Get Your Vitamin D From MushroomsStore-bought mushrooms contain on average 2.3 mcg of vitamin D per 100 grams (about 3-4 mushrooms), which is 23

percent of your daily needs. This number can be greatly increased when mushrooms get additional sun.

A study by the University of Sydney found that mushrooms left in the midday sun for about onehour produced roughly 10 mcg of vitamin D per 100 gram serving. Another found that a short burst ofUV-B rays increased vitamin D2 levels to 17.6 mcg per 100 grams, equal to levels found in otherfood sources of vitamin D, such as fatty fish.

This is a big dose of the sunshine vitamin. Be sure to check with your doctor beforereplacing vitamin D supplements with natural alternatives, but mushrooms are a great way toboost your levels naturally. Simply allow your mushrooms to sunbathe outside or on an openwindowsill for 1-2 hours to create your own natural vitamin D “supplement”… one that actuallytastes good, too.

The 5-Minute Fix to Improve Your DayWe attract whatever mood we are putting out. If we’re angry and negative, more negativity will come our

way. If we smile in spite of difficulties, positive things will begin to take shape. The truth is, all of us have theability to turn any bad mood around rather quickly if we set our mind to it. The secret is to immerse ourselves in

something we love. And it just takes 5 minutes – 5 minutes of complete and utter love.

Find something that always makes you smile, whether it’s your favorite song, a steaming cup of hotcocoa, standing in the sunshine or looking at a favorite photo or scene. Whatever it is, completelyimmerse yourself in it for 5 minutes. Rather than focus on the frustrating events of your day, fullyengage in this positive activity. Blast your favorite song on your headphones or radio and sing along and

dance. Allow happiness to flood you. Most of the time, this small break from the issues of your day will beenough to turn your day and your mood around.

Campbell’s Supports GMO LabelingThe Campbell Soup Company has announced its support of federal legislation to establish a single

mandatory labeling standard for foods derived from genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) andplans to voluntarily disclose the presence of GMO’s in all its foods in the absence of such a standard.Campbell’s has also withdrawn its support from the efforts of groups working to oppose federal GMOlabeling, such as the Grocery Manufacturers Association.

“This announcement is a major victory for consumers and sets Campbell’s apart from many of its industrypeers. 92 percent of Americans support GMO labeling, so Campbell’s commitment to transparency in itsingredients will be warmly welcomed by U.S. consumers,” said Elizabeth O’Connell, director of consumeradvocacy for Green America. “Campbell’s is going far beyond any of its competitors to support the people’sRight to Know what’s in their food.”

GMO labeling is now required in Vermont, where Campbell’s has introduced packaging thatdiscloses if a product contains GMO ingredients. Campbell’s announced that if a federal labeling standard could not beagreed upon, the company was prepared to label all of its U.S. products for the presence of GMO ingredients.

“Campbell’s decision to withdraw its support from anti-labeling efforts and voluntarily disclose its GMO ingredients on itspackaging sets the company apart from other consumer packaged goods companies,” said Todd Larsen, co-executive director ofGreen America. “Other companies should take note of consumer preference and follow Campbell’s lead in disclosing GMO’s.”

In 2015, Campbell’s announced new lines of organic soups that contained no GMO’s and also announced it wouldremove MSG from its soups, as well as organic wheat versions of its iconic Goldfish crackers.

Welcome to the new Trending feature. Here, we will discuss what’s hot and what’s not in life, the universe and everything. For this issue, what’s hot is meeting joyfully and mindfully… notdrunkenly. Gathering over an artful cocktail with friends is still fabulous, but getting wastedas a way of socializing is not. That’s so 1980s (and yes, I grew up in the 1980s so I wouldknow). How about bringing your green drink to a meet-up of awesome, like-minded people?Yes! No regrets, no hang-overs, just a wonderful time and energy for that morning run or yogaclass. Many excellent adventures can be had while completely sober. Here are a few that arehappening across the country:

Wanderlust Festivals(http://wanderlust.com/festivals/)

Wanderlust Festivals are billed as all-out celebrations of mindfulliving. They bring together a remarkable group of yoga andmeditation instructors, musical performers, speakers, artists andchefs for transformational retreats in the world’s most awe-inspiring natural resorts. They create an experience that gets into your mind, body and soul. For 2016, they have festivalsin North America scheduled for Hawaii, West Virginia, Vermont, Colorado, California, British Columbia and Quebec. It issaid that Wanderlust is an experience that leaves you different than when you came — with new ideas, new friends, newlydiscovered abilities and greater peace. Like it. Love it. Need to attend the one in CO.

Daybreaker (http://dybrkr.com/)

How about a glittery dance party before work? This is an idea whose timehas come, right?! Why not show up to the office with a smile and spring inyour step. Daybreaker organizes sober morning raves in major cities acrossthe globe. If there’s not one yet in your city, then you can apply to be aproducer on their website. But get ready to answer questions like: Are youawesome? Are you immortal? What’s your daily level of mischief?

