Boutique ChicA luxury bathroom is the trademark of a quality hotel. Judith Gibbons, Bristan’s trend expert, provides some hints and tips on creating the look in your bathroom so you can enjoy that fi ve-star experience without having to leave the house. All you need now is room service….

The Traditional Victorian Townhouse HotelCreate the look of a smart,Victorian-style

bathroom with a carefully chosen traditional suite, like Bristan’s

Twist range (1), and for real authenticity, an old-fashioned pull

chain toilet cistern. Choose rich colours like purple and red for the

walls and a black and white tiled fl oor. Add in a glorious, period-

style shower and complete the look with some traditional

design taps.

The Country House HotelThese chocolate box-style hotels are perfect for relaxing in after a

long day’s walking in the country and the bathrooms will be

traditionally styled with a focus on comfort. A roll top bath would

be perfect in this room, matched with a power shower to wash

away the day and fuss-free, yet traditionally styled taps like

Bristan’s Trinity range (2). Complete the look with luxurious

draped curtains and accessorise with pretty fl owers of your choice.

The Spa ResortTurn your bathroom into a haven of tranquillity

with soft and neutral calming colours and natural

fl ooring like limestone. Add in a whirlpool bath (see

www.heritagebathrooms.com) and a rainfall shower

and accessorise with candles, natural storage contain-

ers and luxury toiletries. And keep those fl uffy towels

warm with Bristan’s Apollo towel rail (3).

The Urban HotelThe key to this look is minimalism, so make sure you

have all of your clutter stored away in suitably

chic bathroom furniture (see www.heritagebathrooms.

com for inspiration). The bathroom suite should be

simple in its styling, but you can add the designer

touch with a stunning shower like Bristan’s Prism

Thermostatic Inline Shower Pole in Black (4) which

comes with in-built controls and a separate

handset (in chrome).

There’s a lot to think about when you’re designing a new bathroom, especially if you have a young family, live with older relatives or if you have to cater for people with limited mobility. Karen Booth, planning and design expert and brand manager for Bristan’s iD range of ‘easy to use’ products, offers some tips on creating a bathroom that everyone can use – without having to sacrifi ce style.

All Inclusive

The suiteOpt for a wall hung loo and basin. Not only

are they easier to clean around, they can be

positioned at a height to suit you and the

members of your family, so you can brush your

teeth and wash your hands comfortably. Wall

hung products are also ideal for wheelchair

users as they can be positioned low enough

so that they can be easily reached. Loos with

push button fl ushes are also easier to use than

pull chains or levers.

ShowersChoose a thermostatic shower that will

regulate temperature and protect your family

from scalding. Ensure that any controls are

easy to grip (especially when they’re wet) and

select models with adjustable rails so that the

height of the shower head itself can be

adjusted for all members.

If you, or a member of your family, use a

wheelchair, you might want to think about

putting in a wet room (a room with a shower

but no cubicle) that’s much easier to access

than a traditional shower over a bath.

TapsTaps with cross heads are a popular feature of

most bathrooms, but they’re often quite fi ddly

for small children or people with restricted

mobility in their hands, so opt for taps with

long levers or push controls that are much

easier to use.

Added extrasMake sure that accessories, like the loo roll

holder, are hung in a position that everyone

Keen to be green? Bristan’s water saving expert, Clare Ward explains why water saving has never been so easy:

.

Save water in Style

While many of us link water shortage to famine

in developing countries, the reality is that the

threat affects everyone; including us in the UK.

Despite all our wet weather, hosepipe bans are

the norm in summer months. In fact in the

summer of 2006, offi cial reports suggested that

incredibly, the south east of England had less

water per person than Sudan or Syria.

Saving water at home takes very little effort,

but makes a surprisingly big difference – and

with plenty of gorgeous water saving products

now available from Bristan’s ecosmart range,

it’s never been easier to add a touch of eco

chic to your home.

One of the easiest ways to start saving water is

by fi tting fl ow limiters to your taps and

showers. These nifty little devices will cost

around £5 and can be easily fi tted between

the water outlet and the hose on a shower,

and in either the tail or the spout of the tap

to help you immediately save water. Or you

could change your taps to ones that have a

clever eco-click cartridge in them that can

help save up to 72% of your water usage.

If you want to make a big saving, then think

about swapping your loo for a dual fl ush

model – like Bristan’s Dune. With a fl ush as

low as 2.6 litres per minute (compared to the

standard 9 litres per minute) the Dune loo

can help you make signifi cant water savings.

