Lamanai RuinsNamed after Mayan ruler Lord Smoking Shell, who believed he was a descendant of the crocodile spirit, the name “Lamanai” means “submerged crocodile.” As a result you’ll come across a number of crocodile carvings (and even some real crocodiles in the lagoon) as you explore these ruins, which date back as far as 1500 B.C. View three large pyramids, residential ar-eas, some open plazas and a ball court. Make sure to check out the view from the High Temple, which looks out over the treetops, and the Mask Temple, where tall stone faces are carved into the sides of the structure.
Xunantunich Ruins and Chaa CreekTravel by ferry from San Ignacio to the Xunantunich Ruins. Perched on a hilltop with a magnificent view of the upper Belize River Valley area, the ruins include the imposing El Castillo pyramid. The center of the city is a display of classical Mayan architecture with six plazas and more than 25 temples. It’s thrilling to know that the surrounding dense jungle hides unex-cavated ruins. On your visit to the Chaa Creek Natural History Center, learn about the region’s native peo-ples, their architecture and artifacts, culture and many unique languages. Discover the area’s diverse flora, including medicinal plants used throughout Belizean history and today.

Peccary Hills National ParkWear a sturdy pair of boots today because your trip includes a guided jungle hike! In Peccary Hills Na-tional Park, you’ll explore rainforests crisscrossed with streams and caves once inhabited by the Maya. Look for tropical birds fluttering in the canopy, reptiles soaking in the sun, perhaps an old turtle making its way through a cool stream. After your hike, high in the jungle canopy, the zip-line platforms await. You’ll learn how to properly navigate a zip-line before being safely secured and traveling through the air from one platform to the next. It’s a thrilling method of transpor-tation you won’t soon forget.