The Big Quiet (http://www.bigquiet.nyc/)

Meditating with others can be fun and impactful. Medi Club, agroup of Modern Meditators, organized its first free massmeditation in Central Park in NYC in June 2015, and more eventsare to follow. Their mission is to make meditation part of ourculture and foster a sense of community and interconnectedness. And here’s the truly awesome part — there’s an after party. I lovethis modern twist on meditation. Time is spent quieting the mindand looking inward, and then you party like it’s 1999 with a like-minded, sober community.

going to bed often doesn'thelp their body prepare forsleep. For example, Bill was eatingbetween 7:30 or 8:00 p.m., when itwould have been better for him to eat at5:00 pm and then have a snack an hourbefore bed. That is exactly what Irecommended, and the snack beforebed? Oatmeal!

Oatmeal is typically recommended tolower cholesterol; however it is also asource of tryptophan. This makesoatmeal perfect for eating at night anhour before bed.

Because Bill has high cholesterol, Irecommended supplementing hisoatmeal with hemp hearts, chia seeds, ground flax seed and pumpkin seeds. Not only are these heart-healthy foods, they have the added benefit ofconsiderable amounts of protein.Pumpkin seeds have significantly moretryptophan than oatmeal and they havemore protein per ounce than turkey!Plus add a non-dairy milk, oat milk andcinnamon and you now haveinsomniacs’ oatmeal!

Not everyone is a Cowboy Breakfastperson. There are others I call SunriseBreakfast people. These people arehungry the minute they wake up andtheir body requires a high plant-proteinbreakfast such as the insomniacs’oatmeal described above or a grain withlots of nuts and seeds; for instance, riceporridge with hemp hearts, chia seedsand cashews.

Other foods that help the body

prepare for sleepinclude comfort

foods. Althoughcarbohydrates (bread and pasta)

are typically comfort foods, wholegrains with essential fatty acids areespecially comforting. That is why myinsomniac oatmeal is so good for you atbedtime. Couple this with a dinner ofsalmon, rice and vegetables (spinach,Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, sweetpotatoes, yams or winter squash) isperfect for insomniacs.

Insomnia can be a difficult problemto tackle because of the wide variety ofprimary and secondary causes. Forexample the pineal gland is responsiblefor producing melatonin, a hormonethat regulates sleep. And melatonin isproduced when you are sleeping. If youaren’t sleeping then you aren’t makingmelatonin; if you aren’t makingmelatonin, you aren’t sleeping! This iswhy nutritional balance, supplementation and timing of mealscan set you up for true health.

Collin Ruiz believes holistic nutrition includesconsciously eating healthy foods thatpromote vibrant physical and mental health, while supporting a strong immune systemand preventing disease. With a Mastersdegree in nutrition and incorporating muscletesting to evaluate nutritional options, Collinstrives to integrate a balanced eating planinto her client’s [email protected] 970-631-1830

Bill was a former weight lifter whowas used to eating a high protein(animal) breakfast (what I call a

Cowboy Breakfast: steak and eggs). Heswitched to eating oatmeal for breakfastin an attempt to lower his cholesterol. He was experiencing issues withinsomnia and low energy in theafternoons.

When I met Bill he was treating hisenergy slump by adding vitaminsupplements. After feeling an energycrash, most people reach for stimulants:caffeine, sugar, cigarettes or energydrinks. These are all Band-Aids.Matching nutritional needs and timingof meals helps maintain adequate energyreserves throughout the day.

In Bill’s case I recommended that hisbreakfast and lunch include high proteinanimal AND plant based foods whilereducing his carbohydrates andeliminating fruit. I also recommendedadding adaptogens for adrenal support.Adaptogens are herbs that adapt to theindividual needs of the body to provideessential support for your adrenalsystem. For example, Ashwagandha(Withania somnifera), Astragalus root(Astragalus membranaceus) andRhodiola rosea help to manage thebody's response to stress.

Next we looked at how to align Bill’snutritional needs to tackle his insomnia.Popular sleep aids include melatonin, valerian root and pharmaceutical sleepaids such as Ambian. However, whatpeople eat for dinner or take before

“What, it’s not my insomnia but what I’meating?” asked Bill. “Yes, that is what I’msaying!” As a Holistic Nutritionist, I have heardmany people complain that by the afternoonthey have trouble concentrating, their patienceis growing short, and their cravings for junkfood is at an all time high. Eating the rightthings at the right time can set you up forsuccess, energy during the day AND a goodnight’s sleep!

Practical Intuition

Our intuition is an inner voicethat speaks with an essence of love.As we connect to that loving energy,we feel supported. We feel relaxedand safe, knowing that everythinghappening at this moment has agreater purpose.

Begin with those small calls toaction, the ones that say, Today reachout to your friend, because who knowswhat that friend is going through atthis moment? Understand that thosegut feelings, and that sense ofurgency behind them, may very wellbe lifesaving for that dear loved oneof yours.

If you “hold on” to that intuitiveguidance, it’s like a mail carrierreceiving a parcel and refusing todeliver it. If you keep it to yourself, only one person is going to benefitfrom it, and that’s you. However, ifyou choose to share that message –to have the courage and the

confidence to speak what you feel –then it may change the lives of yourloved ones and allow them to feelhappier and freer... and be inspiredto then trust their own gut feelings. They, in turn, will share theirintuitive messages, and that rippleeffect spreads.

