  • ‘you can also get respite care’

    Signs of Dementia

Mum used to be very active. She cooked and cleaned, and took great care of Dad and our kids.

The GP explained that the symptoms we had noticed could be dementia.

The GP referred us to a neurologist. He ordered an MRI scan and did some tests. It turned out mum had dementia.

After the diagnosis, I called Dementia Australia to get advice.

It is good you came. Early diagnosis is important. There are things we might be able to do to slow it down.

The dementia changed mum: she talked less, became forgetful and would often lose things.

At first we treated it as normal, but after a while, we decided to see the GP.

I was told to contact My Aged Care to get support, and after the assessment, got some help at home.

The My Aged Care team also suggested we call the Chinese social services and join a carers group.

We did: Mum joined a day program and I joined a carers group.
