“Youths encountered God”By Nofel Albay

“Youth is the hope of the future”, Dr. Jose Rizal once said that the young generation has a great impact in the progress of our country. It is a crucial task to establish and inculcate in the youth’s hearts and minds a strong foundation to love one’s self, family, neighbors and especially God. St. Andrew the Apostle Parish (SAAP) continues its mission to mold young fishers of Christ through different engaging activities and formation seminar such as the Youth Encounter.

SAAP-PYM conducted its 2nd Youth Encounter, a 3-day unexpected encounter with God, last October 29-31. It was held at the Lay Formation Center, San Carlos Pastoral Formation Complex, Guadalupe, Makati City. The encounter was organized by the Parish Youth Ministry (PYM) with all the support of our parish priest Msgr. Dennis Odiver. Up With People: Bridging Barriers through MusicBy Lara Mae Brucal and Ma. Gem Rico

Exciting, Fun and Fulfilling. It has been a fascinating and wonderful night when the SAAP-PYM attended the presentation of “Up with People” entitled V-O-I-C-E-S (Vibrant Original International Cultural Energetic Show) which was held at Colegio de San Agustin Theatre, Makati last October 27, Saturday.

Up with People aims to promote and encourage the young people from different countries in the world through constructive and powerful ways of expressing talents such as dancing, singing and acting on stage. They sang songs in different languages and performed culture and traditions of some countries. The cast wore colourful dresses that made the show livelier and wonderful. They have angelic voices that made everyone feel like they’re in heaven. Up with People also performed pop, classic, medley, songs in 60’s and RNB that made the show really great and enjoyable. The event was full of joy and surprises because of the powerful music that was performed by the international cast. Some members of

the PYM were encouraged to join the cast on stage and do the ice breaker activity (“Hello” in different languages).

The audience was flattered when the cast sang two Filipino songs entitled “Tuwing Umuulan at Kapiling ka” and “Biyaheng Pilipino”. The cast really tried their best to amaze the Filipino audience even though they have difficulty in singing the Tagalog songs. They also helped in promoting the tourism in the Philippines by singing “Biyaheng Pilipino”. They proved that culture, religion and race are not hindrances in achieving World Peace.

After watching this show, we realized that the world has changed a lot. But what we can do is to work on the young people in our communities and encourage them to share their talents with other people and be good examples. Stand Up now! Do something and make a change. Together, we’ll take a stand.

(Up with People (UWP) is a global education organization whose mission is to bridge cultural barriers and create global understanding through service and music. UWP was founded on the principle of using music as a means of communicating with and inspiring people. Source: Wikipedia)

Believe and Trust in the Year of Faith... from page 1

The Year of Faith is an invitation for Catholics to study again the Second Vatican Council and the Catechism of the Catholic Church that is its fruit in order to rediscover the vitality of the faith we have inherited. It also invites us to look closely at the contemporary world, its beauty, and wounds. The continuity of the Church through the ages allows various forms of renewal. The Church receives, celebrates, and lives the faith in different historical settings with their unique demands and challenges. The opening of the Year of Faith coincided with the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council and the 20th anniversary of the release of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

In the beginning of the homily of Archbishop Tagle, he said: “We might say that is something in other nations, but in our country, that is not our problem. Our churches are overflowing, our processions have very long lines, so many children are baptized every Sunday. ... Thank God, faith is so alive in our country. Filipinos should not be overly confident that this problem only exists in other countries since there are still many Catholics who attend and profess their faith during Sunday Masses and traditional religious processions and we show off our devotion during the feasts of the Black Nazarene, Sto. Niño and La Naval. The Philippines, specifically the area covered by the Archdiocese of Manila, is not exempt. But we also believe that the contemporary world, especially the youth and the poor, expresses its search for God in ways that the Church must also discover.”

However, Archbishop Tagle pointed out examples of “nominal atheism” and “practical atheism” in Philippine society. “There are some people who, with their mouths, say, ‘I believe in God,’ but in practice, have no use for God. On Sunday, they say very devoutly, ‘I believe in God the Father Almighty.’ ... Come Monday, they cheat, all because of money. They step on other people because they want promotion. They have no regard for goodness and justice, just to gain position. ... Maybe this person does not really believe in the true God. The Year of Faith is for all and urged Catholics to proclaim their faith by telling others shamelessly that they are Catholic through words, by being joyful and to pray. Faith is a relationship with God that needs to be nurtured, and God initiates by speaking to people. This year, may we give more time for Jesus, who speaks to us through the Bible and

the teachings of the Church. The challenge of the Year of Faith is to believe and to trust. How can people trust in God who they cannot see when we have no faith and can’t trust in people who are visible to us?”

Moreover, he shared how God surprised him during the synod, when Pope Benedict named him cardinal: “I don’t know what happened. It was very unexpected. The appointment challenges me and all Filipino faithful in this Year of Faith and the October 21 canonization of San Pedro Calungsod. When God comes into our life, even when it is not the right time, or not in tune with our plans, or not according to what we are thinking, are we ready to believe? Are we ready to surrender and allow ourselves to serve as the way for his Word and his blessings on earth?”

He invited the people to “accompany, not only me, but the whole archdiocese. Being made cardinal is not just recognition for me. The appointment comes with a big responsibility. Hindi lang honor kundi may kasama ring malaking misyon ang pagkakapili sa akin. (With this honor comes great responsibility). We will work doubly hard to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of a Cardinal. Sana tayong lahat ay laging maging mulat kung gaano tayo kamahal ng Diyos at ng Santo Papa. Harinawa ay hindi lang karangalan ang ating isispin kungdi pati ang misyon nating pagbutihin ang pagiging predominantly Christian country sa Asia. What is really being recognized is all of us, the whole communion of God in the Archdiocese of Manila and the Philippines. The Holy Father wants our archdiocese to be always close to him, and our experiences, especially our testimonies of faith, to be part of his thoughts and enrich the universal church. That’s why this is not about me, this is about all of us. Together, we will journey in faith.”

Finally, Archbishop Tagle said he will be returning to The Vatican for his formal installation on November 24, 2012.

Before the dismissal, Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo of Manila invited Church members to spread the faith through pamphlets prepared by the archdiocese to guide people through basics of the faith and church services.

After the Mass, people watched and danced or hung out around the book sale tents, with their packed picnic lunch of rice, meat and veggies.

Thank God, faith is so alive in our country.

one’s self, family, friends, and God. They were taught how to fight rejections around them through appreciation of simple and positive thoughts and things that God gave them. Even the parents of the participants were affected by the realizations of their children after this wonderful experience. One mother commented: “Ang YE ay parang mantsa, kapag nalagyan ka na nito, kailanma’y di na matatanggal pa.” The Youth Encounter ended with a mass celebrated by Msgr. Dennis at 6:30 pm. He thanked the speakers, facilitators and the PYM who were behind the success of this activity.

Family is one of the basic foundations of society and they play a substantial role in molding the youth’s intellectual ability, moral principles, values and definitely spiritual belief. We are very blessed that our parish helps the youths to realize the real essence of having a family, to have a strong love for each other and a relationship with God.