As you listen to your innerguidance, it may tell you somethingsimple, such as Switch lanes, whileyou’re driving in the car. It maybecome more complex, such as, Youneed to leave that relationship, Youneed to change careers, or You need tomove.

Your intuition can be like aninternal lie detector. When you meetsomeone, you can immediately tell ifyou like him or her or if somethingabout what he or she is saying ringsuntrue. You get a sense ofsomebody’s energy the instant thatyou make a connection, and yourinternal lie detector says, Yes, this is a

wonderful person! Or, it does theopposite and tells you to get as faraway as you possibly can.

Sometimes you pick up ondifferent energies when you’re insomebody’s home. Do you feeluplifted, or do you get a sense thatthe person is just trying to impressyou? Is that energy stagnant withnegativity? You’ll know.

So please trust the messages thatyou receive when you meetsomebody or when you enter a newenvironment. Do so especially ifyou’re going to see practitioners orhealers, because if you go into a spacefeeling uncertain or afraid, that’s asign to step back.

This is something that we’velearned to listen to when we’ve beeninvited to attend particular seminars. We feel that our purpose here onEarth is to help as many people as wecan. We hope to spread healingmessages about spirituality, naturalhealth, God, and the angels. But westill have to trust our own intuition.Sometimes we get invited to speak atevents that sound wonderful, butthere’s something in our gut thatsays, Don’t do it.

When we trust that information, even though it might feeluncomfortable at the time, we’rethen able to look back on that eventat a later date and understand whywe were guided to stay away. Oftenit’s not because the organizers orattendees were “bad” or anything likethat, but rather something else cameup that more urgently required ourattention. We might not have beenable to give 100 percent at thatparticular event. Perhaps we’d beenso busy throughout the year that weneeded some time to rest.

As you listen to your intuition, you learn that the way in which Godand your angels communicate withyou is special and unique because youare special and unique. Rather than

feeling like you have to fit inside abox, honor your own perceptions.

Trust your intuition. Truly, it’sthe heavenly voice of God and yourangels coming through.

Science and Intuition

At one time, intuition wasconsidered an old wives’ tale. Today, researchers have solid scientificfoundations for the process ofintuition. Dozens of studies supportthe value of intuition in decisionmaking and finding creative

solutions to problems. A recent studystated that medical doctors canachieve better outcomes in theirpatients’ care by calling upon theirintuition when making decisions. The researchers concluded, “Intuitiveand analytical decision processes mayhave complementary effects inachieving the desired outcomes ofpatient decision support” (de Vries etal. 2013). A related study found thatfarmers use intuition more thananalytics.

Many studies have focused on ourphysical reactions to varioussituations, measuring bloodpressure, brain waves, perspirationand heart rate in response to stimuli, such as looking at emotionallycharged photos or video clips. Insome intriguing experiments, theparticipants’ heart and other systemswere shown to react to a photo orvideo even before the people beingstudied were shown the stimulus. Most of these experiments are“double-blind,” which means that

neither the participants nor theresearchers know beforehand whichtype of image the person beingstudied will see. The studies showthat our bodies “know” whensomething emotionally charged iscoming our way.

Perhaps you’ve had thisexperience yourself when you wokeup feeling excited or happy for noknown reason. Or, similarly, you felta sense of dread on a day whensomething unforeseen andunpleasant later occurred.

Research has demonstrated thatour palms begin to sweat when we’rearound something harsh ordangerous several minutes before ourconscious minds can register thethreat. This makes sense, as thehands have a high number of sensoryneuronal connections to the nervoussystem. Scientists believe that if wecould learn to pay attention to ourpalms’ subtle signals, includingperspiration, it would enable us to beconsciously be aware of — and avoid— danger.

Similar studies find that our heartrate and blood pressure increasewhen people are directing negativethoughts our way, and that thesefunctions relax and decrease whenothers are thinking positive thoughtsabout us. It turns out that “sendinglove” is a measurable energy!

Intuition Works with the Body’s Systems

Our ancient ancestors relied ontheir intuition to ensure their

physical safety. Imagine thevulnerable feeling of walking outsideto forage for food, where you dependon your wits to stay alive. This is thesame built-in system wild animalsuse for survival. While we now shopin grocery stores for food and live inhouses, this doesn’t mean that ourancestors’ instincts have “evolvedaway.”

Researchers have pinpointed thebrain’s right hemisphere, which isassociated with emotions and thearts, as the center of our intuition.Additionally, the autonomic nervoussystem, also called our “ancientbrain,” appears to be hardwired toinstinctively react to potentialdanger in a way that could be called“intuitive.” The brain’s limbic system— our feeling center — can sensedanger detected by the autonomicnervous system before it’s physicallyapparent. In this way, our intuition

(if we listen to it) keeps us safe.In the face of stress, our nervous

and endocrine systems work closelytogether to bring about harmony and

balance. These two systems arelinked by the hypothalamus, astructure in the brain’s limbicsystem. While the endocrine systemis made up of many glands, the mostimportant to know in regard tostress and intuition are the pituitaryand adrenal glands. Let’s look at howall these systems work together.