A low capacity Dune bath is also available,

which can save you a third of your water

usage, and you can complete the look with a

matching Dune basin.

products, visit www.bristan.com/ecosmart

changes and choosing

Waterwise is an independent

organisation that campaigns for water

effi ciency in the UK. Here, Chris Philpot

from the organisation explains how we

can all use less water around the home.

Each person in the UK uses about 150

litres of water every day. At home, most

of this water is used in the kitchen and

bathroom. This includes water used for

personal washing – showering and

bathing, toilet fl ushing, washing-up,

clothes washing and drinking. This level

of use, which is rising by 1% every year,

is not sustainable in the long-term. If we

do not take action now, climate change,

population shifts and consumer behav-

iour will mean the UK will face even

greater water stress in the future.

By making a few small behavioural

changes and choosing more water

effi cient products it is possible to reduce

your water consumption by around 30%.

Here are some tips:

Remember to turn off the tap while • brushing your teeth

Ensure your toilet is water effi cient •

Take shorter showers •

Fix dripping taps •

Use a full load in your dishwasher •

Use a full load in your • washing machine

Fill a jug with tap water and leave it • to cool in your fridge

Wash your fruit and vegetables • in a bowl

My bathroom is quite small. Any

tips on creating space?

One of the main problems you’ll probably

fi nd in a small bathroom is that you have

nowhere to put things, so invest in some

good bathroom furniture with plenty of

storage (see www.heritagebathrooms.

com for inspiration). A wall hung basin

and loo will also give you more fl oor

space and consider swapping your chunky

radiator to a heated towel rail – not

only will it keep your towels and your

bathroom warm, it will help create the

illusion of more space. JG

We’re a family of six and have a problem in that the shower in our main bathroom goes hot or cold whenever people use taps or fl ush the loo elsewhere in the house. How can we stop it from happening?

The only way to ensure that the

temperature remains constant when

you’re in the shower is to fi t a

thermostatic model. These work by

balancing the blend of the hot and cold

water that comes into the shower from

your water supply, so that it remains at a

constant temperature. If the temperature

drops, the thermostat will open the water

valve so that more hot water can get in.

If it gets to hot, it will let more cold water

in, so it shouldn’t be affected by taps and

loos being used elswhere in the house.PM

We have a period suite in our bathroom. Could you suggest a shower that will complement it without being too traditional?

Bristan’s 1901 shower is now available

with controls that combine a traditional

design dial - based on Bristan’s popular

1901 tap – with a contemporary chrome

backplate; traditional styling, with a

contemporary twist. (also available

in gold fi nish) BJ

We’ve just renovated our bathroom and are looking for some contemporary design taps that look good without costing the earth. Any suggestions?

Try Bristan’s Capri range. A pair of basin

taps will cost around £53 and they come

with a fi ve year guarantee. WR

Should we check our water pressure before choosing new taps?

Yes. Most houses in the UK have a

gravity-fed system with hot water

pressures as low as 0.1 Bar (see out guide

on p22 to fi nd out more about water

pressure). Obviously, if you select a tap

designed for water pressures above that,

then you’re going to be disappointed with

its performance. PM

I’ve fi tted a new basin mixer in my bathroom, but water trickles from it after I turn it off. Is there a fault with it?

This is quite normal and is caused by

what’s known as ‘capillary action’ where

any water left in the spout after use

is drained out. It should only last for a

second or two, and is a nuisance rather

than a fault. PM

I’m looking for a period-style bathroom to match my Victorian property. I don’t have a huge budget though.

Any suggestions?

Try Bristan’s Twist range which includes a

period-style basin, loo and bath with

matching taps and accessories. You’ll pay

around £725 for the suite, so it shouldn’t

break the bank. JG

We live in a hard water area. Is there anything I can do to stop the build up of limescale on my showerhead?

Try replacing the shower head for one with

rub clean nozzles. Simply rubbing your fi ngers

over the nozzles will eliminate limescale and

hard water deposits, making sure you have a

perfect shower every time. BJ

I suffer from arthritis in my hands and am fi nding it hard to turn on the taps in my bathroom. Can you recommend something that’s modern in design, but would be easier to use?

Try the G-Type basin mixer from

Bristan’s iD collection. Oozing with

designer style, G-Type comes with a

sleek slide operation that’s really easy

to use. A choice of matching bath fi ller,

bath shower mixers and a shower is

also available in the range. WR

I’d like to save water by fi tting a fl ow limiter to my shower. Where do I fi t it?

Shower fl ow limiters are

usually easily fi tted at the

connection between the

water outlet and the

shower hose. PM

Identify your water system

how to?

