la Paz y de
la Cultura sea desplegada en nuestros corazones,
llamándonos para reverenciar y valorar los tesoros de la
grandeza humana y de la gente que los produjo también.

Born and raised in Washington, D.C. Ruth Drayer has lived in several American cities and traveled throughout much of the world. Planning to work with Svetoslav Roerich in the reestablishment of Urusvati, the Research Institute started by Helena & Nicholas Roerich before World War II, she moved to India in 1986, When the plans for that changed, she returned to the
United States and began the fifteen years of researching and writing the Roerichs' biography. Like result is written: “Nicholas & Helena Roerich, The Spiritual Journey of Two Great Artists & Peacemakers”. While writing, her love of color was growing until she needed to do something with the colors filling her dreams. Having previously studied principles of interior design, color therapy and healing, she turned to painting.
She considers Roerich her mentor and Kandinsky and Monet her other influences. Rather than objects or recognizable places, her subject matter is color and she has developed her own technique. Before beginning to paint, she covers the empty canvas with a compound that will add depth and texture to the work. Then she may paint in a sacred symbol or a word like “love” and then conceal it.
She layers on color until the work feels complete and

harmonious. Ruth works in acrylics because they dry
quickly and allow her to build up layers. She says, “After
years of writing and rewriting my book, it just seems natural
to paint and repaint. I think writing and painting are very
similar; both are about communicating however, colors
speak a language without words. Sometimes my work
seems to whisper and other times it speaks out boldly. Art is
a such a personal experience, and whether a viewer likes a
piece or dislikes it, is completely individual. People try to
understand what I was thinking or what I'm trying to
communicate. But my work comes from so deep inside me
that I really can't tell them. I'd rather they use their
imagination and if the piece seems soothing, healing and
meditative, and they enjoy looking at it, that is all that is
important.”
Her work has been shown in galleries and
exhibitions in Santa Fe, New Mexico and other American
cities and her paintings are in private collections throughout
the United States, in Canada, Mexico and Spain. A critic
wrote, “Drayer's paintings reflect her lifelong quest for
spiritual knowledge. They produce order, harmony and
beautiful sensations by their relationships. Each painting is
the result of a journey using the language of form, color and
design.” Ruth shares Nicholas Roerich's love of color and
his belief that if people were educated to the importance of
Beauty, it could lead to world peace.

Nicholas Roerich’s Vision
for the Future
In 1946, the Youth's Art and Culture Circle of
Bombay, India, published a slim volume written by the
Russian artist Nicholas K. Roerich titled Beautiful Unity. To
have been published in 1946, it would have had to been
written earlier. Therefore, to place this book in the context of
the times, Professor Roerich was 72 years old; it was one
year before his death in 1947. He and his dear wife Helena
Roerich, were living in Kulu Vally, India, with the Himalayan
Range just outside their window.
Their Central Asian Expedition had been completed
in 1928 and he and his son George had returned from the
second expedition into the Gobi in 1937. World War II had
ended in 1945. Europe was in ruins. Roerich's much loved
India was in turmoil. Mahatma Gandhi was being thrown in
jail for preaching non-violence. Roerich's dear motherland,
the Soviet Union, was in severe conflict with the Allies and
Berlin was soon to become a cold war hot spot. Professor
Roerich and his younger son Svetoslav, (also an artist)
arranged exhibitions and sold paintings and sent the profits

to the Red Cross on the Russian front. In effort to preserve
the world's culture from further destruction, Roerich worked
to establish the American-Russian Cultural Association and
to acquaint people with the goals of the Roerich Pact of
Peace and the Banner of Peace and Culture.
He had conceived the idea of preserving the world's
artistic and scientific achievements originally in 1904 and
proposed it to the Russian Society of Architects. But now 40
years and two World Wars later, after so much had been
destroyed in Europe, he again rallied people with the
necessity, saying: “The care for art and knowledge on a
planetary scale is our universal duty. The treasures of
beauty belong to the world.”
“We introduced the Banner of Peace as a Red
Cross of Culture to protect the real treasures of humanity”,
he wrote. “These treasures belong to the world. The care
for art and knowledge is an universal duty on a planetary
scale. If anyone possessed a receptacle containing a
working solution for a healthy world, how carefully would he
guard that treasure. But Culture, Beauty and Science are
that same miracle-working formula and as such should
require vigilant devotion. Just as people worry about their
health, the solution of beauty needs to be guarded and
venerated. What an epoch-making day might be before us
when the Banner of Peace and Culture will be unfurled over
all countries, all centers of spirit, beauty and knowledge.
This sign will call everyone to revere and value the
treasures of human greatness.”
Culture was sacred to Roerich. Not about personal
refinement or social grace or intellectual excellence, it
meant a life of intensive creativeness on the spiritual front