When your nervous systemrecognizes a stressor, it sends amessage to the hypothalamus, whichthen releases hormones to deliverthe message to the pituitary gland.Next, the pituitary sends outhormones influencing the adrenalglands. In turn, this causes youradrenals to release a hormone toreduce the effects of the stress. Thispattern continues until your body issatisfied that you have enoughstress-relieving hormones available.Your body then relaxes, and thenervous system calms.

However, if stress continues forextended periods of time, thebiological exchange of neuro-messages and hormones may becomeunbalanced. If the hypothalamus, pituitary, or adrenal glands becomedepleted, it creates a strain along thecascade. This causes a change in yourstress response, energy levels andhormones.

By supporting your endocrine andnervous systems nutritionally, youwill help keep your intuition clearand sharp. And, conversely, listeningto your intuition is a big factor inreducing your stress levels, as it willguide you to avoid stress-producingsituations in the first place. Yourintuition may also lead you to astress-management program that’scustom-tailored to your interests, schedule, and budget.

Food sensitivities affect asmany as 90 percent ofpeople according to

Theron Randolph, known as the father of environmentalmedicine. Most of these people don’t realize that theirsymptoms are related to the food they eat daily. Are you one ofthem?

I am a classically trained homeopath who works with peoplewith digestive disorders, food sensitivities and related chronicissues. People are more aware that food sensitivities exist, though there is still confusion about what they are.

So what is a food sensitivity? It means you have anunpleasant reaction to certain foods. Common reactions areheartburn, gas or nausea. Surprisingly, symptoms such asheadaches, coughing, acne, mood swings, trouble focusing onmental work, and pronounced sleepiness are also associatedwith food sensitivities.

To make things trickier, food sensitivities can beinconsistent. Maybe you have heartburn every time you eattomato sauce, or maybe it only bothers you when eaten withcheese, or if your stress is high, or if you’re wearing silverjewelry (because you might have a slight sensitivity to silver, too). That is the nature of food sensitivity. It’s variable.

This differs from food allergy, which is defined as aconsistent immune system response to a particular proteinfound in food. Usually these are classified as either IgG or IgEresponses. Rashes, swelling, or breathing difficulties can resultwithin minutes or hours after the protein was eaten.

Food sensitivity, on the other hand, triggers white bloodcells in the body to release pro-inflammatory mediators.Besides making you feel bad, the resulting inflammation issuspected to contribute to many serious health problems.

In my clinical work I always consider the role of foodsensitivity in health problems. Then I work to help theperson’s body resolve those sensitivities, which is possible formost people.

Why are there so many people with food sensitivities now? There are a few theories. One observation is that geneticallymodified foods (GMOs) started making their way into the food

chain at the same time food allergies began rising in the 1990s.In 2009, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine

stated that, “Several animal studies indicate serious healthrisks associated with genetically modified food,” includinginfertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, faulty insulinregulation, and changes in major organs and thegastrointestinal tract. (http://www.aaemonline.org/gmo.php).

The U.S. Department of Agriculture prohibits use ofgenetically modified organisms in organic products. So it makessense to make organic products your first choice of food.

Another theory is that our fixation with anti-bacterialeverything and a lack of exposure to what were previouslynormal childhood illnesses contribute to immune systems thatdon’t develop the way they could.

Have a pet if you can. Let kids get dirty, and spend sometime getting dirty yourself. Working an organic garden is agreat way to do that and provides multiple benefits for health.

Then there’s leaky gut syndrome. Many in integrativemedicine tag this as a major cause of food allergies. Theworking theory is that leaky gut is caused by:

• The standard American diet (SAD)

• Unnecessary antibiotics, which destroy the beneficialmicrobes in our bodies, freeing up space for pathogens, whichdamage our digestive tract and make it “leaky”

• Chronic stress, which weakens the immune system as a whole

• Environmental toxins such as pesticides, smog, fluoride inour water, and pain killers, which overwhelm our bodies’native detoxification abilities

Choosing nutritious, organic foods and natural medicinethat does not damage beneficial microbes in your body, reducing stress, and avoiding toxins can all help your bodyfunction as it should

1. Begin your morning by closing your eyes while youare still in bed and take a few deep breaths. Think ofthree things: one success you had yesterday, howeverlarge or small; one blessing in your life, and one thingyou want to accomplish today. Then begin your day! Dothis every day.

2. Smile. It's amazing how a smile can physiologicallychange you and your attitude. Try it!

3. Take a short walk. Just twelve minutes outside will dowonders for you. Notice the different sights and soundsaround you. Look at the clouds, the color of the sky orthe stars at night.

4. Listen to your favorite music. My favorite is ClaudeDebussy while I'm at my laptop; his music keeps mefocused.

5. Take a few deep breaths. Internationally recognizedstress-management expert and meditation teacherDavidji suggests a four breath meditation. Breathe in

deeply. Notice the pause, and then exhale deeply. Dothis four times. Notice the difference in you.

6. Write it down. Stressed about all you have to do? Makea list. It will get out from inside your head and be visible. And you'll feel better as you cross those things off.

7. End your day with gratitude. A gratitude journal is agreat way to do this. You don't need to write anexpository; it can simply be three words. Don't feel likewriting? While you are drifting off to sleep, think of threegood things in your life; three blessings. Sweet dreams!

The most important skill neededto build and keep a lovingrelationship is communication.

