Introduction:

Research Question What is the difference of the glycemic index, the pH values, and the recovery effectiveness of the gel, sports drink, and recovery drink, respectively, of Hammer Nutrition and Gatorade G Series products?

Hypothesis If the Hammer Nutrition products are compared to their corresponding products in the Gatorade G Series, than the Hammer Nutrition products will have lower glycemic values, more alkaline pH values, and more effectiveness of recovery.

BackgroundRegarding Glycemic Testing

Glycemic Index- A number representing the ability

of a food, relative to that of glucose,

to increase the level of glucose in

the blood.

Blood glucose level- Milligrams glucose per deciliter of blood

- Healthy levels: 70-100 mg/dL when fasting

under 125 when tested randomly

- Abnormally high levels increase risk of diabetes

Page 7: Bekah Weaver, Phoebe Guercio, and Shane Marcial Mr. Spangler Whitefish High School Advanced Chemistry.

Why we chose glucose testing:Complex carbs vs. simple sugars…do they make a difference?

Hammer’s philosophy- long-chain carbohydrates = smooth, long lasting energy

- no sugar high or sugar crash

Gatorade’s philosophy- the body can utilize simple carbohydrates more quickly

- complex carbs cause gastric distress because they take longer to be processed by the body

Page 8: Bekah Weaver, Phoebe Guercio, and Shane Marcial Mr. Spangler Whitefish High School Advanced Chemistry.

BackgroundRegarding pH testing

pH value

- A figure expressing the acidity or alkalinity of a solution on a logarithmic scale

- 7 is neutral

- lower values are more acidic

- higher values are more alkaline

Page 9: Bekah Weaver, Phoebe Guercio, and Shane Marcial Mr. Spangler Whitefish High School Advanced Chemistry.

Why we chose pH testing

How different are the pH values of Gatorade and HEED?

Which end of the pH scale is better during exercise?

Hammer’s philosophy

- body becomes acidic during exercise due to lactic acid and release of hydrogen ions

- to maintain equilibrium (pH of 7.4) supplement with alkaline fluids

Gatorade’s philosophy

- products can only be effective if they get out of the bottle

- acidity improves taste and marketability of product

Page 10: Bekah Weaver, Phoebe Guercio, and Shane Marcial Mr. Spangler Whitefish High School Advanced Chemistry.

BackgroundRegarding recovery testing

- Essentially a blend of carbs and proteins taken immediately after workout

- How you perform tomorrow depends on how you recover today

- Helps body to rebuild to be more fit than before

HOW YOU RECOVER TODAY DETERMINES HOW

YOU PERFORM TOMORROW.

Page 11: Bekah Weaver, Phoebe Guercio, and Shane Marcial Mr. Spangler Whitefish High School Advanced Chemistry.

Why we chose recovery testingWhich recovery drink is more effective?

- Which product rebuild muscles faster?

- What physical effects do the recovery drinks have?

- Change in:- soreness- performance- level of fatigue- Difficulty breathing- Cramps

Procedure

Regarding Glycemic Testing-Took blood glucose using a glucometer when there was no food in our systems- Ate one serving of either Hammer Gel or G Series Prime- Tested 3 more times each one half hour apart- Graphed results

- Details- We didn’t eat anything else during testing so the gels were the only thing affecting our blood sugar- One boy and girl tested for each type of gel- One person from each brand exercised while testing and the other person in the group rested while testing- We switched roles on the second test date- Test 1 took place at Kalispell Regional Hospital using their equipment- Test 2 took place at The Wave using a glucometer donated to us by Glacier Medical

Page 13: Bekah Weaver, Phoebe Guercio, and Shane Marcial Mr. Spangler Whitefish High School Advanced Chemistry.

Procedure

Regarding pH Testing

- Pour 3 flavors G Series Perform into beakers- Mix HEED flavors into distilled water in other beakers - Calibrate pH meter- Use meter to read pH levels of all solutions, rinsing off the meter in distilled water between each reading

Page 14: Bekah Weaver, Phoebe Guercio, and Shane Marcial Mr. Spangler Whitefish High School Advanced Chemistry.

Procedure

Regarding Recovery Testing

- Wake up and have breakfast

-Two hours later, complete workout routine-15 minute warm up- 10 mile stationary bike ride as hard/fast as you can

-Take one serving of recovery product immediately following and 90 minutes after workout

-4 hours after workout, eat the same thing you had for breakfast

-Wait another 2 hours and do the workout again

- Collect data from stationary bikes and surveys

-Repeat another day using the alternate recovery product

-Compare the recovery effectiveness

Conclusions

Glycemic Testing:

No conclusions were able to be made due to the number of variables and test subjects.

Page 22: Bekah Weaver, Phoebe Guercio, and Shane Marcial Mr. Spangler Whitefish High School Advanced Chemistry.

ConclusionspH Testing

The Gatorade G Series products were very acidic, while the HEED products were neutral to slightly basic.

Thank You’s

To Dr. Bill Misner – former researcher at Hammer Nutrition that helped me gather information and edit procedures. Huge help!

To Donetta Antonovich – employee at Kalispell Regional Hospital where we conducted our first glycemic tests. She came in on her day off to help us test.

Glacier Medical –donated a glucometer to the school. We used this for our second test.