for the purpose of bringing forward a more luminous and
fruitful way for the establishment of permanent peace on
earth. It stood for the sum total of human creative abilities
as found in the expression of the divine triad: beauty, truth
and goodness.
“There where there is culture, is peace. There where
there is peace, is culture. There where there are difficult
social problems, is achievement. Culture is the culmination
of highest Bliss, of highest Beauty, of highest knowledge.”
“Our times are difficult because of all of the non-
understanding and all attacks of darkness against Light.
But perhaps this terrible tension is the impulse to direct
humanity through all storms and over all abysses to
peaceful construction and mutual respect. What an
epoch-making day may be before us when the one
Banner of Peace and Culture will be unfurled over all
countries, all centers of spirit, beauty and knowledge.
This sign would call everyone to revere the treasures of
human genius, respect culture and to have a new
valuation of labor as the only measure of true values.”
He wrote: “Today we are striving toward the next
evolution. We are trying to discard old forms and create
something new. But in order to attain the true enhancement
of life we must honor the old. From the heaving and
conflicts of the old yesterdays, a new path of beauty and
wisdom shall come. Great beauty eventually follows
earthquakes and floods, and the greatest cataclysms, so
too will it follow this world conflict. Be of good cheer. Amidst
the ruins of human conventions, a new life already arises...
one in which art and knowledge will support the throne of
Divine Love. Only Culture and Peace make humans

invincible and realizing all spiritual conditions they become
tolerant and all-embracing.”
“Let us imagine the history of humanity without the
treasure of beauty. We would then readily realize that the
epochs felt meaningless. Soul-less. Without a manifestation
of the spirit of the Beautiful, we shall remain amid the
ugliness of death. And when we proclaim that beauty, and
art are life, we speak of the coming evolution of beauty.
Everything accomplished for art is an attainment for
evolution. Every co-worker in the field is already a hero or
heroine.”
“Sisters! Fearlessly stand on guard for the
improvement of life. Kindle at each hearth a beautiful fire,
creative and inspiring. Speak the first word about beauty to
the children. Teach them about the blessed hierarchy of
knowledge. Relate to them about creativeness. Guard them
from dissolution and instill in them the concepts of heroism
and achievement. Teach the little ones about the primacy of
cultural values and pronounce the sacred word Culture.
Great and beautiful is the work ordained for you.”
The gifts of art and beauty are timeless and deeply
uplifting. Color is one of the ways consciousness is raised.
Artists have been the shamen, priests and healers
throughout time. In the article titled, Mission of Womanhood,
(included in Roerich Pact, Peace Banner, The Red Cross of
Culture. New World Library. I.M.H. Press, Delhi, 1939)
Roerich wrote, “From the most ancient of days, woman has
worn a wreath upon her head. With this wreath she is said to
have pronounced the most sacred incantation. Is it not the
wreath of Unity? And is this not the highest responsibility and
the most beautiful mission of womanhood? From woman,