When we begin relationships, weattend to the other person becausewe want to get to know him. Welisten to her likes and dislikes, history, family dynamics, dreams andfears. We spend hours inconversation, discovering each other. No fact too small, no story too long. The building of the relationship hasnewness and surprises. Then, overtime, real life happens. Workpressure, money issues, no time toconnect, and parenting tensionsbecome ever-present distractions.More and more conversations morphinto arguments or confrontations. How did we get here? Whateverhappened to the way we used tocommunicate?

The Roman philosopher Senecasaid, “Who is fair in all the world wholistens to us? Here I am — this is mein my nakedness, with my wounds,my secret grief, my despair, mybetrayal, my pain, which I can’texpress, my terror, myabandonment. Oh, listen to me for aday, an hour, a moment, lest I expirein my terrible wilderness, my lonelysilence. Oh God, is there no one tolisten?”

There is. The person you love whoalso loves you is there to listen. Andlike you, he has forgotten the mostimportant component of deeplistening: being present. There aretwo components to presence, onephysical and one emotional. Both ofthem need attending to if aconversation is to stay rational, adultand successful.

First consider the physical aspectsof the distractions of technology andmulti-tasking. When we add thedistraction that comes with multi-tasking we are in trouble, becauselistening is a single-minded, reasoningtask, and multi-tasking and listeningeffectively at the same time aremutually exclusive. When we look attechnology, with phones ringing, computers popping up e-mail, cellphone ring tones, and text messagealerts beeping all distract us, we knowtechnology is at work distracting usfrom effectively listening. Now, let’sadd yet another layer of multi-tasking, the kind that is second natureand almost invisible to us as is multi-tasking. Many of us are guilty oflooking through the mail whiletalking; typing a quick email on oursmartphone while in conversation; orhaving a conversation while thetelevision is on.

True Communication Requires Your

distractions and being in the momentLeslie Shore

“present” is a simple concept, yet difficult to achieve.Being present is the act of being in the present moment inour mind and body, not thinking about the past or future, but being in the moment with the person we are listeningto. We are not wishing to be somewhere else. Being presentmeans practicing self-control. It means suppressing theurge to convey our own thoughts. It means concentratingon understanding what the other has to say and how she

is saying it. We need to stop talking! As difficult as thatmay be sometimes, not talking can move a conversationforward because the speaker gets a chance to develop andfinish a complete thought. It is amazing what we can learnabout people’s lives, what motivates them, what theyknow, and what they are passionate about if we just listen.

Eckhart Tolle says it wonderfully in Stillness Speaks:“Far more important than what you are listening to is theact of listening itself, the space of conscious presence thatarises as you listen. That space is a unifying field ofawareness in which you meet the other person without theseparative barriers created by conceptual thinking. Andnow the other person is no longer “other.” In that space, you are joined together as one awareness, oneconsciousness.”

Being present is no easy task. It requires taking our egoout of the conversation and keeping our reactive mindunder control. However, the brain is an amazing organthat can be trained and strengthened. In the comingmonths I encourage you to become aware of when you arepresent in a conversation and when your mind andlistening wanders. When you notice your mind wandering, you can take action by pushing aside your thoughts andget back to listening fully.

As the owner of the consultancy Listen to Succeed, LeslieShore has worked with corporations, nonprofits, entrepreneurs, health professionals, and educationalinstitutions to up-level their intra-personal and inter-personalcommunication skills. Her book, Listen to Succeed: How toidentify and overcome barriers to effective listening, is

currently used in four universities.www.ListenToSucceed.com

One of my students made this point in his listeningreflection paper: “As a manager, I am required toconstantly interact with others every day. When I comehome at the end of the day I want nothing more than to sitin silence without the requirement to listen. My wife, however, wants nothing more than to tell me about herday, and so the listening challenge begins. While I havepreviously heard her talk, I realize now that I have notreally listened. I have allowed myneeds to get in the way of myability to be present to what mywife’s thoughts and emotions are.”

There are some simple steps topull the distraction of multi-tasking out of our conversations. When sharing a conversation withyour significant other, find a place, away fromdistractions, so the ritual of debriefing is the top priorityin each other’s eyes. Finding out what happened in eachother’s day and how the other person feels about the dayrequires that you choose a physical space away from thetelevision, video games, computer, music, the mail, cooking, children or other distractions. Make sure you arecomfortable.  By creating such an environment, deeplistening can take place. And DO make the debriefing aritual! Even if you only have five minutes of uninterruptedtime, make it happen at the same time every day.

Now we’ll tackle “being present.” We need to doeverything in our power to take the “I” out of listening. When we “suspend self” as the listener, we are able to truly

take in the speaker’smessage without

filtering theincoming contentand emotionthrough our ownlistening

barriers. Being

Being present is no easy task. It requirestaking our ego out of the conversation andkeeping our reactive mind under control.

Forest bathing originated in Japan, where it is known as shinrin-yoku. Itis a popular meditative technique

that utilizes the forest for its calmingand invigorating effects. Taking acontemplative, tree-focused walkthrough a forest reconnects anindividual with nature and can lead todecreased stress. It also naturallyelevates one’s mood and can build astronger immune system. Forestbathing has been recognized by theJapanese government since 1982 andendorsed by the Forest Agency of Japanas a way to improve a person’s quality oflife.

