BELFAST'S CROMAC SPRINGS

Martin Gray, Member B 0552

Recently while checking some MARTINS in Bassetts Guide and Directory of 1886 for County Antrim, I came on a mention of Cromac Springs. There was an

advertisement as under

MILLIN & RANKINS Sparkling Beverages are Manufactured from the Celebrated Cromac Water now so

Famous and necessary for the production of Pure Aerated Waters, One of the Original Springs being their own private property.

Millin & Rankin

Ginger Ale Manufacturers CROMAC FOUNTAINS, BELFAST

I had never heard of Cromac Springs but the name Millin rang a distant bell associated with my great grandfather James Martin born 1806. Looking again in the Belfast

Directory of 1841/42 I found:

"Martin, James, manufacturer of soda water and ginger beer brewer No. 8 Great

Edward Street". - No sign of a Millin. On checking the 1850 Directory James Martin was still at No. 8 but at No. 12 was a Joseph Millin and at No. 14a Wm. Cochrane. Great Edward Street was located on the short length of the present Victoria Street between May Street and the beginning of Cromac Street.

Is it simply a coincidence that all three names are associated with mineral waters?

The following is a basic Tree of my line of Martins. Does anyone know of siblings of either of the first two James MARTIN? Or indeed of their wives? Is there any information on Cromac Springs?