one may learn that we must seek disarmament not in
warships and guns but in our spirits. When the hour of
extreme need strikes, woman will stand and lift up her hand
for the salvation of the world. And encircled by all whirlwinds
and all light, she will rise like a pillar of space, summoning all
the forces of the far-off worlds.”
“The images of the Mother of the World, of the
Madonna, the Mother Kali, the benevolent Dukkar, Ishtar,
Kwan-Yin, Miriam, the White Tara, all these great images,
all these great self-sacrificing beings merge together in one
conception, as one benevolent Unity.”
“Amongst the horrors, in the midst of the struggles
and the collisions of the people, the question of knowledge
and the question of art are matters of the first importance.
They are the only road to Peace. Humanity has tried to lay
hold of treasures which it has not deserved and so has torn
the benevolent veil of the goddess of happiness.”
“The path of animosity, roughness and abuse will
lead us nowhere. Away with darkness, away with malice
and treachery. Mankind has already felt enough of them.
The only bases of life are art and knowledge.”
“Amidst ruins of valueless banknotes and the
revaluation of values, mankind is realizing that no
occurrence is accidental. Knowing that the time for the
construction of future culture is at hand, humanity is facing
the coming events of cosmic greatness. Modern life is filled
with the animal demands of the body. We come near to the
line of the terrible magic circle and the only way of conjuring
its dark guardians and escaping from it is through the

talisman of true knowledge and beauty. The time is at hand
when this will be a necessity.”
“The History of Humanity gives innumerable examples
of Art being the great Beacon of Light in times of calamity.
Scientists assert that colour and sound are a panacea. By
Beauty and Harmony, even wild beasts were tamed. The
need of culture is especially felt in times of war and
misunderstandings.”
“The arts are one. The great synthesis. What is the
creative spirit that inheres in all art but a breath from the
finer ethers of 'worlds before and after?' Music, painting,
sculpture, poetry, the drama and dance; in essence, these
are one. They all spring from the same broadly creative
spirit. They form the flower of life. Their home is the
timeless and endless.”
Roerich believed that “To be in harmony with the
increasing rate of life-vibration, we must make use of the
fast flying wings of imagination. In our effort to join the
worlds within with the worlds without, we are re-discovering
the principle of unity as relating to all life. For the basis of
true culture lies in the perception of not only unity of the
arts, but of unity between art and living. Seen as one, they
become an inexhaustible fountain of beauty.”
“The artist is the priest of the beautiful. It is he who
rescues the truth from ugliness and nourishes us amidst the
fret and stress of life. Like grains of sand, the beautiful is
scattered throughout the universe.”
“Throughout history, expressed in a multitude of
ways, there are many convincing examples of people who

devoted themselves to Beauty: combining painting with
architecture or sculpture or mosaics or the graphic arts.
Throughout time, artists lives have been difficult. Leonardo
in Florence or Michaelangelo in Rome experienced great
hardships. No one will think the lives of Rembrandt or
Rubens were easy. However time adorns all sufferings with
epic beatitude and calm. Yet how many tragedies remain
hidden behind the gorgeously brocaded curtains of Time.”
“And the martyrs of science like Copernicus, Galileo,
Paracelsus and innumerable other sufferers for truth
however, once we know that artists are the priests of the
Beautiful, we also know that the attainment of all other
attributes is inevitable.”
“The three basic remedies against human disease
are colour, sound and fragrance. However, color does not
merely refer to paint, nor should music be understood as
routine musical education in its narrow sense.” Roerich
used music in the broader sense of one of the greatest
concepts of our existence. Education of music is most
important; Rhythm and Harmony are deeply rooted into the
soul, dominate it, fill it with beauty and transform man into a
beautiful thinker. “In Athens, as service to the Muses, the
conception embraced not only the harmony of sound, but
the whole domain of poetry, high perceptions, exquisite
forms and creation in general.”
“Every librarian is a friend of the artist and scientist.
The librarians is the first messenger of Beauty and
Knowledge. The one who opens the gates from the dead
shelves and extracts the hidden word to enlighten the
searching mind. Not one catalog can replace a librarian. A
loving word and experienced hand may produce the miracle