Qing Li, the president of theJapanese Society of Forest Medicine, which was founded in 2007, studied theeffects of forest bathing on individuals.Using a mood profile, he found that

participants’ feelings of stress, anxietyor anger decreased and their perceptionsof energy or vigor improved. In twoother related studies, Li and fellowresearchers looked at long-term effectsby sending groups of young men andwomen on three-day trips that includedseveral forest baths and a stay in a hotelin the middle of the forest. Blood teststaken before and after showed asignificant boost in natural killer cells, which play a vital role in the immunesystem’s ability to fight off illness. Lispeculated that forest bathing allowsparticipants to breathe in air from thesurrounding trees that contains volatileessential oils and active componentssuch as limonene that haveantimicrobial and immune-boostingproperties.

Forest bathing, which can be thoughtof as focused hiking, is an extremelyeffective meditative practice. To giveforest bathing a try, choose a spot basedon your physical ability. Avoid routesthat are too strenuous. As a rule ofthumb, you should walk no more thanthree miles in four hours. It’s importantto keep in mind that this is not anendurance hike — think of it as a tree-focused meditation. As you walkthrough the tranquil forest and focus onthe towering trees, the leaves andvegetation underfoot and the sounds ofbirds or other small creatures aroundyou, your busy mind is simultaneouslycalmed and your stress hormones andblood pressure are lowered. Restwhenever you need by finding a spotwhere it is pleasant to sit. Focus yourattention on the trees around you andtake in your surroundings with as manyof your senses as possible. Bring alongwater or green tea to keep yourself wellhydrated. If possible, follow your forestbath with a hot spring bath.

Developing a practice by taking a trip

to a nearby forest (or heavily woodedarea) once a month and engaging in aforest bath, can bring you long-lastingmind-body benefits. If getting to a forestor the woods is not currently possiblebecause of where you live, considerother ways to connect with nature in amore conscious way. Here are a fewideas to get you started:

1. Take a daily stroll in a local park.

2. Take your lunch break outside in anatural setting, preferably amongsttrees, near a creek or in a garden.

3. Take a walk in nature with yourchildren and bring along notebooksand pencils to record yourobservations.

4. Create a quiet space in your yardwhere you can sit and observe localnature.

5. Learn to sketch as a hobby and spendsome time sketching in a nearbynature spot.

6. Take an overnight camping weekendonce a month in a natural setting.

Whether or not you can begin aforest bathing practice, keep in mindthat by simply spending time in natureas often as possible, you will provideyour body and mind with many life-enhancing benefits.

Watsu is performed in a poolfilled with chest-deep saltwater. Unlike most therapy

pools with higher temperatures, water in Watsu pools is maintainedat body temperature. Thus, the bodydoes not need to exert any energy towarm up or cool down. The client(receiver) is continuously supportedby a practitioner (provider) whilebeing back floated, rhythmicallycradled, moved and stretched. Bodywork in warm water frees the personfrom the effects of gravity whichallows the body to release holding

patterns from old injuries and stressrelated tightness.

The provider involves the receiverin a progression of breathcoordination and movementpatterns which are based on thatperson’s specific needs andresponses. The provider constantlymonitors the state of the receiver, mindful of subtle changes in muscletension and respiration and adaptsthe treatment accordingly.

Watsu: A Spiritual Experience

Phyllis K. Kennemer

Can you imagine the feeling of having no sense of gravity? I am not talking about goinginto outer space. It is possible to have this sensation right here in Colorado. It happensduring Watsu sessions. Watsu is a form of aquatic bodywork used for physicalrehabilitation, muscle therapy and deep relaxation.

Watsu is used as a form of passiveaquatic therapy for physicalrehabilitation of illness, injury anddisability. Healthy people engage inWatsu for relaxation, musclestretching and profound meditation.

Harold Dull is credited withdeveloping Watsu in Harbin HotSprings, California, in the 1980s. Hecombined methods used in Shiatsu (aJapanese muscle treatment performedby therapists with clients lying onmats on the ground) with flowingmovement techniques made possibleby doing the treatment in water.

Aimee Heckel, a reporter for theBoulder Camera, wrote an article aboutWatsu for her newspaper (February 12,2014) describing her experience in acouple’s session with her husband. Deb anda local colleague provided the treatmentfor the two of them simultaneously. Heckeldescribed her experience as freeing andspiritual. She stated that Watsu taps intoa deep part, far beyond the physical – aspace accessed only in rare breakthroughmoments of deep mediation.

Maura Clare, a Boulder resident, contacted Deb as a result of readingHeckel’s article. She started seeing Deb insearch of relief from muscle tension. Shereports that the tension has been relievedand that she continues with monthlysessions as part of her self-care practice.Maura feels a complete release fromtension during her treatments. The feelingof weightlessness begins with a sense offreedom, almost like flying, and thenplaces her in a deep meditative state. Shehas discovered profound observationswithin herself that go beyond intellectualdescription. Every session continues herprogress in self-knowledge.

