The past few months we have been going through Jesus’ teaching in the Gospel of Luke, focusing on welcoming Jesus fully into our lives. All these aspects that we are called to live into are summarized by the term discipleship. As we approach the busy holiday season, I want to remind and ground you in one of the core aspects of this call- ing. Being a disciple of Jesus means being someone who follows Jesus; “whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:27). He defines the sort of lives that disciples must live. And following Jesus means being where he goes. Rowan Williams, in his book Being Disciples: Essentials of the Christians Life, writes that “if you are going to be where the Master is, those things that you think come naturally and comfortably are not necessarily going to define where you find yourself. The place you are going to be is always going to be defined by the Master, not by you or indeed, ultimately, by any of your qualities or relationships, because ‘a disciple is not greater than his master.’” Williams continues: “Being with the Master is recognizing that who you are is finally going to be determined by your relationship with him.” Consequentially, “being where Jesus is means being in the company of the people whose company Jesus seeks and keeps. Jesus chooses the company of the excluded, the disreputable, the wretched, the self-hating, the poor, the diseased; so that is where you are going to find yourself.” I love how Williams summarizes this: “our discipleship is not about choosing our com- pany, but choosing the company of Jesusor rather, getting used to the fact of having been chosen for the company of Jesus.” Grace & Peace,

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I pray that this newsletter finds you well! The past few months we have been going through Jesus’ teaching in the Gospel of Luke, focusing on welcoming Jesus fully into our lives. All these aspects that we are called to live into are summarized by the term discipleship. As we approach the busy holiday season, I want to remind and ground you in one of the core aspects of this call-ing.

Jesus chooses the company of the excluded, the disreputable, the wretched, the self-hating, the poor, the diseased; so that is where you are going to find yourself.” I love how Williams summarizes this: “our discipleship is not about choosing our com-pany, but choosing the company of Jesus—or rather, getting used to the fact of having been chosen for the company of Jesus.”

Grace & Peace,