Gravity-fed (Vented system)

This type of system will be found in most homes in the UK.

If you have a gravity system, you’ll have a cold water tank

in the loft and a hot water cylinder directly below it (usually

in the airing cupboard). The water in the cylinder is heated

by a boiler and fed to taps and showers, with the boiler also

feeding radiators around the house. As the water in the

cylinder is used up, it is replaced with cold from the tank

above, which in turn is ‘topped up’ from the mains water

supply via the ball valve. To work properly, the pressure

from both water sources will need to be balanced. Your

plumber will be able to tell you if your system is balanced

and if it isn’t, will be able to fi t either a pump or a pressure

reducing valve (if mains cold water fed).

Suitable shower types: (Low pressure variants)Thermostatic Mixer• Manual Mixer• Power Shower•

Unvented system

An unvented system has a hot water storage cylinder

that takes cold water directly from the mains. The water

is heated by an in-built coil which is either operated

electrically, or with hot water from the central heating boiler.

As the coil gets hot, it heats the cold water within the

cylinder ready for use. As everything is under the pressure

of mains water, the fl ow rates are much better and you

won’t need a pump to get a powerful shower. The whole

heating system is completely sealed (i.e. “unvented”) and

they can be installed virtually anywhere, so you might fi nd

yours in a storage cupboard. A lot of new homes will have

one of these systems.

Suitable shower types:Thermostatic Mixer• Manual Mixer• High Pressure Units•

Peter Manning, Bristan’s

technical expert

Most homes in the UK will have a ‘traditional’ hot water system, made up of three elements; a boiler to heat the water, a hot water cylinder to store the heated water and a cold water storage tank for taps and showers, and radiators to heat the property using water from the boiler. This will be the case for many of us, but advances in technology also mean that there are now systems that do not need to store hot or cold water to deliver it on demand, which is great news for small properties which are short on storage space.

The type of water system you have in your home will affect what kind of shower you can install into the bathroom. Use our guide below to identify your water system and fi nd the best shower for you:

Combination (Combi) Boiler

A combi boiler can be located anywhere

within the home and heats water ‘on

demand’ using a heat exchanger when

a hot tap is turned on. A combi boiler is

fed directly from the mains, so it doesn’t

need a hot water cylinder or a cold water

tank. It also heats water for central

heating. Combi boilers are usually fi tted

in relatively small houses or fl ats, where

there isn’t a great demand for hot water.

Suitable shower typesElectric Shower• Manual Shower• Thermostatic Shower•

Recessed Shower ValveShower control hidden within a fi nished wall with only the operating handles and a cover plate visible.

Mixer ShowerShower that mixes hot and cold water supplies together to achieve the required temperature.

Semi PedestalCeramic attachment fi xed directly to a wall to accommodate a basin – does not go all the way to the fl oor like a full pedestal.

Semi Recessed BasinA ceramic basin that hangs over the edge of the vanity unit or wash stand that it sits on.

Sequential ShowerSingle control thermostatic mixer shower – controls on/off and temperature in one dial but has no control over fl ow.

Shower DiverterShower control that will ‘divert’ the water fl ow to additional handsets, body jets or (like you see in many hotels) to a bath fl ler.

Shower ValveThe part of the shower that controls water fl ow and temperature.

Thermostatic Mixer ShowerShowers that use a temperature-sensitive cartridge to maintain a safe temperature. Will shut off if there’s a supply failure of either cold or hot water.

Bathroom Jargon Buster

So, you’ve decided it’s time to update your bathroom and you’ve seen what kind of style you like, but how do you know whether you need a close coupled or a back to wall loo? What’s the difference between a mixer and a power shower and what on earth is a rigid riser? Find out all you need to know with our handy jargon buster.

Back to Wall Back to wall describes a bathroom fi xture that is fi tted rigidly to the surface of a supportive wall.

CisternThe ceramic or plastic vessel that stores the water necessary for fl ushing a toilet.

Close-Coupled Close-Coupled is used to describe a style of toilet where the cistern attaches directly to the pan.

Concealed CisternA cistern that is hidden from view behind a false wall.

Dual-Flush A Dual-Flush loo has two fl ushing volumes – low and high.

Electric showerUses cold supply only and heats the water through an element within the shower itself so no need for a hot water supply.

Fixed HeadShower head that is fi xed to the wall with concealed pipework.

Rigid RiserShower head fi xed to wall with exposed pipework from the shower head to the control valve.

Wall HungBathroom fi xtures that can be hung directly onto a wall and off the fl oor.

Power ShowerA shower that uses an integral pump to boost the fl ow of water to the showerhead.