Deb Evangelista of Essential ElementBodywork is an integrative aquatic therapist. She offers Watsu sessions in a large saltwater pool located on her family’s propertynear Longmont. Deb sees her role as holdingspace for the individual and for wellnessthrough creating a place of safety and peace. Her somatic therapy is based inunderstanding the connection of the mindand body for maintaining optimum health. Most of her clients climb an outside ladder tostep into the pool, but she also has ahydraulic lift chair for use with those who arephysically challenged.

Deb talks fondly of the installation of herpool, the amenities she provides, andrecycled materials she used to create aninviting and spiritual environment. Shedescribes her pool area as sacred space. Mostof her clients experience meaningfulmeditation during treatment. Many of themtell her that ideas or issues bubble up to thesurface of their conscious awareness where

they can be recognized and released. Debexplains that clients often come to her withphysical problems, such as aches and pains ormuscle issues. The water therapy relievesthese symptoms, but clients report that thegreater good from the session is the spiritualsense of well-being that results.

What do I aim for as I age? What does aging mean tome? How do I deal with my

fears of aging? How can I findfulfillment and dignity as I growolder? What is the purpose of my lifeafter retirement?

Such questions of meaning andpurpose arise in the quiet hours formany of us but are seldom asked, answered or even acknowledged inpublic. Often we consider only themonetary aspects of aging. Whileaddressing our financial and physicalsecurity is certainly important, it isequally important to address theneeds of our emotional and spiritualselves — our needs to thrive as wellas survive.

My work is to share with others avision of aging, often called“conscious aging” or “conscious

eldering,” that recognizes andsupports all that is life-enhancingand passion-awakening as wecontemplate the later chapters of ourlives. These years can be a time ofdeep fulfillment as we reach thepinnacle of our personal and spiritualgrowth. They can be an opportunityfor the kind of service to communityand sharing of wisdom that, throughout most of human history, defined the honored role thatcultures accorded their elders.

For those inspired by this vision, conscious aging is a pathcharacterized by meaningful goals forour elderhood that spring from ourauthentic selves rather than theexpectations of the society aroundus, and by our use of the power ofintention and inner work to makeour sense of what is possible a

Aiming HighThe art, the practice and the gift of conscious agingRon Pevny

The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is toohigh and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.

Our ability toreach our goals is very muchdependent uponthe state of ourinner life and theinner developmentwork we do tobring clear, healthy energy toour lives as we age.

reality. It is a challenging path thatrequires the courage to aim high andbring awareness and intention to ouraging, rather than drift into old agewithout goals that can bring out thebest in us.

This is not only about aiming forlofty goals, however. Our ability toreach our goals is very muchdependent upon the state of ourinner life and the inner developmentwork we do to bring clear, healthyenergy to our lives as we age. Wehave all heard “wherever you go,there you are.” There is great value inseriously reflecting on “what kind ofa self am I bringing to my later lifechapters?”

As we move through life, wesuffer the “slings and arrows ofoutrageous fortune.” We are allwounded by others, by painfulexperiences, by our own misguidedchoices and actions. These woundsoften produce lingering, heart-closing resentments and numb ouremotional lives. Many of us harborregrets and are weakened bydisempowering internal stories ofbeing victims, or inadequate, orunworthy. We have absorbed andinternalized countless messages fromthe society around us about who weare and what should have meaningfor us, and in the process we becomesomewhat estranged from our ownauthentic selves and our internalguidance for our lives.

All of these realities, largelyunconscious for most of us, bind ourlife energy to emotional baggage, sapour passion and blind us to ourunique potential. The lack of energy, passion and sense of purpose that somany experience in their senior yearsis not primarily a function of age, butrather of these life-draining innerdynamics. Critical to conscious agingis commitment to inner work to freeup our energy and passion by healingold wounds, forgiving resentments, transforming regrets, re-writing

disempowering old stories, replacingcounterproductive habits withconscious choices, and getting intouch with the spiritual dimensionfrom which our visions and ourunique, authentic goals can emerge. We are then able to aim high.

Conscious aging is not a path thateveryone will embrace. However, agrowing number of baby boomers aswell as those beyond their sixties areindeed hearing a strong call fromwithin to age consciously. Are youone of them? What do you plan to dowith the remaining chapters of yourprecious life? If you recognize that

call within yourself, I encourage youto respond as if your deepestfulfillment depends upon it, and thewellbeing of the generations tofollow you depends upon the choicesyou and others make. Because theydo.

Collectively we can lay thefoundation for a healthy world inwhich our descendents can thrive. There is no greater legacy we canleave to future generations, and nogreater gift we can give to ourselves, than to aim high as we age, ever

reaching for our best. The worldneeds the wisdom, wholeness, passion and gifts of conscious elders.

For several days after Mother’s Day,I diligently scan the forecast, waiting to see a prediction of ten

days in a row where the minimumtemperatures stay at 40° or above. Eventhen, planting my delicate summerstarters of tomatoes, cantaloupe, andbroccoli is a risk. When I hustle outsidein inclement weather, throwing sheetsand covers over those persnicketyvegetables, I am thankful for the ease ofplanting heartier spring crops, startingfrom seeds as early as March.

Luckily, even here in Colorado withsuch crazy weather extremes, I know mypeas, onions, radishes and fresh greenswill not disappoint. A typical springharvest yields more produce than I knowwhat to do with, and that led me tocreate the following recipe All of theproduce and ingredients can be grown orpurchased organically.

