Special Olympics Minnesota believes that consistent training is essential to the development of sports skills, and that competition among those of equal abilities is the most ap-propriate means of testing these skills, measuring progress and providing incentives for personal growth. Special Olympics Minnesota believes that through sports training and competition, people with intellectual disabilities benefit physically, mentally and socially; families are strengthened; and the community at large, both through participation and observation, is united in understanding people with intellectual disabilities in an environment of equality, respect and acceptance. CANADIAN PACIFIC HOLIDAY TRAINIn 1999, Canadian Pacific began running a freight train decorated with thousands of Christmas lights across Canada to raise awareness of the issue of hunger prevalent in all communities. The goal of the Holiday Train is to collect food and money for local food banks and to raise awareness in the fight against hunger. At each event, the Holiday Train provides a box car stage and a lineup of great musical talent. The community, in turn, is encouraged to donate food and funds, all of which stays in the community. The schedule for the train has not been published yet, but we will travel to a nearby community (some of last year’s stops: Owatonna, Waseca, Hastings) to see this beautiful and fun holiday show. The performance lasts one half hour, so we will have time to shop the local vendors at the train stop. Dress warm as the show is outdoors. A snack will be provided on the bus. Kids are welcome as Santa is on the train too! Watch for more information, but please give us your name if you are interested so we know we have enough for a bus and we can get information to you. ECFE Parent Advisory Council Update

PAC (Parent Advisory Council) had a busy summer. We worked again at the Lion's Bingo stand and will be kicking off our year at the Farmers Market on September 1. Last year we earned $1,557 and with that money we were able to help pay for the Costume Party, Holiday Express and purchase ipods and docks for the ECFE classrooms. We hope that we can continue to help support quality offerings this year. The ECFE PAC board would like to thank everyone that has volunteered their time or has contributed to any of our fundraisers. You help make these events possible and we are truly grateful for your support. For the 2010-2011 school year we are helping with the ECFE Baby Shower as well as the Costume Party and Holiday Express. We also want to continue promoting ECFE in our community and be involved with early education. As a group, we support ECFE by volunteering, providing feedback and seeking others to help us at various events. Listed to the right are activities we are heading up or supporting and if you can help in any way we would appreciate it. We look for volunteers to decorate, set up, clean up and help at the events so come and get involved. Thank you for considering!ECFE Parent Advisory Council Board

What is Early Childhood Screening (ECS)?In Minnesota, all children are required to complete Early Childhood Screening before they enter kindergarten. It is a free service that helps you find out how your child is developing, connects you and your child to early childhood programs and provides resources for parenting questions.

What Should I Expect at an ECS?Your child will visit a nurse to have his/her vision and hearing checked. After their visit with the nurse your child will go in and work with another person who will do the developmental screening. After your child is taken to the developmental screening room, the nurse will review general health and nutrition practices as well as immunization information with you. When the person that is doing the developmental screening is done with the assessment, they will come and get you to go over the information with you. You will also have a chance to ask any final questions at this time.

When Should I Schedule an ECS Appointment? You should schedule an appointment when your child is 3 1/2 years old. We have found that this age works the best, as it allows us to provide you with information about early childhood programs and it allows us to provide your child with any services that they may need to get ready for kindergarten. This is not a test that they need to pass to go to kindergarten, but the state requires all children to be screened.

How Do I Schedule an ECS AppointmentYou will need to call Kris at 378-2451 to schedule an appointment. ECS appointments are available on Fridays from 8:00-2:00. The following are scheduled ECS dates for the 2010-2011 School Year. Friday, September 10 Friday, October 1 Friday, November 12 Friday, December 10 Friday, January 14 Friday, February 4 Friday, March 11