of enlightenment. But the true upliftment of knowledge
comes in the hour of silence and solitude when we
concentrate all of our intelligences towards the truth.”
“Real peace, real unity is desired by the human
heart. It strives to labor creatively and actively for its labor is
a source of joy. It wants to love and expand in the
realization of Sublime Beauty. In the highest perception of
Beauty and Knowledge all conventional divisions disappear.
The heart speaks its own language; it wants to rejoice that
which is common for all, uplifts all, and leads to the radiant
future. All symbols and tablets of humanity contain one
hieroglyph, the sacred prayer – Peace and Unity.”
“The values of great art are victoriously traversing
all storms of earthly commotions. And when we proclaim
love, beauty and action, we know that we pronounce the
formula of the International language. And this formula
which belonged to the museum and stage is entering our
everyday life. The sign of beauty will open all sacred gates.
Beneath the sign of beauty we walk joyfully. With beauty we
conquer. Through beauty we pray. In beauty we are united.
Realizing the path of true reality, we affirm these words
amidst the turmoil of the city and we greet the future with a
happy smile.”
“People pray in moments of great difficulty. So too,
is the prayer of the spirit most needed when one's whole
being is shaken and in need of support and when it seeks
for a wise solution. And wherein lies a stronger support?
Prayer makes the spirit shine more brightly. You may say:
Life is hard. How can we think of knowledge and beauty if
we nothing to live on? To this I say: You are right but you

are also wrong. Knowledge and art are not luxuries nor
idleness. They are prayer and the work of the spirit.”
“Of what does the great wisdom of all ages and
nations speak? It speaks of the human spirit. You know not
the limits to the power of the spirit. You do not know over
what impassable obstacles your spirit bears you, but some
day you shall awake, unharmed and everlastingly regenerated.
And when life is hard and weary, there seems to be no way
out, do you not feel that some helper, your own divine spirit
is speeding to your aid? In the beauty of art and the depth
of knowledge are contained the victorious enchantment of
the spirit.”
“More knowledge! More art! There are not enough of
these basics in life which can lead us to the golden age of
Unity. Only on the foundation of true beauty and true
knowledge can a sincere understanding between nations
be achieved. And the real guide will be the universal
language of knowledge and the beauty of art.”
“Contemporary life is rapidly changing, the signs of
the new evolution are knocking all doors. In real
unconventional science we feel the splendid responsibility
for the coming generations. Gradually, we understand the
harm of everything negative. We prepare for the next
generations by valuing enlightened positiveness and
constructiveness.”
Rather than sounding old-fashioned and out of date,
much of what Roerich wrote years ago sounds as if he were
writing it today. He remains the visionary, pointing our way
towards a possible future. Roerich's message of unity: the
Great Synthesis, is more relevant in our times than in any

previously. Through the open doors and windows of the
virtual world our opportunities for connection are unlimited.
We are all part of the Great Synthesis.
Nicholas Roerich would have been gratified and
deeply moved to know that the Hague Convention of 1954
had adopted the Roerich Pact. The Banner was flown on
the top peaks of the planet, the North and South poles. In 1990
it was raised in cosmic space above the Earth at the orbital
station “Mir”, where it stayed for 10 days, and then raised a
second time while many international crews were working
there in 1997. Then raised once more when the USA Space
Shuttle joined “Mir”. The USA astronaut Michael Foale said:
“We hoisted this Banner of Peace into cosmic space in
order to remind all people about our universal responsibility
for the fate of mankind and the planet... Flights of man into
cosmic space are the first steps towards universal culture,
the symbol of which is the Banner of Peace”.
In 1999 the Banner of Peace was presented to the
Secretary General of the UN Kofi Annan and in 2004 to the
representative of Indian Parliament S. Chatterji, who said
that it would be kept as the most precious treasure in the
Parliament of India. In 2007 the Baltic Assembly adopted
the Pact and declared April 15th as the Day of Culture in
the three Baltic states: Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
Around the world, artists of all forms are working
together everyday in film, music, dance, sculpture, painting,
on stage and off, bringing their uniqueness and contributing
it to the whole. Through ease of communication, world wide
communities are being formed in all walks of life. With so
much good happening, its simple to recognize “the harm of
everything negative.” Roerich's words are truer now than

ever before and he speaks across the years to us when he
says “We prepare for the next generations by valuing
enlightened positiveness and constructiveness.”
What an epoch-making day might be before us
when the Banner of Peace will be unfurled over all
countries, all centers of spirit, beauty and knowledge. This
sign will call everyone to revere and value the treasures of
human greatness. However, what an epoch-making day
might be before us when the Banner of Peace and Culture
will also be unfurled in our hearts, calling us to revere and
value the treasures of human greatness and the humans
who produced them as well.