I recently spent a weekend at my childhood home withmy family. Even though I only live five hours away, this doesn’t happen often enough. Going home always

brings out this nostalgia for the past, for life growing up insuburban Milwaukee. It is both wonderful and sad at thesame time. Since I am in the process of planning awedding, my mother and I spent a morning going throughold pictures. I was looking for photos to create aslideshow to play at a pre-wedding party.

My parents keep all of their photos in a largemetal box and trust me, nothing is organized. Thebox is filled with a jumble of pictures from thevarious stages of my parents’, siblings’ andextended families’ lives. It’s truly fascinating to seephotos of your parents, aunts and uncles whenthey were your age. Seeing pictures from theirwedding as I plan my own, brings everything full circle. Itmakes me feel lucky and full of joy to have grown up withsuch support and love. It takes time and a visit home totruly appreciate these things.

In honor of this new-found nostalgia I decided it wouldbe fun to celebrate my German heritage and make a simpleyet delicious German dish… Ribs and Kraut.

Ribs & Kraut

2 racks of ribs (cut into individual ribs)4 lbs sauerkraut 1 onion sliced thin2 lbs baby Yukon gold potatoes2 Tbsp olive oil1 beer (A Pilsner or cream ale; nothing too hoppy or bold. You

can also substitute white wine.)Salt and pepper

In a large stock pot, heat olive oil over medium highheat. Toss the ribs in salt and pepper to season them. Inbatches, sear the ribs until they are golden brown. Setaside.

Add onion to pot with a pinch of salt and pepper andcook until tender. Add 2 pounds of the sauerkraut (withjuice) and cook for another 5 minutes. Layer ribs on top ofsauerkraut and onions and add another pound ofsauerkraut. Place potatoes on top of ribs and layer the lastpound of sauerkraut on top of potatoes. Pour in the beerand bring everything to a boil. Cover pot, reduce heat tolow and simmer for 2 and a half to 3 hours. Poureverything out on a platter and enjoy!

Note that this recipe serves 6-8 people and can be cutin half easily.

Warrior Pose: How Yoga(Literally) Saved My Life

By Bhava Ram

Bhava Ram (a.k.a. Brad Willis)was a successful NBC News warcorrespondent prior to a career-ending back injury that could notbe corrected surgically. Thisdebilitating condition wasfollowed by a diagnosis of stage

four throat cancer which he treated conventionally.Western medicine could not offer deep healing or cures forthese conditions, so after living a life of chronic pain, disability, addiction and fear of recurring cancer, Bhavalistened to the voice within and healed himself using thesciences of Yoga and Ayurveda. He is now a world-renowned spiritual teacher, and I had the pleasure ofinterviewing him on Gen R Radio on January 27, 2015. Hediscussed the ancient texts that influenced him, includingthe Vedas, Gita and Yoga Sutras, and how their wisdomcan be applied to modern life. He described how heteaches others to tap into their inherent power totransform themselves physically, emotionally andspiritually, and to appreciate the interconnectedness of allthings. Bhava’s transformation is truly remarkable, and anexample of the power that we all possess.

Previously, I have offeredinformative articles on highimpact, high results treatments,

including CO2 resurfacing, IPL/BBLlaser therapy, and laser hair removal. But perhaps you need to release the‘winter blues’ with a relaxingexperience that will pamper you andimprove the appearance and radianceof your skin…. Consider a facialtreatment that is designedspecifically for your skin type, andfor your personal desired results.

A facial can be the most heavenlyway to relax your entire body. Doneproperly, it gently stimulates andrefreshes your skin, while the quietand the subtle aromatherapy scentsbring overall relaxation to your bodyand mind.

Your facial should always startwith a consultation. Your therapistneeds your input on your skinconcerns and issues. Be honest, andlet her know areas that bother you orareas of concern. That helps yourtherapist direct you to the mostrewarding facial option. Next, she

gently, but thoroughly cleans yourface and neck so it can be analyzed todetermine skin type (dry, oily, combination, normal, and perhapssensitive). Acne, aging, dryness, anddamaged skin assessment also occursat this time. Your therapist willsuggest facial treatment(s) mostappropriate to your skin and desiredoutcome.

Some facials include gentle steamdepending on our skin type. Themoist heat is very relaxing andprepares your skin for the next stepin a facial. An exfoliant may befollow, which can be mechanical, using a fine textured ingredient orcan be chemical, such as an enzyme.

Removal of blackheads andwhiteheads if needed occurs next. This can be a bit uncomfortable, sosome prefer to skip this step if arelaxing treatment is the final goal. Then a facial mask is applied andchosen with your specific skinconcerns in mind. A gentle head, neck and face massage either beforeor after the mask heightens the

relaxing experience. The final step to this luxurious

treatment is application of serums, moisturizers, and a sunscreenspecific to your skin type. Yourtherapist should offer advice on howto maintain your skin and suggestproducts that can help you maintainhealthy, beautiful skin.

To maintain both the health ofyour skin, and for that relaxationthat is essential for all of us, ongoingfacial treatments are best to improveand maintain your skin. A monthlyor at least quarterly treatment is atreasure for your skin andrejevenation for the soul.
